Nice look at your pants I really cheered when I saw the cast iron tortilla pan come out because I have one that's a bit smaller than that, that's good enough for doing two eggs on, but I carry around a little flour and make flour tortillas when I'm on the trail because they're real easy they come in a premix so all you got to do is add water stir let them rise for 15 minutes and you're ready to go.

I think this is a very helpful video for alot of people especially those just purchasing and some of us that just love cooking at camp 👍👍I believe after all the years I've camped and backpacked I realized cooking may be my favorite thing wile out on the trail.
Me too! Well, one of them - it’s that nice time of the evening, all the chores and duties are done - camp set up, firewood collected and prepped, everything squared away - then sitting down to go through the ritual of cooking - very relaxing!

Hello Simon, I just subscribed after having watched a number of your videos. Honestly this video was like looking at my own outdoorsy cooking gear! I feel so honored by that, being in such fine company! For Mother's Day my husband bought me a 2 Liter Dutch Oven, solving the void in my gear for a smaller one. Simon, I became a subscriber because of this video and the clear link for cooking gear. Now I know when you cook up anything I'm pretty well covered with whatever will be needed - so happy about that. It's a real money saver too as good gear is an investment over time for most of us. Well, there you have it in a nutshell. Just wanted you to know how your videos mean so much to many of our hobbies and life's enjoyments.
Thank you Pamela, and thanks for the sub! I totally agree - gear is an investment, I have bought things over the years that have turned out to be total rubbish, so I’m very careful now - I’ll spend as much as I can afford on quality items. 👍
Having just watched your video on cooking pots and pans i realised i watch two kind of bushcraft videos. One to watch for entertainment alone , and one to watch for entertainment and to pick up some very useful tips . Yours is the latter and may you keep on doing these. All the very best.
When the video started I thought to myself ''blimey, look how easily he drags that canoe around'. The surprise only lasted for 6 seconds and then the truth was revealed. :-) Nice.
Cheers Simon, Liked the video, I have a ton of cast iron cookware . I use a iron skillet every day , it was my grandma’s , gave to me when I was 19 , almost 37 years ago. A lot of my aluminum cookware I buy is from goodwill ( second hand store) when I get it home I modify it to use on a open fire. I make my own bags now after watching your video so thanks for that . Well , Mr. Simon until we meet again , ATB.
When ATV camping or horse packing, I throw in a 12" aluminum dutch oven. You can also use it as a grill-- toss in some charcoal and put a 13" round grill right on top. When car camping, I'll have those cast iron ovens stacked 5 high. Great channel. Thanks for taking the time.
1st let me say that it's a pleasure to finally see a person paddle a canoe like it was meant to be paddled. On one side using the "J" Stroke without switching sides all the time. Canoeing I have the pleasure of taking a cast iron Dutch Oven and frying pan and not worrying about the weight , if anything the weight helps to balance the canoe out. Kayaking Have to be more thoughtful ( Stainless Steel ) since packing space is a lot more limited then the Canoe. I started back in the late 50's with a pot and frying pan my Mom let me take camping. Nice thing about all those years in between then and now , it let me acquire a good selection.
Thanks Chuck! Sounds like you and I are singing from the same song sheet, for me it’s cast iron for canoeing and stainless steel for everything else - I may try again with a titanium pot for backpacking - just got to cook differently I guess! Great Video and nice collection of cookware, I believe its an evolution that we all go through where we start at one place and move through the lightweight, cast iron, non stick, open fire, spirit stove, gas stove, but we always seems to go back to those few favorites. keep the great content coming.
Simon, the iron cast flat pan you show in this video we call it ¨Comal¨ back in México and everybody in a mexican family knows when Mamá says put the Comal on the fire it is time to heat up the tortillas y began the family dinner, I got a collection of cast iron pans, steel pots and kettles including a cast iron ALAMO 77 stove for winters (of course I never takes out of its place) , because I like outdoors all my life. thanks for yours videos and greetings from Monterrey, the City of the Mountains, México. You got my like and I´m your Suscriber now. Ho, by the way, I have a two persons Keppler folding Kayak too. Dios te bendiga a Ti y a Tu Familia.
Hi Simon, I recall an incident with a metal frying pan. We were on an open canoe course on the dart and staying in a caving centre. There was a huge metal frying pan which was put to good use cooking the bacon. Trying to be a helpful chap i spent a long time scrubbing the pan almost back to its original state. The "cook" was not best pleased as it had taken years to achieve a certain patina! i now know one should just wipe it down. Good video as usual.
I very often took only my aluminium messtin set when out for a night or two. Even when you're carrying other pots and pans they can serve as a box for some fragile stuff and, if needed, serve as backups. Very light and the rectangular shape has them fit in easily in a rucksack's side pouches. When I still used my good old external frame pack, a Camp Trails Ponderosa from 1977, I carried a belt with pouchesfor emergency gear, in one of which I had this messtin set. I now sometimes take the frame along in the canoe to strap my waterproof bags onto for portages.
Cheers Johan! Yes, they are certainly versatile - I used to have a survival kit that I’d put together - all contained with a mess tin. Good idea with the pack frame - I’ve used my LK35 frame in the same way.
Simon this was a very informative video of pots and such. Oh please do a video on your beautiful canoe. Thanks again for sharing Stay safe in the woods
Our pleasure Simon. No apologies necessary. People who watch your videos know you by character and demeanor. You’re brilliant in every video you produce. Honest & sincere. Question......Do you find as the popularity of bushcraft grows, does the industry “really” improve on the essential tools for bushcraft camping or are they just repackaging/marketing the existing products? Thanks and as always God bless & Safe travels 🙏🏼⛺️😎
I think that is often the case, but new, clever and genuinely useful ideas do also pop up too, addressing the problems people encounter with certain popular bits of kit - the nesting titanium cup for example - deals with the problem of storage by making the perfect size to fit over the bottom of the popular Nalgene or klean Kanteen bottle, folding handles and bail handle to limit size. Before, people were often carrying,an often oversized, and considerably heavier pot that needed to be packed separately. 👍
A toggle on a string will hold the nalegen over a fire quite well. ( alternative to fish spreader ). If tied off center it will come out easily when pressure is released.
A great set, loving the zebra billy can with the little built in steamer/fryer, a very handy little pot :) can imagine a hot choc with marshmallows in the crusader cup for a very cold day.
Thanks Georgina, Hot choc with marshmallows is certainly no stranger to that cup I can tell you! I do love hot chocolate in the evening! Zebra pots are great - very reasonably priced and tough enough to take the abuse that cookware tends to get in camp - well recommend -,if I had to choose one item from this video, that would be it. 😁
Hello Simon from the Great Pacific NW USA, enjoy your videos on outdoor/bush craft and cooking. May I add to your knowledge on cast iron and such. just for reference the Dutch oven is traditionally known as the one with the legs and the other without is know as a camp oven according old cowboy cooks on the trail and chuck wagon cooking. the legs allow you to stack several ovens on top of each other when cooking many items at once, That''ts how we identify them when shopping to purchase or buy replacement parts and so on. Hope this dose not offend, just a bit of information. keep up the great videos. Rob
Thanks Bob, great info mate. I didn’t know the leg less ones were called camp ovens. Makes sense what you said about stacking the Dutch ovens. Cheers, Simon
Legs for the Dutch Ovens allows them to be further from the coals - but it also allows them to be stacked. So you put coals under one, and on the lid - then you put another dutch oven on top of that, and so forth. Quite handy if you are cooking for a crowd, or multiple dishes at once. Petromax sell them with and without legs.
I thought with pride oh I'm not as much of a collector as Simon until I saw water bottles count too as well as kettles. Then the trangia came out and I knew we were twins separated at birth. 🤣😂
Great set of pots and pans you have, Simon! Lol slave to the pans😊🤣😂 I too, have that same problem, I think it’s gear period for me😇. Great seeing Mags out and about with ya. Gotta love it when wet dogs show their affection😉. Tfs and taking the time to tote them out with ya in the woods. Many blessings and take care friend, Nikki.
Love your videos! I recommend checking out cast iron pie irons. They are still heavy, but they are the perfect size for a sandwich and can usually be unscrewed to pack up small. And they can be used as 2 (very) small frying pans. I'm all in on cast iron since it can be used on gas, fire, and induction stoves. I learn a lot from you. Thanks so much!
Also, I learned a trick that I think you might like. You can cool a metal container on a hot day by putting it in an unwaxed canvas bag, getting it wet, and letting the water evaporate in the sun while you are carrying it :)
Hey Simon hope all is well.loved the vid.im a bit of a cast iron nut myself. I could easily spend an entire day cleaning and taking care of my collection. Loved the little petromax at the end. Anywho glad to see you out and about. Atb from across the pond.
I learn so much from your vids.....despite that my stuff is no where as ambitious or comprehensive; my go to cookset is an old Swedish army Trangia, when I'm solo. I love the wire handle you made, and the idea that the Dutch Oven is no good for carrying MORE than 2 miles!!!! And as always, the canoe....
I used to have one of those Swedish army mess kits - brilliant it was, I passed it on to a friend in need years ago and miss it. They do a stainless steel version too, but harder to come by.
Me too! It doesn’t stop there either! Lamps? Yup, water bottles? That too! Rucksacks too, oh and sleeping bags, tents, maps - lots and lots of maps, I think I’m in serious need of therapy!!!! 😂😂😂
Funny I had the same idea as David Huxtable. The Pommie army are going to be staving cuz Simon nicked off with all their cooking gear and shot through into the woods. They'll be sending the SAS out to apprehend him, after a good feed of Simon's bush cooked tucker of course.
Alright, now that we've seen the gear, we need to see a round-up on your favorite (favourite) meals. Also ... tee hee ... you wouldn't be British without a tea kettle. Such a civilized bunch you are.

I also have a couple of other sets plus ex army mess pan kit. I use 3 kinds of burner, a gas burner, a hobo stove in many sizes for about 30 of those, two home made wood gas stoves. etc.

The giant kettle is so cool!Lots of good info here, thank you.
Very interesting. Great segment.
Simon, great video. Thought I had enough pans, but after seeing your video I just bought a couple more!
Haha -oh no! Cardinal sin, I hope he forgave you!!
Hello :) thx for sharing :)
A wow canoe and dog is obviously enjoying the camp life lol :)
Video puts the whole pots and pans lot into perspective :)
Thank you! Yes, she loves it - a good (if soggy) camp companion 😁
Dear old Newfie, having a drink as she set off 😻
The legs on the Dutch ovens are so you can stack them on top of each other and put coals between each too.
Thanks again for sharing
Stay safe in the woods
Thanks James! I do have an old video on the canoe - apologies now for the quality and cringe value! 😂
Wow. That's a lot of different pots and pans. Cool.
If tied off center it will come out easily when pressure is released.
cool stuff Simon. Looks like some stuff has been around a while , I think thats what makes them cool.......Carl USA
Tried and tested - it’s those old, beat-up pots that have proved them selves! 😁
Cheers Carl!
Very good video a lot of nice gear thanks
What a fantastic looking canoe, as usual a great video !
Good one Simon.its nice to see that other people have too many pots as well
Cheers Colin
We are not alone!! 😂😂😂
Great vlog Simon . really enjoyed it 😊
Looks like a great coat on your skillet
It gets the most use - the more you use em, the better they are! 😁
This video is great.I am trying to shoot a video as good as you. I always cheer you on.
Another excellent show, well done Simon
Good gear. I like the small Dutch oven. Your canoë is very nice. Thanks
Thank you buddy! 😁
Hahaha - I think you might be right!! 😂
THE Abe Froman? The Sausage King of Chicago?
Great set of pots and pans you have, Simon! Lol slave to the pans😊🤣😂 I too, have that same problem, I think it’s gear period for me😇. Great seeing Mags out and about with ya. Gotta love it when wet dogs show their affection😉. Tfs and taking the time to tote them out with ya in the woods. Many blessings and take care friend, Nikki.
Thank you Nikki! Not just me then with the gear addiction!! 😁😂 cheers!
Simon, a bloke in the woods lol no not just you 🤣
Love your videos!
Brilliant as always!
I have several kettles too, the top reason to use the Trangia ones even without the pan set is they don't drip!
Lovely videos :)
Hey Simon hope all is well.loved the vid.im a bit of a cast iron nut myself. I could easily spend an entire day cleaning and taking care of my collection. Loved the little petromax at the end.
Anywho glad to see you out and about.
Atb from across the pond.
Thanks Tim! There’s something very satisfying about a bit of cast iron maintenance isn’t there! Cheers mate!
Your channel has great videos.
Thank you sir! 👍😁
Thank you Sir.
Best wishes.
Nice assortment! I’m a slave to kits too.....Amazon will be delivering a Trangia cooking kit on Monday....
Ah, great stove! I hope you enjoy it! 👍
Nice video Simon, thanks for sharing
Nice one Simon
Thank you for all the effort you put in your videos!
Really helps me out!
Brother Simon, you have all the angles covered with the cooking kit. You can improvise, adapt an overcome with that nice kit. Atb Von
one of the best kit videos ive ever watched very very professional like 🌲🇨🇦🌲
Thank you Richard! Really glad you liked it buddy 😁
Great video roll on pay day when i get to buy a kettle and mess tin
I would accuse you of hoarding pots and pans but I share your addiction. I have a similar problem with twig stoves. 😜
abe frohman 😉🤪
Lol
Me too! It doesn’t stop there either! Lamps? Yup, water bottles? That too! Rucksacks too, oh and sleeping bags, tents, maps - lots and lots of maps, I think I’m in serious need of therapy!!!! 😂😂😂
Rest assured...you’re not the only one ;-). And Simon, thanks for sharing!
Simon, a bloke in the woods camping is the therapy 😎 🌲⛺️🌲
excellent video Simon an awesome collection of pots n pans , i dont honestly think anybody noticed the 81 times you said ...UM... lol...atb
Hahaha! I think that damn twig in the foreground distracted most people!! 😁
That might be a video for the future - nice idea! No teapot, though, I just use teabags on my cup! I may need to up my game!! 😁
@@simonablokeinthewoods This looks to be just the ticket for you ... a collapsible kettle ...

I love that dogs timing!!! Lol ! : )
Yeah - spot on, that was!! 🙄
Loving the Dutch oven, good for some damper and dumplings for a stew. I have two small pans, alli- I know, careful, - I have a cast iron frying pan too. I also have a couple of other sets plus ex army mess pan kit. I use 3 kinds of burner, a gas burner, a hobo stove in many sizes for about 30 of those, two home made wood gas stoves. etc.
Good, lightweight gear - I see you are keen stove builder - nothing like homemade! 😁
