On paper, Mega Man X is a step up from the classic series in every regard. The X series has got a very solid and fun foundation. The actual games built on that foundation however... Vary in quality a lot, to say the least. Despite having a really strong core, most of the X series games fall short for me in level design department. Even though the games are very fun mechanically, I dont't really have fun actually getting through most of them. So the classic series is definitely better in my eyes. The best thing about the X series - it paved the way and passed on that strong core to the very best Mega Man series, the Zero series.
I'm a big Megaman X fan and Is my favourite,the First one especially.However i like coming back to the classic series too and i like it's lighter tone. Megaman Zero Is awesome too but i find myself playing It less.
@damsen978 You don't even need elves. You just need to get Rank A - S to get new moves from Zero 2 onward. I only play it less than X because 1. It's longer than the X games 2. It's sweaty, you gotta give 100% attention to play these games 3. It's not casual play. It's definitely requires a higher skill level in terms of precision and movement.
I think that the limitation of mega man's abilities in the classic series allows for tighter design with more emphasis on tight platforming and enemy placement, which is why I prefer it over the x seriies
While classic megaman might be more consistent; those first 5 megaman X games are amazing in my opinion, I love the exploration in them and trying to beat them with the least amount of backtracking
I like Classic but prefer X and Z. There's a lot of yoku blocks, enemies leaping from bottomless pits, spike falls and mandatory usage of sub weapon/items (in the first 3 games) that dampens my opinion of the Classic games.
No, I agree. My favorite game of all time is X2. It's my go-to game that I keep playing when I'm happy, when I'm sad, or when I just need to enjoy myself. And I love X6 because how broke that game is. However, subjectively, Classic is better. Ps: I did played X without boots upgrade. I had to. RetroAchievements made me do it.
BASED. If I could change just *ONE FECKING THING* about X6 though... Zero's "up slash" in the air is the DUMBEST SHIT EVER, especially for a game that revolves around high enemy density over bottomless pits with a billion climbing ropes, and nowhere to Giga Attack.

The whole reason the game is bad, is the bloody upslash.
Well, Zero is only broken if you exploit SDC. Without that, X's 4th Armor with the Plasma Shot is completely overpowered and intended to be so by the programmers. He clears the screen (and off screen) enemies and generally shreds mid-bosses. And his charged weapons have safer kill options for all bosses, including Sigma.

The OG Megaman really has no bad main line entry (yes even 8 is good despite some flaws). The X series on the otherhand started getting bad after X4 or 5.

The correct answer is neither. It's ZX. Can't really beat a Megavania running of the X formula. All they need to do was expand the overworld and make it feel less linear.
I am not looking at franchise consistency. I am looking at individual games. From where I stand, nothing touches Megaman X4. It's action platform perfection.
I'm the one and only person here to say that I use bombs in cut man's stage. At the end of the stage, if you don't have ice slasher yet, you can spam hyper bomb from the ladder to kill the annoying big eye without taking damage.
100% agree classic is better, but it’s individual… I have not much time, I play short rounds … and believe it or not I still play Mega Man 2 and 6, Bomberman 2 and 4 … Mario Bros. 1 regularly from time to time. I really love the X series too… it looks much better, Upgrades are on point … but it cost more time and… personally, Mega Man is to big 😁 the the ladders too. I think Mario World is better or Mario 3 but it’s not the same I start Mario bros and play a round, quit and all in 5-10min. It’s perfect for me. My biggest love is ghost n goblins arcade… I would always choose it over Mega Man… but Mega has the free choice… and this makes it so great repayable. And by the way I would love a resurrection version of Mega Man classic
I like both, but my favorite is the Megaman X series. But I have to acknowledge that Megaman X has less consistency in quality. Even though I prefer the X series. And my favorite thing that megaman has that other games don't have is MEGAMAN. Mario doesn't have megaman, Socnic doesn't have megaman, Bomber man doesn't have megaman, and so on. You cannot play with megaman in those games. Hahahaha. In addition to that, megaman looks like Master Mind, both are blue. Here in Brazil, the title version of Master Mind is MEGA MENTE, which sounds like Mega Man in the Brazilian accent.
Can you imagine how crazy a 3D Mega Man game would be? That would be terrible. It would probably be called something odd, like Mega Man Legends or Mega Man 64 lmao. I have a deep respect for both Mega Man and X, it's hard to choose.
As someone who only play a game once, i think X series has better new player experience than classic. Classic has annoying enemies & annoying stages that probably will make some players rage quit the game. Which is usually no longer an issue when replaying the game since you already know what to expect.
To be fair, i played Mega Man X first. X , X2, and X3 are the best out of the X series but if were talking Mega Man, ive only played Mega Man 11 for Switch. I need to actually play the other Mega Man classic games myself to give a fair critique

Which ones better? Depends on WHEN you ask me. Basically from the time of x to x4, x was the best because it was against mm7 and 8. But then mm9 dropped and is the perfect mm game and by then we had the last half of X and it was dead.
I generally prefer the classic games for several reasons. Firstly the classic characters are extremely charming and memorable. Rock, Roll, Blues, Auto, etc. are likeable. It's also more colorful and lively. The level design is mostly the same, but the levels actually have challenge. The problem with the X games are that the wall climb ruins the challenging level design. By being able to climb walls and dash around like Sonic makes the levels way too easy. Most levels in MMX games are just a joke. The main challenge is the boss fights. They are very fast and challenging. But the classic robot masters were also challenging. Another thing I don't like about the X series is the special weapons you acquire don't feel that meaningful. The X games give you so much armor and a powerful charge shot so it makes the weakness order sort of redundant, especially the later X games. Lastly I don't like the characters much in the X series. They're always angry and humorless. X is really not a likeable hero, compared to classic Rockman. Zero is cool, but he feels somewhat out of place. And I especially hate the animal headed robot masters. They just look stupid and goofy. A pink, ninja, man, robot, centipede? WTF am I looking at? I like the collectable gameplay of Sub Tanks and Heart Tanks in the X games and getting upgrades is cool. The classic games can feel too minimal at times though. So it's a sort of mix up between the two series.
If you love the idea of playing MegaMan/X with friends in multiplayer... you should REALLY look into 20XX and 30XX. But I *am* gonna make this simple. Play Guts Man's level. Play Armored Armadillo's level. Mega Man X is clearly, by a country mile, FAR superior to Mega Man 1. The end.

Not even a question. Classic series annihilates X series like how Storm Tornado annihilates Mega Man X. Mega Man X games all have different set of problems but if we dig deeper we might see a pattern. Except X7 that game has an entire book of problems. Mega Man X games have forgettable enemies. I get how everything looks soulless but that soul less nature makes me forget enemies in this game, If you send me a picture of enemy and ask me which game is it from, I would struggle. Mega Man X games also have a problem with difficulty balancing. Games like X4 and X5 and maybe even X2 feel way too easy while games like X3, X6 and X8 feel way too difficult. X4 and especially in X5 you can tank through enemies and would not need to worry about it. Balancing is another issue about stage lenghts. All games have stages that are either too long or too short for what they are. Weapon balance is also off. Only X1 and X2 and maybe X3 have good weapons. The stages are so stale in these games that you don't want to use special weapons and save them for bosses. Repetition is another problem with X series. We see a challenge and it is repeated five to six times without any change. Classic series on the other hand is memorable, consistently difficult, balances about stage lengths and weapons and just plane round creative.
So the Doc Robot stages are the reason that mega man 3 is the best NES game so using that as a reason to not talk about greatness of mega man classic vs X is a false statement to begin with. There were a few other "errors" that I'll avoid nitpicking but that one made me sit up and look at my keyboard. It's as simple as the classic series doesn't have any bad games (7 is the worst and it's still an A), and X6-X8 are not good games, maybe not bad, but they aren't good. Mega Man X has higher highs but much much much lower lows. X and X2 and X4 are arguably better than the top 3 classic games, but I'd put 9 over X and X4 though, X2 is the peak of video games, so, it's hard, but the classic series is obviously the better series. Also for whatnot I have no idea how to use a phone or a QR code thing and an app on my phone, I'm 90 years old according to my thumbs and brain content. Also Rockman CX has a quick man option that allows you to climb the walls, and that hack is stupid so having Quick Man being able to wall jump does make it a better experience, but 9/10 times I'd agree with the assesment that mm would be worse with wall jumping. NO, MEGA MAN 1 (LIKE ONE 1987) HAS THE BEST MENU OF THEM ALL BY FAR 100% IT'S THE BEST I'LL TYPE IN CAPS THE REST OF THE COMMENTS NOW BECAUSE THAT'S AN ERROR! X series has higher highs but lower lows. Classic series is generally consistent. I think X1-X4 I think are better than the entire Classic series but X6 and X7 are some of the weakest Megaman games in the entire franchise. X5 and X8 are a bit better than those weird middle entries in the Classic series(4--7)

I love both series for their own reasons, but objectively, I think Rock has the better games, because the quality is more consistent across the majority of his games, which is more than I can say for his younger brother, X. Out of all 8!l games, I only like 4 of them: 1, 4, 5 and 8.

Sorry X: 5, 6, & 7 brought down the X series a lot and the classic didn't have any games that bad. If it were for the first 4 X games I'd say the X games were better but that's not how things turned out
I think I should go with each X game's individual faults. X1: X1, for a Mega Man game is almost perfect from start to finish. There are flaws. I am not a fan of starting with Half Life especially with exploration elements. Would have preferred if we gained 2hp by defeating a Maverick. Also the fact that The Dash is in Chill Penguin's stage makes it more linear that it should. X2: There's nothing inherently wrong with X2 on a macro level. Except it is bit easy for my taste, some secrets are very cryptic and stages are too short for what they are. X2 has a lot of small game design mistakes that makes it less enjoyable than 1. X3: X3 is mediocre. The game lacks apparent enemy diversity, enemies do way too damage and absurd amount of backtracking. And besides the stages are just uninteresting corridors with same enemies repeating over and over again with no set pieces or gimmicks. X4: X4 have 3 major sins that make the game much worse. Enemies do too little damage, Health energy drop like candy and gameovers aren't harsh eneough. If these three faults were fixed, would have made the game much better. Maybe even better than X1. But as it stands, X4 is too easy. X5: X5 does all the things X4 does wrong and adds on to them. At least in X4, dying matters. X5 is ugly from start finish. Lacks enemy diversity. Repetition is real and the worst part. Alia! She interrupts from playing the game saying the most boring stuff ever made. X6: X6 has the same problems as X4 and X5 but unlike X5, X6's flow is much better. X7: Needs a full book. X8: My main problem with X8 is the same as my problem with Mega Man 8. The game style is too deviant from what Mega Man is supposed to be. And Mega Man 8 is a beautiful game but this game ugly from start to finish.
X1 - Near flawless, impressive evolution on the classic formula. X2 - Mostly a wash. I wish there was a greater consequence for not getting Zero's parts than having him be a brainwashed, semi-final boss, like maybe an extra stage before fighting him. At least the double-charge shot and midair dash were better thought out.. X3 - Tried to cram in too much with too many undercooked ideas. Megaman's basic format might give it some non-linearity, but it's not Metroid. The best new idea was the chance to kill the sub-bosses and get an altered final stage, and even that could've been expanded on. Also starting with this game, every boss rush will be painfully tedious. X4 - More streamlined and enough variety in the stage gimmicks to stay interesting. Definitely the 2nd best of the series. The only blemish is, of course, the boss rush. X5 - Mostly the same complaint as MMX3 - the big, new gimmick was needlessly complicated. Otherwise it's an inferior clone of X4. X7 - Couldn't even get through the whole thing. The camera almost single-handedly tanks it. X6 and X8 I haven't played

I enjoy both, and most of the different series have some stinkers. But in terms of overall quality, classic has better consistency.

My biggest love is ghost n goblins arcade… I would always choose it over Mega Man… but Mega has the free choice… and this makes it so great repayable.

I like both, but my favorite is the Megaman X series. But I have to acknowledge that Megaman X has less consistency in quality. Even though I prefer the X series. And my favorite thing that megaman has that other games don't have is MEGAMAN. Mario doesn't have megaman, Socnic doesn't have megaman, Bomber man doesn't have megaman, and so on. You cannot play with megaman in those games. Hahahaha. In addition to that, megaman looks like Master Mind, both are blue. Here in Brazil, the title version of Master Mind is MEGA MENTE, which sounds like Mega Man in the Brazilian accent.

Can you imagine how crazy a 3D Mega Man game would be? That would be terrible. It would probably be called something odd, like Mega Man Legends or Mega Man 64 lmao. I have a deep respect for both Mega Man and X, it's hard to choose.

Mega man was cute. But Megaman X and X4 got me into the series. Megaman Zero then solidified me as a fan.

As someone who only play a game once, i think X series has better new player experience than classic.
Classic has annoying enemies & annoying stages that probably will make some players rage quit the game. Which is usually no longer an issue when replaying the game since you already know what to expect.

To be fair, i played Mega Man X first. X , X2, and X3 are the best out of the X series but if were talking Mega Man, ive only played Mega Man 11 for Switch. I need to actually play the other Mega Man classic games myself to give a fair critique

@@Neethan3247 I would disagree I think X, X3, X2 in that order are the best. I find the graphics and artstyle worked way better in 16bit, also the soundtracks in X-X3 are so much more appealing and memorable than X4 and so is the leveldesign.
Which ones better? Depends on WHEN you ask me. Basically from the time of x to x4, x was the best because it was against mm7 and 8. But then mm9 dropped and is the perfect mm game and by then we had the last half of X and it was dead.
I generally prefer the classic games for several reasons. Firstly the classic characters are extremely charming and memorable. Rock, Roll, Blues, Auto, etc. are likeable. It's also more colorful and lively. The level design is mostly the same, but the levels actually have challenge. The problem with the X games are that the wall climb ruins the challenging level design. By being able to climb walls and dash around like Sonic makes the levels way too easy. Most levels in MMX games are just a joke. The main challenge is the boss fights. They are very fast and challenging. But the classic robot masters were also challenging. Another thing I don't like about the X series is the special weapons you acquire don't feel that meaningful. The X games give you so much armor and a powerful charge shot so it makes the weakness order sort of redundant, especially the later X games. Lastly I don't like the characters much in the X series. They're always angry and humorless. X is really not a likeable hero, compared to classic Rockman. Zero is cool, but he feels somewhat out of place. And I especially hate the animal headed robot masters. They just look stupid and goofy. A pink, ninja, man, robot, centipede? WTF am I looking at? I like the collectable gameplay of Sub Tanks and Heart Tanks in the X games and getting upgrades is cool. The classic games can feel too minimal at times though. So it's a sort of mix up between the two series.
If you love the idea of playing MegaMan/X with friends in multiplayer... you should REALLY look into 20XX and 30XX.
But I *am* gonna make this simple. Play Guts Man's level. Play Armored Armadillo's level.
Mega Man X is clearly, by a country mile, FAR superior to Mega Man 1. The end.

I prefer the classic because I like the characters and vibe better. Plus, the X games got so bad at X5 for me that I just stopped following them altogether. You may not want to consider that latter point in your decision, but I will.
What do you mean play Mega Man X without dash boots? As far as I know, you can't skip them. I suppose you can pick the level they are in last. Is that what you meant?
Not even a question. Classic series annihilates X series like how Storm Tornado annihilates Mega Man X.
Mega Man X games all have different set of problems but if we dig deeper we might see a pattern. Except X7 that game has an entire book of problems. Mega Man X games have forgettable enemies. I get how everything looks soulless but that soul less nature makes me forget enemies in this game, If you send me a picture of enemy and ask me which game is it from, I would struggle.
Mega Man X games also have a problem with difficulty balancing. Games like X4 and X5 and maybe even X2 feel way too easy while games like X3, X6 and X8 feel way too difficult. X4 and especially in X5 you can tank through enemies and would not need to worry about it.
Balancing is another issue about stage lenghts. All games have stages that are either too long or too short for what they are. Weapon balance is also off. Only X1 and X2 and maybe X3 have good weapons. The stages are so stale in these games that you don't want to use special weapons and save them for bosses.
Repetition is another problem with X series. We see a challenge and it is repeated five to six times without any change.
Classic series on the other hand is memorable, consistently difficult, balances about stage lengths and weapons and just plane round creative.

So the Doc Robot stages are the reason that mega man 3 is the best NES game so using that as a reason to not talk about greatness of mega man classic vs X is a false statement to begin with. There were a few other "errors" that I'll avoid nitpicking but that one made me sit up and look at my keyboard.
It's as simple as the classic series doesn't have any bad games (7 is the worst and it's still an A), and X6-X8 are not good games, maybe not bad, but they aren't good.
Mega Man X has higher highs but much much much lower lows. X and X2 and X4 are arguably better than the top 3 classic games, but I'd put 9 over X and X4 though, X2 is the peak of video games, so, it's hard, but the classic series is obviously the better series.
Also for whatnot I have no idea how to use a phone or a QR code thing and an app on my phone, I'm 90 years old according to my thumbs and brain content.
Also Rockman CX has a quick man option that allows you to climb the walls, and that hack is stupid so having Quick Man being able to wall jump does make it a better experience, but 9/10 times I'd agree with the assesment that mm would be worse with wall jumping.

X series has higher highs but lower lows. Classic series is generally consistent. I think X1-X4 I think are better than the entire Classic series but X6 and X7 are some of the weakest Megaman games in the entire franchise. X5 and X8 are a bit better than those weird middle entries in the Classic series(4--7)

I'm a be real with you. I love both series for their own reasons, but objectively, I think Rock has the better games, because the quality is more consistent across the majority of his games, which is more than I can say for his younger brother, X. Out of all 8!l games, I only like 4 of them: 1, 4, 5 and 8.

Based upon the fact the classic series didn't have much of a template and that the original didn't have any really bad games I'm inclined to say the classic is better. Sorry X: 5, 6, & 7 brought down the X series a lot and the classic didn't have any games that bad. If it were for the first 4 X games I'd say the X games were better but that's not how things turned out
I think I should go with each X game's individual faults.
X1: X1, for a Mega Man game is almost perfect from start to finish. There are flaws. I am not a fan of starting with Half Life especially with exploration elements. Would have preferred if we gained 2hp by defeating a Maverick. Also the fact that The Dash is in Chill Penguin's stage makes it more linear that it should.
X2: There's nothing inherently wrong with X2 on a macro level. Except it is bit easy for my taste, some secrets are very cryptic and stages are too short for what they are. X2 has a lot of small game design mistakes that makes it less enjoyable than 1.
X3: X3 is mediocre. The game lacks apparent enemy diversity, enemies do way too damage and absurd amount of backtracking. And besides the stages are just uninteresting corridors with same enemies repeating over and over again with no set pieces or gimmicks.
X4: X4 have 3 major sins that make the game much worse. Enemies do too little damage, Health energy drop like candy and gameovers aren't harsh eneough. If these three faults were fixed, would have made the game much better. Maybe even better than X1. But as it stands, X4 is too easy.
X5: X5 does all the things X4 does wrong and adds on to them. At least in X4, dying matters. X5 is ugly from start finish. Lacks enemy diversity. Repetition is real and the worst part. Alia! She interrupts from playing the game saying the most boring stuff ever made.
X6: X6 has the same problems as X4 and X5 but unlike X5, X6's flow is much better.
X7: Needs a full book.
X8: My main problem with X8 is the same as my problem with Mega Man 8. The game style is too deviant from what Mega Man is supposed to be. And Mega Man 8 is a beautiful game but this game ugly from start to finish.
I agree with some criticisms, but I feel some are a bit harsh, lol!

X1 - Near flawless, impressive evolution on the classic formula.
X2 - Mostly a wash. I wish there was a greater consequence for not getting Zero's parts than having him be a brainwashed, semi-final boss, like maybe an extra stage before fighting him. At least the double-charge shot and midair dash were better thought out..
X3 - Tried to cram in too much with too many undercooked ideas. Megaman's basic format might give it some non-linearity, but it's not Metroid. The best new idea was the chance to kill the sub-bosses and get an altered final stage, and even that could've been expanded on. Also starting with this game, every boss rush will be painfully tedious.
X4 - More streamlined and enough variety in the stage gimmicks to stay interesting. Definitely the 2nd best of the series. The only blemish is, of course, the boss rush.
X5 - Mostly the same complaint as MMX3 - the big, new gimmick was needlessly complicated. Otherwise it's an inferior clone of X4.
X7 - Couldn't even get through the whole thing. The camera almost single-handedly tanks it.
X6 and X8 I haven't played

Imagine X5, but worse and without a good story. That's X6. 2 Armor Sets that need to be completed to use them. Questionable level design. A big gimmick that causes more problems than anything else. It's not a good game.
X8 is a mediocre return to form. It's not bad. Just could be way better.
