- LS cam swaps are nothing new, but they can still be a little mysterious. In this Tech Talk, we run through a 5.3 LS cam swap on our LM7 junkyard engine with a BTR Truck Norris Camshaft and demonstrate how you can do a cam swap at home.
Adding this BTR Truck Norris Cam to your Vortec 4.8, 5.3, or 6.0 is as straightforward as any other LS cam swap. This swap is well worth the time and effort to upgrade the cam in an LM7, L59, or any other variation of LS truck engine.
GM’s LS engine platform reaches across most of the General’s lineup of vehicles. However, it’s most common in Vortec powered V8 pickup trucks from Chevrolet and GMC. With so many of these trucks on the road they have become a great source for LS swap fodder for everything from classic muscle cars to hot rods and trucks.

Great video, thanks for posting this. Nice to see a quick no BS method for swapping an LS cam, and the bonus added with either the quick stick method or fuĺl on pulling the heads too!
Thank you so much for keeping the gas V8 alive in the war against EV tyranny!!!!

That's what happens when you ban the dictionary. At least he doesn't think tyranny is something he sprinkles on his Salad.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! GREAT VIDEO AND EDUCATION. GREAT UPGRADE!!! THANKS FOR SHARING!!!
Might look into that loose chain and crank gear while you're there.
Great video 👌
Thanks guys!
A MUST WATC FOR A CAM SWAP ON A LS MOTOR!!!
Knowing my luck I would break off the wooden dowels in the engine
😂😂 savage
In the manual it says to torque the cam retaining plate to 18ft pounds
I bought a 5.3 for my 1970 Firebird, the race shop I bought it from said the cam had been swapped with a BTR cam. Is there a way to find out what type without taking the motor apart?
@speedwaymotors what spring were used with that set up?
Can’t present the process without the special tools. Get to the springs and you have to throw your wallet at the tools to follow these guys recipe
Quick question. did you use the stock push rod size I believe it’s 7.400 or did have to go up or down in size with the BTR truck Norris.
I got it in a kit from btr came with thicker wall stock length pushed rods. After Following richer holdner's video on installing. Being Between a half and one and a half turns to seat rocker to tray, after 0 lash. I think I could have got away with 7.425
Great Video but I am in need of your assistance. On my 5.3 LS Engine, I have started pulling apart my front end and tried to slide in my dowels into the oil ducts, on the drivers side I was able to slide dowel all of the in but on the left passenger side, i wasn't able to slide in the dowel all of the way because it stops half way. I have turned my cam shaft several times but it seems my lifters are preventing my dowel from going in. How do I correct this?
Are the dowls radiused at the ends? If they are really sharp it can make it a bit harder. The dowls can be a pain to use. I have installed several cams wout them just by spinning the cam and making sure I had everything laid out so I could put the new cam in quickly.
@@thecheckeredgarage Thank you
Hello! Instead of grinding a point on the end of the dowel you can try cutting a 45 degree wedge and try to get it positioned right. Good luck!
I used a bit smaller dowel and it worked perfectly. This video really helped a bunch. Thank you.
Yea but at this point the engine is out you found wear on stuff its refresh time. Dam it just went from $600 cam job to $$$$
Should of did came bearings too slacker
And lifters!
your online catalog is the absolute WORST. it won't go anywhere near what i want to look at
