Drone Film and Photo awesome work! You deserve a stack more like and subs than you have now I keep recommending your vids in forums where new drone pilots are asking for help with their drone shots and movements. Keep up the awesome work!
Dude! Most people on RUclips only show like 5-10 cinematic drone moves and you've shown 55! Freaking awesome. Appreciate the hard work you put into this and I can't wait to use some of these moves for my next drone reel.
Haha thanks for checking it out! I followed this video up with 16 more moves to close the tutorial here ruclips.net/video/hAWmbeydxeM/видео.html Most of these are pretty basic, and I'm sure you've been using them. And yeap, this was a LOT of work!
miamiaerial That's true! Shooting smooth can be tricky and I've yet to try out Cinematic mode. My recent Discover Edmonton was ALL shot by drone, mostly handheld shots too! Thanks for checking it out!
Hey boss, I just made up those names haha! This video was meant initially as a shotlist for me if I'm short on time but have to shoot some moves in a restricted space. Thanks for watching!
dean jericevic On my first day of shooting, I didn't really plan to make a tutorial. I was just flying around and checking out some moves. Since I couldn't find any comprehensive drone move tutorials, I just ended up making one. I definitely learned more from doing so and I still reference this when out to shoot! Cheers!
Which ones are your favourites? Which ones do you use most frequently? Any moves not on this video that you would like to share? Feel free to pause the video any time. Here are the category timestamps: 1. Reveal 0:05 2. Taking Flight 1:30 3. Pullback 1:53 4. Low Flight 2:36 5. Pass 3:14 6. Heads Up 4:10 7. Crane 4:45 8. Dual 5:59 9. Top-Down 6:28 10. Angle 7:36 11. Strafe 8:13 12. Tripod 8:54 13. Yaw/Pan 9:22 14. Revolve 9:51 15. Sun Shot 10:22
There's only a few I'd be unlikely to use, but mostly because they're similar to other moves. The Winding Up/Down I've been working on a shot from an abandoned boat (as POI and launchpad) in the middle of a river. I start low and gradually work my way up to as high as the drone will fly. The thing I'm trying to work out is expanding my POI circle as I ascend and increasing the speed to match the expanded circle. If I drew it, would look like a tornado. I'll try to put up my latest sloppy version that will be a cool move once I figure it out.
Thank you so much. This is a recent hobby for me, and this is the most useful drone related video I've come across! I have started to try out a handful of these moves on each my newbie trips around town. Perfect video for developing cinematic skills.
You are welcome! I ended up making this video because most tutorials have 5 or 8 moves. Be sure to check out Part 2 with more beginner moves, thanks! This is a pretty old video now and I wish I knew how to color back then haha
Very grateful for this extremely comprehensive collection of drone cinematic techniques. This will come in very handy. The Excel spreadsheet is a great bonus. Cool idea.
It was a ton of work for a solo project. It took me 5 full days of driving around and thinking of how to shoot some sights. It would've been less work if I planned everything before I started shooting, but I only decided to make this into a tutorial video on the 2nd day of shooting. I'm glad you find it useful!
Some of these techniques are made easier with apps like AutoPilot and Vertical Studio, requiring operator to control fewer functions, allowing for more complex moves. I'm trying to figure out how to do exactly that.
macfawlty That's cool, man! I haven't really touched much on preset moves other than POI. I'll try them at some point. Let me know how those apps work for you!
Yeah, I'm pretty excited! I have at least 10 more relatively basic moves to add to this video. If RUclips doesn't fix my 360p issue in a week, I'll probably split this video into two and add those extra ones in.
That would be awesome! I'll be busy in the next few weeks with work but I'm planning out some intermediate drone moves, plus maneuvers to shoot a moving vehicle. If you want, you can pick the 10 you like from this video and I'll trim out the clips for you.
excellent instructional video... loved every minute.. thanks for sharing... will add to my practice shots....I wish Premiere Pro cc 2017 would click as easy as your information....thanks again from sunny Florida ( raining like crazy now, finally ).
Thanks! I closed the tutorial with 16 more cinematic moves, which should be linked in the description or at the end of this video. I'm planning to work on capturing vehicles but I've been very busy lately.
Hey all, I hope this tutorial can help new drone flyers focus on the creative after learning a bit of the technical side from the 55 short clips. It’s my 7th day flying the Mavic (5 of the 7 for this video) and 2nd run with Premiere Pro so feedback is highly appreciated. I'm still waiting on ND filters so there's that.
Just to highlight that with Mavic you can do only a basic color grading. Much more with Phantom 4, and definitively more with Phantom4pro. You can''t do what Yuri Palma or Peter McKinnon do with a Mavic ( but also true that what Palma does it's quite something and complex...not exactly worth for anyone)
May I ask, did you use auto or manual exposure? I am having a hard time setting exposure. Many people say that auto exposure is bad. When I use manual exposure, the ground when I tilt the camera down looks incredibly dark but when I turn down the shutter speed, the horizon with the camera tilted upwards again looks way overexposed. It is really hard to find balance.
When I did these videos, ND filters were unavailable so you'll see some shift in exposure levels. Ideally, you'll have ND filters and set the exposure level yourself. The newer drones also shoot HDR video so you can compare which looks better, manual settings or auto-HDR
So many great shots. Can I ask u (and everyone) do you often control left and right joy stick and camera at the same time. or do you use intel mode to auto pilot and just focus on controlling the camera? what do people generally do?
SX Productions Hey, I have not had the time to play around with the modes outside of POI. I don't have a lot of time to fly my drone so I tend to do everything manually, including takeoff and landing, just so I can practice.
I'm curious why you did not use more conventional cinematic terms. I've never heard anyone use the word stafe when dealing with cinematography, and I found it confusing. Why not dolly left, dolly right, jib up ?
Branson Carlton Hey, I have no background in videography haha! I didn't want to screw the terms up. I play PC shooter games so I use the word strafe. Sorry about the confusion! Thanks for checking it out.
About the actual moves itself. To be fair. Half of them are repeats of the older moves and it all becomes mixed and muddy. They are not stand out different moves. Half of them are just the same old move with a new type of subject. Its like me showing a pull back move with a train. A pull back with a river. A pull back with a tree. How to pull back with a person as a subject. How to a do a dronie move. ALL are one and but the same. If we can could such subtle variations then you could list 1001 moves. Just a blunt observation & feedback.
I tried to look for comprehensive tutorials when I started out early March but I couldn't find any, so I made this! Glad you find it useful! There's an Excel version you can download on the description portion too.
Less Than Media Thanks for checking it out! This was shot in a LOT of places around Edmonton. It took a lot more work just to make sure I was flying legally haha. I recently added 16 more basic moves as well in another video.
Looks like an awesome place! Yeah I understand haha - it is a lot of work to do that near a city. I'll be sure to check out the other video! Great work!
Hi. Great vid. btw, how do you move the gimbal up/down smoothly? when i do mine it kinda softly locks to every angle, in turn the movement is not that smooth? any recommendation i need to change on my settings?
Hey, with the remote controller I try to move it as slow as I can hahah! There's also a setting, I believe, to help slow its speed and for smooth-ish stopping when you let go. On wi-fi connection with your phone/tablet, though, it would be impossible to get any smooth movement.
LifeOfRyan Hey, when I did this video last year I had ordered the filters but they didn't come yet haha. So, I went Auto for these shots. The difference when using filters is HUGE, very apparent in my latest video here ---> ruclips.net/video/jYhQiXaGKRU/видео.html
Aerial Film and Photo still a great video bro! I’m not hating! I need nd filters myself 😂 but make more videos like this! Because I’ve had the mavic 6 months and can’t take good shots for shit
LifeOfRyan I think the sensitivity on the joysticks are not the same throughout, so even with the slowest settings it's hard to not yaw/pan too hard. I try to move my drone pretty slowly and it's still hard to do. What stuff do you like to see?
Hey, I mostly raised up Vibrance on Premiere Pro CC. Spring looks pretty dull most times so I had to get the colors to pop up. Thanks for checking out the video!
N'th DEGREE AERIAL PERSPECTIVES Thanks! I was so happy when I got to 100 subs. For drones and especially drone videography being such a niche hobby, I didn't think people would look up this stuff haha
I can imagine you've put a lot of work into this video, but it literally hurt my eyes. 😵 what did you do with your video-settings?! 😱 that's waaaaaaaay too sharp. also it seems your shutter is "not adjusted" - there's no motion blur. and this pink touch in the whole video. sorry, but couldn't watch it 🙈
Hey, I didn't get my ND filters in this video so I just auto'd everything. Yeah there's a ton of saturation and vibrance but everything was set to -1 including Sharpness. My videos after these ones have the ND filters on, so there's motion blur. Cheers!
Thomas T Thanks for the feedback! I think I oversaturated/vibranced the clips haha. I set sharpness to 0 when shooting here, though I think not having ND filters at that time made for the absence of any soft blurs.
Part II (16 of 71 moves) here at ruclips.net/video/hAWmbeydxeM/видео.html

One of the most useful drone videos ive seen on RUclips. *Applause*
Thanks for stopping by to watch!
For a beginner, this is nothing short of a blessing. Thank u so much. Subscribed.
Poonam. D I'm glad you find it useful! Happy New Year!
the best aerial drone shoots are those where viewers dont anticipate it was shoot with a drone ;-)
miamiaerial That's true! Shooting smooth can be tricky and I've yet to try out Cinematic mode.
My recent Discover Edmonton was ALL shot by drone, mostly handheld shots too! Thanks for checking it out!
I have learned so much from this video.

Phil's Drone Zone I'm grateful that you found it useful! I hope to see you try new moves in your next videos!
That shot at 8:58 for Tripod... breathtaking....
Thanks! I didn't have ND filters yet so my sky is quite over-exposed haha. And thanks for checking it out!
Great job! Thanks for all the hard work adding the subtitles and descriptions. Awesome!
I hope you find them useful! What drone/s do you have?
Thanks a lot for the video!
Thank you for stopping by!
Wow I already do more than half of them didn't know the name! This video is great! Thanx!

You're welcome! You can also download the Excel spreadsheet on the description so you can print out the moves. Cheers!
Very impressive, a well crafted & demonstative video; I leant a lot & no doubt you did in putting it togeather.

jeebs9 I'm glad you find it useful! I'd like my next tutorial to be about moving people/vehicles if enough people are interested in this one.
Aerial Film and Photo pull back is my favorite. I also made this video. ruclips.net/video/sBhJ-2ve_oE/видео.html

So much packed into 10:38, no fluff, just meat. Whoever filmed all these clips must have been freezing their butt off.

Nice work. It all about the shot, so every movement should be slower than you think. More should watch this guide.
Exactly! I'm hoping to get some ND filters soon to help smoothen up my shots a bit more. Thanks for watching!

too much over-sharpening in post
