Can you please tell me how to do this but printing in multiple signatures! I'm making a book and the paper is thick and I can only do signatures with no more than 4 sheets of paper. I am doing a hard cover book so my file won't be the actual covers of the book plus I'm doing multiple signatures

so I want to print it in this way, but at my school we cannot print right from the computer. we have to upload the pdf file and then print it. if do this whole process it wont safe the pdf because it says that the printer wont work. so how can I avoid using the printing option but still use this way for making the magazine in a pdf file where the pages match.
I am trying to make a booklet from my 8.5 x 11 inch sheet into four pages on a side, say 5.5 high by roughly 3.75 wide, printed on both sides. I have tried maybe 20 times and can’t figure it out. I want to make sure the margin on the left is only .5 inches or less and not to wide from the spine. I have a paper trimmer so I can trim on the right edge. I would kindly appreciate any help you have. The book is approximately 36 or 40 pages. Most sincerely Gene
You can send me the document you are trying to print to nicki@digitalhartmedia.com and I can look at your setup and suggest solutions from there. With the pages smaller than the sheet and the ability to trim, I'm guessing you are having trouble lining it all up correctly to fold when printing double-sided. It's much easier when you are filling the entire page size you have but I can look at the document you have now and see what settings you need to tweak.
Thanks for the great tute. One thing that seems tricky for me is to have my back cover line up on the correct page. I always seem to end up with a blank page on the back cover rather than what I want.
+Bill Lang Just to clear that up - the back page is back page is blank and the image ends up on page 34 - even when I add empty pages on he end of the book. (It is a 36 pager with content only to page 33. The back cover should effectively be p 36

Thank you for this helpful tutorial. I have a 52 page book i would like to print as a booklet. when I print the booklet on an HP8600, which allows for duplex printing, the back side is printed upside down. Can you help me resolve this issue? Thank you for any (more) help with printing my booklet.
This usually has to do with the binding setting on your printer. You usually have an option to bind on the left or top. This setting is somewhere in your print settings when you go to print. It's different for each printer. Try swapping this setting and see if it prints correctly.
Hi, When I print to postscript it doesn't save the spreads as two pages (saves each page individually). This doesn't happen when I go directly to test print on my home printer. Trying to save the file to send to the printers. Driving me nuts, please help.
Did you ask the printer what they prefer? Most actually want publication pages as their own page, not in spreads. Spreads is more help to the designer than the printer. The postscript file isn't actually like your final PDF if you print to PDF from a PC. You need to use Distiller to format your final PDF as the postscript file won't have all those settings in place by itself.
Hmm, when I look at my preview everything looks perfect (like yours). But After I Distill the postscript file it only shows half the pages and they are all on there own individual page, does not look correct like the preview. - Does that sound correct? If so, what do I have to do after that.

I don't understand why, but some times it works perfectly, but in other cases it doesn't. For example, recently I exported to pdf a two-paged document. Johnny Hernández this usually happens when I have two or more master pages and only set a transparent rectangle on one. You need to apply it to all text pages for the PDF preset to apply to them. If you are using only the A-Master, check that you have the rectangle across both left and right pages/spreads.

I'm on an iMac, running InDesign CC and am trying to get my booklet into pdf form so I can have it printed somewhere(Staples, etc. because I don't have a printer and my school printer isn't capable) else. I can't find Adobe Distiller online, so I looked around and saw that I can do this through the Preview App. When I create a pdf of it, they appear as single individual pages rather than side by side pages. Viewing the pdf in 'two page' made shows that the pages are still in the correct order that I would like for them to be printed, but will they print side by side(and front and back) in that order (on a single sheet of paper)? I'm concerned that viewing the document in 'two page' mode is merely for preference of viewing than purpose of printing. Your video was extremely helpful in figuring this out, thank you so much!
Xchovenei If you have a CC subscription, Distiller should be available to download from Adobe Manager. If your printer knows what they are doing, they can arrange your current PDF to print what you need for a back to back booklet, but that might not be the case for Staples. Essentially what Print to Booklet does is put your individual pages into one printable sheet in the order you want. For example, a 6x9 booklet actually is 12x9 flat and the actual pages are not in order in the way you design them. Take two regular sheets of paper, fold them like a booklet and number each page 1-8 and you'll see what I mean. These spreads are what you printer needs to print the booklet in the right order. If you don't have Distiller, you can design your booklet the old fashioned way which means you design in the booklet order on full spreads (like the paper mockup) versus on 1-8 individual pages in your document. I think a video on this alternate method would be ideal!
Hi Marilee, If your printer can print double-sided, you can select that option in your printer settings and it should print double-sided. This video doesn't cover individual printer setups because there are many and each one is a little different in how it works.
Great Video!!! Ok, I managed to "print" my 88-page booklet using "Print Booklet" to a pdf file, but the pages in the pdf file are all cut off. I have re-done this 8 times now and I can't figure out why the paper size isn't matching up. It looks good in the "Print Booklet" preview, but then it's wrong in the pdf file. Any idea why? TIA.

Ashley w usually Macs don't have the Print to PDF option, but you may not have the PDF printer installed on your PC. If you can create a postscript file, you need to use Adobe Distiller to create your final PDF.
Do you have an instructional on how to do it using postscript ? The MACs at our school do have Print PDF, but I am working from home. When I save as postscript my PC cannot/will not open the file. Or how do I install the PDF printer on my computer ?

8 years on and this video is still helping the community. Thank you for such a clear and detailed video. All went well with the project until mid-printing I ran out of ink and had to stop the printer after 121. Now when I tried to print the balance pages, choosing print/range from 121 to 282, the pagination gets completely distorted, i.e ID considers page 121 as the "cover" and wants to print the back cover behind 121. Do you have a solution for this please? Is there a way to make ID print the booklet in the same page order within a page range? Your help is appreciated.

What paper size did you put on the Indesign because my said warning the booklet doesn’t fit the current paper size. Click print settings to specify a larger paper size or to scale the booklet to fit.

It's confusing that you set the first two pages as 1 and 2 and then have the rest of the pages 1, 2, etc. One thing useful to mention is that saddle-stitched books need to have pages in multiples of 4, or the pagination won't work correctly, but by numbering the first two as 1, 2 makes the numbers wonky. Better to set the pages as C1, C2 (using Layout > Numbering and Section Options), standard page numbers, then last two pages C3, C4 (using Layout > Numbering and Section Options). Then we have C1-C4 is 4 pages and the rest of your pages are 16, which is divisible by 4, so we know they're correct.

Hi, thanks for the tutorial. I have an issue with a magazine project I’m working on. This magazine is 48 pages (covers included) and its gonna be bound with staples so I need to leave a creep, so I go to print booklet and set the value. The covers are black (front and back) and when I export to PDF it makes a white line between the front and back of the covers and I don’t want that. Do you know how can I solve this? I have gain so much knowledge from this tutorial but I have a one confusion. You learnt that if you save pdf in booklet on pc then you can save (4X6 booklet default) and I will save pdf on mac I can change only (4X6 booklet default) into (postscript) file ? And other settings is remain same?
I don't see "highresoutlines" as an option in my advanced tab.... When things aren't exactly like what I have on my screen, I usually throw an internal fit and completely give up.

Ive made a book using the book option in indesign. Now i cant see this the preview using print booklet. I tried to merge the separate documents into 1 document but this messes up everything. It leaves me with 2 layouts and im able to merg them into one layout. I think it has something to do with shuffle page spreads in document settings. Do you know a better solution?

You're welcome! That is a setting specific to your printer. If your printer doesn't have double sided printing then you won't see this option. I was making in house booklets on a copy machine so that is where this came in handy most!
Aww... then I'm glad she told you to create a small thumbnail mock-up booklet to help you see where you at all times with your book project if you have to. This hot tip method alone is how we rolled in College in 1979. Please tell us how you're doing with your Book Printing these days! Bet you don't need that "miniature pencilled mock-up" anymore.

You need to work with the settings in your printer. It's usually a matter of picking the right binding option in the printer settings. Look for an option to choose your binding and test print for each one to find the one that prints correctly.

While printing I’ve found the front and back page print fine side by side. But for some reason print both sides is greyed out and not an option. And all subsequent pages although sis by side are orientated portrait and therefore heavily cropped. Printing on a xerox docucolour
+Mike You need to export the preset from InDesign and import it into Distiller. In InDesign go to File -> Adobe PDF Presets -> Define then click the preset you want to export. Click Save As, give it a name and save it somewhere on your computer. To bring it into Distiller go to Settings ->Add Adobe PDF Settings and navigate to your preset and click Open. It should bring the preset as the selected option under Default Settings and you should see it as part of your drop down. Note Distiller calls presets settings. You may also need to edit these settings to fit your page size because Distiller works a bit differently when saving out your PDF compared to InDesign.

My document is A5 (5.8268 x 8.2677 in.); booklet 32 pages. Always the output is small, only about 66% of the letter size. Would appreciate if you could help me. Rod Bongat

The only problem is that you didn't actually show how to print the booklet, only how to make a PDF. When I print, it only prints one-sided.

8 years on and this video is still helping the community. Thank you for such a clear and detailed video. All went well with the project until mid-printing I ran out of ink and had to stop the printer after 121. Now when I tried to print the balance pages, choosing print/range from 121 to 282, the pagination gets completely distorted, i.e ID considers page 121 as the "cover" and wants to print the back cover behind 121. Do you have a solution for this please? Is there a way to make ID print the booklet in the same page order within a page range? Your help is appreciated.
When i pressed print it didnt make a pdf cause i dont have that setting of Printer:Adobe PDF and dont know how you get is. it immediatly printed is but not double sided

What paper size did you put on the Indesign because my said warning the booklet doesn’t fit the current paper size. Click print settings to specify a larger paper size or to scale the booklet to fit.

How do you print to your own printer? I have a booklet that's 5.5 x 8.5 so it can print 2 up on a letter page and I can't get it to print to my own printer double sided. I have tried 3 printers and they only come out single sided. Any suggestions?
When I try to "print booklet" and make the postscript file, it comes out as a pdf but it wont open properly. How do I get it so the postscript file doesn't try to open itself as a pdf but as a native ps file?

The pages were turned. It printed horizontal on a vertical page, cutting of half of the work.
Also, it did not print recto verso. What did I do wrong??

I have a booklet with horizontal letter sized pages and would like to join them with 2 up perfect bond, but I don't know how to set the printing settings for its size, because I need each page to be the full letter size page, not split in half or shrunk down to fit in the letter size alone. It's confusing that you set the first two pages as 1 and 2 and then have the rest of the pages 1, 2, etc. One thing useful to mention is that saddle-stitched books need to have pages in multiples of 4, or the pagination won't work correctly, but by numbering the first two as 1, 2 makes the numbers wonky. Better to set the pages as C1, C2 (using Layout > Numbering and Section Options), standard page numbers, then last two pages C3, C4 (using Layout > Numbering and Section Options). Then we have C1-C4 is 4 pages and the rest of your pages are 16, which is divisible by 4, so we know they're correct.

Hi, thanks for the tutorial. I have an issue with a magazine project I’m working on. This magazine is 48 pages (covers included) and its gonna be bound with staples so I need to leave a creep, so I go to print booklet and set the value. The covers are black (front and back) and when I export to PDF it makes a white line between the front and back of the covers and I don’t want that. Do you know how can I solve this? I have gain so much knowledge from this tutorial but I have a one confusion. You learnt that if you save pdf in booklet on pc then you can save (4X6 booklet default) and I will save pdf on mac I can change only (4X6 booklet default) into (postscript) file ? And other settings is remain same?

I don't see "highresoutlines" as an option in my advanced tab.... When things aren't exactly like what I have on my screen, I usually throw an internal fit and completely give up.

Adobe Acrobat Pro DC makes this so easy. You can even select a range of sheets and which face of the sheets to print!!! Brilliant

Ive made a book using the book option in indesign. Now i cant see this the preview using print booklet. I tried to merge the separate documents into 1 document but this messes up everything. It leaves me with 2 layouts and im able to merg them into one layout. I think it has something to do with shuffle page spreads in document settings. Do you know a better solution?

Need more info. When you say preview do you mean in InDesign or in the PDF?

You're welcome! That is a setting specific to your printer. If your printer doesn't have double sided printing then you won't see this option. I was making in house booklets on a copy machine so that is where this came in handy most!

Aww... then I'm glad she told you to create a small thumbnail mock-up booklet to help you see where you at all times with your book project if you have to. This hot tip method alone is how we rolled in College in 1979. Please tell us how you're doing with your Book Printing these days! Bet you don't need that "miniature pencilled mock-up" anymore.
Thank you very much for this tutorial. But I still struggle with an issue "multiple page sizes". But I have no idea why. because I use just one size of page. And in this case I can't print a booklet. You need to work with the settings in your printer. It's usually a matter of picking the right binding option in the printer settings. Look for an option to choose your binding and test print for each one to find the one that prints correctly.

While printing I’ve found the front and back page print fine side by side. But for some reason print both sides is greyed out and not an option. And all subsequent pages although sis by side are orientated portrait and therefore heavily cropped. Printing on a xerox docucolour

My PDF setting from InDesign is not available in Distiller. How do you bring the setting over to Distiller?
+Mike You need to export the preset from InDesign and import it into Distiller. In InDesign go to File -> Adobe PDF Presets -> Define then click the preset you want to export. Click Save As, give it a name and save it somewhere on your computer. To bring it into Distiller go to Settings ->Add Adobe PDF Settings and navigate to your preset and click Open. It should bring the preset as the selected option under Default Settings and you should see it as part of your drop down. Note Distiller calls presets settings. You may also need to edit these settings to fit your page size because Distiller works a bit differently when saving out your PDF compared to InDesign.
But I dont have Adobe PDF as the printer...
Hi, I’ve listened to your tutorial already about half a dozen times. Your instructions to me are very clear but when I actually print my document it won’t print the actual size. My document is A5 (5.8268 x 8.2677 in.); booklet 32 pages. Always the output is small, only about 66% of the letter size. Would appreciate if you could help me. Rod Bongat

+Bill Alexander If you are using a PC, you can print to PDF. If you are using a Mac, you'll need to create the postcript file and use Distiller to create your PDF. What happens when you try to create your postscript file?
What if you have an inside front cover and an inside back cover
