  • An awesome new country artist, Chase Wright came by the studio to work on vocals for this cover he did of a Justin Bieber song! The production was so great on it that it did not need alot of mixing so I thought I would share how easily this came together with Logics stock plug ins! I like using stock plug ins to show you that everything you need is on your mac waiting for you right now to produce a production like this. You just need a great song, a great voice and a great production and theres little between you and releasing a pro sounding song yourself!

Great tutorial. I really love watching your videos, simple explanations and simple approach. "I am sitting in the front row of the class." KEEP'em COMING!

Thanks Forest! Appreciate the view on stock logic plugins. Most tutorials show 3rd party so you can never quite get the real feel for things. Keep em coming!

It would be really cool to see a video about how to properly RECORD instruments and vocals. I know I personally struggle with getting my recordings where I want them before I even get to the mixing stage. Thanks man and keep this awesome content coming!

I like how Forest cuts parts out of a track and moves the clip into its own clip. I find this an easier approach than trying to learn automation.

For the delay in the chorus trick you can just compress the delay heavily sidchained from the vocal. So in the gaps, no compression and the delay pops out.

I see you have some hardware compressors and rack gear in the corner. Any tracking/preamp tutorials in the works. Made a big difference for me when I learned what saturation and preamps can do on productions and recording acoustic real instruments

A better way for gain staging in Logic is to use the input gain button and then the region functions for all tracks at the same time. Highlight all tracks, go to region normalization, set the value to -10 dB or so and click in the function menu: for each track "individual". You can finish your gain staging in seconds...

Awesome video as usual, Forest! Quick question: Noticed on the compressors you kept “auto gain” on (-12dB) and didn’t seem too concerned about using the make up gain knob to account for the gain you were losing in compression. Is that because you’re just using your ears for what sounds good? How do you usually decide when to keep “auto gain on” and when to use make up gain?

Yes, I always trust my ears more than the knobs.. Most of my mixes look like they are clipping in the red on the master too and that bothers some but I do rely on what sounds good to my ear first than what looks good on the meter or compressor settings. Thanks for your comment!

Just a great singer and a quality mic. Peluso P12 into API pre into LA2A into Logic.. The front end does help capture quality you cant get just going from mic to interface I think. Just a bit more gain and color from hardware.
