Nigel, new to the channel, and I like it! thank you. Been many years ago with film/slides and mostly manual cameras with a meter. Life with family and twists and turns, now much older and wanted to get back into it here in SW colorado usa, with some stunning landscapes. Missed a few, Ansel Adams moments, no camera, errrrrrr!!!!.

Incredible stuff Nigel, you are certainly blessed by coming to the right place at the right time. What a place that gorge is, makes you think the word gorgeous is derived from that place. I liked your advice about keeping distance in mind during foggy conditions, as well as taking care of getting the branches in focus that might come into the direction of the camera. I totally understand your excitement and that you'd be running around like a headless chicken in these conditions and with so many characterful trees.

It was great to meet you and Rick in the car park on Tuesday and this video encapsulates everything I experienced both on that day and again on Thursday when the fog was even thicker in the gorge. It's amazing to see you photographed many of the trees that I did in those perfect conditions. I too was running around like a headless chicken on Tuesday but slowed down a lot on the Thursday - no prizes for guessing which photos were better. Great video by the way. Of course, on Tuesday we didn't know how long the fog was going to last and hence the haste but by Thursday it was obvious that it was going to hang around all day which took the pressure off.

Hi Nigel, great video of Padley Gorge. It was a sit back with a mug of tea and enjoy the beautiful trees. My wife and I go to Longshaw near Fox House quite often as it's handy to get to and the cafe does great sausage rolls. It's been many years since we crossed over the road and walked down into Padley Gorge. At the moment we're still trying to get to the pond at Longshaw. For a few days last winter, Longshaw was draped in fog as was much of Derbyshire, and it felt like a different world. The trees were misty silhouettes which made focusing a bit more fiddley and many of my shots didn't come out well; but a few did and I'm hoping for some more misty days to go and experience it all again. I'm retired now so I'll be able to take my time. Looking forward to rediscovering Padley.

Nigel, I commented on another photography website a few days ago about something you mentioned in this video, taking too many photos. If I get in that rut I think back to the time when I only shot Kodachrome 64 (yes I’m old) and had very little money for film and processing. Back then I was slow and meticulous about the the proper exposure and framing as a result I got a much higher percentage of good shots than I do now. It’s so easy to take several hundred digital photos in a day. When I get carried away like that, I try to pretend that there is KR64 in my camera.

You should explore beyond the gorge, there is a lot of history and archeology in that area, in Lawrence Field the medieval farmstead and ancient boundary, the quarry and cobbled roadway near surprise view, then as you go down towards Grindleford train station (where you find the legendary Grindleford Cafe) there's the old explosives store, in Padley you can find the Padley incline where you can follow the trackbed to the quarry used to provide the stone for the Derwent Dams.

What a beautiful place! And some really lovely photos, the fog is magical.
Its interesting, though, how photo preferences are so personal. It seems you often take your photos from head or neck height, and often with a downward camera angle, and often in the 24-40 mm range. In the photos you showed here, many of them felt to me sort of like their heads were cut off, so to speak.
I'm still quite new and have only experimented so much, but my favorite lens right now is 85mm equivalent (micro four thirds 42.5, f1.7), at waist height, or nearly ground level, with an upward camera angle. And some of the things I noticed and was hoping you would include in the photo, it seemed you didn't even notice (like some fencelines, for example). But, I have always been fascinated by all the micro stories that are happening in any bigger picture. Thanks for sharing, I hope I get to visit this area some day. Though, I also live in an area with some similar beauty, in Oregon, USA, not too far from the Pacific coast.
