  • We gave interior designers Mandy Cheng, Erick Garcia, and Noz Nozawa a photo of the same cozy living room-then asked each of them to create a design for it in their particular style, however they pleased. Three artists, one canvas, each bringing something different to the space. See which designer comes closest to creating a living room you wouldn't mind idling the hours away in.

      Devil's advocate here 😅
      Everyone loves this series, obviously!
      I do too.
But having no budget and no limitations takes away from the actual interior design challenge.
The walls, windows, fireplace & ceiling all got changed to quickly and easily.
You can't always take out a window and install a door, or put a fireplace anywhere (especially if it's in front of the moving door).
Take away the buffer from your ceiling will make your home colder & noisy. (Especially when you have upstairs neighbors)
And usually you'll see pipes and electrical wires.
Take these series to the next step and give the INTERIOR designers actual challenges.
Not the easy way out where they can renovate the entire house... walls, doorways & ceilings.
I was just waiting for one of them to tear down the fireplace wall and make it an open living space, cause that's nearly what they can do every design.
Don't make it too easy on them. Make them inspiring to where other people can see what you can design with what you got.

What is warm about that space beyond the windows and the fireplace?
The "chairs" look 100% uncomfortable, as does that concrete floor. No pillows, no blankets, very little fabric anywhere, and hardly any options for lighting to cozy things up.
Do I think the style would fly with some people? Yeah; they'll likely seldom sit in the room, but it would be a nice feather in their cap for gaining credit with their style of friends.

Adored all of the designs- can’t and shan’t pick a favorite! Although… I secretly just want them to mix it up for the heck of it someday. Noz designs something straightforward and utilitarian, Mandy designs something super post modern, and Erick designs something ultra colorful. Just throw us all off haha. Maybe for April 1st :)

as someone who loves to have quirky and unique pieces from different artists, Noz’s really speaks to me the most! sure i might make some slightly different decisions here and there but i love that she’s not afraid to have tons of fun for these videos despite it not necessarily being most people’s taste, while she can obviously tone it down a bit for client work if needed (i’m assuming the images shown during her intro are client work). keep it going girl! 🤩

Erick's design is the best for me, i love the fact that he switched the fireplaces and placed the chair where you could enjoy the view out the window the only thing i'll change is the couch, besides the fact that it feels very spartan, i'm also not a big fan of built in furniture. Mandy's design comes in a close second bcos of how all the colors work together while Noz's came off as chaotic w/o a central theme, i'll find it extremely difficult to focus in such a room and it would just raise my anxiety levels.

My favorite out of the three designs is Mandy's. Although the overall style is not what I would gravitate towards personally, her space feels really warm, inviting, functional and comfortable. All the pieces tie together in a beautiful earthy palette. There's a lot of bold choices, but none of them seem out of place.
Eric's design is closer to my personal aesthetic, but you can tell that there's a couple impractical aspects about the space, although visually it's very beautiful. Hard finishes and colors he chose complete such a calming and elegant palette. Both sitting areas don't seem comfortable enough, fireplace and furniture are interfering with the walkways and I would pick a different chair maybe with more softness and curves rather than spindly legs.
Noz design is not my preference at all because color palette and accessories don't seem cohesive and visually that wall paper all over is just too heavy and busy.

I think Noz's design here was just a compilation of different designers that have caught her fancy. I didn't feel like any of the elements in the room particularly related to other elements. I was disappointed right off the bat when she chose that wallpaper. I suppose the end result overall could be a quirky vibe for the right person.
I loved Erick's vision. I felt that the look was cohesive and made sense for the way I would want to use the space (although I would have turned the day bed around). I can see myself relaxing forever on that wall bench. The stone table next to the daybed seems a little jarring, though. I think it blocks the space and makes it feel less airy.
I enjoyed watching Mandy's room come together. I liked most of her choices at the beginning but now that the video is over and I'm commenting on each space, I can barely remember it, except that it was very traditional and I hated the material she used for those curtains. The other choices had great design elements and I think if this style as being the closest to my vibe of the three but with the finished result, I just wanted to be in Erick's room more.
But I have to remind myself that my reaction to looking at a picture of these rooms and actually being in them are likely to be different.

I totally get and love the whimsical style and artistry Noz uses in her cozy room design. Since I have a lifetime in the antiques world its so cool how she uses the bones of southern Americana ( the colors, the Dutch door, the basic furniture etc) and upgrades it with contemporary artwork like the fireplace, the stone ottomans and imaginative chandelier. Noz’ design is happy, inviting and gregarious with a free flowing expression. I find this so delightful.

  • @fatimaayesh7

Erick's version of the fireplace is such a game changer! But I would rather choose an L-shaped built-in lounging area to maximize comfort and enclose the space to make the room cozier. At first Mandy's looked too dense but her color scheme still looked more tied together than that of Noz. Both of their rooms look warmer than Erick's but I'd still prefer his.
