    Yeah, I know. Everybody's a critic.
    But now, it's MY turn to be one.
    INSPECT CHAINS FOR TWISTS!!
    BOTH of these chains are twisted!(3 railers not only would've prevented this, but made the whole process much faster & easier.)
    At 3:45, you can see 2 cams on the outside rail. Both are in the open position, but they are facing in OPPOSITE directions.
    Uh, red flag???🤔
    At 4:20, the cam being tightened is in the correct position. The safety guy turns it clockwise to tighten it.
    But there is a twist between this cam & the next one.
    10 seconds later, our safety guy begins to turn that next one clockwise, but ends up going counterclockwise with it.
    Uh, another red flag?... maybe?
    At 7:20, he tightens the top cam on the inside chain. After he does this(look close), you can see the round edge of the cam facing outward.
    Wrong, wrong & wrong!
    Chains are manufactured in a manner that places the curved edge of the cams, when in the open position, aligned with the curve of the tread when you drape the chains over the tire(easy indication that you haven't installed them upside down). Tightening them points the curved edge toward the bead. When the vehicle is in motion, centrifugal force keeps the cams in the closed position.
    If the closed cams face the wrong way, centrifugal force will swing them back out to the OPEN position.
    This is why chains get thrown, people.
    Running with twisted chains causes weak links & shortens the life of the chain.

    For future reference - Hope you appreciate constructive criticism.
    For a person watching how to chain for the first time, this video is not real clear. It does not show how the chains are connected to each other. You say in the video, “You need to hook the chains together”, but there’s no clear video on how to do that. Also, need to indicate that there’s no twists in the chain when hooking them together. Additionally, adding bungee cords to help prevent loosening of chains is highly recommended (hooks facing outer part of tire so there’s no tire damage).
    In my personal opinion, being you are the safety coordinator for a trucking company. This video should’ve been very detailed, showed every step clearly and explained every step on how and why you do certain things.

    The only reason to chain all tires on one axle is if the othe axle is a dead axle. If that is the case use 3 rail chains. If both axles are powered use one chain on each of the outside tires on each axle. It prevents the safety hazard of laying in between the drives and under the truck.

    Chained up on several mountain passes over the years depending on road shutdowns and really watching/listening to weather and radar, I've made the choice to shutdown or chain. Been with CFI many years, it's what you the driver safe in doing as to shutdown or chain up, and planning well ahead is a big factor to the decision. Anyways I prefer 3 railed and yes their heavier but two sets of dually chains will work to. A descent video, but much more detail for drivers that have never chained before would make for a better video. Chains get you out of trouble not into trouble if you know what your doing, it's those that don't chain and get stuck on a mountain grade that makes for bad on everyone else. Most drivers I've met that haven't chained before will say how tight, I point to some broken links on the highway.....as tight as you can get them and stop just after and recheck the tightness/tension. Inspect chains before you need them that their in good shape and don't have broken links, etc. Dont forget to use bungee cords after youve got your chains on and tightened Be safe drivers.

    • @imjustpassinthru
      @imjustpassinthru 3 года назад

      Of course you can. I alway did. Get the tractor out from under the trailer where you can work on it. Also, you can put a block of wood under one tire of a dual set in order to lift the adjacent tire off the ground.

    In my 15 to 16 yrs here at CFI. I never put chains on.. if it's bad enough, I'm done. Between Oct and April if n northwest, my phone or tablet and xm radio is on weather channel. Even transport America tells it's drivers if u can't average 45 mph, it's waste of fuel and unsafe..they tell thier drivers to stop

      Never add binders to cams unless you want to cut chains off an axle one day. If it is so loose you need a binder then the chain is not installed right. A great job would be 3 of 5 or 3 of 4 binders tight and the last not able to twist until driven a few. I used a short pipe on the key so I would not have to stop without a parking lot to check. I sold and installed chains for several years out of Big Bear California. Even the chain company liked my installs to the point they chainged (Get the pun?) their install methods. I also have used a 4x6 board to drive over with the chain links boxed around the board. When I get a truck I can do another video with I might add it to my collection.

    Thank you for the demonstration. Unfortunately, this is completely unrealistic. I have never applied chains without snow, mud, and ice present. Also, (and most importantly), you would very rarely need to apply chains without a trailer. You could never stand in between the tires the way you demonstrated.

    Does CFI not have power dividers on their tractors? Misinformative videos like this are the reason why you see chains laying all over the roadway on 80 over Donner. If your axles lock you only need to put the singles on the 4 outside tires, this process demonstrated will take someone 3 hours to chain up in the snow on the hill. Additionally, if only the front drive axle is powered in these trucks, the 1/2 pair “3-rail” chains is also a much simpler process and lessens the risk of the 2 separate singles getting tangled together when driving, which they’re bound to do based this sloppy work.

    • @CFIdrive
      @CFIdrive  5 лет назад

      Chain laws vary by state, at CFI you are the captain of the ship and chains should only be used to get out of a bad situation, not designed for continuous travel. CFI trucks are twin screw, and yes, it does take time to chain.

    • @brad202684
      @brad202684 4 года назад +3

      CFI this video is comical. Yeah it does take time to chain, but teaching methods like this will set your drivers up for failure by running out of hours on the hill because they spent 3 hours chaining using this method. There are so many more simple and efficient ways of hooking your chains, without having to lay down on the ground. I run Donner Pass Between Sacramento and Reno every day. It was a rough go when I first ever chained (about 90 minutes) but now I can chain my single drive tractor with 3-rail chains and 4 chains on my double pups in 20-30 minutes.
      For instance, you should NEVER hook anything before you roll the truck to finish tightening the links/cams. Doing so will be too likely to throw the chain over the wheels and get tangled and damaged. Drape the chain evenly over the tire and roll back or forth, THEN hook your links. SO MUCH EASIER. I’m critical yes but I see so many drivers from all the mega carriers struggle out on the mountain, and I just wish they were better trained and informed, training videos like this are a disservice to your drivers and the motoring public. Thank you

      CFI Well that is about as silly as it gets. Maybe you guys don’t drive in mountains but out here in British Columbia Canada we certainly do drive distances on our chains. The Coquihalla highway has some long chain up sections as long as 30 miles or more. We chain up often and use nothing but triples takes me 5 min per wheel set. putting 2 sets of singles on a wheel set is asking for trouble.
      If your going to do a safety video at least do it safely. I mean standing in between the wheels while the truck is running and someone is in it would get me fired.

    "You can actually come over here and make it easier"....., you said.
    You seemed to forget the tractor will be hooked to a trailer when we do this out on the road and make the job a bit more difficult.
    oh brother, you needed to remind viewers is not as easy when actually hooked to a trailer. Also, single chains get twisted real easily and can be a headache when trying to tighten them.
    Explain this before throwing them over the tire.
    You don't mention the importance of the bungee chords. Without them, you risk serious damage if the chain breaks loose, the tension created by the bungees help the chain fall to the outside if they fail, instead of inward and get tangled between the tires.
    This presentation is as bad as I've seen
