To be honest, my feeling had been that a bassoon concerto didn't sound very appealing and Rota was a composer I carelessly dismissed. Then I discovered the companion recording to this, the suite from the score by Rota, La Strada ─ in a word, utterly delightful, (alright, two words). Wanting more music from Nino Rota, I turned to this, and was very pleasantly surprised. I found a work that delighted in every aspect. The concerto, more than ably played by Theo Plath, is a sophisticated, gentle, tour de force, full of wit, with interplays between the bassoon and various solo passages from the orchestra ─ one of my favourite ensembles (which deserves to be better known internationally than it is). In summary, a work, a composer and a bassoon player (bassoonist ?) all, fresh discoveries, supported by a great orchestra, that I would recommend to all lovers of music that charms the soul. Thank you to all concerned.

I'm so amazed.. This language is so new to me. The music, is so ¿beautifully strange? .. the bassoon sounds wonderful, as if a some sort of a new instrument suddenly were presented to me, although I've heard the bassoon all my life!
Ein leider viel zu wenig gespieltes Fagottkonzert in einer unglaublich tollen Aufnahme. Es ist schön, daß sich Theo Plath um solche Werke kümmert. Ich hoffe auf eine baldige Aufnahme des Gubaidulina-Konzerts!

Wunderschöne und lebhafte Aufführung dieses ein bisschen parodischen doch perfekt komponierten Konzerts mit bezauberndem Ton des genialen Solofagotts sowie gut vereinigten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen der anderen Instrumente. Der intelligente und ebenso geniale Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Orchester in verschiedenen Tempi und mit künstlerisch kontrollierter Dynamik. Faszinierend vom Anfang bis zum Ende!
" Der intelligente und ebenso geniale Dirigent" das ist kein geringerer als ein Wiener Philharmoniker, der uns Jahr für Jahr am ersten Pult der zweiten Violinen auffällt, stets freundlich lächelnd und sich im Walzer/Polka-Rhythmus bewegend. Christph Koncz !
