Mount Whitney Winter Ascent: My first solo climb

- I climbed Mount Whitney this December on my first solo and winter camping trip. I'd never been camping or done a big hike solo, let alone in the winter... I'm still a noob though and got caught in bad weather after the weather forecast failed to predict the heavy snow. I packed up before my second night but came back a few days later with my friend Will Carmack to day climb the Whitney Trail. It was a wonderful experience and one I'm so glad I got to experience.

Epic video, well done. I like the filming style. Those views were spectacular. I hope to get back to the Himalayas next year as well.
Thanks Gabriel, let me know if you do 😊
@@PemaTravels Sounds good! :)
I found your video a couple months before I did my first solo at Mt Whitney a couple weeks ago. I turned around myself due to altitude sickness, spent another night at trail camp and got caught in a blizzard in the early morning. What an adventure!! Thanks for this, it sure gave me that extra push to do it solo!
What a journey!! I got cold just watching it, but the views...! :-)
It wasn’t too bad the second time around, but yes the first trip was freeezing haha
proud of you!
Thank you Jacks 😊
Good on you. Keep going for it.
Pema is BACK! missed you and your videos. Great video
Thanks Allen 😊🙏🏽
Absolutely beautiful! Thanks to Gabriel for sharing this channel 😎🙌🤗❤
Aww he shared my channel?
@@PemaTravels yes! Beautiful sights 😊😎🙌
Superior story telling! You captured and conveyed the experience very well. I felt emotional watching from beginning to end. And extra kudos for waiting the storm out and trying again.
Seen several Whitney Hike videos of late from others posted from novice first timers like yourself in this video, to well experienced seasoned hikers, and by far your documenting video of your hike as you did this one was epic ⭐️ first in its freshness you captured that I saw and felt, and am sure others will too as viewed, kudos to you! Seriously meant . Very uplifting and warm. Nice to see. 🏆👍
You did very well and exercised good judgement in how you made it to summit Whitney as you did.. Nicely done.
great video and editing! thx!
Found you by way of Gabriel Traveler recommendation. Enjoyed very much your peaceful artistic vlogging style and looking forward to experiencing more of your work.
Beautiful blog 👌👌👌😊
Thank youuu 🙏🏽
Another fantastic video Pema, well done to you for sticking with it and trying again after the storm, it was certainly worth it for those views. Nothing quite like your first climb 🥰. Loving your videos🤩
Amazing, what a beauty.
Thank you :)
beautiful-welcome back
Thanks Colin 🙂
This is different. Keep it up!
Thank you :)
Just look at these great views on big screen, so nice but damn alone is😱
That’s how I felt in the snow 😆
I love this. Incredible cinematography, great music, wonderful story. Thanks for sharing
such a nice video!!! That beautiful summit smile says it all :)
Great job! I love how you packed down the snow and snuck your tent into that tiny spot. Good gear choices too. I’ve summited Whitney in the summer but I really love watching these tougher climbs. Respect to you
WoW great hike you
Looks so peaceful
Oo it was 😊 minus the snow lol
Like the video enjoyed it very much going to watch more of your videos. Glad I found you!
Glad your back and loved the new style , epic views and the background music suited it very well , keep up the great work , very serene youve done it very very well
As a girl from M.N. you looked a bit unsure of your self on the ice. You did well my friend, dearly missed your vlogs. I will be here like the rising sun. Now in south A.Z. No ice. lol.
Lol it was verrry slippery
Holy shit Pema is uploading again!!!!!
Pema my dream is to hike from Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp.
@@brantmyers3619 that’s a long hike! Luka to EBC is usually long enough for most haha
Great video! Gabriel sent me here and thought I had better support a fellow RUclipsr. Loved the film style.
Thanks for the support!
I love the video and filming style! Well done!
Thank you, took a while running back and forth haha
@@PemaTravels I figured that made it all the more challenging! I want to do a solo winter ascent for Mt Wash. I tried twice already in white out conditions. I saw your video when Gabriel commented.
Merry Christmas, And all my best in the New Year.
Thanks Tom, you too :)
OMG,...Pema, Pema, ...my fave RUclipsr.....it seems it's been forever since your last upload,..where have you been all this time, girl? And as usual, this one is awesome.
Welcome back Pema.
Haha just on IG, but thank youuu
I love that you retried and summited. Great job!
These drought winters have made for some great late season climbs usually the trail would be under a few feet of snow. I tried to climb Mt Williamson several years back in April and had to turn around because of steep rotten snow.
What a gorgeous place...exactly half as tall as Everest
Gorgeous video!
Thank you thank you 😊
Great video. Either you speeded up the video or you were moving at a good clip for those conditions and that altitude. Now you are an experienced and responsible hiker by turning back for conditions you hadn't experienced.
Good on you!
Well done!
Awesome 👍🏻
What Camera did you use, this is extremely well done. Judges score 3 10's... BTW liked and subscribed.
Did you have to use crampons or microspikes? If so what boots did you use? Im trying to climb Whitney in winter as well. Thanks great vid
Is this trip suitable for a French Bulldog?
How did you do those epic video clips from far away with the camera you have? There must be someone who took it from afar? Also, no music credits?
I shot every clip myself using a tripod or placing the camera on rocks
Can you walk up to visitor centre and get hiking permit if you hiking after Nov 1?
Gab sent me!
Haha that’s awesome! I have to go say thanks
Pema are u Tibetan?
Nepali
I’m Tibetan born in Nepal 😆
Is the stone house at the very top?
Yes. Not a house tho.
Camera work is hard. good video.
Thank you :)
Amazing video
Your name seems like a Nepalese, Tibetan, Indian heritage?
Yes I’m Tibetan, mother born in Nepal, father born in India
Not even winter conditions......... didn’t even need any winter gear.
What month did you do this?
Thats all the snow there is at that elavation in the middle of winter?
There had been record low precipitation in the past year. I believe there’s over a foot of snow that fell right after Christmas now :)
I would add a voice over at certain parts and really good video - like the titles
Thanks Andrew, I started with a voiceover but got frustrated/ don’t have a mic with me lol
Wanted to do a silent hiking film instead
@@PemaTravels ha, or a atmos sound dub but you need an external mic to pick up all the sounds of nature
