Hi Ryan! I actually picked up the original Getsu Fuma Den cart on Famicom a couple of years ago. It was a bucket list game for me. It's also one of my favorites. I had the same problems you did with Undying Moon. However, I discovered something that makes the game a little more bearable: 1. Collect the annoying Yin and Yang things 2. Beat the boss at the end of Level 1. 3. Instead of going to level 2, go back to the Fuma Estate. When you use this option, you will still loose some of your other parts but since you didn't die at the boss, you will be able to keep all of your yin and yang gems. Then Play through level 1 again until you have enough of them to upgrade your base skills. The base skills are actually more important than the weapon upgrades themselves. Over time, you can use this to build your health, get additional potions and unlock more weapon racks so you have a bigger choice of starting weapons. Early on in the game, in terms of weapons, focus on the nasty, chipped up looking Katana. Since it is your first weapon, you will be able to bring it's attack power up as it moves up in rank (at the moment, mine has a base of 92 damages whereas it usually starts off with 80). Once you focus on that stuff, things will get a little easier (and please take easy with a huge grain of salt). I actually feel your pain on this game. When I purchased it, I was expecting a sequel with that awesome Ukiyo-e art style it's using. Instead, I got a Dead Cells clone with upgrade systems that aren't obvious to the player because of the way it's designed. I still have fun with the game but I do have a love / hate relationship with it. Hope some of those tips help you out. Enjoy and try not to throw your Switch across the room 😂
I actually just beat that 3rd boss at misty peaks. The two twin demons, but still went back to the estate because I didn’t have any potions left lol. But yeah I had to play the first two levels over and over again just farming those materials lol
Growing up, I always thought Arnold was pink because of the infrared vision from the predator. Like you’re playing the game through the predators eyes. Also explains the weird levels that don’t look like the jungle. 😜
The one thing I dislike about Konami (among other things) is that they've honorably destroyed the Silent HIll franchise after The Room, and then when Kojima and Del Toro were like "Let's make a real good game", new Konami chief was like Nah and threw away all the potential the series had after SH4. Tom Hewell was a real dick. Edit: Silent Hill 1-4 are canon and real horror/drama classics. Play them if you can.
I keep forgetting that there's a Porky Pig game where he's in a nightmare with Daffy(?) and the music is very relaxing. I forgot what it was called but it's an honorable mention @talkaboutgames.
I am with Mike on the punish aspect of games. If they don't have it great, but if they do whatever, I don't mind the challenge of having to beat the level and the boss in one setting. Another solid episode guys! Always looking forward to Friday and talk about games.
I liked that boss battle/send back conversation, that's a tricky one. I think it all depends on the game on how far back you should go, although in general as a gaming p---y the less far back I go makes me happy so I can just go straight to the main boss and just fight the boss not have to deal with any other bs. Like it's nice with Huntdown, you can fight the bosses over and over again without going back anywhere, not even a checkpoint, which I think might've even hurt that game if you had to start again at a mid-level checkpoint AND then fight the boss. BUT then I remember when I was a kid thinking it was a huge accomplishment beating Bowser in Mario 1 where if you lose, you have to play the entire stage again AND try to beat Bowser. That's a totally different game if they had you start from a checkpoint or a few steps away from Bowser. Probably a little easier but idk, little Mario vs Bowser and all those hammers and his flames is still tough. Glad the game is the way it is though. Anyways, cool topic and a fun episode as always guys! 👍
My main problem is that as an adult with children I have very little time to play games, so replaying a level means that I spend "precious gaming time" redoing what I already did. It's like less about the challenge and more about the time. I do agree that having to pass it in one sequence could be a worthwhile experience, but at this point in my life, after beating such games in the past, I just want to spend my time more "effectively".
I believe in Castlevania when you die on a boss it will respawn you right before the boss area unless it's a game over, in which case you'll start at the beginning of the level.
I think going back when losing to the boss depends on the level meaning if it’s a castle go to the beginning of the castle or a level go to the beginning of the boss level but never the level before
Maybe Konami occasionally gets into some kinda legal trouble because their business license in Japan says "makes video games" on it, rather than "makes slot machines"; so they have to make at least one video game per decade or something... Did you know that Konami themselves consider the original GetsuFumaDen to number amongst their Castlevania games? I guess because the programmers took programming elements from Castlevania. So, obviously not part of the immediate Castlevania family, but sort of like the foreign exchange student that lives in that family's home. There is an English Patch for it too (two versions, I believe), over at Romhack. With Predator, it almost looks like they were borrowing more heavily from the comic books, than they were from the movie. And there have been other games that that seems true of too. Like, maybe they couldn't get the licensing rights (or whatever you call it) to make a game which references a popular movie. But then they realize that the characters that are in that popular movie, are _also_ in some other media form; which is far-less popular, and they _can_ get the rights to _that._ And if people mistake their shitty side-brand game as being associated with the popular movie...yeah; that was the plan all along.
About that question at the end, i think it's a matter of design. If the difficulty is partly keeping your health to reach the boss and fight it with what's left, if that is intended, then spawning right before the boss defeats the purpose. But if there is no difference against the boss in terms of items / buffs / whatever you start the fight with, it feels pointless and a useless drag. That's the way i see it at least. I can remember lots of dark souls moments or elden ring where i felt like there should have been a spawn closer to certain enemies. Then again it's part of the game's difficulty and personality. So i guess what i am saying is there is something to be said about the reason behind making you start over a certain portion
cause pissing ppl off to piss them off is not really something that keeps your potential fans interested. it's just bad business. make the difficulty of starting over further logic at the very least. get you used to fighting new enemy types, get you to manage items and buffs and new mechanics correctly, etc

I had issues with input delay in that game. A game that requires fast reactions shouldn't have that much input delay, especially when you jump.
@@nakedbeekeeper9610 The delay is mainly there to extend the reach of your double jump
