On spring plate fitment, yes upper should mate to lower. There was a gap in my '69 Fairlane because of added leaf, when I removed leaf, the two mated again. Springs on my '69 fastback have never been apart, it's plates mate.

hypothetically if someone was to swap a 4.6 engine and 5-speed transmission from a 2003 mustang gt into a 1968 lwb f100 that currently has a 3-speed auto and 360 engine.. what would you recommend they do for a driveshaft?

Thanks for the info. I have a 70 Torino convertible and am putting the 4r70w in it, so I have the slip yoke from a truck and am stuck at u joint at slip yoke and mating it to my original drive shaft. So am I supposed to measure the end cap and length of u joint? Will a drive line shop be able to mate them together?

Honestly I have seen shops do it differently a good bit. I would contact the driveshaft shop oy are using and get them to tell you how to measure the shaft. I would also look to getting into an aluminum shaft down the road as it is going to help with driveline vibrations.

I just DON'T deal with Driveshafts!! As much as I have done with Cars.... Driveshaft length and Balance, I leave it to the Pros.
In my main specialty, I couldn't stand getting Carburetors to build, that were HACKED up by the backyard warrior!! 😖😠

The measurement for mine is slightly different for each flat of the input yoke. Do I just take the average?

I would straight edge the yoke and take my measurement from the center point. Putting the tape on the yoke side of the straight edge. You don't need to be razors edge on the measure.
