I came here after watching "Sympathy for The Machine" From curious archive. The whole concept of a war machine refusing war is so poetic and sad at the same time.
No matter how many times i see these animations, it amazes me how good Blizzard's art team is to be able to pull this stuff off. All the little details, the way the dirt crumbled around bastion as he stood up, the way the grass deformed when he walked on it, the sun coming through the trees, the way the water pooled in his hand, and the way the long grass swayed in the wind all looked incredible.
6 years later, now realising the title last bastion, isnt just about bastion being the last of his kind but also a bastion in the sense of a last hope for omnics
These animated shorts are like a time capsule of how things used to be. Like hanzo’s scatter arrrow, the self-repair arm bastion used to access the memories of the Omnic War is no longer a part of his kit in OW2.
William Crist erm... he was overpowered in the first year of overwatch, maybe, when no one knew how to fight him. Now? Honestly I think he’s the worst character in the game. He can dish out damage, yes, but with any coordination or like one ultimate your team should be able to dislodge a bastion.
Tyler Wheeler Tyler Wheeler there are a variety of things you can do. First off, dive comp works well. Simultaneously jumping on bastion with Winston, D.Va, and two flankers should be enough to dislodge him, especially with defense matrix available to eat up his return fire as you assassinate him. If you don’t want to do dive, you can also fight fire with fire and run a bastion and some shield tanks of your own, then just shred enemy shields and bastion faster than they can break yours. Junkrat helps with this because of his insane shield break, and mercy damage boost will help your bastion destroy shields faster too. Also Baptiste’s lamp is amazing because if you place it behind cover, your bastion gets 5 seconds of literal immortality during which he can melt the enemy bastion with no consequences. If you can’t kill the bunker comp with coordination alone, ultimates work. Dragonstrike and self destruct forces bastion to move or die, during which your team can rush him and kill him when he’s vulnerable while relocating. (Lucio speedboost is also useful here if you aren’t using dive heroes.) Sym’s wall can completely block his sight lines on you guys, EMP literally nullifies bastion AND all the shields protecting him, riptire can destroy they entire comp provided your junk is good enough to sneak it behind them, sound barrier or trans gives your team the tankiness to ignore his damage and outright kill him... the list goes on. I've watched this cinematic in particular several times. And every time I tear up. It's so cute, but the underlying representation of PTSD is the real kicker here. It might be effecting a fictional robot in a video game, but PTSD itself is very real. Thank you, Blizzard, for this cinematic.
It's a beautiful piece of story telling and doesn't use any humans or one single word of dialogue to convey the message or story. Someone doesn't have to do a bunch of clunky exposition or talking, it just happens.

Iron Giant meets Walle comes immediately to mind. Animation is superior, from character & background development to execution of cinematic direction. Excellent handling of sensitive subject matter that only those that have experienced, can fully comprehend. Kudos on a jobs well done!
The Overwatch film could be dark if they took it down that road. I'm not gonna lie, the warfights that took place during the Omnic crisis look absolutely brutal.
What's even more terrifying is that the bastion units were just the basic infantry of the Omnic forces, meaning that there were thousands of these death machines in any given battlefield scenario.
The ending scene made me cry, the battle is already over, and he's making a choice whether to fight back again or move on to something better. So he chose to live in peace... even with the bird
@@johnmalock6517 The bird coming back for the robot didn't flew away or died, the bird accepted to make the robot as its friend q-q and wants t o be with him through the new journey
The shot at 6:09 just looks so amazing. It’s like he’s stuck between making a decision; passion or objective. Does he carry on the orders he was given as a machine of war and attack the city or does he retreat back into the calmness of nature in the forest?
@@Dessicator1 I was going to say something similar. Characters who can't speak are forced to be more expressive through their actions and the way they interact with the world.
Maybe Bastion is way more important than he seems: he's the last of his model, after all. Even more, he's the last bastion from the omnic crisis, being the rest systematically destroyed. Even if he reprogrammed himself, that doesn't mean that he still preserves the original code he was built with. In other words, aside Sombra, he's probably the person (or robot, take your pick) closest to the truth about the Omnic Crisis.
@@ethanlauder4887 Maybe, but that's too simple for a Blizzard plot. I think more about something in the code that points out the true culprit behind the Omnic Crisis (both of them).
@@Ishidres Sombra is one of the few (aside Katya Volskaya) who knows about a big organization, above the UN or Overwatch or Talon... that surveys everything. That "Eye" (it's the only thing we can call them, given their icon) is maybe the cause of the two Omnic crisis. She got that information because they tried to hunt her down. Bastion probably has some kind of line of code that can point at them. In any case, no one should know they exist. Though, maybe, Reaper knows more than he wants to admit...
@@JeshuaMorbus Hopefully they actually touch-up on what you said in OW2. This "eye" you speak of kind of reminds me of the patriots from Metal gear solid.
How did we regress so far. If a time traveller went into the future today, and saw the current animation, it's actually shocking. How did we go from this which may be the peak of 3D animation, to nothing, despite it being the future. It's so ironic as Overwatch is supposed to be about an advanced future, but we are currently STUCK.
I love this short so much, particularly because 5:07 is our first real look at the Omnic Crisis. Like every character in the game knows about this huge event, and it’s such a big deal.. But it’s never shown, or really talked about in detail. But then you see this scene and you realize why peace between omnics and humans might seem like a crazy idea, and why something like that would have lasting effects on the characters and the in-game world.
Well it affected everyone around the world and it’s was due to I guess after the factory shut down the AI went rogue and said “OH you don’t need us anymore?!” But anyways most of these animation are basically about Either Overmatch members Or People that associated themself with them
Not only that, but it's very likely that city was the capital of Germany. It's near Eichenwald so the Omnics where this close to wiping out an entire city.
I actually hope this happens, especially since it’s been established that bastion is currently with Torbjorn, and OW2 shows how overwatch is officially back.
This one is the best. There are no words, no explanation and no humans. Only a robot, nature and his bird friend. I love it, how you guys can tell so much without any words. Great job!
I am again incredibly impressed by the creative team behind Overwatch. Video game aside, what a beautiful short film. You guys rock, thank you for putting so much care and effort into every aspect of this game. It does not go unappreciated!
Fun fact: they actually got the gun sound right While bastion has a minigun, his actual in game rpm is 1800, which is the same as the mg42, which sounds exactly like the gun in the cinematic Normally movies/shows make miniguns with actual higher rpms sound like this, but blizzard surprisingly got it right
Watching this six years ago, I didn’t really have a personal connection to this masterpiece. But after having gone through my own trauma and still recovering from it, this cinematic pulled at heart strings I didn’t know I still had and I admit I cried heavily. All it takes is one person who cares to help guide you back from the path of self-destruction, and to help you take the first step in seeking healing.
Qarasmatic _ the city wouldn’t have been expecting it They would have no forces prepared for it They would’ve been able to call people but the city would’ve taken heavy blows by the time they came
@@dragonboi6744 A bastion does not even have the fire capability of a tank even with his 'ult'. Sure many would die but you kind of underestimate the police force. Keep in mind the police still have access to a decent arsenal and could even spring in an ambush, not to mention the bastion is probably weakened and is rusty so it would be so easy for bullets to pierce its body
i love how his movement is a lot more fluid in peace mode. like it adds to the effect of "the combat robot doesnt like killing, and it never has, but its programming makes it" its just beautiful
I never noticed before, but it looks like Bastion has a 4 leaf clover near his reset button at the start, a sign of good luck for him being reactivated. Really cool.
You forget that Bastion is an omnic which are robots so advanced they claim to have souls and real emotions hence the Widowmaker short showing people with omnic partners in relationships.
I like how if someone doesn't know the character, they wouldn't see he has a huge gun on his back until he actually starts firing. Then the moss covering it is gone for the rest of the animation.
I mean there are tons of stories about benevolent giant beings that are loved by one unique character while the rest of the world sees something else. I think the Iron Giant just so happens to be a robot.
I'm quite fine if they keep making shorts, since they don't have to explain and evolve multiple characters, while still being grounded in different styles. I mean, if you compare each short, they are something entirely different. It just wouldn't work as well if it were 2 hours.
+TheKatanarama I never heard that and knowing blizzard that sounds false overwatch was always meant too b a game was first called project Titan you can look up interviews on RUclips also they never mentioned it being a movie like you said rumor perhaps
This hit me hard... I'm a combat veteran and I feel like Blizzard created this character to represent the struggles people have coming back from war. I've been shot at, had some very near death experiences, and also lost some friends of mine while overseas. Any loud noises or sounds that kind of represent an explosion or bullets flying at you have me turn my head every single time and the hair on my back stands straight up. This is truly touching that Blizzard made a character, to what I feel like is based on combat veterans with PTSD. The awareness is so real in this short, and I think everyone who watches it can get the general sensation of what combat veterans experience on the home front on a day to day basis. Great Job Blizzard. -A Combat Vet

You cry due to the tears of clarity. The video depicts the last remanence of mankind and the natural cycle process. Mankind was meant to be gentile. Gentlemen and Ladies. We were meant by commandment to be non destructive to life. Thou Shall Not Kill. And you cry because an entire race is not literate or can not understand the meaning of one little four letter word. Kill. If they could they wouldn't. Like the old lottery, no one wins except those who don't gamble life to win. The winners don't win due to lust and greed. the losers who played and lost , lose to greed and fixed numbers. Those who turn away from it and know its scheme neither win or lose. For they know it's rigged. State by state of states they walk away. Life as mankind's just wasn't meant to be , especially for a forever. Man - manos , the hand. The sign of humanity. Huh ? The color of the robot is old safety yellow and brown. Like that of industrial Keiser compressors.
You are crying because that's what it means to be human, you are a species who's proven to become emotionally attached and extremely empathetic to the fate of a toaster left behind during a move. Whom can form lasting, coherent friendships with a volleyball or a coconut, and who will routinely accept non-human entities such as dogs and cats as family members.
It isn't PTSD in its typical form. He isn't haunted, at least it wouldn't make sense for him to be. Though, he does have battle programming that was disengaged soley because he malfunctioned in the forest. It tends to reactivate anytime he analyzes a situation as a battle.
Yeah, it's not PTSD. It's more like a split-personality. The flashback is due to Bastion reading another Bastion's memory. It's only programming corrupted over time, leading to the more peaceful persona we see usually.
Blizzard make more than enough money, they have huge hits like Hearthstone and Diablo under their belt. Overwatch was just another huge success for them.
Where doe they get the money? Oh, just from these little known games you've probably never heard of, World of Warcraft, Diablo, a few others, nothing major.
+Pickle Johnson probably cause pixar is the most famous/one of highest quality animators (note i said ONE of highest quality, i didnt say they are the best, so dont get your panties in a twist)
I’m just getting into OVW and my friend sent me a playlist of cinematics to watch and needless to say I did NOT expect to be sobbing at 11 in the morning over a robot with ptsd and his emotion support bird
Is it really PTSD though?... I mean, it's likely the units were programmed to react to gunfire noises in self-defense, and him wanting to attack the city was just what the other Units in the area were likely programmed to do. Also, it's not really Bastion remembering the battle, he is just watching a recording of it as seen by the destroyed Unit he comes across. Even his hostile behavior after watching the video log could be attributed to him picking up the directive from the other Bastion.
@@vtr0104 PTSD is the traumatic conditioning of a person's mind rewired to react quickly to offending stimuli with a unpredictable fight or flight response, usually more with a fight response. In a way, the response to the woodpecker noise was more of a program thing, but a sufferer with a severe case of PTSD would probably react the same to the situation if he's given a minigun.
As someone who's never played or watched any overwatch content aside from a few gameplay videos, I'm really thankful that this video doesn't require any prior knowledge of the game's lore to understand it or feel sad about Bastion here. A+++ for that reason alone
The Wild Robot made me think of this animation in so many ways, as if this was the literal and figurative/metaphorical embodiment and inspiration of that movie. Weird how this one got nostalgic for me
As someone who has family members who were in the military and developed PTSD after coming home from deployment, when Bastion snapped back into reality after going haywire broke me. This really does happen when you witness the horrifying reality that is “war”. The veterans in my family are proud of their service, but their only wish is that the nightmares finally go away.
A lot of people like Dragons a lot more overall, but I think it's like comparing 2 different genres. Dragons was more action oriented, with fantastic fighting choreography, however the story telling had to be narrated and over exposed through the dialogue. The Last Bastion is more of a drama, and it does a MUCH better job of telling a story. Without a SINGLE WORD UTTERED you understand that there was a war between humans and robots, that the robots lost, that Bastion developed PTSD from said war, and struggles between whether or not he should take revenge on his fallen brothers. All of this through stunningly gorgeous animation (not that dragons had bad animation, I just think the animations quality shines more here) And that is why I like The Last Bastion better than Dragons

The shot at 6:09 just looks so amazing. It’s like he’s stuck between making a decision; passion or objective. Does he carry on the orders he was given as a machine of war and attack the city or does he retreat back into the calmness of nature in the forest?

WHY IS THERE MORE SOUL AND EMOTION IN BASTION THEN ALL THE HUMAN CHARACTERS
Because all of the human characters in the game have mouths. And when they open those mouths, Blizzard's atrocious writing falls out of them.
Because they're losing theirs in the war while he's finding his after it...

If he still has the original code buried in him, does that mean he has the shut down command?
@@JeshuaMorbus what other evidence is there atm that this exists?
@@JeshuaMorbus Hopefully they actually touch-up on what you said in OW2. This "eye" you speak of kind of reminds me of the patriots from Metal gear solid.
How did we regress so far. If a time traveller went into the future today, and saw the current animation, it's actually shocking. How did we go from this which may be the peak of 3D animation, to nothing, despite it being the future. It's so ironic as Overwatch is supposed to be about an advanced future, but we are currently STUCK.

But we all know that this will never happen XD

Kill. If they could they wouldn't. Like the old lottery, no one wins except those who don't gamble life to win. The winners don't win due to lust and greed. the losers who played and lost , lose to greed and fixed numbers. Those who turn away from it and know its scheme neither win or lose. That actually makes bastion a deep and interesting character, a robot with PTSD that fought in the omnic war.
It isn't PTSD in its typical form. He isn't haunted, at least it wouldn't make sense for him to be. Though, he does have battle programming that was disengaged soley because he malfunctioned in the forest. It tends to reactivate anytime he analyzes a situation as a battle.
I thought PTSD aswell, get the guy a break people he's the real victim here. =(
He has a very sad backstory. Look it up on the wiki later, pretty much everyone in overwatch has had some trauma in the past.
Yeah, it's not PTSD. It's more like a split-personality. The flashback is due to Bastion reading another Bastion's memory. It's only programming corrupted over time, leading to the more peaceful persona we see usually.

A beautiful video but also a very very interesting way of showing just how PTSD can be.
All of this through stunningly gorgeous animation (not that dragons had bad animation, I just think the animations quality shines more here)
And that is why I like The Last Bastion better than Dragons
When i was 9 years old i watched this 20 times i loved this animation. Then i finally found this so much memories brings back.
