  • Ink-troducing Saga Saturdays! It's like knife making Tuesday, but for pens! And on a Saturday...you're gonna love it.
    In our first episode, John introduces the pen and what his process has been so far to craft it. There's a ton of challenges that come along with this project, but the fun part is finding a solution for them.
    Enjoy!
    Got something to say about the pen? We wanna hear your thoughts! #writeyoursaga

      Once you get the pen nailed down, any chance you will tackle a mechanical pencil? I have a Pentel Graph Gear 1000 in 0.5, but I would like something better. Something Grimsmo.

    I saw some comments about efficient use of material, and I had the same thought. I was wondering though - could you make two parts out of the same block of material? Picture two clips pointing opposite directions, one with the clip on the top and one on the bottom. You could drill out the center, turn the outside, and then slot it into the two individual parts. Then you'd wind up with one on each spindle. I'm not totally sure how if it would work, but it seems like there is potential. It would definitely be a lot more complicated process, though.

    clicking sounds great, you should knurl the ring in the back and maybe the front part where you hold the pen too.
    feels great and you can push the ring easier.
    the knurling is the part i love the most about my rotring 600 mechanical pencil. and put your logo on the button on the back
    excited to see, how the pen will turn out in the end!

    Damn, I’m obsessed with pens and and was a CAD student and had the idea of using an air hose quick connect mechanism as a pen click mechanism, looks like Grimsmo beat me to it, I hope he doesn’t mind other people using a similar mechanism.....

  • @LizakDominik1988

    That mechanism is so simple yet no one used it on a pen. Clever Mr Grimsmo, very clever.

    Looking awesome! Have you thought about drilling all the way trough to remove most of the material by drilling? Also you could slot the Profil with a small endmill and maybe safe some time. Depending on the remaining wall thickness you could mill around with simultaneous c rotation. Keep it up!

    Looks great John. But the multiple Grimsmo logos on the nose of the pen are overkill. The small logo on the button is cool. A quality pen should have subtle branding.
    You could consider laser engraving the logo on the barrel as an alternative. Much more subtle than any milled logo.
    Can't wait to see where the final design lands. It will be great to be able to purchase a Grimsmo product...as you can't legally carry a knife DownUnder...

  • @devjock
    @devjock 6 лет назад

    My god I just had the epiphany at 11:30. What you need is a c-axis operation that parts off the raw stock you need for making one of those clips, while still being able to re-chuck it after the parting off op.. That's gonna be something else..
    Maybe like a tiny sawzall that comes in while it's being held from both sides, then it ejects the mass stock, then it re-chucks and aligns the part still being held on the tool-side "clamp"?
    That would make it a one-op clip, given that you have your c-axis code in there afterwards.
    So what are you doing in terms of "texture" on the outside of the clip? I'm thinking there's room for some g10-like handle shaping textures (the diamond and Anzo like patterns), but yeah, it could get crazy enough for "greyscale like" halftone drilling, if you can accurately map a coordinate system along the raw flat clip surface.
    And, as an added bonus, you can apply that same method to the pen body itself.
    Interesting stuff man, can't wait to see more pens!

    • @xenonram
      @xenonram 6 лет назад +3

      Geert Perton actually the prices for their knives are quite cheap for what their offering. Relatively, most other custom/semi-custom knives are not as well built and are more expensive. These things are for people who can appreciate 1/5000th inch tolerances. (0.0002") For people who understanding what goes into making a knife like this. It's not a production knife, so of course it's going to be inefficient. Although, for a custom/semi-custom knife, his processes are very efficient. People that don't understand machining, manufacturing, small business, made in America, and bringing a product to market just won't get it. They're happy with a $30 Chinese knife, and don't get how a knife can cost so much. They want to compare it to a factory in China making thousands of knives a day, and you can't. It's like explaining why a MB S65 AMG or Rolex cost so much; especially to someone who has never experienced it. They think, "Why would I spend $200k for a car? It can't be _THAT_ much better than my Lexus."

    • @chyrt
      @chyrt 6 лет назад +1

      I kind of agree, but take a look at the Benchmade 761 Ti. A very nice knife, made in USA. It is half the price of a grimso. I am actually really curious, what factors make it double the price? I understand benchmade makes more, but that sounds like something grimsmo can too.

    • @TjinDeDjen
      @TjinDeDjen 6 лет назад +2

      Geert Perton They can and they do, but the difference lies in attention to detail; grimsmo is a relatively small business, so they can't win on efficiency; but they make up for it with a personal factor and overkill tolerances for a more selected group of knife users/collectors. If you want, you can even choose the materials and finish on your knife. Also, the design itself is worth a lot; If you just want a folding knife: buy any folding knife. If you want specifically the rask or norseman design: you have to invest into a grimsmo. If you think that's not worth it, that's ok; there are enough people who think otherwise.
