Thanks for your continued support to the M4/3 Panasonic user community. You just don't give up do you? 😁 I find AFC on the GH5 is lens dependent as well. No one setting works for two different lenses and some lenses are just better. It therefore comes down to a game of knowing your lenses. The sensitivity setting does the trick mostly as that tells the camera how often to reacquire focus when there is a change in the distance of the subject. To be honest even before the 2.6 firmware update, with all the reviews and reviewers in RUclips I have watched (I have seen dozens by now) you are the only one I see using and depending on the AFC on the M4/3 Panasonic cameras and actually getting good and repeatable results.. that speaks volumes to your expertise and knowledge with the system. I have been playing with the AFC on the GH5 since the update and I find it did improve for me with my Canon adapted lens.. and yes the results are repeatable now. No longer do I need to to the 179d shunter angle hack.. In Fact it doesn't seem to make a difference anymore in a good way. Still it's not the type of AFC to be used for jumping in and out of frame but it seems to handle these types of use okay now.
The GH5 is a fantastic camera that has functions found on larger and more expensive cameras. I would also like Panasonic to make a firmware to solve the auto focus problem. I have been using this camera for 4 years and I still haven't used all of its features. Greetings from Brazil, Shane.
4:11 I think I ruined the fn3 in the settings of the fn3 button. When I press fn3 button it doesn't respond also when I press fn3 button for a long time is not responding & not give me to change the function of the button. How can the Fn3 button be restored like the first time?
Try a full camera reset and see how it goes. You can back your settings up via SD card before hand if you want a quick way to put it all back if it doesn't help.
Thanks. I'll try this. I can't get AF to work at all in movie mode unless I'm in P or AV mode. Touch screen doesn't even work in movie mode unless I'm in P or AV mode.
I had no idea Olympus added phase detect with just a firmware update. I assumed there was needed hardware for that to happen. I'm afraid though that Panasonic would never do it to the old bodies and instead introduce a new camera (GH6?) with phase detect so they could make more money off the hardware sales. Would be a shame to us existing GH5(s) owners.
Having some trouble even getting started. The camera is in movie mode, but when I push fn3 no autofocus settings pop up. Instead, a slightly opaque gray outline appears on the edges of the screen and no text appears. Any help would be appreciated, I'm about ready to explode.
Thanks so much. i will be testing it on my channel this weekend when I record. I am very animated, use my hands a lot will this work. or any other tips?
Question, is that filter you are using on the lens? if so what is the filter? I find it's impossible for me to use the GH5 with that lens at anything below 16.f without it being completely blown out.
Great video, no it’s not perfect but it is usable, I always shoot auto focus now and have very little waste footage, let’s be honest if your running 2 cameras you got to be really unlucky if they both go out of focus at the same time, just edit to the second angle for a couple of seconds. Not got the GH5s yet but the more I watch the more I think it’s on it’s way. Interesting comment you made in another video that you thought the image from the GH5s was better than the new BGH1 box camera, can you elaborate or point me in the direction of your source video, I was thinking about getting that but maybe I need to do some more homework. Have to say there is not many videos on the BGH1 which surprises me. Anyway thank you and carry on!
I've got a GH5s, and I have an autofocus setting/workflow that works nicely for me. Trouble is, I have not figured out how to save the "Custom Multi" AF Area settings in my profile. Every time I switch the camera off and then back on again, AF has gone back to "255 Area" etc. How can I save these settings without having to go through the menu to reconfigure it every time?
and now in January 2024... shall we still look into the GH5S or shall we let it go for the G9 ll and forward... I just found a second-hand GH5S for about 1200 ... but the G9 ll will be another 1000 dollars to add.. is it worth it if I want to start professional work online this year making a film, and film myself as an actor as well to take the cheaper choice or is the G9 ll the right investment or is it just a bypass camera to the GH7 that maybe come in October and I am better off with the GH5S? .... wanna make monologues as an actor but in outside settings, like public or nature settings and have a few acting blocks to move from a background to a foreground talking to the camera or to other characters outside of the camera that we never see... Of course, I will not make much money, most likely none, as a start on this, but to learn and to start to produce on my own, I need to start right... so I got the GH3 and three lenses and feel is time to upgrade my gear... what in 2024 is the right one to get started on? thanks!
6:10 AF Near has nothing to do with that. For AF near to work you have to hold the button down and what it does is the same as holding the shutter button half way. So if no one keeps holding the button it does nothing. Even with all the video settings that button will start hunting frantically and stop once you release. It's purpose is to focus Near.. since the shutter button is both near and far. Once you focus to the near object you release and either take a still or let the AFC start AFocusing, which it can still shift focus to far. The Lock word is for exposure and even with exposure you have to hold the button down. It's for you to point the camera to whatever, get an auto exposure for it and move your camera to something else without having the exposure change, once you release the exposure will start adapting to whatever you point at (if you are shooting with auto exposure settings). Let's say your 1 area box is on a tall candle and tons of background. The shutter button is random, can't guarantee it will pick the candle the AF Near though will AF on the candle once. Once you release it will do whatever your AF dial is set at.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy You mean to press the display button for the quick explanation in the menu? I did it, it says "Auto focus shifts from the current focus position to the foreground enabling easier focus on a near subject." For this to happen you must press and hold the "AF/AE Lock", it's not changing the behavior of AFS/AFF or AFC dial setting. I insist... try it again.
Great video Shane, awesome work. With the advent of the GH5s 2.0 firmware update, are you going to make a video detailing what favourite settings you choose for autofocus on the GH5s with the new update? Would be curious to hear what you think of the new animal/human detect AF vs 1-area. Also just wondering if you could possibly make a video on using the Ninja V with the GH5s in the future -- would love to watch a how-to vid on recording RAW with the GH5s.
Good video Shane!!! Thumbs up my friend 👍👍👍
Thanks, Peter! Hope you are well mate :)
Thanks!
Wow, NMMatt! Thank you so much mate! If you have any questions just reply here.

I love this camera and when it's in focus it is as good as anything. Thanks for the tips.

Thanks for the informative tutorial! Just landed a pre-owned GH5s. Loving it so far.
Thank you so much for this effort. G9/GH5s here.
Outstanding cams with Sigma primes. I don't need anything more; just need to learn to use them.
Extremely useful - thank you. A noticable improvement. Wise man!
Great video again Shane. Thanks for being my gh5s oracle! Quick question please mate.... Why did you choose AFS over AFC ? TIA!
It makes no difference in video mode.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy gotcha. Thanks!
Did you try the GH5s 1Area plus human detection? I’m testing all the modes now and it seems to be hit or miss too unfortunately
This is accurate with gh5 and gh5s. Thanks for sharing. If the gh5/s af was like dpaf they would still be selling out imho
Exactly! Panasonic is basically shooting themselves in the foot for not adapting a better video focus system through firmware.
thanks man! i have exact same setup and the pulsing... 😂
Footage looks great. No complaints here
Thanks 🙏🏻
Really helpful mate !

What speed an sensitivity would you suggest for shooting a subject like a bride walking the isle toward you.
Great videos, would this apply to the g9? I just got one for £495 and am watching your lens videos

Hardware is needed, it was just not active before the firmware upgrade. Still no excuse for Panasonic though.. ;)
This has not (now with the gh6 performance) aged well
I cannot get into AF customs settings video. What should i change in the settings to be able to change the autofocus sensitivity?
Great stuff, thank you!
Great video mate, very informative! It's sort of the same story also with the Lumix S, there are work around to let the AF work well.
Valid and solid settings. Kinda counteracts the overall "Panasonic AFC-sucks" anti-hype out there. Good one 👍

Try Aperture priority mode.
cool sunglasses! what is the name of?
Your footage from GH5s / Leica 12mm f1.4 combination is impressive.
Thank you! I just recently got the 12mm and I am really loving the results so far :)
Are you going to readjust your settings after the firmware update of the body (and probably also lenses)?
My settings with the new firmware are the same. I have a new video uploading now :)

It should remember the settings each time you restart the camera unless you are unplugging the battery without shutting it down from the power switch.
Hey, aren't you the guy who convinced me to get a Fender Twin Reverb Tone Master?
Possibly 🤣
Thx bro.

Thanks, this helped :-)
One area seems to work most reliably for sure.
Excellent

Focus on the first shot of your vidio is on your ear, not on your eye.
If one plans to use AF should never buy GH5. It just does not work.
