Mastering BGP On Cisco Routers | Configuring EBGP Multi Hop

By default, BGP says that an External BGP neighbor must be on the same directly attached network as the router. This means the router and the neighbor must be on the same subnet. If you attempt to peer with a neighbor who is not directly connected, the neighbor relationship will not form.
You will hear many people say that BGP has this requirement because the default TTL in the IP packet is 1. It's true that the default TTL for EBGP is 1, but that's not the reason.
With the TTL being 1, the routers could still form a BGP session using their loopbacks. But by default, they cannot. This is because with EBGP, your peer is only going to know about the link that's directly connecting you. It's not going to know about your loopback or any other IP Address you may have.
The solution is to configure EBGP Multi-Hop which is covered in this tutorial.
