I have wasted about 4 hours on RUclips trying to find someone to explain this process. Most of the videos are from people trying to act cool that are actually trying to push or sell something. Finally, a video that is straight forward, accurate, and clear. Thanks for this.
Update: SoundScan is now under the "Billboard" umbrella. Here are the new links to register your music for sales tracking: Single ISCR: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdsJbFiDM_w6twCkftP6his8fc-KIT2g3lWFgrDYR5AqPkRcA/viewform Album Title: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScbwxd7bkIAB-BLz8xf9dLVRGHD-uSLn1kAleHLYR2IIoHUXQ/viewform Also, Songs only need to be encoded with MediaBase now. They have "merged" services with DBS. Upload here: www2.mediabase.com/mbapp/NewMusicNotification/index
My pleasure! Keep in mind some registration methods have changed since making this video. Soundscan has been replaced by Luminate…and BDS is gone. Best of luck to you and your artists!
This video is obviously a slapper, very nice, and thank you for doing what you love. But that intro GOTTA GO! Opera would be better than the robot. I'll even give u a free rap intro if you want haha. But the info is gold, appreciate it f

Perfect video. Straight to the point. No loose talking. Full of insight. I wish it was thirty minutes and that the 30 min videos was 8 instead lol.. I rarely like ppl videos..and hardly ever leave a comment. Thank you.
Yep informative. Also note to open a business banking account can be expensive for a LLC as well. A few places I’ve tried required a bit of cash to open. Have to shop around.
Thanks for this right on video . Jimmy I worked as an AM Radio Station Announcer and I learned about Amplitude Modulation or AM FM etc . I found one day through a Wikipedia Search the History of the Radio Station I did announce From , that there was at that time a Nelson Corporation in part of the description that monitored the AM Broadcasts . Have you heard of this Corporation from New Jersey ,( Then the search was after so their monitoring was In 1978).I would log in every commercial spot , Mutual News , Reel to Reel Paul Harvey and Music Programs on the clock it was my duty to log the songs and write in the beginning and end broadcasting . I was a trainee . Your Video is gold . I’ve or we struck gold . Your a gold mine of info . Thanks again . Thought of your video and made important notes . See you on the top .
Hey Jimmy thanks so much for this video! I didnt know about Mediabase so that is helpful. Also, you mentioned Play MPE very briefly at the end of the video. Can you elaborate on what they do and do you have any recommendations for unbiased sources on what they do? I remember speaking with Play MPE on the phone several years ago and I was very skeptical of their approach with indie artists and I'd like to hear more of artists firsthand experiences with them.
Fantastic Info. Jimmy. Thank you so much. I've subscribed. I'm surprised you don't have more subscribers and views on your videos. Very important stuff you're providing. Thanks again.
Hey! I’m so glad you reached out. But, to be honest, I’m not really in a position to release other artist’s music. That being said, I’ll help, where I can, with any questions you might have about releasing a single. The first thing I’d do is become a member of whatever Performing Rights Organization is offered in your country and learn how to navigate their song registration process. Then I’d look into digital music distribution companies…DistroKid, Ditto, CD Baby are some major players, or check out Amuse.io for a free option. I hope this info helps get you started!
Thank you! This video was very helpful, I appreciate you getting straight to the point! I’ve watched a few videos on this subject and you provide the most insight. Subscribed! ✅
Thank you for sharing this information with us. This has been a very valuable source of information for me. Thank you again for sharing this info. I wishing you continued success with all of your music videos and all of your other endeavors. Plus I am also wishing you continued success with your financial situations as well. Have a wonderful evening. I appreciate you sharing.
Good Question! No, it does NOT replace them. SoundScan is used to track sales (streams), whereas Songtrust and Sound Exchange are royalty-based platforms. To make it even more confusing, SoundScan has since been replaced with a different system called Luminate by Billboard. The new links for that are in the description and in the "pinned" comment of this video. Hope this helps a little!
Dang Jimmy.. thank you soo much for this.. With gigging and day job + trying to figure out all of this stuff has been a challenge.. Question though if you're still tracking this.. As an ASCAP self publisher, do I need to add the works to both my artist account and the Publisher account?.. Cheers mate!
Hey Robbie! Way ahead of you! I just put up a video explaining ascap a little better. ruclips.net/video/curjZ1IWsJc/видео.html In short, you only have to register a song from ONE of your accounts and it’ll show as a “work” in the other. While you’re registering a song it’ll ask for all writers info…then all publishers info. I definitely recommend picking one or the other to register songs from. That’ll help keep things organized as you’re catalog grows.
Use this one...keep in mind BDS and Mediabase have "merged" into one entity now. You only need to upload here: www2.mediabase.com/mbapp/NewMusicNotification/index
Why did you skip over a few things it shouldnt it be be Record Song,Enter Meta ISRC,UPC,Then Copyright, then Sound Exchange, then MRI, Nielson BDS,then DSPs,? And so on or am I wrong🤔
When registering your single/album with Soundscan for billboard, do you have to be from the US or Canada? I'm from the UK so when it wants required information like my phone number it wants a US number format, so I assume you can't actually register outside of the USA or Canada? I cannot find anything online about this. Thanks! EDIT: Sorrry just another question, In the UK our government website states this: 'You get copyright protection automatically - you don’t have to apply or pay a fee. There isn’t a register of copyright works in the UK.' Does this mean when registering for my PRS and MCPS that's enough for me?
To my knowledge Soundscan only serves the US and Canada. While you can use European ISRC and UPCs to register songs, Soundscan will only gather data from North American sources. As far as UK copyright, you’re absolutely correct. It seems you’re protected as soon as you write the song, and I imaging your MPCS would help resolve any disputes. Keep in mind that the UK music business is out of my realm, so maybe other UK artists can comment with more accurate information.
'As of November 1st, 2022 BDSradio airplay tracking services have been merged into Mediabase. This means you no longer have to register in two different spots for your airplay tracking." Is that true?
Hello Jimmy If I use a distribution company who also offers music music publishing like Tunecore or Cdbaby do I still need to register the song with a PRO like ASCAP ?
Is it rational to register on the website of a PRO such as ASCAP, BMI, etc., if I am not a US citizen? I'm asking this because there doesn't seem to be a similar service in my country. Also, I write rather niche instrumental music, and I highly doubt that anyone will want to use it in stores, on the radio, etc. Would DistroKid (or any other distributor) + Songtrust be a good option for me?
You're able to register your song before the song is released? I thought it has to be done after it's released... and if it's possible, do you recommend doing it before hand
Good question. You definitely should register your song(s) before they are released. This ensures your tracks hit the ground running and no paperwork has to be backtracked. You can register with your PRO as soon as you literally write the song. Then once you have more info from your distributor, like ISRC codes and release dates, you can edit the track info in your PRO to keep everything updated. Also, as soon as you have the ISRC codes from the distributor, you can start registering with the soundscan and the others. You do not have wait for the tracks to be officially released. Hope this helps!

Dear every music creater: DO BOTH COPYRIGHTS. This is NOT optional. DO THEM BOTH.
Whudyou mean "both?"
@@darrinsiberia There is an SR form and a PA form. Those have different functions, it's not one or the other IT'S BOTH.
You can file online as well, it’s cheaper & faster. Only when you have your work copyrighted that you can protect it.
