- The PROBLEM with Mega Man Legacy Collection!! Mega Man Legacy Collection 1+2 retrospective review!!
In this video we take a look at the Mega Man Legacy collection and how it handled compiling all of our favorite classic Mega Man game into one... I mean two games!
Another thing I forgot to mention about the games is the fact that Mega Man Legacy collection 1 only goes to 1080p on PC while Legacy collection 2 goes up to 4k. I know that doesn't really matter but I didn't have a fitting spot to say that in the video and I still wanted to let the people know so... I hope this will suffice.

I've never played Mega Man & Bass, and the fact that it's not available on either collection is a huge missed opportunity.
That’s not a missed opportunity, that’s a dodged bullet
it’s hardly even a game in the series
The ONE side-scrolling mega man game I hardly got to play...and haven't beaten yet. I hear the GBA port we got was far inferior to the original. If Capcom re-releases it in some way, it should be the original version....not the downscaled GBA version.
It's not. They realized that Mega Man & Bass is just an experiment and not even a full game. They reused two robot masters from Mega Man 8 as well and others are mere replacements like Pirate Man replaced Aqua Man (while using Aqua Man stage assets) or Magic Man who is just another type of circus robot like Clown Man. And that aside, the way the game way conducted was poorly done and that kind of cheap difficulty many gamers accuse other Megaman games for.
Overall Mega Man & Bass is just a curiosity.
I don't know why that game gets so much hate, I thought it was pretty good.
What I really liked about the Anniversary Collection is the shoulder buttons to change weapons. That's something that should have been implemented in the Legacy Collection.
True!! I think that's a feature with the complete works games tho so it's not just exclusive to anniversary collection B)
@@tooterp wish someone translated the ps1 games
...Plus arranged cps II soundtrack...
@@doom5895 what games?
that was a great feature.
Megaman Powered Up would be a nice unlockable also for the first collection
I've had both Legacy Collections for a long time and never even thought about checking out the Challenges, but I definitely will ASAP. I usually watch your videos for Mega Man-related entertainment but I actually learned something valuable from this one! Thank you, TooterP!
I also believe Rockman and Forte belongs in Collection 2.
Honestly agree with most of what you said here. I think adding 6 "secret" games to a game that's already such a bargain would be a bit much, and some of the points were a little nitpicky for my tastes but I suppose that's the point of these types of reviews. I truly love the Legacy Collections, they let me finally play the series accessibly in July of last year, and I've been addicted ever since, so suffice to say all of the Legacy Collections did their job really well.
Also I got the Battle Network Collection, and Mega Man talks to you in the menu. For anyone who was wondering.
Sonic Mega Collection for the GameCube and its upgraded version for the PS2 say hello.
One thing I noticed you didnt mention is that the legacy collection 2 requires an active internet connection. I dont understand why this is needed since the first one didnt need that. Not really a big deal but it just saddens me knowing one day the servers will go down.
I didn’t even know that? That is absolutely unneeded!
I didn't know that lol, that's awful
What version/system are you playing on?
I''ve played MMLC2 on the PS4 and have not needed an active internet connection.
I hsve never needed an internet connection to play legacy collection 2 on pc
On pc yeah, due to steam
Also 13:23 you could always fight the bosses in legacy collection 1 from the database.
So, I’m not an expert, but if I remember correctly, the reason the PS1 version of MM8 was chosen is because the Sega Saturn is notoriously difficult to emulate due to its 8 different processors, and was even harder to emulate in 2018. It’s probable that Capcom figured it wasn’t worth the time and money to develop a Saturn Emulator for the relatively small benefit of having the Saturn version of 8
For what it is, it gets the job done, but I do wish we could have gotten the Complete Works versions *AS* unlockables.
And to be honest, having the Sega Saturn of MM8 version would have cool. I think if I would point out a flaw, it would be the amiibo exclusive challenges that you can only get on the 3DS and Switch versions and the fact that the latter doesn't even have 1&2 on the same cart (which thankfully the Battle Network collection rectified...)
I'd definitely like to see your take on Mega Maker though. It's one of those fangames that keeps on giving.
I would love if the last Legacy Collection made would be like a Mega Man Gems Collection if you will, basically all the more obscure Mega Man games they skipped out like Mega Man and Bass, the World games, Xtreme games, or even spin off games like Rock Board, X Command Mission, Network Transmission, Misadvenures of Tron Bonne (if they skip it for a hypothetical Legends Legacy Collection), Power Fighters games, Battle and Chase, you get the idea.
You should play the Wily Wars (i suggest an emulator or the genesis mini to subsidize slowdown)
Still my favorite way to play the OG 3 games
Sega Saturn ports are notoriously difficult. This is due to the architecture for the Saturn itself being notoriously difficult to program for, and as a result, getting Saturn games to work outside of their native environment is a nightmare; this is why Saturn-exclusive games rarely get ported/remade.
EDIT: Also, you can fight the robot masters through the art in the first Legacy Collection, this wasn't something new to Legacy Collection 2.
And when they do, it's marred with technical issues. Just look at the Cotton Collection.
This comment made my day.
THAT'S why Sonic R hasn't gotten a remake.
@@2DCheesewell Sonic R actually gets a pass considering it also had a PC port and that version then got ported to gems collection
My biggest complaint with Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 was in Mega man 8 how when you switch it over to japanese it does not have the ening creadits song from the japanese version.
You forgot about MegaMan soccer , MegaMan Legends.
Legacy Collection 2 is kind of a lazy port that I wish had an extra game or two, but it’s the easiest way in the modern era to play Megaman 9 and 10, which are INCREDIBLE games. If you don’t like the price, wait for a Steam sale and pick it up for $7, which is what I did. I accidentally deleted my MM10 save file years ago from the Wii Version, so it was a good opportunity to play it again, since the Wii Shop channel doesn’t exist anymore.
MMLC2 is a lazy port, because DE basically built a game engine from the ground up to get recreate the 8-bit Mega Man experience whereas MMLC2 is four ROMs on a disc. But getting both Mega Man 9 and 10 on physical media with all DLC is worth it. Digital distribution is the bane of my existence.
I would like to see a video on Mega Man Maker. Also, Rockman and Forte is my favorite classic game, despite some of its problems.
The Sega Saturn is notoriously difficult to emulate, whereas the PS1 is extremely easy to emulate. That’s why you often see the PS1 versions and not the Saturn versions ported everywhere.
We really need a collection of these underrated mega man games:
Mega man world games
Mega man Game Gear
Mega man the wily wars
Mega man & Bass
Mega man & Bass Challenger from the future
Mega man soccer
Mega man battle & chase
Mega man the power battle
Mega man 2 the power fighters
I know they are a lot but the handheld games should get their own collection and second collection for the other ones
About the Mega Man 8 Saturn version...
Yes, it is hard, Sega Saturn emulation is actually pretty complicated, so they couldn't add the Saturn version in LC2 even if they wanted to.
Recently, Saturn emulation has gotten incredible! There’s one Saturn emulator out there right now that is basically 100% like the original console.
I’d definitely be down for a mega man maker video!
3:05 I feel personally attacked
Nice epic video
id gladly take an XLC video... as long as we get a Zero/ZX legacy collection video too! glad to see you're back
I think mixing Legacy collection 1 and 2 and mix the games in the challenges is not really possible BECAUSE CAPCOM MADE THE SECOND COLLECTION instead of Digital Eclipse. Digital eclipse's ports work by porting the games into their Eclipse Engine, which they have already ported to every console, so they don't have to port games to each console nor have to use emulation. that's what i understand from Frank Cifaldi's GDC conference. I can only guess that since capcom made the second colelction, they used a totally different approach and didn't/couldn't reuse Digital Eclipse's engine since they didn't contract them again.
You can fight the robot masters from the gallery in the first collection as well.
11:25 Sega Saturn emulation is really hard. That's probably why.
I feel like they should have been the complete works versions
I’m now 5 hours into your channel and want to reiterate you’re doing awesome and I love these vids.
Make a video like this for all of the mega man legacy collections! Up to and including the battle network legacy collection 😊
Enjoyed your thoughts and yes to the X collection.
Technically legacy collection 2 was handled by m2, you’ll see them in the credits as was X legacy collection
OK, I’m genuinely interested in seeing you cover Mega Man Maker.
…maybe the Megaman X Legacy Collections, too?
I have been enjoying all of your videos. Thank you for making these.
I can feel your pain, i wish the X legacy collection had the X-treme games and that the Battle network Legacy collection had Network transmission.
My only complaint is only having time attack in the challenges for some bosses. I want to time attack all wily castle bosses!
Hey Jason try mega man battle and fighters on neo Geo pocket color on switch
I'd never played a Megaman game before this was included in a Humble Choice some time ago. I'd rather cover my nuts in flesh eating ants and tabasco sauce than ever touch it again tbh.
Great review!
What Mega Man Collection are you hoping Capcom releases next Tooterp?
The Mega Man Ultimate Legacy collection!! (all of them combined lol)
I had a few of the records with some of the online challenges. For the Switch. Well not first place except for one but was beaten and I think last I checked 3rd, but I have had a number on the top page 1-10
Instead of a Mega Man Maker video, what about a Mega Man Rom hack video ;P
I for sure want to play some rock hacks eventually!!
Good video, well done.
Okay great video. Now for the others Mega man collections 😂
can be play on ps5?
This reminds me of that one mm11 video u did back in the day before mm11 was announced lol
lolol I can't believe you remember that
Guys, can you select the Japanese versions in the second Legacy Collection?
Menu Music and Color is extreme nitpicking.
Saturn emulation is very difficult to pull off 11:39
Legacy Collection 1... the input lag was the first and most glaring issue that I noticed. It's so bad, it made me not want to play the games at all. The rewind button helps, but I shouldn't have to use it.
I want a Mega Man Maker video!
4:10 "While, of course, there are hackers at the top"....then what's the point of having leaderboards? It was the same issue with Sonic 4....the top 100 spots, were filled with people who had a time of 0:00:00. What's the point of having leaderboard when hackers will hack their time just to be at the top spots forever?
I'm also not a fan of having to use the glitches just to get the SILVER goal. You shouldn't be forced to use them. (Never even got them to work, no matter how many times I saw other people's replay to try to figure out how to flippin' do them.)
10:43 ULTRA LORD!!!!
The Mega Man Game Boy games were originally supposed to have their own Anniversary Collection
I have the 3DS Legacy Collection, and MM5 lags like crazy, but RM5 doesn't
dang that's really weird, I wonder if it has something to do with 3ds hardware?
Not having the complete works versions of these games Sucks
unh, the mode you ask for challenge is exactly what we got in the zero/zx games.
I feel like Legacy Collection 1 should have also included the complete works Navi mode versions
I've actually heard that these collections had input lag, but according to you they don't? I feel like I'm getting mixed opinions on it, and you're a speedrunner, so I would expect you to notice. I don't know who to believe.
They definitely have lag but it is'nt too egregious, especially Legacy Collection 2 it feels very tight (Playing on PS4).
Hey tooterp, if mega man and bass didn't exist, which game would be your favorite? My favorite is mega man 10. That game is a masterpeice
Probably Mega Man 2, but Mega Man 10 is also great!
If they made One Game with Megaman 1 - 10 (Optional Navi Mode from Anniversary Included)
Megaman World 1-5, both Arcade Games and Battle and Chase
Physical Release for 60€ I would buy
I don't see the point in owning a digital collection if they are not gonna add some really good extra features.
Hey Jason try the wily wars also try the sequel wars the sequel wars they only did Mega Man 4 they already have a trailer for 5
im pretty sure the legacy collection 2 games were ports not emulation. even 7 and 8 were ports i think
tooterp watches magus zero let's goooooo.(although of course he hasn't seen his mmz content for obvious reasons lol)
he's still a great youtuber lol
Ok, talk about X!
I mean, the problem with the collections is 1 is so, so much better than 2. 2 has X7 and X7 is death.
A ton of the things about Legacy Collection 2 are the way they are for a simple reason: LC2 isn't emulation, at all. It's just straight ports, and not very good ones at that.
Wily Wars would had been the perfect unlockable for beating MM 1 - 3.
your just saying that Rockman And Forte would be really really good because you love that game and you cared on what other people thought about the rewind?
(in short we don't all like Rockman And Forte)
thank you very much. please make a mega man maker video. heck, make 12. x collection too.
Capcom arcade 2nd stadium has the 2 fighting games
I want you to make a Mega Man Maker video so I tell you otherwise you will not.
If you do, look up NRS (noreset speedrun) and MST (MegaSpeedruns) tournament packs for some awesome levels :)
Well here what personally bother on the mega man legacy collections as well some explains:
Explains:
1.I belive why they ipted for the ps1 version of 8 instead of the saturn version is probably from their perspective is "the option that will sold better since it sold better on PS1" not much to say I am pretty sure the ps1 versoon sold more anf that why they opted for it
2.why isn't on the 3DS is probably for it's emulatoon issue like you need a new 3DS to have snes games to run on the platform I have no idea how it work but I learnt a bit how emultation work and is just not optional to run snes games properly on a normal 3DS so imagine this and a gen 5 title not sure on mega man 9 and 10 but I can say if mm8 was on the 3ds it would run awfully
Complains:
1.the lack of movement and combat costumazation that kinda bother me mega man powered up give the option to play with mega having the slide and cgarge shot and I feel like it could be cool if you can slide or charge in mm1 and 2 and to make clear also the option to disable if you don't want to
2.having anniversary mode for voice acting: as much as funny the voice acting on 8 can be I think ig shpuld have an option for a more proffesional boice acting to match the cutscenes and tone
3.having a balance mode: basically the option to modify how much you wamt from each weapon obtained to either challenge yourself, make yourself overpowered or give yourself balanced gameplay like you can press a button to choose balance mode, and modify how much ammo you will have from each weapon of the respective game and same goes to the energy or ammo drops felt like a missed oppertunity and could make games that I hold gripes with weapon balancing like mm1,2,5 and 8 to have much more fair and square gameplay
4.bass not having it's double jump from mega man and bass: yeah I just feel like he should have the option to hold it I don't say know to more manuvering options and that goes to double jumps too
5.the save state system in legacy collectoon 2 yeah is feel like they should either give more health when starting a save state or full health like that what I belive should be the option if you ask me
And well that my list please let me know your thoughts
A mega man maker video would be nice
Yes please, make a video about Mega Man Maker
Not having the option to toggle between sega saturn and ps1 MM8 is really annoying. MMX legacy collection has the same problem with MMX3 (no ps1 version) which is even stupider considering they're already emulating X4 (a ps1 game)
if i use wide, and im a subscriber. does that also mean im weird?
yes but then it's weird in a good way B)
Mega Man Maker video plz and ty.
I would love to see a video on the Megaman X Legacy Collection and also a video on the most dateable robot master from Megamans 1-11
I love Megaman Maker. It's a "Do it" for me
11:20 No its not that hard these are NES games running on PS4 hardware. When we got games like Witcher and FF15 on PS4 there’s absolutely no excuse.
Please do a mega man maker video!
Capcom compiles its Mega Man games.
Gaming Community: "But we want it to be moah!"
HI JJ 🙉
I grew up with the Anniversary collection on the GameCube and Nostalgia bias aside, I think anniversary is better (Apart from the credits in megaman 7 and mega Man 9 and 10 not being in it because they weren't even a thing yet)
Even though Legacy Collection had better emulation that was scaled properly. It also had better content unlike Anniversary Collection's crappy remix songs and those crappy videos - that was nearly FMV quality from those CD based systems in the early 90s - featuring an Mega Man episode from G4's Game Makers (GameCube) and the first episode of the original 90s Mega Man cartoon (PS2). Of course no one talks about that here because this comment section is a damn echo chamber just to prove a self fulling prophecy that the Golden Age companies are crap today.
@@Capcomgirl25 Well I got news... THE REMIXES ARE OPTIONAL
@@connorplays6263 They still sounded terrible and you can tell Atomic Planet was inexperienced judging by the muffled tones of the original and remixes they tried emulating.
X collection, talk about it
Thank you
as samey as the Legacy collection's menus look, i'd do prefer the choice of using the games' actual pixel art font instead of the soulless sans seirf font capcom has used in every collection since. I HATE those samey looking ahh sans serif fonts every japanese dev uses in every remaster/collection
My biggest disappointment with the Mega Man collection 2 was it leaving out electrical communication for Rockman 8. Actually I wound up up buying Rockman 8 on the Saturn just so I could have the experience. I know I could just watch the video on RUclips but it's not the same
You can technically watch after you beat the game, once you go through the credits and let the game go back to the menu, kinda dumb they skip the openings in the games
It was more about the song, I was disappointed that they didn't put electrical Communication in there. Because I still have the PS1 version and like I said I bought the Rockman 8 for the Saturn just for the song
@@spadekun9899 oh wow your right, that themes so much better
12:58 😪 My 10 year old Motorola phone has more save states, shaders and screen filters then this! So NO, your not crazy, your the only sane person asking for what we should have gotten at bare minimum.
They need to be on par with current emulation if they don’t want us pirating.
If you're talkin about challenges I believe Mega Man Legacy Collection 1 definitely has the best challenges
I agree
Honestly, I prefer to play anniversary than collection
Where is super adventure rockman mega man powered up
That would have been so cool if they added Super Adventure Rockman lol
5:48 No that's not a real big slap in the face, BUT NOT USING THE ROCKMAN COMPLETE WORKS IS THE SLAP IN THE FACE! Why? The original PS1 versions absolutely add enhanced music, better controls like Megaman 10, but YEARS before it.. Fixed hitboxes though Megaman 2 is the strange one that does make the PS1 version harder than the originals. It corrects the game's wonky hitboxes and many bugs! The lack of Rockman and Forte is annoying beyond belief. I want a THIRD LEGACY COLLECTION or call it " Megaman/Rockman World Collection! As it's a good way to sum up Wily Wars + Game Gear, GB games, and maybe two Megaman and Bass games... Maybe the option for GBA or SNES versions, including the wonderswan game.
strongly disagree with the challenges in legacy collection 2 not having multiple games combined being bad. mega man 1-6 were all made for the same system, making challenges that span across those games is easy and feasible. making challenges that span across the SNES, PS1, and PS3/360/Wii would be virtually impossible
Make a Mega Man Maker video.
And also not playing wily bosses
Saludos!
I know they weren't official demakes, but I would have liked it if the NES versions of Mega Man 7 and 8 were included, as I've always preferred the minimalist NES sprites and tiles. I always skip 7 and 8 and go straight to 9 and 10.
Legacy Collection 2 definitely should have included Rockman Battle & Chase and Rockman & Forte. There was no real reason not to, because they're already emulating the consoles they're on. Even just as bonus content with no extras or enhancements. And, at the very least, it would have the same amount of games as the first collection.
Also, would definitely like to see you make a video about Mega Man Maker. Maybe you could even do livestreams of subscriber submitted levels.
how am I so early
idk
I have noticed input lag on mine, frankly, but it was no where near as bad as the input lag I experienced on the Mega Man X Legacy Collection. I know my X games, and I know the timing. It fucked with me way too much for me to even enjoy them.
Or a mega man portable collection
True that would be awesome, the GB games, Xtreme games, Powered up, Maverick Hunter X, maybe that one rush marine game for flip phones as a bonus lol
