I've noticed a trend with Warhammer. When there is a good character or faction, they're thrown into the most horrible situations over and over again. Which, by the laws of writing, makes them loved if they triumph and grimdark if they fail. Win win for GW.

They could just be invading and clearing this galaxy for them to plant something to farm afterwards. Personally, one of the darkest storys in my eyes, was the story of "the little match girl" by Hans Christian Andersen.
It is a very short story, that has no magic or anything in itself, but you immediately come to hope and Sympathyse for the girl and even though you can clearly see, how this story is going and how any hope seems futile, you want this to not be true.
And when you end it, you know that the story is essentially just the fever dream of a starving, freezing little girl in winter, something that can even hit close to home today.
The Daemonculaba is just very bad, because it is a really Bad cliche, that for some reason, to make someone evil, you need to make women suffer the worst fate at their hands.
It just smells of bad writing, when you think about, how wh40k usually manages to avoid or side-step this.

regarding the nids, its a bit more complicated than finding a plot of land and farming it. And secondarily, we dont really know enough about their motives to conclude if they are truly evil.
farming isn't an infinite source of biomatter, its a method of recycling biomatter.
Plants turn light energy, water and CO2 to sugars that can be used to make biological stuff. But they also need lots of other compounds from soil and such to do all that. Animals eat plants and defecate, putting material back into the soil, as well as breathe out CO2, putting carbon back into the air.
its not gaining any material, its just recycling what is already on the planet, using light to provide the energy to allow them to turn stable molecules into unstable ones they can use to make other, more biologically useful molecules.
tyranids cut out the middle man. Devour an entire planet, gain resources.
frankly we dont know *why* they do this.
are they a vanguard, paving the way for another civilisation? their own thing? running for their lives?
    who knows.
Could they just settle down and endlessly recycle their own biomass without hurting anyone? Maybe.
perhaps they abide by the dark forest hypothesis and have concluded to survive all other species must be wiped out before someone malevolent becomes advanced enough to kill them.
    we just dont know.

Tyranids to me feel like something that was made as a bioweapon, it evolved, ate everything in it's origin galaxy and then begun to spread like the plague across the universe and simply follows it's core programming. • @pineutrino
      @pineutrino 2 года назад +5

I’d wondered about Tyranid agriculture many times too, and mostly agree with you here, though wouldn’t call farming *just* recycling biomass. Yes, for the most part it’s the conversion between biomolecule types, though there’s a fair amount of inorganic-to-organic conversion too. Like, suppose a volcano erupts and buries a nearby jungle under a ten-metre layer of ash. Immediately after the eruption, its upper surface is 100% rock. Return in 100,000 years and it’s back to jungle. Most of its new biomass is from atmospheric CO2, no question, but quite a lot is also recycled ex-ash. I’m no expert on 40k’s canon specifics re the nitty-gritty of Tyranid biomatter yum yums, but from memory, every source I’d encountered depicts Tyranids gobbling biomatter and only biomatter. Zero conversion. Multiple times I’d wanted to yell at them “Haven’t you chumps ever heard of agriculture?” Yes if they possessed realistic biophysics it wouldn’t be in 40k, the whole point of 40k is snazzy grimderp fantasies, but let me have my nitpicky fun, dagnabbit. 4:58- That is actually a very interesting subject to debate over, and I really wish that there were more movies and TV shows that would center around this subject, because I personally find it very interesting. You see, I'm a huge lego fan, and over the years, I built many lego mocs of numerous fictional characters through Lego building computer programs, but whenever I choose a new character to add to my building list, I always learn first everything I can about him / her, because not every cool fictional character out there is someone that I can build wholeheartedly, because of them might be genuine a-holes. For example, my latest lego moc was that of Disney's character of Hercules, the main character of one of my favourite movies ever (which I've seen many times), and in the last time I watched it, a few weeks ago, I started to realise that much of Herc's motivation throughout the movie was actually pretty selfish, because he wanted to join the olympians, and being a true hero was the only way for it to happen. Sure, Hercules did saved a lot of people, and he is a very nice person, and he never allowed his fame to turn him into an arrogant, condescending individual, but most of what he did before the final act of the movie was seemingly to serve his own goal, and not out of serving the greater good. So, even though I finished building his model some time ago (it came out great😊), I still sometimes wonder if he really was benevolent from an earlier stage of the movie. Now, something that I learned over the years is that, just because someone is doing something from a selfish reason, it doesn't automatically make them into bad people, because in Hercules' case, his selfish desire to join the gods comes from his long time longing to find a place where he truely belongs, as he felt like an outsider for must of his early life. Wanting to find your place in the world is not an evil desire. It's very humane and understandable to want to find your place. That is why, in conclusion, I believe that, even though he acted selfishly, Hercules was a good person in the movie long before its final act, and even if he really would've just been a glory hound, and he would've allowed his fame to corrupt him, I still think that, in his selfishness, he would've still provided a huge service for the greater good of greece. After all, you don't need to be a good person to be able to kill a vicious monster, or save people in distress. Sure, not every bad people would do it hard, but it doesn't mean that it's beyond their physical capabilities.
To summ it all up, I do think that actions speak louder than words, and that even arrogant people can still provide a service for the greater good, even if their motivations are selfish.

The Imperium being morally anything is kind of a hard sell, because the Imperium is less of a faction in its own right and more like a collective of human factions working for mutual benefits, and even within those factions there are drastically different subfactions- I would much rather fight beside the Lamenters than the Marines Malevolent, and the character of the Catachan Jungle Fighters is very different from that of the Death Korps of Krieg. The Imperium is probably the most fleshed-out and complex faction, because they're humans written by humans, while a lot of the other races have been reduced to planets of hats because humans have a hard time writing aliens, and are therefore much easier to characterize as good or evil.

I have always appreciated 40k and it's presentation of morality as a spectrum rather than a thing of absolutes. True to our own real life human experience as well. People wage war which I can argue as an absolute evil for everyone, but those people fighting have their own reasons and sit in their own moral spectrum according to those beliefs and the society they live that advocates that war.

When Major said "corrupt officials" at 3:40, I related and my mind got shocked a bit. I'm from Hungary. Never would I have thought, that I would be relating to such a thing. Surely not a decade ago.
But nowadays, I'm planning on having a credit card that the government can't stole money from, and distancing myself from the government as much as possible. Thinking on how to save my money. Investment? Gold? Or should I just move a country? For a moment I was shocked, because all that rolled through my mind, and a feeling that I'm being forced out of my own country. My country that I love, went in a decade from "going towards the west", to... a rampant corruption.

My first thought seeing the video title was absolutely the Farsight Enclave. I feel GW can continue making them one of the more "morally good" factions since they're a small splinter faction from one of the smallest races already. That limits how much they can really change the 40K universe. I also like the interesting rub that Farsight himself doesn't really hate the mainline Tau even though they have a bit of a bone to pick with him. He's learned too much but still fights for the Tau people's best interests and safety, even if he has to be demonized by the average non-Farsight Enclave Tau.
That said Farsight himself is based on/said to be be based on Char Aznable from Mobile Suit Gundam (pretty much the main reason Farsight is my boy), and Char was eventually willing to make extraordinarily evil compromises for what he deemed a good cause. So I do wonder how much GW will lean into him being a Char clone if Farsight ever really gets pushed into a corner. It's also pretty telling that the Farsight Enclave is a huge cult of personality based around him. If he was ever killed off or did have his morals compromised I could see the whole faction sliding into morally dubious territory.
All in all, the Farsight Enclave is a super rad little bit of 40K lore. I love the angle, the change of morals from the usual races, etc. But I'm equally glad that it is on such a small scale so that the "grimdarkness" of 40K that we all know and love is in no danger of going away.

What makes 40k compelling is the concept of rage at the dying of the light. Everything else gets kinda lamer in various degrees until we get to the Tau, who are objectively cringe. Morality is no longer a concern to the Imperium of Man because it was taken from them long, long ago.

Part of the trouble here is morality is subjective and often completely different from benevolence. For example you show mercy and forgiveness to a criminal, said criminal goes forward to kill people. Your mercy was an immoral act, by being benevolent you risked the greater whole. The Eldar sacrifice a human world, and save a hundred more in the balance. Small comfort to the sacrificed but it is the moral choice.
