Thank you Nigel, I’ve followed your tutorials for 3 years or so. I’m a 75 year old Aussie Bloke and learn virtually day by day. I have wonderful assistance from a few SPECIAL PEOPLE. I will keep on keeping on. Thank you.
So many epic ... not a single "it does not get better than this"!
I loved this tutorial, as you would say - epic. Great tips for wide angle use. Glencoe looked just magical.
Really enjoyed this Nigel. I find wide angle creates so much foreground it can be difficult to eliminate and isolate my landscape so this has been really helpful. Loved the images captured. Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely epic Nigel, thank you
Great video, Nigel. Thanks!
I really enjoy all your clips and got quite a lot out of this one. Your lessons - and they truly are lessons, for you take your time, and methodically, patiently explain the principles you follow. You also reinforce the thoughts of others that I watch and that is always a good thing - it helps me to learn. I'm so very grateful to have found your channel. It is a finely-crafted resource, informative as well as entertaining.
Brilliant! What a gorgeous location. I really look forward to your Sunday morning videos. Thank you Nigel.
Nigel, great video as always.
I recently got the Fuji 10-24 and I have to say its completely transformed the way I think about photography. It provides huge scope for creativity and I love overcoming the technical challenges that come with it, focus, shutter speed, tripod positioning and I especially love getting that super sharp detail in the foreground that really draws the eye in. As always I learned from your videos so keep up the good work and have a fab time in Antarctica.
Thank you for your work!
Great video Nigel. I love where you get in the image and show how far the mountains appear and I love love the photo you printed at the end. Safe travels to you and the crew! Can’t wait to see the videos!
Thank you so much for the extensive thought and work you put into your videos. I know how much time this takes, adding in the drone shots, setting up the camera and walking in and out of shots, especially if you are on your own, plus the time thinking about the shots themselves. Great tips too about wide angle shots.
Using my 14-24 has made me very aware of the edges of my photos. That has been very helpful.
Another video filled with amazing images! Safe travels!
Great tips as always. Beautiful images too!
Love that song... that landscape is great... love your shots..... Thank you for your tutorial
Super video Nigel thanks for sharing
Appreciate the wideangle shooting tips! I'm playing with a 12-24mm DX lens on a classic Nikon DX3400, and along with a 18-55mm kit lens, am loving the wide angle perpectives!
Thanks again...
Another great video Nigel
Thanks so much Nigel. As always your videos get me thinking about my photography. That has to be a good thing. Also, just when are Mads and you coming to Australia? 😀
3:35 Nigel you are amazing!!!
Love these so much, you have established yourself perfectly as a high quality RUclipsr and photographer.
Great video! Definitely worth of watching a few times to remember all that and to avoid the mistakes.
Just picked up a wide angle lens. So nice timing. Can’t wait to watch this 👍
So much great knowledge in your videos. I am absolutely addicted to your videos. Thank you.
Thank you for addressing the wide angle lens, great compositions with the 14-24mm tend to be one of the biggest issues I have with my personal photography currently.
Excellent content as usual, very helpful !
Thanks for this great video on wide angle lenses Nigel. I struggle a lot with compositions with my 10-20mm Sigma (cropped sensor) so I do not use it very often. Your tips have given me encouragement to go out with my wide angle lens and experiment. I watched your video twice as there was so much information for me to take in in your video. Thanks again.
Thank you, enjoy every video you do. Learn so much. Thank you again
Just another day in paradise. 👍 🥂
Love the content! One thing that I still struggle is with focus, I’d love to see you show where you focused on your pic examples. Sometimes I don’t know if you had to focus-stack the photos.
Great vlog as usual Nigel. Love the printed image, which reminds me of the time I was up there in September 2021 and took a very similar image, albeit in very different conditions. Also, love the way you have processed it.
Really interesting points, thank you
Excellent video; great shots that really reinforced your points, Thanks, Kathy
Love the print, and enjoy the trip. Looking forward to seeing your icy photos ;)
Great video! One of the best bits of advice I can give regarding compositions and how to frame a shot is to spend some time using just one prime lens and no tripod! It teaches you to use your feet and move around the scene before getting in the bad habit of mounting it on the tripod straight away. I’ve just got back from the Coe this week running a workshop my god the weather was difficult!
Really good points as usual Nigel. I feel like good Wide-angle photos are a good indicator of someone's skill/experience, because it's such a difficult lens to create simple, pleasing images with. Hope Antarctica has treated you well (it certainly looks like it has!) 😁
Great Images Nigel love your work.
Awesome clear tutorial 😊
Great video and absolutely brilliant final print! Contrast is spot-on, and everything balances perfectly, like you said.
I tend to struggle with all of these aspects when using my 20mm, so I always appreciate the tips. I think my biggest are no "star" and wrong focus point. Then definitely not quite getting the framing right.
Another excellent video Nigel, really liked the image you printed at the end - very satisfying to see images in print. Looking forward to next week!
Nigel, all great points and inspiration to challenge me when out with my camera. I fail all the time with getting my tripod out too early and failing to do the work in finding the composition to get a foreground subject become an object of interest. I rarely go below 24mm because I simply don't challenge myself enough (and I should) with those wider focal lengths. What I do to go wide is to shot panoramas. I don't know if it would make a good video topic, but I would enjoy your take on the pros/cons of wide angles against a panorama. Thanks again for contributing these wonderful stories and tips.
Another great video, Nigel!! Thank you so much. You really pointed out some of the things I struggle with in photography and gave some wonderful advice for making my photos better. I will definitely keep this tips in mind during my next photo opportunity! Thanks for sharing your journey as a photographer with us!!
Nigel only makes amazing videos
That shot you printed Nigel was a worthy contender, what a awesome location. Have a safe trip and look forward to seeing some images. Thanks for sharing.
This was an enjoyable video. Really liked it.
Great tips, thanks for sharing!
The biggest mistake people make with wide angles is using too wide an angle, so all you see is the foreground.
But I agree that an L-bracket (and a levelling base) are essential game changers for a tripod!
Funnily enough when I first purchased my wide angle lens I barely used it because I didn't know how to compose well with it. Now it's always in my bag. Great video and points, a stunning location to show examples too.
Nice one Nigel. The use of foreground material is one which is so, so important in w/a photography, especially when in portrait format. Also, the notion of getting very close to larger background elements if you wish to still use the wide end is very important. Otherwise, I believe you have to have some decent sky formation to balance the foreground.
Hello Nigel Danson! Thank you for showing me a nice video! I really enjoyed it! Thank you for sharing! Have a nice day!
What a beautiful place and conditions!! Wonderful tips. I love a wide angle lens myself and often find myself doing a lot of these mistake
Fantastic advice, really informative video as always!
Gracias Nigel.
Really great video and lovely shots. Especially like the one at 7.58
Phone video previews are awesome for simulating for compositions. All Your videos are best tutorial on youtube.Congrats
Wonderful Glencoe. Loved that. Brought back fantastic memories of our winter photography trip there four years ago. Hopefully I've learned something since then! Hope you have a great time in Antarctica!
Just stunning results - especially that beautiful print!
Great vid that print at the end is absolutely stunning
Wonderful points and well illustrated as usual. Loved so many images in this vlog...well done. Question on the shot with the tufts of grass along the creek, do you find that you need to focus stack using wide angle more often to retain the sharpness? I believe that image was taken at f9 if I recall, but I often come home with a solid composition (I think) then I’m disappointed looking at the detail particularly in the immediate foreground. Any helpful hints? Thank you for your continued high quality vlogs!
This, well this is a gamechanger!!!!
Brilliant mate. Have a safe trip. 👍
Thanks for the tips Nigel, I enjoyed the images.
Very useful Tipps, Nigel. The printed image is a portfolio one. 😍😍😍
Looking forward to shooting with my wide angle more - will try to keep these ideas in mind
love how you explained this! it's like a light bulb just went off!
Thanks for sharing!
Great video Nigel. Thank you for the tips and... enjoy Antarctica!
Hi Nigel, hope your back isn’t giving you too much pain? Thank you for your innovating videos🙏 A huge fan!
Thanks again for such good advice. Hope you have a wonderful trip {so jealous) and can't wait to see your images. Stay safe.
Foreground interest is important on any picture, the problem I have is trying to accept all the distortion that wide-angle lenses produce in landscape pictures, quite often the finished result is unreal! Thanks for the tips and video.....
love the shot you printed!
Are you kidding this channel has only 300k + subscribers? Amazing to find your channel!
Granted, you do find some amazing spots to shoot - but there's so much more. The way you can take in an entire scene, and find the beauty, the sweet spot - it's a talent very few have. I'd love to be shooting your "mistakes". But really? Your "mistakes" are "happy little accidents" (Bob Ross quote). I truly admire that you look to your own work, and critique that. You don't take other people's work and say "they should have done this or that". You are a true giant in your profession, and I cherish the knowledge you share with us. Thank you for another great video tutorial.
Great vid.. I believe you could take a picture of a cow pat in a field with just one bush and make it look epic...
Thank you for queueing up some videos while you are away!
Good advice Nigel, and wow, some insane weather conditions there. From your vlogs it seems like you're in the right place at the right time nine times out of ten.
very useful as always Nigel & hope Antarctica is going well. I noted your comment on remembering to consider shooting in portrait when using a wide angle lens, for me it's the opposite way around as my default orientation with my 15-35mm lens is in portrait. I'm due up in Glencoe next month so hope I can put your tips into practice!
Fab video. I really learn so much from watching your channel.
I picked up some good tips. Thanks. The second shot turned that rivulet into a scary large waterfall. Amazing what a tight cropped perspective can do.
Great video.
Thanks again for great insights and inspiration. If I had scenery like yours, I would never go home.
Thank you!
Very interesting and plenty of food for thought it's left me thinking, do I need a wider lens than I have? I'd already decided to use mine more this year and take advantage of the focal distortion. Great tips thank you Nigel.
Good work again!!!🏝️ 🤺
OMG the rainbow at 13:53, so beautiful.
Thanks for this video Nigel, some really usfull info i have picked up from it. Liked the printed shot.
Envious of your Antarctica trip, went there on ship a few years ago visiting places like South Georgia Sandwich islands, Falklands and on to Antarctica itself.
Looking forwards to your shots.
Good luck with the ships internet, we had limited availability and quite costly.
I really loved this video. I use a Lumix bridge camera and my widest angle is 24mm. But I can easly make a wider angle shot using the pano composite mode that I learnd from my favorite youtuber Nigel Danson 🙂🙂
Hello Nigel, Hope you trip is going amazingly well? I love wide angle images but as you say some time there is just to much sky or foreground. So I have started using my Hasselblad in Xpan mode. Wow that open a whole big bag of excitement. Keep well, keep safe and enjoy your image making.
I have always struggled with wide angle lenses. There are some really good tips here.
There's been a few times watching you when I've thought "Nigel stop talking you're missing the shot!" Did it again when that golden glow came out 😂
Awesome 👏
I've experienced a few times where the light was fantastic, no matter direction you faced. Lots fun
Great video and tips. I started using a wide angle lens and I felt a lot of my pictures were empty because of the space
Thank you Nigel.🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷
Nigel. great video..In my opinion, wide-angle photography is the most demanding discipline in photography. Your tips on this seem very valuable to me. I recently had a 'discussion' about wildlife photography (which I can't do at all or even try). Yet I find the images which are made WA so much more exciting than with 600mm or even more mm boring.
This was really helpful! I've also loved seeing all your content from Antarctica so far 😍❄️
When you put your settings next to the stills, could you occasionally include whether or not you focus stacked? I'm still getting my sense of when it's necessary.
Oh I hope you took a tripod for the boat, you are definitely going to want one. Hope you are having a great time.
Hello, Danson
I'm watching your video from India 🇮🇳
I'm a big fan of yours, and I love your capture, keep up the good work ❤
Muy buen trabajo 👌
I have TONS of respect for anyone who can find truly interesting compositions with that wide of a wide angle. It is very, very hard to do.
Often one has to trick themselves into believing that a foreground element is far more interesting than what it _actually_ is.
(Of course this is coming from a portrait guy that lives life between 70-105).
😁😁😅 Very guilty of this! In the field, take one sunset, add a large foreground rock, boom job done. Then in post, heavily apply the belief filter 🤣
@@journeytoaphotograph Ha!! Yeah, I think geologists might be the only people who appreciate rocks more than photographers. And even that is only sometimes.
But I apply that foreground belief filter myself, of course. As a portrait guy I have a collection of pictures of blurry bushes, tree limbs and leaves that could make a Home & Garden catalog. Followed by sometimes running that belief filter through some frequency separation, too .
