I have an interesting shortcut to a similar result. Strip the varnish, use White shoe polish and a cotton cloth. Spread and buff. It's easier to get an even finish than with bleach or TSP, and it's less toxic. Seal with either wax or a clear varnish. The show polish won't damage the veneer. When I was young, single and broke, I salvaged a dining table and used this technique. It looked great. I ended up selling it for 350 dollars, which was a lot back in 1982. It was art deco style did not work with the decor of my first serious relationship. All you need is a good eye for a diamond in the rough and a little imagination. Sometimes you can find better quality of furniture on the trash heap than the expensive crap they sell at Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware.

Katcha! - Here is one to try... Ebonize a piece of carved oak furniture! Soak steel wool in white vinegar then apply the mixture to a nice carved oak that you have removed (stripped off) the finish from. I yields a very beautiful , very dark (almost black), natural looking finish! By the way we are a Dixie Belle retailer on the Jersey Shore and we really enjoy your videos. We tell all our customers about you - to watch your videos for great tips on painting with Dixie Belle (and painting in general). Your videos are an art in themselves! Thank you for your great work, you make watching really fun!

I got a lot of information from your tutorial. I'm working on an old oak washstand that I'm going to bleach and seal to use as a bedside table. Once the yellow and orange is gone, the grain will be beautiful. At my age, it is a definite chore, but I'm in no hurry! Thank you once again for showing us how to do stuff!

Technically, with it being a digital video, you can just position the slider to go back to the beginning and see, what it looked like.😇 But I know what you mean. I was waiting for a before and after, too. It's more satisfying and rounds up the video, if you see side by side where you started and where you ended up. Isn't it funny that we'd rather have the creator take the extra step and edit that in instead if just rewinding?

I have tables from the 1950's or possibly 1940's that ate 'Bleached' woodened tables with heavy varnish. Because of their age, the varnish has yellowed and marks have appeared due to many moves and age. I have always wanted to refinish them yet had no idea and present day wood refinishing furniture people around me do not know how to do this process. This is the first time I have seen someone do this process and you have inspired me to refinish my tables. Can you or do you have any suggestions to aid me in this process? Thank you. Love your table by the way.

Thank you for showing the bleaching technique. I don't love the gold (that's just personal preference), but the finished piece looks great!

I love every video you give us!! Bleach tecnique es very new for me. But, I have to be honest, to cover the tiles it was a huge mistake for me. I hoped you would think "out of the box", and take advantage about that priceless tiles work. Anyway, i love your works and your sense of humor. Greetings from Montevideo (Uruguay)

That piece would have honestly looked great stained dark dark almost black. You did a great job either way looks very nice. My wife has been giving me projects on old 1960s furniture and some of it needs to be painted to look more up to date. But there are a few pieces that are going to take a good 40 hours to sand down and restain. I've been watching a bunch of your videos I never painted furniture I always sanded repaired and restained which takes a significant amount of time

What about painting on melamine or laminate. Would love some ideas.

I sanded my butcher block laminate counter tops really well then gave them a matte black paint coating to which I added white, pale gray sea sponged accents (I had a black piece of genuine marble to copy) then very thin veins to emulate marble. After a first coat of Varathane Liquid plastic (now called polyurethane) I sanded with varying degrees of sand paper then added more veining and another coat of Varathane. I did this 6 times, omitting the new veins the last three times. The more coats you add and sand in between, the deeper the veining helping to give the illusion of genuine marble. This was a technique I learned in the theatre called trompe l’oeil or “fool the eye”.......
