Welcome back Nigel, pleased to see you again! Thanks for using one of my images and thanks for the constructive criticism, I’ll treasure it! Thanks again and good luck with a full recovery!
Nigel it is so good to see you back at your desk and not lying in bed. I have missed your weekly vlogs which not only offer really helpful tips but also provide inspiration. Each week I have enjoyed your vlogs due to your positivity. I have missed that the past several weeks as you have been recovering. I have gone back and re-watched my Master Class sessions during your absence. I wish you continued success in your recovery and hope you can get back out in the field soon. It’s great to see you back.
Nigel, very helpful video, thanks to the competition entrants for allowing the critiques. I think Amilie's lupin photo looks more like Tekapo in New Zealand, rather than Iceland.
Oh my gosh Nigel! You're in my prayers sir. I knew you were having back surgery, that rots about the second issue. I am so sorry to hear about your medical troubles. I can't wait to see you back out there helping all of us to become better photographers.
Great video, and an excellent philosophy for beginners and a great refresher for seasoned people alike. At the 25:00 mark with your beach landscape composition, I can see 3 things to consider for the grass: 1) Saturation is too strong, 2) Contrast is too strong, & 3) Exposure is too strong. Placing the ground in its own layer in a DCC & making those 3 adjustments + adding a diffuse glow can make a less distracting, fluffier grass & the viewer is free to prioritize the dramatic sky for a golden combination. The cloud in the central right corner is also a bit too bright imo as well. When post editing nature scenes, I learned that color isolation/desaturation and assigning luminosity are some of the most important things we can do to dramatically improve our results. Love all of your content & look forward to seeing more.
Glad to see you back, Nigel. The winning images from competition were amazing and left me inspired. Many congratulations to all the winners. My personal favorite was one of the commended images, the abstract by Dylan Nardini. The one thing that all the images had in common was the push they all gave me to keep working hard at improving my photography.
Having seen your winners and losers, I am reminded how truly subjective the judgement of other's work can be. All of those non-selected images were amazing.
So WONDERFUL to have you back Nigel. It's like seeing an old friend after a long absence. Congratulations on a very successful landscape photography contest! I'm glad my entries contributed to such an amazing and important cause. The winning images were fantastic...very inspirational as others have pointed out. To be honest it was refreshing to have a contest that was more about photography skills and not about who can push Photoshop editing to the extreme. As usual this video goes right into my playlist to be revisited often with all the great Danson tips. Keep taking it easy and wishing you a complete recovery.
I can relate to your back issues as my wife had major back surgery back in 2000 and now needs to have two fusions and she doesn't want to go through it again. But I keep telling her she can't keep living with the pain as it is only going to get worse. Hope yours works out and well keep you in our "back prayers".
Day by day. Nigel, you are a trooper and I so much appreciate your knowledge and inspiration. I would like to think that your videos are medicine not only for your back but your mind and spirit. They lift me up. Thanks
Great to have you back Nigel and do hope for a full recovery. Excellent video showing what works and what doesn't. A video covering editing as you suggest would go down well. Take care.
Dear Nigel, it's a honor for me having a commended picture in the WLP 2022 and on top that two of my images found its attention in the critique session although not finally shortlisted. Many thanks Nigel for the review and your honest thoughts on that. I can follow all your arguments because honestly I felt somehow the final non-perfection which I couldn't yet identify in those pictures although they are still one of my personal favorites. I really appreciate your comments and agree to the hints you give. Avoiding distraction on the right corner of the "Splash Sunset", pic #2 and also concentrating on left portion in "hailstorm coast" pic #1. I decided on location not to move the camera more left because light was far too bright, outburning and harsh. Cropping is the better way here. Oskar (aka uwafot on the web)
Hi Nigel, over the past couple of weeks i stumbled across your youtube channel and i am really enjoying working my way though your videos. you really have inspired me to get my camera out the bag and get out there. I am a beginner to DSLR photography, my stepdad gave me his old Pentax K-x to start off with which i am enjoying using. I really love your vlogs, your knowledge and expertise of photography. The images you produce and places you visit are incredible. I hope you are recovered and back up on your feet like normal, wish you all the health and happiness for 2023 and beyond and i look forward to more videos. Thanks again Nigel.
Welcome back Nigel. So great to see you again. I have been following you for a number of years and have learned so much. Also signed up for your master classes, you are no doubt the best educator out there in You Tube land. Also love that you run this contest, however could I make a suggestion; man6 of the winners are professional full time photographers. There is really no way I can compete, I don’t have access to epic locations, have a full time job……. You get the idea. How about an Amateur section to the contest, where entries don’t make an income from photography. I really value competitions like this to help improve my craft, it would be fun to compete with other amateurs out there.
Hi Philip, may I also answer that it is not the gorgeous places you have to visit. Sometimes it is just observing and taking the chance on things near you. Although I was shortlisted, commended and now shown in the criticque session, I'm still pure amateur and taking pictures in leisure time because my real fulltime job for financing this hobby must have my full attention. Mostly I'm photographing near my home place in bavaria. Of course it is sometimes more easy to find motivation and scenes during vacation. But the best and for sure hardest training for this is to look around your home and take pictures other will not do. My advice to you is: Just do it and you will improve and also get noticed. All the best, Oskar (aka uwafot on the web)
So glad to hear that you are doing better and back again. Best wishes for a full recovery and the ability to work in the field. Great tips, many of which I have learned and relearned over the years. I am trying to focus more on these elements when composing the shot in the field, trying to see it as a finished print and not just shooting with blind excitement of the moment. Thanks again and best wishes for a full recovery.
Welcome back Nigel, we have missed you. Glad you are slowly on the mend. Great photo's from the Landscape Photography contest & thank you for your hints & tips. Keep up the good work.
So sorry you had to go through the surgeries, the worst is over now! Happy that you are on the mend. Thank you for sharing your work and experience with us.
So glad to see you back on the chair in the office doing your videos. Soon you'll be up in them hills taking the spectacular photos that you amaze us all with!
oh Nigel. Very sorry to hear about your surgeries. Glad things are going well and you are on the mend. Please, I know its hard to not want to come back full steam -but let your body rest. Great job on this video. I love listening to critiques. I learn so much!!!
I am happy to know that you have solved your health problems and can take back control of your life. I wish you all the best. Thanks again for the passion and the advice you put in your videos.
Welcome back Nigel!! It hasn't been the same without you. Been filling the void with your Masterclass 1 which I have thoroughly enjoyed watching. Another very useful video and great to see some of the amazing images from this years competition. Look forward to seeing more of them. thanks also for the help finding a laptop stand for lying down which is also a life saver having a few minor back issues myself.
Have to agree with many of the points you've raised in your critiques. A couple of things I notice very often now especially in landscape photographs are overemphasised and exaggerated often mundane foreground elements, sure you need balance in a photo but why give two thirds of an image over to the foreground when in fact it's often the wider scene or distant elements which are the main points of interest and they can become almost insignificant because the wide angle lens has made them small and appear even more distant, certainly aspects to consider when framing and composing images. Another thing I see very often is complete overall image sharpness front to back often due to focus stacking, this can look false as it's not how our eyes work, it's an important feature to be able to use focussing to help lead the viewers eyes to the important elements of our photographs, the subject and dominant features should often appear sharper otherwise there is a danger our eyes just wander looking for the focal point. Just thought I'd share the above couple of points, cheers.
Good to see you back Nigel. I always enjoy your approach to photography. I kept your in my prayers during your difficult times. Glad you are doing better with the support of your family during your recovery.
Having gone through several back and neck surgeries over the years I can empathize with the pain and suffering you've experienced. I'm truly sorry you've had to go through so much but I'm happy you are recovering so well. Hang in there!
Welcome back Nigel, pleased to hear you are going in the right direction now with you back, fingers crossed for you it keeps going that way and you can get out for some Woodland photography in the next few weeks. Stunning photos from this year's World Landscape Photographer of the Year. Well done to all the winners.
Great to have you back and healing. Excellent analysis on the submitted images, especially for those that nearly but not quite have everything to capture our attention. Keep up the fine work!
Nigel, So good to see you back! Can not wait to see you back out in the field snapping away…. But, most important to get healed up first !!! Great tips as always and looking forward to your future content. Stay safe and get well soon! And as always, keep snapping once yo get back int he saddle so to speak!
wow. i knew you were talking about the surgeries coming up. been out of it myself as of late. started back in may with covid then my mother turned sick and died mid june. really hope youre doing better and continue to heal. please do what they say and be careful going forward my friend!
Glad to have you back. A suggestion. Sometimes we don't have the time to choose time of day or atmosphere, and won't be back to this location again. Could you suggest/show some tips under these difficult situations?
Thank you Nigel, for your insights. Photography speaks a certain language and your points are like a little bit of vocabulary of that language, that one can learn from you. The more I school my eye (like practicing an instrument) the better I can see the language in a photograph. As a photographer we have so many tools (cropping, post, certain lenses etc.) at our disposal which can also ruin it and then we desperately try to improve a photograph by using the wrong ones and sometimes I realize that simple modifications like cutting distractions out, changing your point of view etc. will do better for what you have to tell than you might have thought. Often we try so hard that we don't see that less is a lot more. I hope you recovered from your operation, all the best to you!
Really helpful tips Nigel, hope your recovery goes well and you are back to full strength, fair play to you for doing this video and the judging while managing the pain.
Nigel it's good to have you back! Wishing you a speedy recovery. Thank you so much for all the knowledge and experience you share. I am truly grateful for your content.
Thanks for the feedback on my photo Nigel! Its great to hear what the judges tought about all the pictures that almost made it trough, wish you all the best!
Glad to see you recovering. I think you can tell by the number of views that your audience is still with you, so be sure and take your time, don't rush, we are all eager to wait and see your photo journeys when you are fully 100 percent.
So wonderful to see you back well. Congratulations for the recovery. Also, I would like to thank you for the most beautiful book 'SEASCAPES' which I have received. It is photography of perfection. And this week’s video is filled with so many thoughtful quality tips. It will change my photography forever… very happy to see it!
Holy hell, mate I'm glad you're getting back on top of it. I had a cyst get infected on my leg and thought that was bad, but you win my friend. I can't wait to see your vlogs from out in the field as soon as possible.
Best Birthday present is being able to sit down this morning and see that you are back! Hope you keep on recovering and get back out in the field soon.
Hope you are back to good health soon mate. Living with pain is the worst. Your channel has inspired me so much over the years. Thank you. Good luck 👍❤️
First of all, I am so glad that you are getting well. I hope it continues to go good for you. Thank you so much for creating all these videos for us to learn more about photography. I also want to thank you for having the competition. Keep up your amazing work Nigel!
Great to have you back -- my Sunday mornings have not been the same without you -- and great that you are on the mend. And please keep up the composition recommendations and critiques -- I think that is where most of us need the most help.
All the best with your recovery Nigel. Irecently discovered your Channel and watched this video. So good with plenty of valuable tips and advice that can be applied when in the field or in post processing. Thanks for making this.
So great to see you back! Hopefully you are on the mend and the remaining recovery weeks will go smoothly. Sending you healing vibes and lots of patience. Cheers!
I am so sorry to hear about your struggles and it is amazing to see you foraging ahead. This video helped me remember the key elements to look for in creating better landscape photos. I have such a long way to go. Thanks for all your videos.
some excellent tips in your video Nigel. I can see why some of my images "fail". If you what to use any of my entries to demonstrate errors, feel free to do so.
Good to see you again Nigel. Very useful video. Small annoying things which we dont notice in our final photos but so apparent to an expert eye like yours and other judges. Good to see from that view. I was hoping my photos were picked by some chance for your constructive feedback. I guess they were that terrible, beyond repair 😄
It is so wonderful to see you posting again. We can see the effort it took for you and we all appreciate it. You are an inspiration for us not to have any excuses. Thanks again and good luck with a full recovery.
Glad to see that you are back on your feet, Nigel. I hope your recovery continues well. I was wondering if the judges in the World Landscape Photography contest compile a score for each image. I know that you can't give individual feedback for all of the images entered, but It would be fun for entrants to at least know how they rated in the overall scheme of things. Thanks much.
I usually don't click on videos where parts of the title is upper caps as they often don't deliver on that part ;-) but I am glad I did: good analysis with great tips. Echos a lot of what I look for in photos
Great to see you getting back to full strength Nigel. I can only imagine how frustrating and difficult the last few months have been. Thanks for these wonderful insights into what makes a good photograph. I have to admit I would have missed most of these 'flaws'. Congratulations to all who entered the competition and to the winners. I'm off to check out the website...
First of all I wish you fast and smooth recovery! Also the video is great with priceless knowledge about the composition. In my opinion it is the most important skill in the photography because slight change of position or even of crop changes all the story. The images are amazing, especially with ocean wave over lighthouse. Only one mentioned image (two birds in the woodlands) in my eyes looks like a composite from two shots. Anyway, thank you for the provided information and such good and practical examples!
Best wishes in your healing process Nigel. I enjoy your tutorials.
Thanks! Glad you're doing better.
Welcome back Nigel, pleased to see you again!
Thanks for using one of my images and thanks for the constructive criticism, I’ll treasure it!
Thanks again and good luck with a full recovery!
Lovely to see you back. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to full health. I always enjoy your videos and learn something new each time so thank you.

Welcome back, Nigel. It’s great to see you again - but don’t overdo it. Take it easy and fully recover from your procedures.
So glad you are back on line and hope you continue on your healing path. I so appreciate your videos! Thank you 🙏
Having seen your winners and losers, I am reminded how truly subjective the judgement of other's work can be. All of those non-selected images were amazing.
Great video Nigel, glad you are back. Off now to look at the pictures from the competition.

Welcome back. Missed you,
Have to agree with many of the points you've raised in your critiques.
I guess they were that terrible, beyond repair 😄
oh my goodness. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Sending love from the USA and the music city Nashville.
Glad to see you back, hope you're feeling better.
Great to see you you back on the tube and also great that you on recovery road!
I usually don't click on videos where parts of the title is upper caps as they often don't deliver on that part ;-) but I am glad I did: good analysis with great tips. Echos a lot of what I look for in photos
Great to see you back, Nigel; you have been a big part of my Sunday morning routine for some time. Hope your health continues to improve.
Get well soon! Hoping for your fast recovery! I've learned so much from YOU and this channel!
So good to have you back. Hope your recovery is quick for you at this point. Thanks for all you do.
Good to see you back Nigel in this video, don’t rush back though into the field only when you’re 100%.
