How Bad Could It Be? Servicing My Ferrari F12 - THE COSTS & RESULTS

- In today's video, @JayEmmOnCars reports on the results of the recent F12 Service. The first time this car has been looked at in his ownership, this was a nerve-wracking experience and though there were very few "BIG" issues, maintaining a 740BHP Italian supercar is never cheap - but how bad was it?

£930.73p for a loose screw?
£120 for wiper blades?
£93 for win washer cover?
£200 for tightening a few coolant hoses?
Oil filter £97?
£5300 to fix brake ducts?
You need another garage mate.
Or a therapist...
I wouldn't have bothered with the brake ducts, as mentioned they only get too hot when you are hammering them constantly on a track day so they weren't an issue if you plan to use the car for road use.
win washer cover identical part fiat/ Alfa part on Ebay £4.25. I don't know what's worse Charging £93 or paying £93.
@@checker3694 £93 is also paying some tear-offs for Sainz/Leclerc
@@misme2000 I take my hat of to a company than can charge this and get someone to pay for it, though if I paid that, I would keep it to myself.
@@checker3694 hats… with shirts they do the same thing, less than €20 to make and charge €500 or so. And yes they sell them…
Being a mechanic and knowing what’s involved I find it hilarious how these exotic car manufacturers can charge what they do. It’s like they want the customer to think this is some sort of Alien technology. £850 for 15 litres of fully synthetic oil, an oil and pollen filter and basically a visual health check 😂.
I suppose if you can afford one in the first place this is nothing.
Aston Martin once tried to charge me £100 for changing a cabin air filter. A job that requires literally 5 minutes with nothing more complex than a philips screwdriver and a part that is shared with Mazda that can be bought for £9. They also wanted £300 for a fix to the sat nav screen which takes 25 minutes with £18 of parts.
I did both myself after watching videos on RUclips and never took it back to the main dealer again.
Do these main dealer service centres even qualify as mechanics in your opinion?
It seems they are incapable of anything other than swapping old parts for new with the aid of a laptop and charging grossly beyond their skill set.
Even when you can afford it, there is no need to let someone take the complete piss out of you or just illustrate that for all your money… your clearly pretty stupid and that’s what I object to. So I stopped besides I actually value quality engineering and Ferrari are not that special in that category, nice engines, good looks and good sound , but the rest I can pass on.
Ferrari's clientele are people like Arab sheiks. If their Ferrari breaks down, they just throw it away and order another. I find it hilarious that people buy them second, third and fourth hand and expect them to be as well-built and as reliable as a Toyota.
Exactly..utter daylight robbery.
Wiper blades are Denso (OEM supplier to Ferrari) can be bought on line for a lot less than £120. I get my FF serviced at a main dealer for the stamps in the book, plus it's very close in price to a specialist for a standard service. Anything outside that no longer under warranty it goes to a specialist, generally KHPC in Maidstone. Seriously, stop taking your car to a main dealer for "stuff" it's daft. As clearly demostrated by the "Robin" solution for the brake ducts.
Just goes to show the dreadful build quality of what is supposed to be a premium brand. Id expect to pay 5k on a classic Fez but not a modern one. Corrosion this early on is inexcusable.
I agree it's not great and the car should have better paint on it. The corrosion on the bottom of the door is the result of a large stone chip, chipping the paint off and then nobody has treated it allowing salty water to the metal. The front bumper just is absolutely shocking, why is base colour then black on top? Surely it should be the other way around so you aren't left with nasty red chip marks.
If it makes it go fast, modern Ferrari's are very well built. If it doesn't make it go fast....
Lol if you think this is bad then look into the older ones. Still love the brand though, you literally buy the engine and the rest of the car comes with it.
Hell, look at the 458 Spider they used on the Top Gear special in Spain... It literally began to dissolve when they did the speed run on the runway. Still, despite losing every test to the Audi R8 and McLaren 12C, it was the one all three said they'd buy.
What do you expect from a fiat
This is a great example of why joining a club or online chat group is beneficial. There's nothing wrong with always using official service workshops, but so often one can be told of a chap in a shed with a special talent to fix stuff for a massive saving. Main places don't fix things as much because it is easier just to replace.
Especially with cars of today being as what I would call it “fast“ like you would get food or fashion… yes they might be exceptionally well made but the actual engineering of a car seems rather lost idk have a rather fondness to my old k11 micra or current Volvo 740 but you do get a different note of thump when closing the door compared to an current day VAG , product maybe more soulfulness in conversation of being over engineered and or capable of being fixed by the every man ?
This has turned out to be an uni lit piece haha
There are a number of Ferrari indies who will do a better job cheaper than Meridien, but the indies pamper the car and not the customer, you may have to have instant coffee rather than freshly ground coffee beans or orange squeezed by virgin girls thighs.
Twas an honour! Thanks so much for the shoutout, and the insights!
Love the maintenance data-points and commend your dedication to not just fixing squeaks and rattles with the "usual" solution of turning the stereo a bit louder. That said, I have a hard time remembering that the earliest of these could legitimately be 10 years old, that somewhat forgives my knee-jerk of a lot of small stuff wrong with a relatively "new" car. Will continue to follow-with-interest your F12 adventures!
F12 owner here in Australia. The headlights get spider/star cracks in them.I think it maybe the heat here. $5,000 Australian dollars to supply an replace one unit. I am not sure but I think when the led blinker fails the whole unit has to be replaced also.
£93 washer bottle cap , £4.25 fiat/ Lancia part on Ebay
Bought my F12 earlier this year best Ferrari I have ever owned but if anything goes wrong I will fix it myself except for the servicing as I need service history as it is low mileage.
Fantastic! I love refurbishing over replacing 👏 I’ll be interested when you tackle the corrosion as my Aston has a few spots like that. Such a beautiful car 😍 the bonnet goes on forever!
In what dimension do wipers cost £120?
Let me say when I had new wipers blades on my Maserati GranTurismo in 2016 from the main dealer Maranello (Egham) they wanted almost £250 - I kicked off and they quickly reduced it to £150 but still. Same with the price they were charging me for an oil change - I could actually go to the service desk at Maranello and buy the amount of oil needed over the counter for almost 50% cheaper that the workshop was asking - unbelievable!
The moral from Maranello is that the majority of ‘owners’ never check or ask about costs they just pay whatever bill is out in front of them. 🙄
Welcome to the Ferrari dimension. In the states it’s about $100 per blade for the oem ones at the dealer. Sometimes you can find them from a parts supplier for about $60 each. You can use aftermarket blades but risk hitting the bonnet. I tried an aftermarket set that was recommended and removed them and went back to oem as they didn’t sit as low profile as the oem ones.
Lol 😆 🤣 I love that
@@coreycohen6160 Ferrari use Denso wiper blades. Freely available on line you just need to figure out the right size.
@@RedC220 Don’t know if Denso is for older Ferraris but pretty sure on mine the OEM is Bosch according to Aldous. The specific Bosch model doesn’t seem to be available in the states from anyone but Ferrari directly.
£930 for a loose screw, mental. Great video as always, thanks
I honestly think in terms of sanity that’s money well spent. A constant rattle can drive you insane and my old Golf GTI had one that was common on the Mk7. People have had dealerships removing the whole dashboard in some cases to trace the source. Turns out it was the Soundaktor under the bonnet channeling in vibration and luckily I figured it out myself and dampened mine with felt and resolved the rattle.
was the screw loose on the car or presenter ......lol
Entertaining and informative from start to finish. Keep up the good work.
When you said how much the loose glovebox screw 'fix' cost, It gave me a shiver! Absolutely anyone can use simple tools to check if trim bits are loose, if the fittings are accessible.
Thank you for making this video. I especially like the fix of the brake cooling duct. I’ll be sure to reach out if and when I need help with mine. Fingers crossed!
Excellent video as ever. Question: do you have the extended Power Warranty, or any kind of warranty? I'd have thought that the majority of the interior work should have been covered by that. I'm about to pick up my first F12 later this month, trading in my 488GTB, exciting times but have ensured it comes with the warranty!
Love the way the panels don’t line up and you don’t mind showing us, great video
Love the new channel also I hope you had a great Christmas and new year
I just learn to deal with the rattles in an older car. Or try and fix it myself.
Great vid, great content - appreciate the honesty
Do it once, do it right. You've got the right attitude getting these items sorted properly, especially when you're going to hold onto the car.
Great information and interesting presentation as always!
lazy hot starts on my 2016 F12 were solved by installing an antigravity lithium battery. i opted for the bluetooth tracker as well which gives you loads of detail on the charging and battery state. left it sitting for 20 days and had it kick into battery saving mode which requires the remote fob to jump start itself. worked flawlessly. highly recommend.
I love how meticulous JayEmm is as I am the same way. Small things to most ppl are major annoyances to me like a rattle or uneven trim and yes I too will pay whatever it takes to remedy it lol.
Thank you for sharing and giving such a comprehensive breakdown!
I'm actually watching F12's for my next garage princess. I think by the end of '24 they'll be sufficiently "cheap" by comparison to the last few years. I love how this guy drives this thing, a lot, like it's a family wagon.
As a fairly handy person, I'm hopeful I can do much of the maintenance, fluids etc. and small repairs as needed without trips to the dealer if/when I land one of these.
You remind me of Basil Brush for some reason. Especially in that jacket. 🦊
regarding the small piece of leather lifting on the dash:
Maybe its possible to use a hypodermic needle/syringe to inject a small amount of glue underneath to avoid having to completely remove the dash
I think the leather has shrunk so not possible
@@BenB91 ah I thought he had said that after getting the stingray sorted(which had shrunk) there was a spot that had bubbled up
I love it. You don’t talk about your Ferrari(s) being in the shop for a day but rather the last few months. 😂 Commiserations, but somehow I think the bill would be (partially) forgotten about after the first proper drive.
I have to say you have a very pragmatic approach to Ferrari ownership & your F12 is what I consider to be the perfect spec 🙂
Great to see you giving it some beans in Scotland, your making me think back to my month of driving my Porsche in Yorkshire - Northumberland & Scotland this September
That’s why Maranello said to me the bulk of their customers bringing their Maserati and Ferrari into service buy their own oil and leave it in the boot for the dealership to use - saves a fortune
Your Porsche won’t break.
@@l.j.r.8448 It bloody did at the end of April this year (immobiliser fault) & it took Porsche 2 months to fix (thankfully at no cost to me) but I missed the best 2 months of weather of the year to enjoy a convertible Porsche 😑
@@MrOvershoot I feel your pain. I had an uninsured driver turn in front of me a week before my birthday. Car was in the shop for 2 months( July and August).
What surprised me most was corrosion on the door, I thought those days were gone. If it was a 1970's Ferrari I would get it but a car of this age it is shocking. The one part I can relate to that I think is reasonable, is the high labour cost to fix the screw under the dash, people forget it can sometimes take hours to remove everything just to get to a small part, then of course there is the putting it back together. What I find hard to understand is why it was not put together properly in the first place. Bottom line is, these cars are a labour of pocket and for men who like spending money on their cars. The nearest I am prepared to get to a Ferrari is when I used the name as a term to describe a certain lady I used to date many years ago. Gorgeous to look at, but temperamental and expensive to run.
wonderful video James
I was thinking some nicely counter sunk holes in the stuck closed brake flaps and a coat of black spray.
But then I do own a 2013 fiesta on 108'000 miles😇
Regarding the break ducts OUTSTANDING and great to hear they can be rebuilt. Lovely vid thank you.
They are also called brake ducts.
I really enjoyed the way you explain things!
Jay you are a great story teller! Curious, on your 550, is that tint, or am I seeing moisture build up inside the car on the windows? May have an interior leak, like my 04 Passat does in the boot!
1:09 Comic Sans - well played. Subscribed.
Enjoyed that. Just for reference, if the windscreen washer bottle cap breaks again Partsworld-UK will sell you a genuine B805 as featured on the Alpha Romeo 159, the Brera and (my particular favourite given your well articulated opinion of this car) the Fiat 500 Abarth, all for the princely sum of £10.99.
But does it come if a fancy yellow box with a prancing horse?
Even 11 quid is taking the proverbial a bit.
Total admiration in the way you look after these cars but my word giving 900 quid to fix a lose screw is just throwing money and lets not start on 120 quid wipers, Hubnut will be having nightmares for months when he hears that ;)
First time I’ve seen this spin off channel James. Liked and subscribed, thanks for being the best automotive creator on RUclips land
Nice car Jay. Gives me an idea of what I have in store if I want to buy something like this in the near future.
Love the new channel
Another great channel James, even if this episode was a little like the original. The front flap fix was intriguing and how Ferrari paint the front end. I stopped buying these cars once I learned how poorly made some of those electronics and other parts are relative to how much Ferrari want for them. Mass produced cars are frequently better built or at least the same given today many components are shared across the brands. Ferrari best product is its brand.
your statement about the brand is very true Alan. Like James I make use of non main dealer specialists who cancel the piss take metered out by some of the main dealers
My ticker can't take too many more of these bills videos! :)
I love most of their vehicles especially the older ones. It's the little bits of nonsense in the experience, that keep me from jumping in? Great looking and sounding though.
Great video
Surly an independent (AV) for the niggles brake ducts etc and main dealer for the oil change would half the money spent or close to that?
I’ve got this coming next year with my new to me DB9. I’m sure it will be ok 🤞🏻 I love the F12 it would be my dream Ferrari or a 458 .. but after having a v12 you can’t go back!
They saw you coming
Great video 💸🤣🤙🏻🏎
If you want to fix the leather on the dash, grab yourself a syringe, suck up some glue (Patex contact glue is good), clean the tip, jab the leather and squirt a bit of glue. Allow the glue to get tacky, usually about 5 minutes. Then press down on the leather and put something heavy on top (a 5kg bag with sand works well). And Ta Da!!! Job done!
Just the thought that I had! So simple yet totally effective.
What about the gearbox? Haven't you been hit by the infamous sensors? Also, I overcome the slow cranking and alarms by switching it off and back on and off a couple of times. Then finally wait for all the lights to go off, and then crank it up. But I still did get some attitude simply not cranking at all with very hot weather.
Hi James!! Great vid.. really informative!! One question I want to ask is, in general, why are supercars so unreliable? My Toyota doesn't suffer these problems.. and even though Toyota has a reputation for good reliability, why can't supercar makers make their cars reliable? Would love to hear your thoughts!👍🙂
In general they are not unreliable and no more unreliable than other brands. My Maserati was faultless in all the time it was in my ownership. My friends Ferrari 612 was also without any problems apart from normal wear and tear and service costs. So in my experience you do get the odd ‘Friday car’ in all makes
@@peterbest5938 Thanks!!👍🙂
Great video, these brands really abuse a bit on their services prices
Love the wheel colour
I imagine it has a dry sump so has a huge tub of oil under the bonnet. Which also helps to cool it
Correct, the vast majority of Ferraris in the last 30 years have been dry sumped
@@JayEmmOnCars interestingly the Ferrari F136 lump was produced as both dry sump and wet sump configuration.
I do love your content Jame’s. Hilarious that they want £95 for a Fiat washer bottle cap! 😂😂 I’d have it serviced there, for the stamp, and everything else done by specialist.
Yes I have the same washer bottle cap on my Giulietta, it keeps on popping open but what the hell ?
What really scares me about that bill is that nothing serious was involved. However the cost of standard items like the Service as a % of the car value compared to say Audi is easily comparable. Posh cars cost more, that’s just life.
What a beautiful interior!
Corrosion isn't that covered by the manufacturer still, especially when it's been taken care by them, still a bummer as you don't see Fiat's now with a bubbling door.
James, this episode sounds like a brilliantly witty advert for a Toyota Yaris GR...
As a comparison I am about to have a major service (66k) on a gen 2 Panamera 4s. 1700 quid incl. vat
My nerves are jangling as to what else they may find.
Makes your £850 sound like value for money. Apart from the washer bottle cap and fixing the rattle of course 😬
The lack of quality in some areas for a car that is sold at a premium price and the extortionate cost of basic components is quite sad really. Plastic washer screen cover £90, for that price you would expect it to be brass and regardless of the material used you would expect it to last, and is there really any excuse for the dashboard trim to split?
Lire, Drachmen... that was a good one!
I see the 315 on the rear tires, but what did you do on the front? 265? 275? Another youtuber experienced traction control messages in 6th or 7th gear because of the tire width.
I wouldnt have had the rims painted but that's just personal taste. I cannot believe the front end is deteriatimg like that. Jesus Christ. Expensive toys you are playing with my friend.
Interesting look at the running costs of an F12. Since the service costed about as much as my car, I don’t think I’ll be owning one anytime soon XD
Brilliant!!!!
Rudolf’s a genius. He shot my F355 GTS and 348ts as well.
This video should be on the main channel, it would be getting a LOT more views if it did... the second channel doesn't seem to know what it's about, it was meant to be about non car things, but now it's just... More car stuff... while the pizza prank on Jack went on the main... come on, James, make your mind up!
The idea is to try and find a balance - it'll take time. The pizza with Jack was a bit of a promo, to let people know about this - and the idea of the F12 videos being here is they're not necessarily interesting for everyone on the main channel. Plus it helps grow things over here
@@JayEmmOnCars perhaps put the clip of the bit about fixing the ducts on main and let people know about the full video here? Personally, I'd say your fleet updates should be on main, all of us are going to want to see them...
Was the slow start solved with a new cable from the starter motor to the battery? if so, was it a new Ferrari cable or third party. Any specifics would be appreciated. i have that problem on my 2017 F12. Thanks.
Not sure he approved the replacement of that part by Meridian Ferrari - Perhaps better served by a non main dealer
@@peterbest5938 Any chance you can find out. This is a problem for a lot of F12 owners. Any soluction would be appreciated.
@@jerryjones7719 sorry find out what exactly - he approved Meridian changing it or you want the names of reputable non main dealers for Ferrari?
I’m not a Ferrari fan but I love the F12, looks like a classier corvette
I am not a corvette fan, it just looks like a Cizzeta Moderna.
I'm not a Cizzetta Moderna a fan but it looks like a Ferrari F12.
Have you considered putting another year of warranty from ferrari at the same time?
Jeez. How much for new blades?? You couldn’t get them at Halfords ?
What you’ve just described is happening on my Alfa Romeo Giulia, rattle is coming from the passenger (UK) side dash/air vent and door card. Jay or anyone else please tell me there is someone out there that can help me!! Dealer dose not want to know!! Thanks 🙏🏽
Snapped N/S suspension spring?
This is an excellent use of the 2nd channel! I would love more updates and casual daily driving/living content
For leather you need to clean and moisturise it to prevent it going dry and shrinking (it is cow skin),
some of these prices do seem very steep but to be honest if that's "all it takes" to drive a F12 for a whole year and additionally you just have to put fuel in it and that's it, it isn't too bad..
Stick to my 2011 mk 4 mondeo 150k miles going great.only engine problem 3 leaking injector clamps cost £ 240, 49 MPG leak off pipe was £90 of that.
That system of memory for only 10 Times is exactly the same in Fiat, alfas, etc.
Its pretty easy to restore with multiecuscan.
I suspect Ferrari uses the exact same software as Fiat, so i cant seem to understand why it is so expensive. Its literaly a push of a button in the software.
My Subaru has been in the garage for 4 months. Such is life.
I’ve Owned 2 Ferraris f430 and California T it’s part of owning a Ferrari. Thinks of it like as an expense for your “hobby”
I was quoted $26k from Ferrari NA for an exhaust manifold and fuel pump 😅. A local shop did it for $7k
Surely the service light is a software thing remedied with the push of a button
£97 for a plastic washer bottle lid… 😳
Lovely car though
Such a beauty 😍
Whats the build quality like compared to say Audi? Always wondered!
Three of them James !?
THREE !!!
We took our car to a Ferrari dea;er in Cohasset Mass who we consider at least 50 percent cheaper for the same work that you had done. Expensive but a hell of a lot cheaper than what you paid.
congratulations you've climbed to the top of dreams
Corrosion on a car like that? Wow. I heard that their electronics including the battery charging part is prehistoric
I've got to say, the F12 in profile is one of the best looking cars ever...especially in red and gold.
11:38
Personally i would grab a dremel and make them permanently open lol
Looks like a fairly fast financial anchor.
The one loose screw, and 900+ pounds labour to figure it out, you would think the first thing that you do in a rattling glovebox is check the screws.
It wasn't £900 to "figure it out" it was £900 to get to it - you need to disassemble half the dash
Brilliant!!! Forza Ferrari!!!
The dash, glovebox and brake ducts need attention after 10 years on a 100k ferrari.
Pmsl £120 for wipers 🤣🤣🤣 seriously shake your head, a wipe with WD-40 would for fixed them for 3p dear me some people don't deserve money.
On the dash, wouldn't it be easier to remove the windshield to fix the dash?
Could you imagine the cost and risk of such an operation!
@Squeakers Removing the windshield? As long as the windshield is removed without breaking it, I would imagine it would be so much easier, faster, and ultimately cheaper than disassembling a ton of the dash. It might be a different way to go about the repair.
I watched a video once about an Aston Martin owner breaking down his cost of ownership. But he broke it down to the per mile cost. It was over $8 per mile. That should be a law in every country when selling a car what the average per mile cost is. Just my two cents.
