Y’all are talking about the sound design and the lack of dialogue but CAN we TALK ABOUT the fact that the taller robots expressions are conveyed so well with just a lit triangle?? These animators and character designers are brilliant
It could also be a situation similar to the Cooperative Testing Initiative from Portal 2, where the robots aren't programmed to do it initially, they just learn to do it over time, and it just so happened to be an interaction humans are familiar with in the modern age.
Some people can read War and Peace and come away thinking it's a simple adventure story. Others can read the ingredients on a chewing gum wrapper and unlock the secrets of the universe - lex luther
One's a shovel that's not the keenest robot around, the other's a hammer that's surprisingly cool and elegant for such a blunt implement. Within roughly 8 minutes, we see how deep their friendship is, their characters, and the struggle that's worn them down for an unknown amount of time. We see them comfort and reassure each other, and even risk everything to protect each other... and finally find a strange sort of freedom, now stuck together with something they're much more fond of. Probably my favorite short film of all time. Years later and I'm still watching this over and over. I like it when Pixar animates nonverbal, expressive robots, what can I say? What I'd give to see a full-length film seeing these two... Where they end up going, if they'd still be chased, if those sleek fellows living it up in those towers are any friendly.
This is wickedly cool, I love it. Robots forced to work together on a space train seek freedom together after growing to like one another. It's such a simple, yet so bizarre idea on the surface, but is executed extremely well here given the time and budget. A super powerful story

this short is so interesting. the 2 robots don't desire to live amongst the upper class, they desire autonomy. they don't seek to destroy the bourgeoisie, they seek to live out their lives beyond the reach of society. their escape was violent, yes, but only because it appeared to be the only way.
Your local shooter to really connect is to touch and feel and thus live and be alive even for robots who spend every second working. Reminder of why we work to live and not the other way around.
I have a big question about this... What are those robots at the top of those glowing spikes... like a high class of robots while a low class works hard and never gets to reach beyond limits provided by the high class?
Yeah, I think so. If you think about it, the two main robots seemed to be shovelling ore to power the train, similar to coal miners. Because they were connected to the train, they were prevented from seeing the world that the high-class robots lived in. Without the blue spheres, which the high-class robots had, they relied solely on the train (their position in society) to give them power, but it also restricted them.
Crazy how it's kinda an analysis of Disney's own greed/capitalist ideals. And it's kinda like the animators showing us that they'll always be those robots working hard so that their big bosses can contain a hefty cash flow.

I love this Shorts program. They are so creative and original. I hope this isnt just a one time thing but also a program you guys do yearly. Also, I personally prefer this short over Purl.
Definitely. I feel this short handled it's message much more elegantly. It told the story it was trying to tell, while also having an underlying message (Smash and Grab could be seen as lower class robots, or could also be seen as slaves. Either way the story fits just the same.) But Purl's story only works with Yarns representing women in the workplace, and actually falls apart if you look at the short story at face value (there's literally no reason the "Bros" would be so awkward around Lacey or even Purl if they knew Yarn people existed.) Even outside of that, both stereotypes were almost outright offensive. It just felt like good intentions with poor execution, mostly due to the dumbed down plot. It would have fit much better if they skipped the metaphors.
possibly releasing any heat thats in there and the civilization might be living things connected to robot bodies because they aren't able to go into space but thats just my thinking
I have no words.... This was your BEST short yet. I loved every second of it. Smash and Grab is now officially my new favorite Pixar short. Before, Geri's Game was my all time favorite until my eyes saw this wonderful masterpiece. This short was so good, that I even applauded for a whole minute after it ended. I love how this tells a very relatable story, with powerful emotions from the characters, and no dialogue. You deserve a good ol pat on the back. This was like WALL-E but in the far, far future. So once again, I applaud you. 👏👏👏👏👏
This was a fun watch. Felt like a blend of a lot of familiar sci-fi/fantasy stories, in a good way. The ending reminded me of C3PO and R2 on Tatooine in A New Hope. Really loved the sound design as well. But I was so NOT READY for 5:22! Thanks, Pixar!

I love this Shorts program.
They are so creative and original. I hope this isnt just a one time thing but also a program you guys do yearly.
Also, I personally prefer this short over Purl.
It doesn't even have half a million views :( It's definitely better than Purl.
Definitely. I feel this short handled it's message much more elegantly. It told the story it was trying to tell, while also having an underlying message (Smash and Grab could be seen as lower class robots, or could also be seen as slaves. Either way the story fits just the same.)
But Purl's story only works with Yarns representing women in the workplace, and actually falls apart if you look at the short story at face value (there's literally no reason the "Bros" would be so awkward around Lacey or even Purl if they knew Yarn people existed.) Even outside of that, both stereotypes were almost outright offensive. It just felt like good intentions with poor execution, mostly due to the dumbed down plot. It would have fit much better if they skipped the metaphors.
No dialogue but still delivers the feel to the audience. Great work, Pixar.
Agreed; plus it crosses language barriers, without the need (and, often, flaws) of subtitles...
A type 3 artificial intelligence, alien civilization
Still uses a steam powered train.
OoF
That wasn't coal. So maybe some kind of fusion-powered train?
possibly releasing any heat thats in there and the civilization might be living things connected to robot bodies because they aren't able to go into space but thats just my thinking
It looks like coal.
Honestly, steam can never be forgotten, maybe it’s “gaseous” in some way with that special space coal?
This reminded me of Wall E in a way.
Same
I wonder why
Wonder if this takes place in the same universe as WALL-E. That'd be pretty cool actually!
Probably in the *extremely distant* future afterwards, but still you've got a point there.
They make similar robot sounds
BnL better be gone, and Wall-e and Eve fine!
Before wall-e
Now that I think about it, many of Pixar's movies are connected somehow.
This seems like the setup for a great co-op video game.
That was top notch
So true
That wasth legitneth
Yes we can go see the movie 🎥 I have to do a little more work tomorrow to see if we are able I will get back
Plot twist: these are Wall-E's family
Share mo lang?
100th like
They are the twin cousins
My number 1 favorite Pixar animation so far
The vibe I am getting from this is, smash the rich, grab the means of production.
have you seen match girl?
@@cdmonmcginn7561 Yes, that was a good one too.

"For he who sheds his blood with me this day shall be my brother."
Nice quote. But the fact that it's posted by one "Hannibal Lecter" gives us pause.
How Henry V of you.
The music!!! And the lil robot noises!! So cool!
Amazing how much you managed to flesh out a whole sci fi setting without relying on cliches and in just 7 minutes. Really incredible.
I am digging the more mature animations glad to see pixar showing animation isn't just for children but for everyone.
The only time Pixar made a childish franchise was Cars. Everything else they've produced can be enjoyed at all ages.
@@Skyefrost. they work for pixar or did you miss that its them letting their animators make What they want
My favorite Pixar film is Wall-E, so it's pretty obvious how much I love this short.
Same

Yep!!!

I had a dream that I watched
WALL •E 2
it was named
WALL•E 2
REPOPULATING
THE EARTH
It was awesome
But for some reason my dreams are so strange, WALL-E went to space, in a cannon, my brain is weard
Oof I wish I had a dream like that
I'm a simple man -- I see a robot with a hammer and sickle for hands in a dystopian Pixar short about production, disruption, and societal position, I click.
I'm a simple man.....I think you're perhaps a moron.
you got the hammer part right, but I am pretty sure the tool in his left hand is not a sickel.
Obv metaphorical
Finally, A version of WALL-E without those annoying humans! Thank you Pixar!
They went from an inconvenient scenario to a more inconvenient scenario.
Before, they weren't attached to each other yet being confined in a room. Now, they're permanently attached to each other, being free in the vast world.
Enthralling.
Brian, This is absolutely amazing. You can tell it’s a labor of love. I found myself grinning the whole time and felt his appreciation for his friend as he fought for him...Especially when he pops up out of the capsule and hands his buddy an energy ball. Well done!!!!
Imagine if the short film to be played before Dumbo (2019).
Wall-E 2 confirmed
I can hear many edgy 13 year olds chuckling at the title
Yup I am
@@KEVINDMASTAH SPLATOON FAN 🙌🙌🙌
if it was Grab and Smash I would agree with you
Delyc Heruta 🤣
That was, ADORABLE! And the Animation was so Fluid!
explain a plot badly:
a train is destroyed by robots because they couldn't high five they escape
That isn't the plot of the short, but go awf
@@taylorboatwright5539 it kinda is but go awhfh
@@SubsWithnoDadChallenge your a little incorrect, but go awhfhfhfawfh
And end up sharing a power cell, leaving behind a train FULL of power cells!
@@JPSE57 tbh I think they just figured that out eventually lol. Either that or they'll just look for some somewhere else since it's too risky considering that there could be more security drones inside.
