part of the reason they might have less synth/electronic sounds throughout is because the unfortunately they parted ways with one of the members who was typically on keys. He was also a big part of production and writing with oli for a while. it seems like it's all on good terms but I could hear a clear difference in sound with Jordan Fish being gone now. still a kickass song tho.
I think he's saying 'should've' but using 'of' instead of 'have' is pretty common in the area that Oli is from. I'm from that area and people at my work still do it and they're older 😂
the original lyrics is: "Nobody loves you like I love you Oh, my dear But you should've known That this was gonna end in tears" so it could be that someone or the AI used to generate the video didn't get it and mistook 😆 love to see you breakout on that error 😆
@Hit_me_Up_The_Justin_Hawkins ah ah ah it would be a pleasure even though I'd have some problems fully understand you because my English listening skill is definitely far from perfect😵
Dear Justin, From one middleaged rock-songwriter to another (I'm 53 and writing the songs for my rockband, Reverb Poets, over here in Copenhagen, Denmark): I don't think grammar is in any way important in music. Music is about making the listener feel and move, not about "...that's not English..". Some of my greatest, lyrical inspirators (like Bruce Springsteen) will write lyrics that not all follow what most people think is "English". Focus on the feelings and impact. Also, in order to delay coming across as old and angry............take a cup of tea and walk instead:-) Cheers Jonas
I don't claim to be an English professor, but I am a lyricist. I have written thousands of jingles and songs over the course of my lifetime. It's funny because I always find myself jumping up from the sofa & screaming at the TV, " RIGHT JUSTIN! YOU ARE SO RIGHT! " All these HALF rhymes & the constant murdering of the English language is maddening. With all the words in our language to choose from, WHY , for God's sake "CRAZY & BABY" ????? Oh and by the way, that EXTREME song that I watched you review that had the phrase "Rebel rousers " , while you were trying to imagine what they would or should rhyme with it, I was shouting at the screen "SKIN TIGHT TROUSERS" . It could HAVE been , not OF BEEN, my hormones working overtime just watching that video 🤣. Nuno is pretty 🔥🔥🔥 I LOVE your reviews on songs and bands, and I imagine you are a blast to write with. If you ever get down to Memphis Tennessee, and need a walking rhyme dictionary, or need to find a great vegan eatery, look me up. 😂 You bring a smile to my face everyday!
"Should of" is most definitely grammatically incorrect, but Oli Sykes has regularly used more colloquial phrases/pronunciations in his lyrics, coming from Yorkshire. There's several other examples in his lyrics if you keep an eye out for them.
this being the heaviest thing he's heard from bmth... he really should take a step back and give their older stuff a listen just to see their sound change
Justin, the schools don't make the kids read anymore, and they certainly don't make them read legit literature and poetry. The forcibly well-read, heavily allusive and referential nature of rocknroll circa 1965-2000 may be over (and grammar may be the least of our losses).
in the middle of watching and heard you say it’s the heaviest you’ve heard them done! Check out the song Chelsea Smile from ‘08, or if you’re daring their record from ‘06! they started a lot different than where they are now
I never noticed the should have known vs should have known lyric as I’m deep into the music of the song, maybe it’s a northern thing as they’re from Sheffield?
That was Marshall Applewhite leader of the Heavens Gate Cult .. They ate the apple sauce spiked with copious amounts of good ol' phenabarbatol and a shot of vodka and off to the space ship they sailed away to follow the Hale Bop Comet Streaking across the universe .. I kind of speak as if i was actually there ? Or was I ? 😊 Great Show Mate !! 👍Hmmmm? 😅
BMTH are so understated in the general ether of "music", they have only ever done sunday afternoon at glastonbury and they blew my socks off and one of the best live bands i've seen, they're still huge but they deserve to be bigger
I went to see BMTH last night in Dublin. It's interesting to see you clutching your pearls over a " catastrophic " grammatical error after seeing them deliver an incredible set list and show to a packed arena. It puts this video in perspective.
I always got hung up on another of their songs, 'True friends' with the lyrics, "I wouldn't hold my breath if I was you". Everytime I hear I think, "shouldnt it be were?" haha. still good songs tho
so i never really was much of BMTH fan growing up, then last year i saw them at download and they absolutely blew me away. Probably the best headliner ive ever seen at download in terms of the stage production and performance.
"You should of known" *Reactor tears commence "This is gonna end in tears" I believe that because that the context of full statement not only describes, but induces, what the writer intended, the grammar is poetically correct.
Justin must have a real bone to pick with these guys lol. The passive aggression hits like a mouth full of wasabi. 🤣 Tbh I agree with most of this - the song is commercialized whitebread and generic af, lyrics prob ghostwritten by an angsty 8th grader, and they look like a Balenciaga ad. But knocking on them for wearing costumes? Coming from the frontman of The Darkness? “Don’t shit where you eat” comes to mind lol. Also amusing how he will commonly refer to something like an everyday 3-chord part in other reactions as “wow that’s really cool love that”, and does the same thing here, but utterly shits all over it instead. 😭 Nothing against Justin personally - I do enjoy some of his content - but I can’t help but say this came off a little petty and cringe. Like it was less about critiquing the music/band, and more about taking any opportunity to mock and criticize. I stopped watching most of his song reactions bcs they lost a lot of their authenticity to me. Seems he’s always either blowing smoke… or this. To the point it made me wonder if any of this is more “paid” promotion vs an honest, objective take. This video didn’t exactly persuade me otherwise. 💀
Oli fucking kills it in this song. When he is singing the parts "nobody loves you like i love you" and "come here and give me a hug" it honestly feels like he is pulling you into a comfortable hug like its all alright like a manipulative cult leader would.. Brilliant song best so far off next gen

is "should've" acceptable?
Yes
Yes, because it’s a contraction of “should have”.
That is the correct lyric. The caption on this video messed up.
part of the reason they might have less synth/electronic sounds throughout is because the unfortunately they parted ways with one of the members who was typically on keys. He was also a big part of production and writing with oli for a while. it seems like it's all on good terms but I could hear a clear difference in sound with Jordan Fish being gone now. still a kickass song tho.
I love you're reactions. Your justified in being annoyed by the bad English. They should of caught those errors. :)
I think he's saying 'should've' but using 'of' instead of 'have' is pretty common in the area that Oli is from. I'm from that area and people at my work still do it and they're older 😂
"Should of" is like one of my biggest pet peeves. It physically makes me cringe when I read it.
That"of"instead of"have"has been pissin me off for years too,it easily gives away the age of the person who made the lyric video.
Excuse me- where is Davd Hasselhof? Where's he gone?
Offical lyrics
But you should've known that this was gonna end in tears
I believe it was the video editor who fucked up 😂
the original lyrics is: "Nobody loves you like I love you
Oh, my dear
But you should've known
That this was gonna end in tears"
so it could be that someone or the AI used to generate the video didn't get it and mistook 😆 love to see you breakout on that error 😆
maybe english is not the primary language of the person who made the video idk
@Hit_me_Up_The_Justin_Hawkins ah ah ah it would be a pleasure even though I'd have some problems fully understand you because my English listening skill is definitely far from perfect😵
Dear Justin,
From one middleaged rock-songwriter to another (I'm 53 and writing the songs for my rockband, Reverb Poets, over here in Copenhagen, Denmark):
I don't think grammar is in any way important in music. Music is about making the listener feel and move, not about "...that's not English..". Some of my greatest, lyrical inspirators (like Bruce Springsteen) will write lyrics that not all follow what most people think is "English". Focus on the feelings and impact. Also, in order to delay coming across as old and angry............take a cup of tea and walk instead:-)
Cheers
Jonas
Just the right amount of snark. I can always count on you! 😅
They are not that young either, they are between 36 and 37 years old. The band has existed since 2004.
The “of” / “have” debate honestly pisses me off too. So glad I’m not alone!!
"Should of" is most definitely grammatically incorrect, but Oli Sykes has regularly used more colloquial phrases/pronunciations in his lyrics, coming from Yorkshire. There's several other examples in his lyrics if you keep an eye out for them.
that said, I think he's probably just singing "should've" and the lyric video is wrong haha
Saw them sing this live on Saturday at the O2, bloody amazing gig, other bands need to take note of their stage shows, incredible
this being the heaviest thing he's heard from bmth... he really should take a step back and give their older stuff a listen just to see their sound change
Justin, the schools don't make the kids read anymore, and they certainly don't make them read legit literature and poetry. The forcibly well-read, heavily allusive and referential nature of rocknroll circa 1965-2000 may be over (and grammar may be the least of our losses).
Jim Jones. And it was Flavor-Aid, not kool-aid
Nope
in the middle of watching and heard you say it’s the heaviest you’ve heard them done! Check out the song Chelsea Smile from ‘08, or if you’re daring their record from ‘06! they started a lot different than where they are now
They should have known to check for that...
Their streaming and attendance numbers say to opposite.
@@jelcoleys8087seriously why lie?
they have around 13 million listeners on spotify... they're currently larger than slipknot.@@wammyburger
Yup. Subjunctive.
I wonder if people get the “should have” wrong because when it’s shortened to “should’ve” it can sound similar to “should of”
Hmm, shouty with bad grammar. 'Should of' annoys me almost as much as 'very unique'.
It surprises me that so many native English speakers use should/could/would of. And it's super irritating.
so i never really was much of BMTH fan growing up, then last year i saw them at download and they absolutely blew me away. Probably the best headliner ive ever seen at download in terms of the stage production and performance.
"You should of known"
*Reactor tears commence
"This is gonna end in tears"
I believe that because that the context of full statement not only describes, but induces, what the writer intended, the grammar is poetically correct.
Justin must have a real bone to pick with these guys lol. The passive aggression hits like a mouth full of wasabi. 🤣
Tbh I agree with most of this - the song is commercialized whitebread and generic af, lyrics prob ghostwritten by an angsty 8th grader, and they look like a Balenciaga ad.
Nothing against Justin personally - I do enjoy some of his content - but I can’t help but say this came off a little petty and cringe.
Justin Fucking Hawkins Rides Againnnnnnnnnnn! 🎸🎶🎶🎶🎶
is this officially released by them or their label? Is it possible the lyric video probably got the contraction "should've" improperly listed as "should of"????
