This is the content I think is really lacking in the design world. It's awesome to see celebrity homes and take inspiration from incredibly designed spaces, but more and more people live in new, modern, grey apartments like the one at 10:04 and it's sometimes difficult to imagine recreating some design ideas in such a characterless aesthetic. Hope to see more content like this on top of the other great stuff you're putting out.

For my dull box, I get a lot of inspiration from Korean interior design which I would describe as cozy/effortless maximalism but still pretty oriented to white walls and modern finishes. I appreciate that this design style pays attention to the details and respects the scale of the small modern condo. So much furniture in the west is extra large. I have a hard time finding the smaller sized pieces that will really fit into my place.

Hi Paige. I can't tell you how glad i am i found your youtube channel. I was always very into interior design but since i follow your advice, i FINALLY (after 4 years of trying) like how my place looks. This year i made the mistake to invest in 6 posters from desenio because i thought: well it's fine if i just don't buy boring ones everyone has in their home. I payed 100€ which is very much for me because i am a poor student. But i began hating them just 2 months into having them. Same with almost everything i bought, i was redecorating every 2-3 months because i never actually liked something and didn't know why because i've put sooo much time and effort in choosing the right stuff. The problem was i bought cheap looking stuff, i even thrifted sooo much just cheap mass produced stuff. I just bought whatever i thought fit the right aesthetic but not what i actually like and means something to me. Watching your videos really trained my eye. I am finally free from my old bad habits and stopped buying stuff i actually didn't want! I got rid of my posters and painted myself and nothing looks cheap or instagrammy anymore. You wouldn't believe how thankful i am

Yes so true, as a person who hates grey, cool tones I really related to this! I love textures and warm tones but I rent a place that has cool tones (every place was grey) and I found that multi tonal warm wood tones in furniture, interesting vintage pieces, layered natural fiber rugs, rich bold and creamy colors and lots of art, and warm light really help make the rooms feel cozy!

fun side story about one of my pieces! the coffee shop my husband and i met and later got engaged in had this vintage game board table, warm wood and green chairs, (switched out games at the top board), and we would play checkers for hours. he proposed to me while playing checkers on our anniversary. he said he was “missing a piece”, whipped out the ring from the one drawer on the table that kept the game pieces. the coffee shop tragically closed due to COVID, but the owners gave us the chairs and board table. it sits below our gallery wall in its own space. it doesn’t get used often, as you mentioned, but wow does it bring character and life to our gray box :)

Imagine that!

  • @IceeaTeea

I found it especially interesting that you recommend adding warmth to a stark space by going in the opposite direction - I live in a one-room student apartment that's all-white (cannot be painted) except one raw concrete wall and warm wooden windowsills. I do really enjoy the look, and the white walls, floor and ceiling kind of reminds me of an island home and lends itself well to pops of color. I've also been trying to find a balance between creating warmth and coziness and leaning into the style of my space since I do personally really enjoy the more industrial, slightly 'sharp' look of the apartment and partly do want to enhance or express that. traditional/classic styles aren't really for me and I feel like they would clash too much with the style of my apartment but I definitely agree that elements like wood and some fabric are good ways to warm and soften up the space. for me it's definitely a process and sometimes a fine line between introducing elements that make me feel good, relaxed and at ease while slowly developing and being able to express my own style and identity. so for me, introducing more woods and some fabrics while not making everything wood and fabric and still keeping some metals and more streamlined elements! I also love decorating with natural elements such as colored ceramics, stoneware, glassware, marble, etc.

Today I was looking at an architecture book and thought of something I'd like to say. The examples of concrete in this video are indeed cold, but concrete can actually be a very warm material. There are many examples from other countries where concrete looks so good! But it has to be combined with warm woods and plants.

I’m about to move into a dull grey box apartment and I’ve watched this video so many times to reassure myself it doesn’t have to be atrocious

Loved this video. We're moving soon and will be buying a new home. I dread that we may have to buy a home that has gray walls. I will try and paint the walls eventually, but in the meantime, I love these tips for decorating a gray home. I love the idea of burl wood pieces too. Thanks Paige! Congratulations for hitting 100k subs!

I like the idea of taking so far off the wall I really like it when people put a table behind sofa and you walk up behind it. Maybe you could do a video where you talk about creating those small vignettes in home like you said a chair in a corner with a small table stuff like that with all bunch of ideas

Love your suggestions. Modern was an actual period from early 20th century to late 60s early 70s. Contemporary is what you’re referring to.

My favourite way to warmthen a stark space is with a big foofy shag throw rug. No matter how cold and stark a space is, I feel cozy if my feet are touching something soft and fluffy.

Paige, I am just moving to a new build house with polished concrete floors and planned instaling bamboo shades and adding massive wood furniture before watching this video! It just needs a bit of balancing, not completely "demodernising". I am into the Eichler, Eames, Aalto type of houses and they just need to stay contemporary. I have a difficulty mixing greys with creams, just using white oak, acacia, black, olive, seafoam green and burned orange with my greys.

PRO bamboo shades! We removed our standard blinds for bamboo ones in our rental and it is SUPERIOR. The one thing I'll mention is the cheapest ones don't really block people from seeing in, so if you want privacy you should buck up and get the ones with the wider "slats"

People don't realize that those shades need a privacy liner that attaches to the back and it doesn't come with the shade, it is sold separately.
