- Purl, directed by Kristen Lester and produced by Gillian Libbert-Duncan, features an earnest ball of yarn named Purl who gets a job in a fast-paced, high energy, bro-tastic start-up. Yarny hijinks ensue as she tries to fit in, but how far is she willing to go to get the acceptance she yearns for, and in the end, is it worth it?

I love this. It's realistic. You can't force people to accept you but you can make an effort to fit in first and slowly introduce them to the real you. It's not that the guys are evil, it's just that she is unfamiliar and people tend to stay away from unfamiliar things, so she made herself into something they are comfortable with and slowly convince them to try something new. She first earned their respect and from then on it's easier

As a female Engineer, I have been told to act more "masculine" in order to relate to my predominantly male coworkers. When more women enter Engineering, hopefully this will no longer be an issue.
When theres an unequal ratio there will alway be that "try to fit in" scenario im afraid. It happens in classrooms, and more often than not it's not because of your gender but because of the general mannerisms you give out (assertive or b.t.s.? Leader or leaded on? Talkative or quiet? When these characteristics come in mind you categorize the two as "default" characteristics of "being masculine" and "being feminine", I'm afraid.)
@@angela.luntian I agree. I have more feminine associated personality traits while most people in my work environment have had more masculine coded interests and personalities. It's important to try and get along with others, especially in a classroom or a workplace, and adopting some personality traits or interests of another group for this reason can be good (as long as these personality traits and interests are healthy and in line with your own moral standards).
The real problem comes when you are encouraged to completely change your personality in order to "fit in" or secure your job. Thankfully, this did not happen to me.
Still, as it shows in the video, this process of comforming to the majority ends up erasing the potential of experiencing the positive effects of masculinity and femininity co-operating together in the fusion of different ideas and perspectives.
Instead of only expecting new hires to conform to the workplace culture, their coworkers should also be encouraged to learn and appreciate differences.
This back and forth, sadly, does not always happen.
I'm an engineering student, and yeah - you do have to kinda 'mask'. But as someone who is a bit geeky anyway, it's easy for me. Sure I don't talk about how I love getting my nails done, and how cute cats are - but they also do the same and keep talk to a general vibe that everyone can get involved in. Maybe it's cos the students are the new younger generation of engineers were sexism isn't as big a thing?
As a former engineering student, I faced the same issue. It’s maddening how being female in a male dominated industry means being “one of the boys”. Do men feel they have to be “one of the girls” in a female dominated industry like nursing? No, so why do I have to prove myself anymore than I did to get hired in the first place?
Ay ay ay whats being female got to do with anything? We talking about balls of yarn over here 😂

If I'm getting this correctly, this short is about female representation and a general level of respect at a workplace, correct? That's pretty cool.
yes it's basically about misogynist tendency in company
Yes, the director of the short film wanted to represent how she felt in a job that was "only for men" (I think so)
The cool thing is that you can interpret it as being a female in a place full of men, or you can also interpret it as being a non white person in a place with only white people, and the nice little detail of adding a black man at the end makes it work too.
At the end it's about diversity.

“It’s not about sexism, it’s about being different.” Why not both? How can a short featuring a male dominated company called BRO and a feminine ball of yarn trying to be accepted not resemble sexism in the workplace even a little?
Because there was no sexism in the short. It's clearly about women in a male dominated workplace. Doesn't mean it's sexism.
As I watched this short film with my young teen son, his mind was blown that I too noticed what they were doing here.... smh.
Not sexism it's about fitting in. When someone different appears they dont automatically join your friend group. It's not discrimination it's about earning trust and acceptance.
