In 2020 I agree we played well and that was definitely our best tournament under southgate but we still didn’t beat anyone good other than Germany. Then the last World Cup we beat no one good and went out to yet another team that was as good as us by playing crap football, drawing to the USA in the group also. The home tournament in 2021 was the only time where we looked very good as a team in all areas of the pitch but we still had lucky draws. This is insane and pathetic from Carragher, we’ve looked absolutely shambolic this whole tournament, sure, it would’ve been nice to shithouse the trophy but that’s what it would’ve been, a shithouse, at no point did we ever look good in ANY of our games, we all knew our luck would run out eventually, it just sucks that they waited until the final game of the tournament to get found out. Now I will give Southgate credit where it’s due, he has transformed the atmosphere around the England team, removed the fear-factor around the England shirt, and reconnected the fans with the team, he’s clearly a nice guy, but he has a ceiling, and that ceiling is below what’s needed to win a trophy, I was right about him 4 years ago when I made up my mind that he wasn’t good enough to win any trophies with England, and, unfortunately I’m proven right once more. Southgate’s done his job, so now it’ll be MUCH easier for the next manager, who only has to worry about implementing a more modern and specific style of play.

It makes me laugh people going on about tactics. People are obsessed with it in terms of Southgate. It’s actually less of a factor at international level, and whilst many may not like the style his tactics produce they can’t say he’s not good tactically. No one who knows what they’re talking about can look at that first half and say it wasn’t good tactically. England completely nullified Spain, who had to resort to aimless ball into the box.
Lapse in concentration on 47 minutes was the killer blow, but wasn’t tactically related. It was a lapse from the defence.

Did very well in the early days, especially at the 2018 WC when England were write offs and we were accepting of 'negative football'. Unlucky in Euro 20, but proved that a winning mentality was now necessary to win anything. Failed to improve upon this however in the past 4 years, or show enough development; even with his sway to more populist decisions. Let another manager add new ideas to develop. It's not about Southgate telling a few players to press and the rest not to, it's about the fact that him and his coaches are poor every which way. Poor squad selection for the tournament, poor organisation, never worked on the press properly. Absolutely clueless when it came to playing players on form or recognising when players are struggling or carrying injuries. Absolutely honour bound to his favourite players, seems to have no clue whatsoever as to what position is, plays an 11 he likes best, not a best team, sticks anyone anywhere on the pitch. No idea how to change and play differently based upon differing opposition. Any time they have ever scored, and taken a lead, they have tended to try to defend that position to the death. No wings, two number 10s behind a striker who receives no crosses and who has no pace to go in the channels or receive a ball over the top.. The Spanish center backs could press very high knowing Kane couldn't go in behind them, and that press also restricted the space for the number 10s and left England hemmed in, with no outball.
He either needed to build the team around Kane, or to have dropped him for Watkins who was more suited to the tournament set up Southgate went with.
Notice our goal - without Watkins high position and pace - their center backs would have been 10/15 yards higher up the pitch and there would have been no space for Palmer's shot from the Saka cut-back. We ONLY score that goal because of Watkins and his position/threat. IF Kane was on the pitch, we don't score that goal.
If you want an epitaph for his England reign:
He took one injured left back to the tournament and when he eventually became available in the semi final, he played him at center back lol.
    Rigid and negative!

its interesting to hear Carra defending Southgate in this way, especially when in his career he massively benefited from having a manager that was a super astute tactician in Rafa Benitez. got them to two CL finals in 2 years (winning one again arguably one of the best club teams ever in the '05 Milan team). if England had a coach who was tactically really good, they'd probably have 3 major international trophies rn. and those are the cold hard facts.

The last twenty years or so, most top seeded International teams give a coach two years to develop a winning trophy team. If they win they stay on, if they don't, they are moved on... This process in reverse sequence has led to Spain, Argentina, Italy, France, Portugal, Germany, Spain, Brazil, Greece all winning something in that time frame... Southgate has had eight years and four tournaments and won the grand total of zero. How long do you keep going on like that? It seems people like Carragher and the FA are quite happy to embrace failure. English football at International level will never get rid of that 'failure is okay' mindset if this carries on by just hoping for the best.

As people say delusional....... Tiredness? The spainsh players have played just as many games as the England players. We have the 3 best players in European leagues the season just gone, Foden, Bellingham and Kane. Also we have the added bonus of the best remaining 23 players in Englands history in a tournament. You cannot blame anybody but the manager. Hes the person who is paid to get the best out of these players, hes had 4 tournaments and he has not learnt from anything in them to improve his tactics. In business if you do not do your job you would be sacked without any compensation. Football is the opposite. None of them live in the real world.

Before and during the games even when we can all see how the team was scrappy, shaky and lucky, everyone was saying how great players were even Foden who played most games but did nothing.
Now that the players lost the “hindsight” is profound which I find interesting bcus it was clear this was a hype job from the outset bcus there were so many team far better than us like Portugal that didn’t get a mention like Spain yet the clamour is a joke

Carragher has a point in what he's saying and being a realist about the managerial position. Nevertheless, Southgate has been a great servant, he's taken us to back to back finals, and a semi all in 6 years. He has also led to the development of a cohesive squad and a better environment for the players. He should probably get a knighthood for his services to the national team.
It's now time for Eddie Howe, or another more experienced manager with less attachments to certain players which may cloud his judgement, to take the reins of the national squad.

The mainstream are a disgrace, if your watching that and saying keep him on then wobble your head. International managers have a shelf life then they go stale. Just look at LÖW who managed Germany from 2006-2021 between 06-16 they reached 4 semi finals, 2 finals and won a World Cup. Then after 16 it went stale and as a result of staying on 2 long it resulted in Germany getting Grouped in the World cup for the first time in 18 and then loosing to England in a knockout game for the first time in 2021. Then he left in a cloud rather than being celebrated. I’m telling you Southgate’s shelf life has expired and we must give whoever it is next a fair crack.
Thanks Gareth for bringing us back to the level considering where we was in 2016 but it’s time to step away and let a better man take the final step.

1 semi, 2 finals and a quarter final. And I just think another man deserves a fair crack at it. Who it is i don’t care I just want fresh ideas, and I want us to play freely. If we was managed by Spain boss Luis De La Fuente we’d have won the euros. But the FA are self serving and up their own arses and nothing will change.

Football is a collective game and what Spain showed is that without the generation of a collective mechanism of attack and defence, it is impossible to face any serious team. Leaving the game under players' free will shouldn't be an acceptable team tactic. Southgate must, not only line up players but also enhance them by the transmission of the best ways to win. Southgate did an incredible job throughout his tenure. 2018 we were in shambles and our expectation was low and he delivered a great tournament. I think the criticism on his playstyle is fair and we have rode our luck, perhaps over delivered considering his tactical ideas. Something isn't clicking with the team regardless if the team say the manager is good. I feel sorry for SG, gave his all player and manager and not quite crossed the line.
I think the bigger question is who will replace him and perhaps who will come in that the fans will accept? I can perhaps only see Pep as a serial winner making fans happy (albeit if there are other good choices available).

The fans criticising Foden really don't understand football, and judging stats only is a modern-day problem. Foden is the ONLY player who wants the ball ALL the time, doesn't hide, wants to play it first time, and can take it in tight spaces off both feet. Surrounding him with players like Rice, Jude and Kane who cannot do that is not his fault. Jude spends so much of the game not showing for it, pointing to the back four to pass it elsewhere, Kane doesn't make any runs behind the low block, Jude cannot play off both feet in tight spaces...watch the game back.
Foden is England's best player and should be the first choice for years to come. Pep knows that too which is why he let Gundegan and Mahrez leave and has built that team around him and Rodri while KDB is always injured. Can you imagine another nation suggesting he be dropped? How can you assist when your striker doesn't get near the box? How can you score when you're played out on the wing and no-one can play the ball to you quickly first time? Foden and Palmer should have the team built around them and any manager worth their suit will do that.

NOT Gareth Southgate or his coaching or tactics. Playing a low block no wningers a slow forward and waiting for individual brilliance to win you games is not being tactically astute and is not the qualities or traits of a top winning manager. Someone like klopp would not have to manage the England team because they already play the way he would want them to play for there club sides. What klopp has is a big enough personality and the authorite within the game to drop any star players he needs to drop to get the right balance in the team and the tactical awareness to make in game decisions at the right moments and uses all the bench at vital times to win games and trophies!
