      Our OES is super chill. Very calm for the most part. She does get a little barky when excited.
      And very very attached to her people. She’s 2 and never runs off from her people like our last high energy dog (catahoula leopard dog). She has to be wherever we are.
      But her coat does take daily brushing and regular trimming of paws and bottom. We trim her down a couple times a year to stay cooler... and have less brushing.

    When I lived in England years ago I had a neighbor in a typical terrace house (think small townhouse) who had three Old English and all on the large side. Since they didn't have any kids, the dogs used to love coming over and playing with ours in the front garden. Are they really as stubborn as people claim?

    • @marenjones6665
      @marenjones6665 3 месяца назад

      @Nil-tz6gy They're not as eager-to-please as a lot of other herding breeds, but they're definitely not stubborn like a bloodhound or beagle. They tend to be very smart and very patient, and they like to take a bit to figure out new things, rather than charging in or running away immediately. This might be because they can't see much, on account of the fluf.
      Consider the blanket test, what was, for a long time, the standard test for doggie intelligence. You throw a blanket over a dog, and see how long it takes for them to pull it off. Most dogs try to pull the blanket off right away, but an OES probably won't. They might look around a bit, try to figure out what is going on, listen to the humans laughing at them, and so on, before trying to escape. Or, if they're not bothered, they may just lay there, because it really isn't that much heavier than their natural coat. They may even realize that this is funny and start playing. There's a lot of variety in their personality.

We have to try and put the pieces together with what the owner says, we give them options to choose from on how they want to tackle whatever their animal is suffering with. I grew up with an Old English Sheepdog!
    Loyal, loving, wonderful, funny dog! She was the best. I'd spend hours brushing all that hair. And they do get matted easily.
    When she got older, we kept her groomed with a short cut.
    And they never really walk....always a happy trot. ☺️❤️

    This makes me think of another Old English Sheepdog, immortalized by The Beatles in their song "Martha My Dear". Martha was Paul McCartney's family dog for many years & can be seen in quite a few photos from those halcyon days. She was obviously a very good girl & deserved being the much loved subject of a famous song.

      In the 80s, Paul McCartney released a live album called "Paul Is Live" and on the cover was Ace, a relative of Martha's. In the 90s, when the three surviving members of the Beatles reunited create new music, the image of a running Old English Sheepdog appear in the music video of "Free As A Bird".

    She reminds me of a pair of them when I was a kid. Every spring they'd be shaved down, the hair would be kept thin/short until near the end of summer when the owners let it grow again. Their idea was that it was good for them so they'd be warm in winter and not too warm in summer. No idea if that's true, but it was my introduction to the fact that there was such a thing as a dog groomer :)
    She's adorable and looks like a puppy at the end!

    My grandmother rescued an old English sheepdog when I was a baby. She had 6 grandchildren 0-4 years old and Monty (sheepdog) had his hands full with us. He bumped between us if we got into fights. He herded us going to the park. He pulled us back if we decided to explore the fireplace. He took his job as Nanny's helper very seriously!

    ...you are absolutely right - if you've had an old english sheepdog you will feel that he/she was the best dog you've ever had!!...my locky passed away about 3 yrs ago & i am still grieving...i've been fortunate enuff to have lived with & loved several dogs but none have touched my heart so deeply as locky has...i have fostered for approx 11 yrs now -8 of them with locky...he opened his heart & home to these unfortunate dogs & shared all he had, i.e. his mom, canine brother, kitties, toys, bed, etc...when he was about 3 yrs old we discovered that he seemed to enjoy the older dogs so we started to foster the senior dogs...there's quite a number of those that locky & i lost our hearts over & mourned when they passed but he was always ready to take on the next one (me too)....i'm sorry to ramble on but i could talk bout my lockyboy all day...of all the dogs that i have loved & lost, locky has affected me the most & i have never mourned this deeply...someday, i will love & live with another sheepdog...my current foster needs to be an only dog so it may be awhile before that happens....again sorry to ramble but when i saw roxy, i just had to comment...locky was basically a calm dog but had his energetic times,,..he was the best behaved - he would respond to the tone of my voice & even body gestures...sorry, i am going to stop...

    I had an Old English sheepdog, she passed away 2 years ago at the age of 13 years old. The whole family still miss her every single day. And all that was said in the video is true. Best breed ever, amazing with children, and the separation anxiety was real! She was with me 24/7, unless I had to go for a trip. She knew all her commands in 3 languages: french, english and sing language. And that is actually how we found out during the last year that she became deaf. After she passed a friend got me a painting saying: Everyone has a guardian angel, but the lucky one have a bobtail!
