I love the fact that the moment he puts his arm around her, she doesn't bother brushing it away because as a conceited move star (in her mind) he'll probably keep trying. So instead she goes for something that is a lot more easily damaged: his large ego.
As much as she talked about how painful and nerve-wracking this movie was for her, Debbie's actual personality shines through this character. That desperation to prove herself and survive wasn't just Kathy's character - that was Debbie.
My favorite part is what Gene's voice sounds like when he says "Fear not, sweet lady. I will not molest you. I am but a humble jester and you, you are too far above me." and his hand motions are THE BEST xD
"I can't understand it. This car hasn't given me a lick of trouble in at least 6 hours!" -The equivalent of a modern movie making a joke about how shitty '80s computers were. I love it.
2:40 She's like, "hmm how do I get him to back off?...hah! hurt his pride! that'll teach him I'm not easy!" I love how she really was a fan of his but managed to keep her cool and self repect intact when suddenly meeting him like that.
I really enjoy the interplay between the two in this scene. The changes that they project so successfully are subtle, but very recognizable. She's scared, then sympathetic, then wary and ultimately scornful as he shifts from being genuine to a bit sleazy. In real life, Debbie was still very young and new to movies, and Gene was condescending and stern with her. He was annoyed that she had so little experience. But fortunately, none of his attitude or her inexperience shows.
Debbie Reynold's performance in _Singin' in the Rain_ alongside the great Gene Kelly belies both her youth and experience as a dancer. The apple wouldn't fall far from the tree as, also at nineteen years of age, her daughter Carrie Fisher would more than hold her own alongside older and more experienced co-stars, in her own break-out role. RIP America's Sweetheart and her Princess Leia.
So true. Two great actresses such a loss. I don't think Debbie could handle the death of her daughter died of a broken heart even though she died from a stroke. So sad to lose them both but thankful we have RUclips and their movies are also on DVD. So we can still watch them.
This scene is so good. They both find a way to mock the other, stand their ground and show they have equal tempers, smarts and witt. It's a sure way to make the audience want them to get together.
Absolutely adorable dialogue and a smart way to bring the guy with feet on the ground again especially after a fan attack 😂 you want to meet the man not the VIP!
My favorite part comes when he playfully tries to intimidate her, and she then reads him the riot act before giving him a shove. Maybe it's because it's been only several hours since Reynold's daughter passed away, but there's something about that kind of intense back-at-you she gives Kelly, that reminds me a bit of how Fisher bantered with Ford.
80MWH You wrote it was only hours since her daughter passed away, it's sad that it would be only hours before Debbie herself, passed away too. I thought she had released such a graceful statement about the public's concerns of Carrie's death. It's not until she passed away so soon after that I realized how much pain it must have brought her, at such an age, to lose her beloved daughter, and so abruptly too. Carrie was the troubled daughter, and through interviews alone, you could see that Debbie had always worried about her. How she had wanted her to be happy, how proud she was of her daughter for her strength, her intellect, her wit. She always spoke fondly or how fast Carrie was, how she could invent words of her own that held their unique meanings. She tried to understand her, to truly understand her, and not just understand her in her own way. I could not even imagine how devastating it was for her, losing that one child she sought to protect on every step of the way. They didn't even get to spend Christmas together (Carrie was in a coma since 23rd). I'm not particularly religious, but I really do hope there is an afterlife they could go, and Debbie would be able to find her daughter in there.
squallofreeves Broken Heart Syndrome. You see the same thing in married couples who have been together for decades; the bond between them is so strong that often when one dies the other follows shortly after. In this case, the mother-daughter bond was equally strong. Safe passage to them both.
Im truly in shock. I have a huge smile on my face from watching this. I am Kathy Seldon in my schools performance of this and seeing her facial expressions and how she says her lines amaze me. They trully are a perfect couple and I am now obsessed with this movie.
Eternal rest Grant uno her oh Lord , and let perpetual light shine upon her may Debbie. soul and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen
Definitely jokes have better sense in every movie's original version. In Spanish Cosmo says "a cab or an ambulance?" because the word "call" doesn't have the same pun. I burst out laughing
"do something, cos, call me a cab!"
"OK you're a cab."
Best Line ever!
The best line in musical history
Yes! 😂
Stolen from the classic Laurel & Hardy film “Another Fine Mess.”
Never fails to make me laugh
She is thinking, "Ok, how can i get this guy to back off? I got it!! Target his ego!"...Smart girl.
I thought that's what she was getting at too. It turns out she was just trying to impress him by being standoffish
I absolutely love her facial expression when he puts his arm around her
If that isn't one of the most relatable things on earth
Cosmo's face when he say "Ok, you're a cab" is so funny!!!

Also as a woman back in this decade she probably wouldn't have been able to do much and the cop didn't even believe her
"Here we are....Sunset and Camden!" :)
I *still* sing this whenever I get somewhere after a long journey in the car !
One of my favourite sing song lines :)

Debbie's facial expressions at 3:06 are spot on. Reynolds' scenes are why I watch this movie. Pure fun, that girl.
"I'd very much like to know whose hospitality I'm enjoying."
And that's where I begin to smile at myself
Hey Cos .. Call me a cab!

80MWH you're gonna make me cry!! I was thinking the same thing! This is where Carrie learned to not take crap from men- her own mother :-)
80MWH well now they're both dead RIP

To react on your first comment: this is exactly what I was thinking about. She reminds me strongly of Fisher in this particular scene.

This is my favorite scene of the film xD Kathy was so sassy hahaha love it

"Farewell Ethel Barrymore." Farewell indeed. 😥
I must tear myself from your side
"I can brush up on my english or bring along an interpreter........."
adorable scene.
Almost any good romance film needs a strong moment of hate between the two who will eventually fall in love.
I LOVE how gene looks straight into the camera every now and then.. swoon..
I love her face at about 2:18 when he puts his arm around her...priceless! I love this movie!
0:29 to 1:09 is probably the best part.
"Hey Cos, call me a cab!"
"Okay, your a cab."
"Thanks a lot!"
Yeah, his nonchalant attitude is just the best 🤣. He's probably okay with folks not going wild over him as Don. And THIS is probably why.
Donald O'Connor steals every scene he's in.
Don senses an opening when Kathy says "That's terrible."
Dialogue wrighting at it's best ...
Funny how you "wrought" that about a dialogue. 😂
@@rusojanjalashvili3437 now try this in french 🍟

What madness to see the famous. I like this scene a lot, she, at first, treats him naturally, despite knowing who he is. ❤
Debbie Reynolds was so wonderful! She had such a delightful charm, it just took one scene for you to fall completely in love with her!
Gene Kelly was such a talented, gifted "hunk"/hunque.
I love how she targets his ego--deflate!! Haha
i'm 16 years old and from germany ... but i simply LOVE this movie!!♥

4:30 Farewell Ethel Barrymore

''Well, if it isn't Ethel Barrymore'' 😂😂
Why do I have the feeling that he was just as flirty and forward in real life as he was here in this scene? lol
because he was, his widow said he was a hopeless romantic; he was a gentleman
Best musical / comedy ever, Period!!

First time I watched this, I was stunned by her suddenly bursting into song. One casual line, but what a voice! 3:15
The best part is mesmerising dialogue delivery

Great how she derides the movies and calls the Theater a dignified profession - yet he claims he has dignity. They were made for each other.
