Congrats on the new toy James!
Ideas for what to do with it:
    1. Explain your experience of getting back on the saddle after many years. A prior video you mentioned stats of bikes that have changed (eg traction control systems). I am in a similar life stage (ridden since I was 15. But not in the past ten).
    2. Riding a fast bike slow: can it still be fun at 1/4 the bike’s capability?
    3. Iron butt challenge (long distance ride).
    4. Impractical sports car vs impractical sportbike challenges and hypotheticals (eg, which is best suited for a midlife crisis?; maintenance?)
    5. Track day in a sports car vs track day on a sportbike.
    6. Is wet weather riding all that bad these days with advances in rider aids and gear?
    7. What were the biggest lessons since riding again (if I started over again)?
    8. What cagers can learn from motorcycles (and the other way around).
    9. Thoughts and opinions on EV motorcycles.
    10. How to get more women in the saddle (a known gender gap).
    11. How to get more youths into motorcycles?
    12. Motorcycle culture vs car culture (ie Hooligan vs Hoonigan).
    - Chase

To echo many others.....totally awesome!! Personally I've recently downsized from a 1050 triple to a 500 twin. When I got back to biking around 10 years ago, I realised that my confidence had returned, but I was lacking technique and things could have ended quite messy. I don't know your experience, and you may have already done so, but please consider a professional course, or perhaps the IAM. It was the best thing I did (although I appreciate it has its fair share of critics). Enjoy it and be safe and looking forward to more vids xx

The 890 Duke R may have been a better option to get back into it. They don't call the 1290 the Beast for nothing lol. I had a first gen 1290R them and MT10 (Loved that). I've now downsized to the 890 R.

Have not tried that bike but 180 hp is much more than you need for the road. After about 15 years of racing I paused for a decade before started riding again on the road. I went for the Ducati Supersport S and the power and acceleration is great with 110 hp. On a twisty public road you cannot really use more if you want to retire alive.

As a biker who watches your car content its great to see you branch into bikes, your style works well with bikes imo. I had the same debate Superduke v FTR and ended up on an FTR as the difference in power wasnt an issue for me but the Superduke is a fine thing. I've had 3 KTMs and 3 Husqvarnas they've all had minor issues all sorted promptly by a good dealer. Enjoy

I’ve always been a huge fan of KTMs… the way they ride, the way they sound and the way they feel at full chat (I’ve owned two generations of the 1290 SDR). However, I was sorely disappointed with the gen 2 which I bought brand new. It was the first generation to have the fancy electronics. I held on to for only 3 months. After 3 visits back to the dealer on the back of a recovery truck, I’d had enough. I eventually got a gen 1 without the electronics and I enjoyed that for a few years. I hope yours doesn’t give you as much grief as the gen 2 I had… but seeing that you’ve already had a visit from the KTM’s electrical gremlins, you might just be in for a world of pain. Good luck with her. I’d advise not riding her much on salted/gritted roads in the winter. I think that’s what did the electronics on mine in.

Good to see you on a bike but please be careful, that's a helluva bike to return to with so little recent time in the saddle.
I took my test 18 yrs ago & I did 21k miles on a SV650s in first 18 months before moving upto a fun bike (Morini Corsaro Veloce 1200cc, 140bhp), I think that helped me immensely. All that power & torque can be intimidating, a friend of mine passed their test & bought a Ducati 999, scared themselves early doors and now barely rides at all, whereas I'd ridden the Morini around Germany (inc Nurburgring) within a year of getting it.
Crashes do dent the confidence a bit & being as any rider will come off 2nd best if something goes amiss, it might be helpful to explore what further skills training is available (IAM, RosPA, Police, private trainers etc.).
I now mostly use a Versys 650 as it does all I need & I can service and fix most of it as there isn't too much electrickery. Stil have the Morini but a combination of iffy Italian electrics & lack of spare parts & dealers & my own ill health means it's been off the road since 2022.
    I'll be folllowing with interest.

Great to see you on bikes after enjoying your car content. That’s a great deal and, while the KTM isn’t to my particular taste, a cracking deal in terms of pound per HP performance! As a rider of some 50yrs my only words of advice would be to enjoy the freedom and exhilaration that a bike can give but, (I’m sure you will but be careful out there), with 180hp on tap it’s very easy to arrive at a hazard travelling very quickly. A quick blip of that throttle and you’re travelling at 3 figure speeds so enjoy it but look after your licence and yourself 👍

Has James made a sensible choice by going straight for the Barry Big balls bike? Appreciate he's not new to riding but how much ride time has he had in the last 2 years?

My thoughts too. Would your fist car under those circumstances be an 800bhp supercar?

Don't worry, it's very friendly and easy to ride with the nannies switched on.

Exactly this. It's a very approachable and predictable bike

@@JayEmmAndFriends which just makes you get complacent and let your guard down. Anyway, most bike accidents aren't the biker's fault, you're placing yourself in danger's way the moment you step on it.

@@richardharrold9736leave all the safety stuff on then it won't matter being complacent then. Rain mode with the traction control in the most intrusive setting should make it safer than a 125

Jim Aim great choice of dealer. Book in for a bike safe day with the police you won’t be disappointed. Good luck 👊

Fantastic that you’ve got a bike, it’s lovely. I’ve just got my first bike, which is a Ducati monster 821 and I’m loving it. I thinking of getting in some more bike training from perhaps IAM, rapid training etc. would love to see you do some content on bike skills from someone like rapid training

Next summer do a riding school on a track somewhere. That would generate good interesting content and make you a better rider. Get heated grips if the bike does not already have them. I had an older 1290 Superduke R and loved that bike. Torque monster!

Good choice James - can't go wrong with a V twin.
First thing you need is a radiator guard. Evotech are good. Takes minutes to fit but be careful of the 'ears', the threads in the lugs are very fine and won't take any torque.
After that think about putting it in race shift pattern and fitting a 40 tooth rear sprocket at least. Possibly also go for a 16 tooth front.
Try track throttle map, its how the bike should be. The other throttle maps feel woolly.
Experiment with the preload. Increasing it will make the seat higher which I know you have an issue with but it feels good at 60% or 70% preload, better even that the high auto option.

enjoy Jay and congrats but not a bike choice that I'd consider as too many rider aids to help you "tame it". Back in the day that was your right wrist which, to my mind, is the correct way. Sadly all bikes are like this nowadays so I'd always go more old school myself that draws the line at having ABS and thats it!

Wow, talk about diving into the deep end! You will never want for power! Ride in rain mode for awhile to get acquainted would be my advice, but your no teenager and can apply good judgement. Hopefully. Haha.
