  • This video is about How to do - Pigeon pose or Eka Pada Raja Kapotasana in Sanskrit, which means "one-legged king pigeon pose".
Pigeon pose helps relieve tight hips particularly the abductors of outer hip muscles and the hip flexor of the back leg. Releasing the psoas muscle (major hip flexor) can help relieve stress which builds up from sitting or being in fight or flight mode.
Three variations of the pose are shown here: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Be sure to warm up adequately before trying out these poses or do a full class leading up to the Pigeon from the Kuthuta Yoga Online Studio:

Her leg as you can see when she folds it up toward the ceiling, it is longer then mine:). So if your leg isnot that long, it is harder to wrap it with just your finger the way she does it here.

Practicing every day is a great idea! Yoga is actually designed to be done every day. I have seen students make great strides after even a couple of weeks of daily practice. Though I say take at least one day off a week. I have an open to all class in my online studio every 1st Monday of the month that you are free to join.
The link is app.namastream.com/kuthuta-yoga/buy/product/26782 All you have to do is sign up and then you will find the class, with all their details under the Events tab. I look forward to seeing you there.

Is there a pre-beginner level? Having leaned to the left to bend the left knee, I can only get my body 30 degrees off the floor. If I get my body upright and hips level, then my left shin is 30 degrees from vertical.

I do. Aches and pains in my knees and hips is what made me start yoga. I still get them time to time but not as bad and yoga has given me the knowledge to move my body in safer ways. Also I have noticed through increase awareness from yoga how different foods affects my joints.

I say as long as you are feeling a stretch and nothing is overwhelming or injuring keep going. The purpose is the stretch the outer hip and if that is happening you have achieved the purpose of the pose. The more you do the pose, the more your hips will ease and the deeper you'll be able to get into the pose

@@kuthutayoga9205 I get pain from the sideways pressure on lower leg in the knee before I get any stretch in the hips, any suggestions please? Is there another exercise to help people become flexible enough for the beginner pose? Thank - you for thinking of beginners but please could you think of inflexible beginners?

No shade but I just find it awkward when you put those books under your crotch or touch you feet to them, just stating my opinion, it's your video and your decision for what you want to use. Good and informative video though.

Thanks for your feedback. I didn't have any yoga blocks at the time and I know many other people don't but wanted to show how one can improvise. Fortunately, a student donated a couple of lovely sturdy blocks to me. With regular yoga practice, you get over yourself and others too. LOL we all have a body and the less subconscious we are the more we can do both off and on the mat
