- With its tiny wings and fur-like feathers, the North Island brown kiwi looks more like a mammal. Scientists at the Smithsonian Conservation and Biology Institute in Virginia are studying this odd bird-considered vulnerable in the wild-to improve zoo habitat and better care for kiwi chicks and adults.

The country is never called Kiwi, the people are sometimes called Kiwis, but that too comes from the bird due to their soldiers in WWI having it on their uniforms. The name came from the bird first.

@@-rainbow-7921 definitely not extinct. We have them virtually in our back yard. Unfortunately we also have stoats, feral cats, wild pigs and sometimes uncontrolled pet dogs.
They are so cute! I love when they are safe, warm, and protected.
im from New Zealand. the only place you can see these in the wild is on a few islands off the mainland were they have eradicated pest's (rats/stoats/feral cats and possums) otherwise they are all in zoo's. they are nocturnal so you never see them during the day (this one is telling you to fark off cause it wants to sleep) they have poor eyesight and use the large whiskers to forage for food. definitely not extinct but on their way. Small Brown kiwi is a lot more rare which is why you never find them outside of NZ

SerreNameless I was discussing a citizenship ceremony with a friend and at his ceremony was a New Zealand guy with a large fur coat (don't know why). I joked and said it must have taken thousands of kiwis to make it. And having never seen a kiwi, hear I am.

Such a beautiful animal. Saw one IRL when visiting a zoo in New Zealand. Though I was annoyed by all the stupid people there. It was a darkened room with many signs encouraging us NOT to use the camera flash, yet pretty much everyone else except me and my friend did.

They're pretty far from extinct. There are 4 species of Kiwi, with 3 being considered "vulnerable" and the 4th being "near threatened". They're well protected by the New Zealand and, barring some truly colossal catastrophe, won't be going extinct within any of our lifetimes.

@@remremkyuun They don't have a breastbone so they're really easy to kill. Dogs are responsible for 80% of kiwi deaths, and have caused their lifespan to shorten from 45-60 years to only 15.
It was so scared when it was in the bin. They cornered it with the camera, at one point you can see it kick at the camera. :/

Lordzionleader, the Maori did bring rats (the Pacific rat) and a dog species Kuri with them when they came to New Zealand, the dog species is now extinct. The Maori also started the first agricultural farming in NZ which did include burning habitat. This is not a "blame game" but factual information. There is not a single human race on this planet who unintentional have wreck havoc in their environments. It is true that when the Pakeha arrived the import of mammal species great accelerated and of course the decline of native species increased to the loss of all. The Maori did hunt into extinction the different species of Moas. We all the responsibility of saving what we can now.
