There is something i noticed, as it gets darker the Nugget doesnt change shade, it just stays as golden as ever, i think the darker it gets, the less focused on your surroundings you are and you start only wanting the thing that you are addicted to.
I have watched this many times. Sometimes I cry. My wife lost her battle with addiction Oct back in '13, and I have been Sober for almost seven years. Sad, recovering, hurt, but Sober. This video hit the nail on the head without saying one word. Very bittersweet, and very well done.
Sorry for your loss, but proud of your strength. Lost my brother to meth 5 years ago next week. He was 39. Left two kids behind. It never leaves you, but you always carry them in your soul. He posted this video a while before he passed. So hard.
I think it's really interesting how throughout the video, the 'nuggets' start to look brighter and more appealing as the world gets darker. Idk it was just a really good bit of visual storytelling
Actually, they are the exact same color, they just look brighter by contrast, which can be part of the storytelling that when you are in the dark, the more apealling they will look
I like how at the end they don’t actually slurp up the nugget. It’s sort of a “It’s your choice. Do you want to continue this cycle or get better?” Kind of thing.
I dont know why but this touches me more than any other documentary or anti-drug commercial. This thing seems so innocent, so helpless in the addiction. Even though it's a cartoon I feel genuinely sorry for that thing and just wish for a good ending. Amazing piece of work.
Thats the reason why the Kiwi didnt die at the end. He just looked at the nugget. This is the time where most people either get clean and live sober lives or take that last hit and die. Ending is yours to create.
Essentially the high is something so high that normal life can’t realistically replicate it, hence why they are dangerous to someone seeking a fulfilling life
The fact that the “high” keeps wearing off faster and faster as his desperation for it increased is just devastatingly sad.. Not to mention how dark and terrible conditions become for them as time goes on.... :((
Or we are just controlled by our needs, and we want more and more satisfaction, but when you realize that the satisfaction doesn't feel as good as before, you're between hammer and anvil, and not realizing that the prize isn't worth it anymore.
I had struggled with my heroine addiction for over ten years, and I had gotten to that really dark place in my life, to see that visually on screen has me remembering all those things I had to go through to get out of it, which was the best thing I have done for me, I am proud that I am and have been clean for the last 23 years! Stay strong, you too can make it out!
Amazing too read something like this! I was addicted too speed and almost died because I took too much one day, ended up in the hospital but I didn't stopped after this... I weight about 45kg... but at one day I said stop I don't know why but now I'm sober since 2019
Exactly. You can get addicted to other things besides drugs, and you can also responsibly consume drugs without being addicted. Honestly, addiction is just a human vice we’ll always deal with.
I genuinely think this short is the reason why I've never done drugs. I stumbled upon it the year it came out, nine years ago, and kept watching it over and over again at night - I was 13. People my age were starting to mess around with those and until today I always declined. I'm glad I did, I'm glad this short exists and that it came out at the right time for me.
I think the story goes like this: Nugget 1: The Kiwi passes by, doesn't think too much. Nugget 2: The Kiwi gets curious and tries it: it feels delightful. The Kiwi is a bird, but can't fly: so with the nugget it can. First time is easy, nothing really happens. Nugget 3: Now the Kiwi continues its journey on the ground, until it finds another nugget. It wants to fly again like any other bird does. But this time at the end something doesn't seem right. But the Kiwi just ignores the change and goes on. Nugget 4: Now the poor Kiwi gets really addicted to flying and desperately sprints to the next nugget. Same thing as nugget 3, but with a bigger change. And it even hurts itself. But again it just ignores the change and goes on. Nugget 5: Now you can see physical damage on the bird. Same thing with the next few nuggets: more and more damage and less and less flying, until it gets kinda depressed. On the second last nugget, there is almost no effect and everything turns black, which I don't exactly now the meaning of, but I think, that it should show the damage done to the Kiwi. On the last nugget it just stands there, thinking what it has done to itself, but it might be too late to return back to its normal life. That is the cycle of addicton!
The more you do something the less fun it becomes, same with addiction. The more you take something the less positive effects it will have on you, therefore the second to last nugget had little to no affect.
The more you abuse a substance or addictive activity, the less of a high it gives you and you just end up doing it because you've grown dependant on it rather than doing it for "fun"
The second to last one showed how the Kiwi built tolerance to the nugget. Would need a higher dosage to feel a similar affect as the previous trips. And that's where fentanyl comes in. Many people's last stop.
I love how this animation teach us about addiction without saying a single word. A wingless bird who only dreams to fly, until they lose the only important ability they have, which is being able to walk.
It's pretty neat how they portray drugs & becoming addicted. Your first time feels amazing & lasts for a while. The more you have, the less of that same effect you'll have. Which means, they either slowly kill themselves trying to get that high again, or they start on something stronger.
I like how at the end he was still moving, despite how hard it had got. He never stopped. To anyone struggling with addiction out there, Youve got this i beleive in you.
Как раз он двигался чтобы получить больше капель и ему надо было просто остановится или идти дальше и получать удовольствие как раньше просто от того что он ходит ну или выпить каплю но только через какое то время может быть в конце он как раз об этом и подумал
I had a friend show me this to explain how he felt about his addiction. I've always cried watching this, but its even harder now... It's been almost a year since he passed and I still don't know how to cope with it:/
:( rlly sad. I think a lot of people know someone who has problems with drugs... and not always ends well. I hope he is in a better place now and also that you will know how cope with it. 💔❤️
@@dominicspagnol8765 Please elaborate, if you have another interpretation of the video then help us realize by explaining. Unless you have no alternative/supplemental explanation and are simply attempting to appear 'deep'.
Listen to the crickets in the background. Its like they represent his awareness of the real world the way they go silent when he consumes and get quieter each time he comes back down.
The first time tends to be experimental. The second time, you do it because you want to feel the effects so you gladly go into it knowing you will feel good. Knowing how it already felt from the first time, you embrace the second with ease, therefore allowing the 'high' to be much stronger than the first because you sought after it. But the little bump at the end is the dreaded come down or hangover kicking in. The come down or hangover gets worse as the addiction carries on✌🏻
@Himesh Komalram why? They did the same also in mine school... I live in Italy, so maby it's an unusual thing for you because you're from another country...
I started cry, too. Espessially at the end. I tell myself that he's looking at it, not wanting to take it because he KNOWS it's not going to give him what he wants, but knows that he can't walk by it because there's nothing left that he wants beside it - he still "needs" it. This has been my most of my life. thank God I'm not stuck in that anymore... seriously, thank God.

_I've rewatched this one lots, and my new favorite part is the beginning:_ When he first is walking and just sort of witnesses the nugget without engaging in it. Then he first "tries it", and the nugget initially doesn't do anything. But it's interesting enough to try again. Then the second time it does something new. And it isn't until the third try that he's like "oh THIS is how it was SUPPOSED to feel...." Incredibly good short. So well-made, so deeply evocative and right to the point.
Stages of Addictions in this greatly animated short: First Nugget: Squipply (what I named the bird) recognizes what the object of addiction. Question arise in his head. Second Nugget: Remembering his questions upon the first nugget, Squipply decides to try out this strange thing, and receives his first high, arguably the best. Mainly due to the fact you don't know what will happen. Squipply is still innocent, just curious. Third Nugget: "Oh, it's you again!" Squipply probably says, and remembers his first high with the object of addiction and wants to re-create the feeling of the first, best high. His mind now realizing the feeling can get the most out of the experience. However, after this experience, he gets his first "crash", in which case he feels the ill effects of this object of addiction (now calling a drug, as it's simpler and more likely to be... I know it isn't 100% a drug) Innocence is shaving away, but still there. Fourth Nugget: Looking forward to his next encounter with the drug, Squipply sees it in his future and seizes the moment, getting to the drug as fast as possible. He can live without the drug, but it'll be hard. This is the first sign of an addiction. Not many outside signs, but many mental or internal signs might be showing. The high is normal, but less effective. The crash is more prevalent now, and here on, physical signs of the addiction to the drug can be shown here and after this point. Squipply realizes this, but ignores it as much as he can. Innocence is minimal. Fifth Nugget: Like before, Squipply gets to the drug as fast as he can, even if he can't see it. He knows he'll find it if he keeps looking hard enough. The high is just a high, and the crash shows more signs of addiction. Unsurprisingly, he ignores it and gazes at his next dose right after his crash. Squipply is now in the addicted community to this drug. Getting out isn't easy, if possible without medical help. Innocence is barely present if not gone. Sixth Nugget: Like stated before, Squipply landed right into his next dose, readies himself, and indulges. The highs are now starting to lose effect, and are now just a part of his life. Getting out now is pretty much impossible without extreme measures. The crashes are getting more and more devastating to himself physically, mentally, and spiritually. There is no innocence left in Squipply, he has gone too deep for that, and probably understands that. Seventh Nugget: Squipply now finds himself neck deep into this drug, and probably knows he won't leave. Chances are he won't, so he indulges again. The high, barely existent, but still necessary if Squipply doesn't want to undergo withdraws, which he might have faced before, but are now more and more frequent if not constant unless under the effects of the drug. The crash is the first that could be life threatening for more simple drugs, like foods, and people aren't going to help him. Squipply now lives in a community of people like him. Addicts. Getting out now is a possibility of about 2%. Innocence is replaced with shame. Squipply probably sees himself from the eyes of others and realizes that he is a wreck, but can't stop. Nobody is helping him. He has succumbed to the addiction. Eighth Nugget: The recovery from the last encounter was rough, taking some time. He doesn't run to his next dose, in fact, Squipply probably tries to kick the habit after realizing what it's doing to him. Results, however, are futile. He returns to the drug. If there is a high, it lasts only a few moments, and the crashes are getting exponentially worse. He knows what he has become, and most likely wants someone to give him a hand up. Chances like those, however, are very rare, and you have to be a very lucky Squipply to get help now, either from family, friends, or organizations. Squipply is now infinitely scarred, thus connected, to this drug. It will be a factor for the rest of his life. He is now most likely totally surrounded by people with his same addiction, thus no more judgment, only addiction. Ninth Nugget: If he hasn't died yet, Squipply's gonna go soon. The addiction has gotten so bad, that recovery isn't an option. Chances of over-dosing are extremely high, as Squipply wants to experience his first high again, but won't. Squipply is probably depressed and lost. He's confused with how he's gotten this far, and wants dearly to stop. There is no chance for him, however, he has become the addiction. Poor Squipply. Those who are saved now certainly have stories to tell, and will want to go back to the drug in hopes of a second-first high or wanting to end the withdraws. Fate decides what happens to Squipply now. This is the end of the short, but not the story. Tenth Nugget: The last nugget. This is it. If Squipply isn't kicking the addiction by a thread, he's dead. Poor Squipply has finally succumbed to the addiction with his life. There is no high, and there is no crash. His physical state is critical, his mental state unstable, and his spiritual state is caged away via the addiction. Moments before the final dose, he thinks about his life, and sorta knows this is it. "One last high is all I want, and then I wanna go home," says Squipply. He indulges... Poor Squipply... poor Squipply. Addiction is a serious thing, and this vid is a serious, yet simple but entertaining way to look at it. It makes sense to anybody, even the twelve year old me who saw this when it came out (or around 2014). If someone you know is battling an addiction, or needs to get out, get them help. Whether it be fast food, smoking, drinking, or meth, try to help them. If you are in an addiction, escape while you still can. Future, living you will thank you. This got deep real quick... whoops. Seriously though, addictions are cereal, so take them cereal! Edit: Wow... I mean it took like 45 minutes to compose and get things right... but thanks for the likes and thanks! Hooray for Squipply, may he hold close and dear to your hearts! Wow. I didn't expect a little personal blurb on something to blow up so much, but wow. I've loved writing, and I feel like this is a little example of what I like doing. I didn't expect this to get as much traction as it did, and 2 years later, I'm surprised this is even still here! I'm in college now, and I can say this is almost nostalgic in a way! I remember learning about the "white rabbit", the consequences of addiction, and how downward things can go. It was an interesting little blurb I wrote, and it was done out of complete boredom... who knew! In short, thanks! This makes my heart happy to see people like what I've made, and I'll try to scour the internet for more things to write! And yes, I know his name is Kiwi. Squipply just sounds goofy to lighten the mood!
The way it shows the high growing shorter and shorter just hurts... Currently 103 days without even looking at 🌽, and believe me its like a breath of fresh air...
My sister died of a fentanyl overdose two years ago yesterday. This video is chillingly accurate. It hurts my heart seeing the bird at the end, knowing that at the end of my sisters life, every moment was so unbearably heavy and dark. I hope one day we can change our pre conceived notions on addiction and what it does to you, it is a disease that no one should ever have to experience,
It's so potent.. My little 12-year-old almost died by picking up a coin with fentanyl-laced on its surface. Luckily, his favorite park was near a hospital.
Watching my 22 year old son live with active addiction and on and off recovery since 16 I can tell you that this is 99% accurate. Just missing the final scene - death by overdose or suicide. I've received the "good-bye Dad, I love you but I am going to kill myself tonight" text more times than a father should. (fortunately he always passed out before completing the act). My heart breaks for those enslaved to addiction and those who love them.
@@ОммнриГрошшо That is 1st of all super rude. 2ndly The father is just warning everyone about the dangers of addiction and how it effected them. IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING GOOD TO SAY DONT SAY IT!!!
@@ОммнриГрошшо being ignorant to that the fact that “pain killers” given by hospital and doctors can be addicting and are given out very easily. Also you don’t know the full story so please don’t judge
I love this. There are so many little details, one could be analyzing it for hours. One of my favorites is how after the comedown of the first try, it keeps "looking back" at the high, until it stumbles upon the next dose
I like they used a kiwi bird for this animation, a species of bird that can’t fly. They show the kiwi flying when it gets high on the drug, making it feel good. But it also shows a disadvantage the kiwi has because it can’t actually fly, which is landing safely and recovering from flying. The kiwi knows that it’s damaging itself but can’t shake off how good it felt to fly. Therefore, it keeps to its addiction. This was so cleverly made.
It perfectly catches the addiction experience on so many levels. The pure, unadulterated bliss of the first time. The "hehe, I know what this is and how it makes me feel". The high that gets shorter and less blissful every time, until it is only a short, faded echo of what once has been. The ever harsher landings. The arc from "Guess I don't need to wait for the next opportunity when I can look for it" to an insatiable craving. The deterioating health. The world that gets darker every time until it is just you and the drug. I like the open ending. Your world is almost entirely black now. And the only sun is the next nugget. You're at rock bottom. Will you...find the strengh to say no?
@@agupta9097 Wish you every bit of strengh you need and help from God too. Others have escaped from this cruel circle that is no longer even rewarding, and you can too.

I watched this in school a couple days ago. Every year, we watch this video at our elementary school. We learned that we shouldn't play a lot of video games and be addicted to that stuff. But this scares me and makes me cry and I can't sleep some nights
The kiwi decided not to eat that last nugget. He understood it would not make him feel better. He walked past, and started to feel a tad brighter. Then, he walked past another one. And another one. Eventually, he didn't even notice them anymore, for he knew they were not what he was looking for. He returned to full health, and was a wiser kiwi. The end
Or he ignored the last one because the magic had gone. But once the withdrawals ended and the world got bright again, he forgot just how bad that darkness was, and now his tolerance is low again, the high has come back. So the cycle starts all over again
The thing I didn't notice as a kid watching this video is that the kiwi is alone. Addiction is not a coincidence: it happens to isolated people who have no other form of support or camaraderie.
I never thought a simple animation could make me cry. Watch this was like watching my childhood best friend slowly dying all over again. Addiction is not a joke. RIP to everyone who lost this battle ❤️
This video sent me on a better path about 4 or 5 years ago. It’s beautiful and tragic all at the same time. I’m now embarking on a 12 steps recovery program and have found a community who are unbelievably supportive. Thank you for changing everything. for me and my friend too. you really made a difference for us and I’m super grateful x
Im a rehabilitating addict.. my psychologist gave me this link.. Funny how the guy who wrote this nailed it.. It's exactly the way it looks.. and feels..
Ok is a big word, i've been in a detox clinic for a month and i'm in my post-detox treatment now. Addiction doesn't stop when the body is clean of substances.. that's when the fight against the addiction starts. It's a long process.. at the moment i have 2 group meetings per week, one face to face therapy session of 2 hours, and one phone session. Once you are addicted, you will remain addicted for the rest of your life, so i will never really get 'cured', it will only become manageable. The emotions and traumas i've been blocking with substance abuse are now all coming out, and i'll have to deal with that by dealing with that, instead of running back to substances which in the end will only lead to the same outcome for everyone.. Clinics, prisons, and death.. In a week i'm hoping to recieve my 30 day clean badge (i had a screwup after the clinic) from the NA (Narcotics Anonymous).. So it's a struggle, but a struggle that's worth it, the other options, simply aren't an option.
I'm crying. I was once addicted to meth and this just hit home so hard. It feels so innocent and benevolent at first and just takes everything from you. All your joy.
@@cooperrichardson-p9r Yeah, when you first try for a bit you think you will leave it. But when you less wait it, the addiction gets bigger and bigger and you cannot stop it. This count to: drugs, phone, medicine, alcohol, sex, m4sturbtion, and more.
Exactly addiction is not based on drugs alone but anything that can take hold of a person, and said perso, looses sight of life and its importance looses focus and can end up gravly ill or dead.
Amazing how the addiction progress even though it was killing him, physically. This is the best illustration of addiction I have seen. The thought, "Just STOP" will no longer come out of my mouth.
funny because the video makes you want to scream "just stop" At what point do you see that you're getting less out of it each time. At what point do you see it's harming you more with each use? At what point should you realize on your own that you have to stop. Reality is addicts needs help to stop, sure. But they have to want that help. They have to seek it out. They have to just make the choice to go seek out help.
@@Darthquackiusthey know what it’s doing to them every single time. They know they’re getting less out of it and that it’s hurting them. They just do it anyways.
at first i thought it was a funny animation but at the end i really felt it, it’s so deep. the way drugs alcool and stuff like that turn people in “things” that they’re not. I really want everyone to watch this.
Its not just drugs or alcohol, its everything that can cause addiction because of the instant reward it gives you on the first tries which you then seek to experience that same feeling just once more and you inevitably fail, its like watching a movie multiple times, you will never be able to experience it like you did on the first time again, and this simple story has so many paraleles with even the dark thoughts that many times haunt our complex minds..wathever
Recently left residential rehab, and a friend I made there dipped out of the treatment early, like 3 days after I got out. He died of an overdose not even 2 weeks later. When I got out, I was looking forward to a get together we planned for later in the year, to reconnect with all the friends we made since we came from states all across the country. Our reunion came sooner than expected, at his funeral. He was only 23. Addiction is not a choice, it is a devastating disease, and does not discriminate. This video depicts it perfectly.
Coming up on my one year sober in January, boy did i pick a hell of a year to do it lol. This video does perfectly encapsulate what an addiction looks like. It doesn't even need to be drugs or alcohol.
This just isn’t about drugs, it’s about any kind of addiction, for example addiction to gambling or sex or anything can also have the same effect and destroy a person’s life.
1 object, 1 area, 1 character. This animation is able to tell us so much with just 3 subjects in a video. I love how everything turns dark except for the nuggets at some point. Symbolising the fact that at this point it’s the only light in the bird’s life. There is too much to love tho, imma send this to myself 4 years ago
@@Selicular but in fact it shows case when you have none except the nuggets. It's a personal decision: go in empty void to nowhere and not try anything new or try and be ashamed for it. In other words, key solution is depression. Once it strikes you will carry on. Depressed, slow but forth and forth. It's only personal decision. So one around is involved. /sarcasm
I saw this video once on the nofap Reddit community. I struggled for 10 years with a porn addiction, and even now 1 year+ on into my recovery… it’s still so tough. It’s that conscious decision you have to make to ignore the nuggets that is one of the hardest things to do once you’ve been addicted. I still mess up sometimes, and touch the nugget like the bird did at the start which really doesn’t help. I like this video because it’s so dark but it really tells the truth in how addiction makes you feel.
I wish you strength and I send it to you for the moments when with all willpower the endless duration of temptation seems so overpowering. As with the process of sliding into it there exists a way out, but it‘s a slippery slope backwards unfortunately. It does get better with every single time we manage the „no“, even if the steps feels infinitesimal small. Be kind and friendly with yourself, forgive and try again if you stumble. Best wishes to you!
My interpretation of the video is that it's about drugs as when he first does it he is curious then tries it again until eventually he's looking forward to it as he is shown running but each time he takes it it hurts his body more and more just like how drugs will hurt ur health, money, family etc. Until eventually he and his life is so dark that he needs the drugs then he gets weak till the drugs don't help anymore and continues to take more and more
fiend 21 You have a great analysis, but it goes beyond just drugs. Addiction can take many forms, whether it is TV, junk food, video games, internet, gambling, shopping etcetc. The effect of drugs are just extremely strong as they directly change the chemical balance in your brain
lnopia Really, that is only before your brain is fully developed. The only ones that will still damage you are things like methamphetamines and heroine.
I love how this puts on display the very innermost core tenant of addiction, and the reason why people keep doing it even though it barely even feels good anymore: *It’s hardly the way the drug makes them feel that keeps them addicted, it’s the vain hope that someday it will once again feel as magical as the first time they did it. . .*
That's what I learned. Years ago, there was a hot batch of heroin going around the side of town I worked on that was laced with carfentanyl killed a bunch of people. I even found a lady ODed in her car in a parking lot behind work. A guy I worked with that was long into recovery told me that addicts would actually chase those hot batches trying to get their first high again, and that's why so many people died in a span of two or three days. It was crazy.
As a former orange addict, I just want to say I'm so glad this video exists; my life was almost destroyed and it's very comforting to know there are people out there who have been through the same thing I went through.
It's crazy. I saw this video when I was a young teen and remember thinking it was pretty impactful, but as time goes on I completely forgot about it. Turns out I became an alcoholic and then became an opiate addict over the years. Now I'm currently facing my opiate addiction and just randomly saw a screenshot of this in a meme and thought about it for the first time in years. I guess I could say it's even more impactful now. Instead of just having sympathy for the addict (the yellow bird) in this video like I did in the past, I now feel like the yellow bird and truly understand the struggle.
I relate so much with my heroine addiction.. We can recover thou!! I got 87 days sober and I love watching this to remind what it’s like to fall back into addiction.
It cosumes over and over, what was originally a magical experience, slowly becomes more fleeting, he hurries for the next trip, as slowly they deteriorate and find it harder to keep it going..... Eventually, everything becomes dark....all their eyes can see in the world, is the Nugget.
I really do believe this video has contributed to me staying sober and away from drugs, the animation was so perfect to depict addiction. I saw this back in High school in 2008.
The flute solos are simply beautiful. The first is a delight in its own right. The second is simultaneously beautiful and ominous, and hints that something in the beauty of the nuggets is off, but we don’t know what it is until we keep watching and realize the theme of the animation
Yes this is spot on. I know first hand about addiction and this is a very powerful and accurate description of it. I'm currently 29 months clean ( 2 years & 5 months ) now and this is exactly how my addictions went. It's all fun and games until it catches up to you and destroys everything or worse, Death. I came close to death a few times and ruined my life and everything in it and hurt myself and a lot of people. There is hope and we do recover if you want it bad enough but it's all up to YOU and YOU gotta be willing to put the work in and surrender and say enough is enough and NEVER GIVE UP FIGHTING. Thanks for sharing.
huh true. it's like they were being presented to him with the intent to make him give in and try them. though i still think the animation means to teach people why not to do that, no matter if drugs are easily accessible to you or not. because there's always going to be Something accessible, and even then, or maybe even especially if it's something "really really bad", that just tempts young people who were never taught the danger more. basically it's better to understand the reason behind why you shouldn't do something, rather than just being forbidden to do it
“Oh i dont mind that” “Hmm lemme try” “Hey i kinda like this” “I LOVE THIS” “I LOVE THIS SOMUCH I WANNA DEDICATE MY LIFE TO THIS” Sounds like me tasting scrambled eggs with potattoes
I got heavily addicted to fentanyl when I was 16, a year later inpatient rehab they played this and I completely lost it. I didn’t want to learn how addiction works because subconsciously I didn’t want to accept what I did to myself. Every second of this was gut wrenching
Hey there hope you're well, i am 75 DAYS CLEAN off fentanyl and trust me i know how hard coming off that is, so you are a champ, don't forget it 💯💯hopefully, you are still well today just wanted to put this out there cus i also recently kicked a 4 year opiate addiction and a heck of a long alcohol addiction. Take care 🤗
That’s what’s so horrid about addiction, it preys on those in bad positions to react. Anything that’s a release of stress could help someone like that. Notice how the bird is alone? He had no one to support him/ help him out. It was the only thing around that would make him happy, and it almost ruined him. What i’m saying is anyone affected by this stuff are most definitely victims of some crappy conditions, and are not to blame in this situation
I first saw this video while I was at rehab. It actually made an impact in helping me understand what is wrong with me. Knowing why I do what I do helps me understand what I need to do to prevent it from happening again. Moments ago when thinking about having a drink after 37 days sober, I watch this again to remind me that the crash comes after...every single time! And the crash gets worse...every single time! That last one will kill me... Not today!!!!
I admire your resolve. I’ve never been addicted to anything, but I’m reading all about it in college and how it works in the brain-I hope you’re proud, what you’ve done is something very difficult.
This animation has a lot of messages, did anyone notice how when it started getting addicting, it was easier to get to it, but as the addiction grew, it became harder to reach it
That's the reason people fall into addictions. At the very beginning, everything is great. THAT'S WHY YOU MUST NEVER TRY ANYTHING!! (Sorry for my bad english)
Nice insight! Not only that, but the environment and the kiwi bird's reality kept getting dimmer; but with the substance (or whatever the addiction was) it made life feel brighter (even though it wasn't the truth). Addiction makes reality seem dull, and often leads to making reality a nightmare because of who it hurts (us and those around us), and then the source of the addiction traps people in this false belief and lies that it's the addicting substance that is the enticing reality rather than life itself. I thought it was interesting how the environment got dimmer while the substance itself became brighter. A truth that, when someone goes deep enough into addiction, often times the easiest and quickest - and even only - thing that one can see is the object that is creating the addiction and the craving just keeps getting bigger and bigger, demanding more and more. It's never satisfied, which catches us, and our brains, in this troubling hellscape of a loop that is hard to break out of.
This video, 1.000.000 wise words. What my dad used to tell me, how I avoided everything, is in this video. This one should go straight to every school out there
THIS ANIMATION HAS GOT TO WIN AN AWARD! - Loved the animation - Loved the quality of the sound - Loved the cuteness of the character - Loved the different sounds and the muffled-ness in the way the environment was changing. - Loved the whole moral of the story!!!
This is not just about drugs, this is about addiction. You can be addicted to substances, people, situations, even feelings (ex: a toxic relationship, your comfort zone). And I think this is something that is incredibly important to keep in mind as well.
As a Health teacher, I LOVE this video, my only request is at the end it sees a different color (different drug) and tries that. Thanks for this, great teaching tool
I like the pause before the little bird sips because in reality when you are an addict, you know it is bad and you want to stop but feel like you can't.
There is something i noticed, as it gets darker the Nugget doesnt change shade, it just stays as golden as ever, i think the darker it gets, the less focused on your surroundings you are and you start only wanting the thing that you are addicted to.
It also shows that the world in your "normal" state is getting progressively worse.
Why do you hate people equally??

I have watched this many times. Sometimes I cry. My wife lost her battle with addiction Oct back in '13, and I have been Sober for almost seven years. Sad, recovering, hurt, but Sober. This video hit the nail on the head without saying one word. Very bittersweet, and very well done.
My love goes out to you. ❤️
I hope you are in a better place and may god rest your wife's soul.
I'm so sorry for your loss... I wish you the best.
awh im sorry to hear that. I give you nothing but love and support.
Idk it was just a really good bit of visual storytelling
they consumed all the energy and the light
Yeah
Yeah like it’s the only good thing in the birds life
Like drugs, the effect
Actually, they are the exact same color, they just look brighter by contrast, which can be part of the storytelling that when you are in the dark, the more apealling they will look
In a 5min animation you explain the feeling of an addiction better than any other person can. I cried because of how real this feels.
I cried as well. I cry every time.
It really is profoundly sad isn't it? You're right. This is exactly how it feels. It's a IYKYN thing.
I like how at the end they don’t actually slurp up the nugget. It’s sort of a “It’s your choice. Do you want to continue this cycle or get better?” Kind of thing.
Ayrissia Buckley yes, exactly. It gets harder and harder to break the cycle as time goes on, and the decision becomes more and more life threatening.
Me too. The symbolism in the animation is really clever
And then almost everyone slurps it unfortunately.
theres no recovery
yeah these kinds of ambiguous endings always leave a bigger impact to the audience because they will imagine the ending that suits them
I dont know why but this touches me more than any other documentary or anti-drug commercial.
He still have glow in his eyes, so there's still hope, but he might need to go to rehab for a while
Totally with you on that
There’s Something about this video …
Beautiful
Notice how he’s a bird without wings. First hit makes him fly. He feels like he’s meant to be that way. Represents an addictive personality very well.
Essentially the high is something so high that normal life can’t realistically replicate it, hence why they are dangerous to someone seeking a fulfilling life
Holy sh.. LITERALLY!!! It feels like "your real self"
I agree - Kiwi's can't fly - that's part of the point I think - but it doesn't mean that you can't "fly" in other areas.
He’s a kiwi, kiwis can’t fly, the nuggets give him the imagination of flying

I genuinely think this short is the reason why I've never done drugs. I stumbled upon it the year it came out, nine years ago, and kept watching it over and over again at night - I was 13. People my age were starting to mess around with those and until today I always declined. I'm glad I did, I'm glad this short exists and that it came out at the right time for me.
Drugs are bad.

Same bro, teenagers like us are getting wild and maybe that's why i don't have friend. But being lonely is better than having no future
I think the story goes like this:
Nugget 1: The Kiwi passes by, doesn't think too much.
Wow , it's almost as if I watched the video all over again , thank you!
@@sevri3700 is this sarcasam

The first time tends to be experimental. The second time, you do it because you want to feel the effects so you gladly go into it knowing you will feel good. Knowing how it already felt from the first time, you embrace the second with ease, therefore allowing the 'high' to be much stronger than the first because you sought after it. Stages of Addictions in this greatly animated short:
First Nugget: Squipply (what I named the bird) recognizes what the object of addiction.
At the end, he actually is going to eat the final nugget after that, it will end, cause that’s how it goes.
Even the more nuggets he eats, The more fat he gets

Eventually, he didn't even notice them anymore, for he knew they were not what he was looking for. He returned to full health, and was a wiser kiwi. The end
Or he ignored the last one because the magic had gone. But once the withdrawals ended and the world got bright again, he forgot just how bad that darkness was, and now his tolerance is low again, the high has come back. So the cycle starts all over again
Two predictions, one ending.

The thing I didn't notice as a kid watching this video is that the kiwi is alone. Addiction is not a coincidence: it happens to isolated people who have no other form of support or camaraderie.

Yes, I am, why wouldn't i be?
Romek Schellekens well are you ok now? ...

Amazing how the addiction progress even though it was killing him, physically. This is the best illustration of addiction I have seen. The thought, "Just STOP" will no longer come out of my mouth.

funny because the video makes you want to scream "just stop"
At what point do you see that you're getting less out of it each time. At what point do you see it's harming you more with each use? At what point should you realize on your own that you have to stop. Reality is addicts needs help to stop, sure. But they have to want that help. They have to seek it out. They have to just make the choice to go seek out help.

The only thing it's missing is the birds friends/family and showing how it slowly leaves them to chase the nugget
Wish I had seen this sooner also
It’s supposed to illustrate the fact that addicts don’t see anything, besides nuggets and reality is of nondescript matter for them.
I’m very sad now
@@Selicular but in fact it shows case when you have none except the nuggets.
This is a running sentence. I will copy this and add punctuations to make it better to understand.
lnopia Really, that is only before your brain is fully developed. The only ones that will still damage you are things like methamphetamines and heroine.
This is exactly what I thought
now thats just stupid of you to say, Your uncles Hip socket!
I love how this puts on display the very innermost core tenant of addiction, and the reason why people keep doing it even though it barely even feels good anymore: *It’s hardly the way the drug makes them feel that keeps them addicted, it’s the vain hope that someday it will once again feel as magical as the first time they did it. . .*
That and to keep the withdrawals away. Long term addicts likely take ot because otherwise it hurts their body.
went from 1 pill to handfuls at a time just to get close
That's what I learned. Years ago, there was a hot batch of heroin going around the side of town I worked on that was laced with carfentanyl killed a bunch of people. I even found a lady ODed in her car in a parking lot behind work. A guy I worked with that was long into recovery told me that addicts would actually chase those hot batches trying to get their first high again, and that's why so many people died in a span of two or three days. It was crazy.
They take just to feel normal again

Drugs. Or any addictive thing. Fantastic at first and you only need a little to get a high. But soon it just isn’t enough

This is a pretty smart example of the effects of drugs. It's pretty depressing and scary, but has truth to it, nonetheless.
Yes. sometimes people doesn't chose them but it's their environment or surroundings which let them chose them. See how the bird ignored it first time
huh true. it's like they were being presented to him with the intent to make him give in and try them. though i still think the animation means to teach people why not to do that, no matter if drugs are easily accessible to you or not. because there's always going to be Something accessible, and even then, or maybe even especially if it's something "really really bad", that just tempts young people who were never taught the danger more.
basically it's better to understand the reason behind why you shouldn't do something, rather than just being forbidden to do it

Glad you're crying out of remorse because you're fucking stupid for getting yourself into such a hot mess in the first place.
Most of us don't know what "fentanyl" is. We can only assume it's some kind of drug, right?
I first saw this video while I was at rehab. It actually made an impact in helping me understand what is wrong with me. Knowing why I do what I do helps me understand what I need to do to prevent it from happening again. @@porkulio Good day to you too
That's the reason people fall into addictions. At the very beginning, everything is great. THAT'S WHY YOU MUST NEVER TRY ANYTHING!! (Sorry for my bad english)
@@porkulioI wouldn't say that. Just be aware of a pattern or a cycle repeating itself, and it's it's harming you or somebody else.
