I love that salamanders tend to go home and visit their families whenever possible. Unlike the other legions, they keep their personal link to the rest of humanity. Salamanders are amazing. While their character has shifted a bit, even being flanderized to a degree, loved these guys since the old Index Astartes in a White Dwarf and this quote of Vulkan to the Emperor; "Any man who values life over pride is worthy of my service."

How, or in what way was there character shifted?

    • @fedupN
      @fedupN 11 месяцев назад +111

@@wernerfuhry Initially Vulkan and the Salamanders were smiths, dedicated and humble, with an emphasis on deliberation and slow to act. They even had - 1 Initiative to reflect this way back in the day. There was an almost dwarfiness to them, sans the grudgin.
They weren't vainglorious and did the right thing simply because it was right. In the (2nd I think) war for Armageddon, he humbly ceded command to Dante and even beat the snot out of Marines Malevolent for using refugee camps as lures for Orks and then shelling them.
As the editions rolled on and the Horus Heresy got fleshed out, those elements largely remained, but we get this element of kindness or niceness that begins to overshadow the other elements.
This is largely due to how Vulkan is being portrayed, true, but it shines onto the Salamanders as well.
The right thing became stretched to have elements of suicidal self destructiveness and the ponderousness was reduced.
In some cases, it even meme'd itself to where Vulkan will HUG IT OUT with all.
I don't want to claim it is a HUGE shift and the new stuff is pretty great (the GLOWING RED EYES AND ONYZ SKIN thing is a smidge odd but whatever), simply saying that Vulkan and his Legion are thought of as the NICE ones, before the HUMBLE ones.
TLDR: The initial humility and dedication, while still present, seems to have taken backseat to an idea of them as "nice." Which, I would say, while true, is that they are more "human" than many other Legions.

Probably my favorite story bit of Vulkan was when he was held prisoner in a giant torture maze by Konrad Curze, who said at the end of it was his masterwork thunderhammer that he could use to leave because it had a built-in teleporter in it. After being basically killed repeatedly in the maze Vulkan eventually made it to the end and got his hammer, just for Konrad to come up to say "Lmao psych! The ship's teleporter-proof!" In response Vulkan said "IT'S STILL A HAMMER BITCH!" then proceeded to beat Konrad so fucking brutally he put a hole in the ship and got sucked out.

Vulkan had nothing on but underwear, Curze was in his full Primarch gear AND WEAPONS. With only his bare hand he beat Curze so completely it was hilarious. He also got the power field protecting the warhammer to go down by throwing Curze through the damn force field. That was when Vulkan got the hammer and started dismantling Curze even harder.
Something for everyone to remember, only Big E was physically stronger than Vulkan. When people talk about the best duelists and fighters, there is a reason people don't even put Vulkan on the list. Vulkan is strong enough to rip Primarch armor apart with his bare hands! Yes they would hit him a few times but he would tank the hits then get his hands on their weapon or armor, once that happens it is game over. If Vulkan is in his own armor? Oh boy. To put this in perspective, normal Primarch armor is like a Prius compared to Vulkan's Tank. The boy's armor is chunky is what I am saying here. The other Primarchs wouldn't be able to MOVE if they wore Vulkan's armor.
However, Vulkan didn't like fighting. He liked CREATING. While so many other Primarchs were in their dick measuring contests, Vulkan was at the forge making something.

A core part of why Segmentum Pacifica is so chill is because the Salamanders call it home. They didn't hammer out a giant efficient empire like the Ultramarines, they didn't drive at the Moon, howling away, like the Space Wolves, they just showed up, removed problems, then found out what CAUSED those problems, rooted it out, and made everything better. They took planets that were knocked down, picked them up, and helped build them back, because it was the right thing to do and, in the process, prevented the backlash and rage that otherwise would have existed.

He grinned. "Hope is cruel, isn't it? Yours was false Vulkan."
"You're right," I [Vulkan] conceded, holding up Dawnbringer so he could see it. "I fashioned it as a teleporter, a means to escape even a prison such as this. A segment from The Horus Heresy - Sons of the Forge by Nick Kyme
Sons of Horus are regrouping and resupplying after a recent skirmish with a Salamander patrol
Rayko Solomus had left the pit and was sitting on a ammo crate looking out of the battlements of the north wall. He saw the city ruins on the decaying horizon and found himself unmoved. As he only half-heard the menials toiling below and behind him Solomus wondered how long he has been this way.. dead inside. The rifted feeling, only when he held the torturer's knife, did a moat of true emotion return... and even that had been denied to him. The mechanicum emissary had the drake now.
"He did not scream?" asked Nevok. Stopping to regard Solomus as he loaded a fresh shell into his weapons clip.
"Hmm they certainly can take pain"
Nevok stood sentry, waiting for the Salamanders to come. Sons of Horus stood at arms now, bolters at the ready, a squad of heavy weapons with their sights trained on the skies. Their subterfuge, no longer any use to them. They would fight the Salamanders in open battle. They were bloodied though, a row of dead lay in a makeshift apothecarian, waiting for rank to remove their prodgynoids. Even the survivors had burned and scorched armor.
S: "They are born into it..." said Solomus. "..unto fire and death"
N: Nevok nodded as he slipped in another bolt shell. "Have you seen their bodies? His scars had scars.."
S: Solomus drew his knife, admiring the sharpness of the blade. "He killed Hajuk, Morvek and Ezremas.." he said, counting the legionaries one at the time on his gauntleted fingers. " ..at the same time. He fought them, three against one!"
N: Nevok laughed as he slammed his clip back into his boltgun. "I seriously doubt that! The Drake was a fighter, anyone who is legion could see that, BUT ALL THREE?"
He shook his head and scoffed. "Ezremas alone would have gutted him! These drakes are warm blooded, but they are not like us. They're weak!"
VK: "He did it!" said a voice from behind them. Vosto Kurnan made his way onto the battlements via a metal stair that creaked under his armored weight. "I saw him" he added matter of factly, coming to stand beside the other legionaries.
N: "Then why did you not intervene?!" said Nevok.
VK: "They done themselves enough dishonor without my defeat of the drake making it worse." he said.. "..besides I hated Hajuk, Morvek and Ezremas.."
N: "You hate everyone brother captain.."
VK: "Hmph, true.." Kurnan said lightly and looked descant at Nevok. "But I reserve a special hatred for some. And they aren't weak..." he added. "You never served on Istvan V. You never saw them fight."
N: Nevok looked at them both, nonplussed.. "What!? That was butchery, not service!"
VK: Kurnan drew close. Nevok had his bolter by his side and fully loaded "We HAD them brother... The Ravens were abroad, guerilla fighting even then. The Gorgon and his warriors.. well they were hellbent on Fulgrim. But we had the drakes, surrounded, outnumbered, at the mercy of the high ground and our entrenched artillery. You should have seen the Iron Warriors pummel them.." he shook his head as if remembering the events he was describing in vivid detail. "Any other foe would have died and died fast, and they did..." he said. His voice grew low and menacing "But those drakes refused to yield. They fought even as the bombs rained and their brethren fell in droves. Even when the Gorgon died and when the Lord of Drakes fell soon after.. and when the raven fled they kept on... ..and on. Some had lost limbs, others were impaled or blind. Wounded beyond any reasonable capacity to function... ..even for legionaries..." Kurnan backed off, but his eyes still burned into Nevok's through his retinal lenses. "I heard it said that, ..when you kill one of Guilliman's sons, you make sure he is dead. Vulcan's sons... ..well they just don't die at all..."

He has also been struck with the now infamous “Ultradepression” but he still continues on helping where he can but feeling helpless in his efforts to make a difference because of how fucked the Galaxy is. He feels like the weight of it all crushing his shoulders, and his inability to get back to his sons makes him more anxious. Once he finally reunites with his sons should be an epic “VULKAN LIVES” *stomp stomp* moment but its undercut by the air surrounding Vulkan as he quietly goes to his forge to forge in silence.

I am a Astra Militarum player. Upon discovering that salamanders are possibly the only legion that actually gives a damn about human life is what made me fall in love with the legion. In lore it’s the only legion that would make sense to see them playing on table top with Astra as they actually want to be there to protect them. There’s something so poetic about seeing the most physically intimidating marines be so kinda and gentle with humans and give their life for them. It also gives me the same vibe as George from halo reach, a big machine of war but with a heart of gold. I bought some intercesors just for the sake of painting them as salamanders to fight along with my militarum, even though they play as regular space marines, for me it’s the sake of lore and roleplay is what I would enjoy most of having salamanders in my Astra army. Plus you can’t ever go wrong with flame weapons! 😋

The Night Lords and Salamanders were working on trying to both reconquer the planet from the Eldar Exodites, and re educate the human population who worshipped the Xenos.
Kurze hated how Vulkan was succeeding with kindness where he failed with being an edge lord. So he decided to be petty. He deliberately found the Eldar Child training to be a farseer and through his terror tactics turned her into a Psychic WMD rampaging through the Human settlement. Vulkan had to kill the child to save the population and seeing it was only a child, he felt remorse and regret. Konrad kurze was pointing and laughing like Nelson Muntz at how soft Vulkan was being.

I think in Europe, the word "salamander" is mostly associated with the small lizard-like animals you've shown, the same group that the axolotls belong to. The most "iconic" species are the ones that are jet-black with a sort of yellow "camo" spots.
Very pretty - and you can see the same color pattern on some of the early Salamander marine armor patterns.
The specific species is called the Fire Salamander in English (_Salamander_ _salamander_ is the scientific name*). Supposedly, they're associated with fire in the European folklore, because - as you mentioned - they love to hang out in and under old logs. So when people collected those logs and threw them into fire, a bunch of little slimy guys would pop out and started running for their life. "They must be born of fire!" the people concluded, with the usual insight.
    * the IRL salamanders seem to suffer from the same naming woes that the 40k Space Wolves and Blood Angels do.

It feels weird to actually say this but I see a lot of what I hope others see in me about every good story I see about the salamanders. I am a teacher who loves to create, the patience and fierce protection I have for those I am in charge over is something I would say is up their but not endless. Sallies are my second army and have ballooned into being a large thing for me, but from the moment I heard their lore I knew eventually I'd want some because there's at least a bit of hope in a dark world as long as they have the torch to hold it aloft.
Everyone who plays 40k and their tastes, personality quirks, and their qualities all come out in their armies in ways that are great. I play Necrons striving for apotheosis to save their people, Salamanders defending humanity from the evils of the new night befalling the universe, Space Wolves for the honor and the challenge of each fight, Crimson Fists for how the life if all needs defending when its in our power to do so, and Minotaurs for the strength of unified purpose. Each army I play I have a lore reason to do so and it follows part of me. Its weird to introspect for it, but it allows me to see what draws everyone to their army for those who love it for the long haul.

Here is what I will say I had LOTS of horrid experiences in my area, I think my area just might be a horrid area. But not one person I have met played Salamanders. So... I guess take that as confirmation?

I've always loved Salamders and hello Arthur. Your videos are pretty cool.
    Thanks for making them.
Also, imagine fem-astartes salamanders. You know their snu-snu would be cuddles based.

Great video! I like the chill, layed back, discusion you made with this video. A very serious video about 40k can be tedious and long to say the least. I can´t wait to see you talk about the Death Guard

I have a fun anecdote where one person posted on both the black templar subreddit and salamander's on which to choose. The Salamanders provided a list of valid reasons one might enjoy them, the BT said something along the lines of, "YOU SHOULDN'T NEED CONVINCING TO SERVE IN THE GLORIOUS CRUSADE, OR YOU CAN GO SERVE WITH THE WEAK GRANNY SMITH MARINES"

Other factions when they see a literal child: “hmm… this will make good bait to distract the enemy. But that screaming is annoying, let me just shut it up-“
The salamanders: “fuck the mission! Where’s your family? Let’s get you out of here, child. You are a citizen of the Emperor, you must be protected.”

I to love the jooly green giants. Fun fact, they tend to be larger than marines of other chapters.
Sure their huggable nature is memed on a lot, like a lot a lot.
But I've never seen any marines go from 1 to 100 on the murder you with extreme prodigious scale as fast as the green boys.
The thing people forget is, their all about protecting humanity. And the moment, the second you betray humanity they are as ruthless and blood thrusty as a blood angel fallen to the black rage
And they have a special hate Bonner for the eldar. Especially the dark elder

I 100% am a Salamander stan because of their kindness. I've heard others say "I like this faction because they're vampires in space", or "...they're Vikings in space". Then I see the Salamanders and go, these guys are super nice and care about the people. I vibe with that.
