    I really like the lime wash trend, tbh. It’s natural paint that helps with breathability in half timbered houses and helps avoid mold. When done correctly it can look really great and timeless so I guess the primary issue with this trend is just how the paint is being used and not so much the paint itself.

      in a modern house, latex paint can actually act as a vapor barrier, which is an integral part of your wall construction.... if your house was built in the 20th century with modern building materials, chances are you don't want it to "breathe" -- that's what mechanical ventilation is for, homes that are too leaky actually cause mold issues in cold climates. So, limewash paint is really only a good thing to use if you have an old house without modern insulation, otherwise it's just aesthetic.

    i think everyone went heavily into gray and whites because we lived for a decade in the strange Tuscan-inspired era where everyone's homes were warm yellows, beiges, browns, oranges and rusts. my parent's home was SO 'Tuscan' and they got so sick of it they sold the house, bought a fixer-upper and completely gutted it to be completely white and gray to cope. now im trying to get them to add color but they refuse haha.

    If you've gone all grey my suggestion is.... add in some *gasp* brown furniture. Brown and grey actually mix really nicely together and create a rich, warm way of doing mixed neutrals - think about how the classic look with a grey suit is always to do a brown pair of shoes and belt. In general, tbh, that's something I've suggested to a lot of people - if you're looking for a place to start for your home design aesthetic, pick a few of your favorite outfits. From there, look at one of them that is the one that makes you feel the most like *you* and think of it as if swatches of all the elements from it were pieces on your mood board - for example blue denim, a white tshirt, tan leather jacket, gold earrings. There, use that as your color/texture palette.

    This whole concept is sort of insane to me. Like...the concept of home decor 'trends'. Get a style of your own, do research, do inner research and find out what you actually like without influence by what is 'trendy' period. If you hate hideous orange tone wood panels, floors or furniture, paint it. If you like wood, don't paint it. It really is that simple. Im just shocked at how easily influenced people are...

    • @AthalieM
      @AthalieM 2 года назад +4

      I agree with this BUT I do understand how people who don't have a strong sense of personal style (and that's most people) are so easily influenced in our age of constant bombardment of similar, trend-driven imagery. And it's not just that, it's also what may be available to you to purchase, too. Not everyone has access to good thrift stores, or the money to pay to buy and ship stuff from online retailers or secondhand shops to their home. In the US, they might just have Target, Homegoods, WalMart, etc. And the biggest factor, really, is TIME, time to find quality, unique things and time to seek out diverse inspirations in order to cultivate a true sense of your own taste. I am really invested in my home, so I spend not just my money but my time on it, and time is what really makes the difference imo. A lot of people don't have that time, or prioritize it differently.

    PLEASE talk about letting things live in their own style until they become classic. So many people are throwing out perfectly good kitchens because they're 'out of style' instead of appreciating them for the period they were made in and just swapping out the small things.
    This throw-away-consumerism is so friggin polluting and unsustainable and we need to stop it.
    I live in a mid-century apartment with some original panelling, 80's closet doors in the bedroom and a 90's kitchen that is 95% perfect (I just need some space for the microwave oven). I had been contemplating renovating it because it was not in the 60's style that the apartment should be in but then thought of the waste - all to make a faux 60's kitchen that was almost identical to the one that I already have. I don't want to be a part of this mentality to throw out good things just because I have the money to keep up with the trends.
    Now I've changed out the cabinet hardware, added lighting and made the place a little more functional and decided that I'm keeping the 'period pieces' and allowing them to speak for the time when they were made. Some day the 90's kitchen will be called classic, even the 80's closet doors with the routed pattern will some day be considered classic. The main point is that they look perfectly fine and functional and there is no need to change them out just to soothe my vanity and changing fashions.
    Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

    That whole Fixer Upper Johanna thing did everything in. Hobby Lobby is now all over it and every listed piece of real estate looks like it. People need to turn off their TVs and think for themselves. I love going into someone’s home that is THEM. It may not be what makes sense to me, but it’s THEM, not HGTV. That is HOME.

    I have a dark gray leather couch in my living room. The walls are very very light gray (almost white). Other areas of my house have lots of color - the dining room is purple. One guest room is light yellow and the other one is dark blue with white headboard. I love it. My fav style is British colonial.

    I remodeled my first home this year and I wanted (more than anything) Dakota Johnson’s green-ass kitchen…but unfortunately because of costs we were given the option of white or grey shaker cabinets. Went with white and aged brass fixtures..and picked a unique backsplash that’s kind of a handmade ceramic long hexagon in his cool grey beige color. It still feels more basic than I would have liked. I just felt backed into a corner with so many design choices because a lot of more unique stuff is crazy expensive! We plan on DIYing as we live here though…and NO painted arches!!! 😂🤣

    I've always loved wood paneling. I know there was a time it was considered cheesy and outdated but I've always thought it was a treasure. The problem people would usually encounter it in homes in a musty basement with really bad decor that didn't compliment this feature. I would love to have this detail in a home. I think it's timeless.

  • @modernanimist2421
    @modernanimist2421 2 года назад +29

    Paige, I agree with you on all of these things, but there’s also a dilemma in the trend cycle. Sometimes the original thing getting copied is great but then the cheap knockoffs and ubiquity of a style end up making it look stupid very quickly. For example, I liked the Hay mags sofa in the white boucle before white boucle started appearing everywhere. I love the dramatic marble look now, but I have a feeling I might hate it in a year if I start seeing it everywhere. The more I follow interior design, the more I want to find items that are either very plain or vintage and obscure, and then hide my style from everyone so no one can copy me and destroy the things I love.

    Most people that do all neutral kid toys are doing Montessori, which suggests natural textures and neutral colors in kids rooms. There are ways to incorporate color in that though for sure

    • @MorganBak
      @MorganBak 2 года назад +6

      As a prior Montessori teacher’s aid, it kills me when I see the extreme prairie-beige nurseries/playrooms. Avoiding overstimulation is important for any child, but you also need to foster their creativity and individual expression, both of which will be stifled if you force them into an all beige universe. Also, I’d say about 90% of the toys in our primary classroom were colorful. :)

    It’s fun to see trends in other places! In Scandinavia the rustic lime wash/chalk paint look was out before the pandemic hit (sorry to the scandis with recently painted lime/rough chalk walls who wanna argue with me, but it really was). I don’t dislike the look per say, I think it has its charm, but it’s very 2015-16, it’s overdone and quite dated here

    Here's my 2 cents (or more!):
    1. Everything white reminds me of hospitals. Ew. Being a person who visited hospitals a lot during her childhood, pure white/neutral colors and even green curtains in an all white bathroom scares me out.
    2. Antique gold/ brass it's my must seek out for my bathroom and kitchen fittings! So pretty!
    3. Aren't kids rooms supposed to be colorful and look lively, and great for experimenting with colors in a nice way (kinda eclectic)? I think neutral/white colors in kids rooms is awful, unless it's just the wall or some details. It makes the color balanced and avoid that the colors don't look like puke lmao.
    3. I'm still thinking that the chain and the beaded thingy stuff is stupid, and only someone with barely any shame decided to troll people and convince them that those looks were acceptable, at least. Meh.
    4. I understand the book thing, but even thrift stores have way, WAY prettier and interesting books that aren't as repetitive as, or is the same stuff they have puked with the Tom Ford book. Sorry Tom Ford! But having the same crap copy pasted is so awful.
    5. Boucle is so anti my pets, so it's a no no for me.
    6.Lime wash? Is that a thing? It looks awful, and way worse if it's in the tropics and humid areas.
    6. Some wood could be painted, but some just need varnish or just tint. It depends the area you live.
