I have small spaces to grow and a long list of seeds that I intend to grow each year so I love using containers when possible. It allows me to put plants in places that wouldn't naturally grow food such as a concrete pad. I have learned the techniques of intensive gardening and succession planting to make it work. Peas are one of my favorite veg to grow and I eat them all before they get into the house. So I have to plant them as early as possible to get the full crop before I have to remove them to make room for the heat loving veg. Timing is the trick for me. Great video. 2 thumbs up for keeping it simple and to the point. Thanks for all your hard work.

The shoots are quite delicious AND a delicacy. We sautee it with some garlic. It is available in NJ where I live in Asian grocery stores, $9-10/lb. Not cheap at all. AND I have not been able to grow peas for the last 3 years AT ALL, just died, wilted, diseased... etc. But WILL GROW IN 2024 spring for sure. Both in ground AND in containers (this vid. was amazing).
Those are very nice peas and you've given me an idea. Next week, I'll take the buckets I grew some tomatoes in last year and grow peas up the tomato cages. I've also had success planting tomatoes in areas where the peas are established. When the peas die back they feed to tomatoes. I've re-ordered most of my tomato varieties and few different ones to try. The cherry tomatoes I started a few days after I started the first batch are healthy, so I know it's not in the starting soil or my grow area. The seed company has been contacted, but I haven't heard anything from them. I really hated throwing out seeds from varieties I've been selectively saving from for years.
That sounds like a pretty good plan for the peas, Rose! I sure hope you at the very least get your money back on those seeds. Glad to hear that the cherry tomatoes don't show any signs of it. Good luck with the new seeds when you get them! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!
Great content. Sugar snap peas are the ultimate snacking pea, and you can just have a bunch of bushes in your garden to eat while you're out there working.
Jim, I've never grown peas in containers, but I love that idea. Last spring, I purchased a bunch of 15-gallon size grow-bags (they were cheaper by the dozen), lol. I have a bunch of them that I didn't use last season, so I'm all set for this coming spring to grow peas. I can't believe that this didn't occur to me. Thanks for this idea! I can't wait to grow my peas this spring. I haven't grown them in a few years, because my first attempt at growing them as a novice gardener didn't go well, and it soured on me trying again for a while (I had tried growing them in June in Utah. Obviously, it didn't work out, but now I know better.). I'm planning on growing them at the very edge of my raised garden bed, as well as in some grow bags next to the bed, trellising them together and maximizing my small space.
Sounds like you have a good plan for them now, Keira. Planting them too late is something I'm sure lots of folks have done. Good luck with your growing season!
thanks for this straightforward look at container growing for peas!! i'm growing peas for the first time this year, and i wasn't sure how many plants i could grow in one container, so it's good to know that i can crowd them a bit without worry. also helpful to see they appreciate a bit of support! (i made the mistake of starting my peas in a tray, not realizing how quickly they would grow, and now i need to transplant them as soon as possible before their roots are completely out of control... i will definitely be sowing them directly into their final container next year!)

Those are some pretty pea plants. I grow mine on a large tomato cage. My first crop died, too hot. Second crop is now producing, finally. We made it back into the 80s after our little cold spell. Going to start my seeds this weekend. I never got any shishito peppers. I'll try again. I found 7 very early swallowtail caterpillars the other day. I'm not ready for them this early, they usually don't arrive until early May. Have a great weekend.🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

Snap peas are my favorite garden snack. Been eating from my potted plants for about a month now zone 9b. Then I plant bush beans in the same pots when the peas slow down. I haven't been successful in the fall planting though.

I'm planting sugar snap peas again for the 3rd time in a container. My first try was a total flop. I planted them last fall again and they were beautiful plants, but never flowered at all. They froze. So I'm planting them again tomorrow. I've heard the 3rd time is a charm. We will see.
I am just starting my first pee plant in a container, they are also inside right next to an open window with lodes of sun. Been about 5 ,6 days. And it's growing great

Great timing! It is time to start peas here in zone 7a any time now. Since one of my gardens is being reconfigured and I haven't finished that work yet, so using some 5 gallon containers I have lying around makes perfect sense. They'll be freed up about the time I'd need them for something else. Last year is the first time I got a meaningful pea harvest, with a range of sizes from 6" (Tom Thumb, super early) through 5' tall. This year I'm trying a couple of snap peas for the first time. Do you like to soak the peas or use inoculant before planting? I've tried both the last 2 years, but don't have enough data points for any firm conclusions.
I ended up shortening some old tomato cages that fit perfectly in the pots with peas. I ended up planting 4 types of peas in pots, 3 of the 4 came up beautifully and are now about a foot tall, the 4th did not germinate at all. I also planted 4 types of peas in-ground in the other garden a few days later, they are all up too; one of those are just inside a 4' fence, the other 3 I added low wire fences for them to grow on. I should come up with a good temporary wire trellis I can put in a 1' x 3' bed for next year...

I’ve never grown peas before, but I have grown sweet pea flowers and they’re very similar so I just grew them all together this year one row of sweet peas in between a row of peas. I don’t know how they’ll do, but we’ll see.
We're looking at putting a mini greenhouse as part of our goat/sheep/chicken shed so I have been thinking about trying peas in it once it is done! I did peas in the ground once and while they were super tasty, I hated how much garden space they took up ...
I like the mini greenhouse idea! I know what you mean about using garden space of them. Even though they are early, they use up space that would give other crops an earlier start. That's one reason I went with a container for these.
Well, I don't have a video on how I do it, but it's mainly because I start them about 6 weeks before I want to plan them. They are mostly under indoor lighting until it is time to harden them off.

Hi! We're currently growing the sugar ann dwarf peas (2 plants) indoors and so far so good. It's staying nice and compact, but we also bought another supposedly dwarf variety (Dwarf Gray Sugar Pod Snap Pea) & those two are growing very well but don't seem to be much of a dwarf at all, they're taking over the space in front of them, fortunately we can afford to let them just go crazy where they're spilling over LOL
@@MidwestGardener I think I mentioned to you a while back that last winter we grew magnolia blossom sugar snap tendril peas indoors over the winter to have enough seed to sow in spring and while it worked, the plants were covered with powdery mildew. This year we don't have a humidifier in the same room as the peas and that seems to have kept the powdery mildew away, thankfully.

Well, Texas is a big place. It goes from zone 6a to 9b, and there is a big difference in those zones. I plant okra after the danger of frost has past. You can plant peas several weeks before the last frost date.
I grew snap pea plants from packets of peas I bought. They are not doing well. I don't know if it's because I planted them too late (I had to wait till the raised beds were built.) I transferred them from little grow trays where they'd sat for at least a month, in mid-June. I'm in zone 5 in the U.S. I hope I do better next year. Thanks for posting your video.... maybe I just have a brown thumb.
I'm not sure what the temps are where you are, but peas don't like the heat. It would be way too late for them to do well here. My guess is that you might have planted just a little too late.

Hi there, we're a pea breeding company and I'm just wondering which type of peas do you prefer to put in a pot and do you have a certain vine type that you prefer? Thank you!
For our area to grow in a pot, I prefer Sugar Ann for a snap pea. I prefer Lillian's Caseload for a shelling pea, and Snowbird for a snow pea. There are other good ones out there though. I like types that require little to no support and don't grow very tall.
This fall is my first attempt to grow Thomas Laxton peas. My plants are over 18” tall but so far no blooms have formed yet. Does it take a while for the blooms to form?

I'm not sure exactly how far their roots reach. I can measure a few grow bags and containers I've grown them in if you want. I grew them in 10 gallon grow bags this year.
@@0xeb- I was mistaken. This year, I grew them in 7 gallon grow bags, that are about 12 inches deep by about 13 inches wide. The other container was 12 inches deep by about 14 inches wide.
I've done peas in a container for the last two years but both years they turn brown and stringy at the base they don't seem happy and healthy and I am not sure what I am doing wrong.

I don't soak the peas before I plant or use inoculant. I just make sure to not let the soil dry completely till they sprout.
I ended up shortening some old tomato cages that fit perfectly in the pots with peas. I ended up planting 4 types of peas in pots, 3 of the 4 came up beautifully and are now about a foot tall, the 4th did not germinate at all. I also planted 4 types of peas in-ground in the other garden a few days later, they are all up too; one of those are just inside a 4' fence, the other 3 I added low wire fences for them to grow on. I should come up with a good temporary wire trellis I can put in a 1' x 3' bed for next year...

Great info. Peas are one of our arch nemesis grows over here. Horrible results. We are most likely skipping them this year but alot of good info in this video to help out next time. Our planting and timing were way off. Thanks for the share!

I’ve never grown peas before, but I have grown sweet pea flowers and they’re very similar so I just grew them all together this year one row of sweet peas in between a row of peas. I don’t know how they’ll do, but we’ll see.

We're looking at putting a mini greenhouse as part of our goat/sheep/chicken shed so I have been thinking about trying peas in it once it is done! I did peas in the ground once and while they were super tasty, I hated how much garden space they took up ...
I like the mini greenhouse idea! I know what you mean about using garden space of them. Even though they are early, they use up space that would give other crops an earlier start. That's one reason I went with a container for these.

Well, I don't have a video on how I do it, but it's mainly because I start them about 6 weeks before I want to plan them. They are mostly under indoor lighting until it is time to harden them off.

Hi! We're currently growing the sugar ann dwarf peas (2 plants) indoors and so far so good. It's staying nice and compact, but we also bought another supposedly dwarf variety (Dwarf Gray Sugar Pod Snap Pea) & those two are growing very well but don't seem to be much of a dwarf at all, they're taking over the space in front of them, fortunately we can afford to let them just go crazy where they're spilling over LOL
Sounds like they are doing pretty well for you. You must be doing something right!
@@MidwestGardener I think I mentioned to you a while back that last winter we grew magnolia blossom sugar snap tendril peas indoors over the winter to have enough seed to sow in spring and while it worked, the plants were covered with powdery mildew. This year we don't have a humidifier in the same room as the peas and that seems to have kept the powdery mildew away, thankfully.

Well, Texas is a big place. It goes from zone 6a to 9b, and there is a big difference in those zones. I plant okra after the danger of frost has past. You can plant peas several weeks before the last frost date.

I grew snap pea plants from packets of peas I bought. They are not doing well. I don't know if it's because I planted them too late (I had to wait till the raised beds were built.) I transferred them from little grow trays where they'd sat for at least a month, in mid-June. I'm in zone 5 in the U.S. I hope I do better next year. Thanks for posting your video.... maybe I just have a brown thumb.
I'm not sure what the temps are where you are, but peas don't like the heat. It would be way too late for them to do well here. My guess is that you might have planted just a little too late.

Hi there, we're a pea breeding company and I'm just wondering which type of peas do you prefer to put in a pot and do you have a certain vine type that you prefer?

For our area to grow in a pot, I prefer Sugar Ann for a snap pea. I prefer Lillian's Caseload for a shelling pea, and Snowbird for a snow pea. There are other good ones out there though. I like types that require little to no support and don't grow very tall.

This fall is my first attempt to grow Thomas Laxton peas. My plants are over 18” tall but so far no blooms have formed yet.

Well, if they haven't started to form yet, I would think they should soon. Everything grows slower in the fall though.
Do you think vine veggies like peas or cucumbers would grow in a PVC pipe with lg. holes in it?
I can't really say for sure. I've never tried it.

How deep does the container have to be for peas? The container I have is only 5" deep So I'm kind of worried, The container itself is 12"
That isn't very deep. I've never tried it, so I can't say if that would work. There is only one way to find out....give it a try.

I have a ten litre pot, is it okay to add about 25 peas if they have an each apart?
I think that might be crowding a little bit. I only plant about 10 peas in a grow bag that is about 38 liters.

I'm not sure exactly how far their roots reach. I can measure a few grow bags and containers I've grown them in if you want. I grew them in 10 gallon grow bags this year.

@@0xeb- I was mistaken. This year, I grew them in 7 gallon grow bags, that are about 12 inches deep by about 13 inches wide. The other container was 12 inches deep by about 14 inches wide.

I've done peas in a container for the last two years but both years they turn brown and stringy at the base they don't seem happy and healthy and I am not sure what I am doing wrong.
I'm not sure either. Maybe they need to be harvested a little sooner.
