  • I played Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning back in the day before it got remastered. I remember loving every part of the game, but never got to finish it or get anywhere near finishing it due to sheer size. Today, we look at the remastered version of the game, Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning and figure out "is it worth playing in 2023?". Do take note that this game review is only my opinion of the game, and I'd love nothing more than to discuss both my views and yours in the comment section below.
This one really kind of hurt since I really like the premise of the game, but playing it, looking at today's standards, I wouldn't really want to replay this one. Let me know what you think in the comments below!
If you liked the video, please do leave a like and consider subscribing! I make game reviews of various genres of games, but mainly stick to the fantasy RPG genre. Hope you enjoyed the video and have a great day ahead!
Music used in the video (all composed by Grant Kirkhope and performed by the Prague Philharmonic):
    1. Kingdoms of Amalur Soundtrack - Main Theme
    2. Kingdoms of Amalur Soundtrack - The Age of Arcana
    3. Kingdoms of Amalur Soundtrack - Troll
    4. Kingdoms of Amalur Soundtrack - Dalentarth

The Fae aren't Amalur's version of elves. Those would be the Dokkalfar and the Ljosalfar, which are literally the Old Norse names for "dark elves" and "light elves", respectively. The Fae are, well, Fae. As in the fairies from old Anglo-Saxon and Celtic mythology.
Meanwhile, the "Tuatha (Dé Danann)" are an Irish mythological god-folk. So much of Amalur's lore was taken from real-life mythology, and it goes to show the role they wanted the Fae to take in the universe.

I finally got around to playing Amalur. It's a shame it didn't do better, and that I ignored it for so long.
Playing PS4 version on a PS5, have had only a couple minor bugs.
The visuals are beautiful though dated, and a bit hazy. It's amazing how huge this world is.
The writing is at times fabulous; clever, and witty. When it's not being generic or hoaky that is.
I started this playthrough as a mage, then Sword & Board, then Greatswords, now at level 26...
I'm having a ton of fun with the Rogue's combat. Created a very powerful build. My original plan was to stun lock enemies with +150% Stun. However, nothing actually lives long enough to make it useful. Time to see how much crit damage I can stack.
Stressed out from FROM? Throat sore from Shouting at Dragons? Amalur is a great chill RPG, I highly recommend it. You just have to accept what it is, and what it isn't.

@@YoreHistory the art style is very reminiscent of WoW. It's been a long time since I played WoW, there are some similarities in gameplay, but far fewer abilities.
KoA is a fun, fairly straightforward, yet expensive game.
I DL'd it on PS+, so "sort-of-free". I did play for a lot of hours (turn over every stone kind of player). Definitely a deep-discount / free only title by todays standards.
As for the crit build I alluded to previously...
The Pirate expansion adds OP crafting parts, I did the 2 expansions after the Main game.
Max Crit hit: 41 million... theoretically it could go much higher. It was fun for a bit, but then I toned it down. A lot.

I disagree about the travel times. Sure there's no reason to go into a dungeon before you get the quest for it, but that helps exploring everything since there will always be an npc pointing you towards an interesting area. Going with the flow of the quests will also pace travel better than running around the entire map to uncover all points of interest for fast travel.
Also imo the world design in this game is pretty good. Not only do most areas of this game present a sub-biome distinct from the others, that also includes having their own themes and quests around the main thing in that area.
I agree on the move sets though. It gets a bit repetitive, if you only use the same set of weapons and abilities for the entire playthrough. While you can of course switch things up and even re-spec easily, abandoning your chosen build halfway trough doesn't feel that great.
Would have prefered a more complex move-set for each weapon. Things like heavy attacks, attacks in combination with blocking, button combinations with movement... would have likely required having 2 buttons for a weapon and then a switch button to get the other one out.

    Scusa il ritardo…
    Faccio premessa.
Impara a giocare e verrai premiato.
    Non è il mio caso.
Chi risponde è inutile quanto chi con like e sostegno difenda questa merda.
Coraggio ne avete e competenza non vi serve.
Non la capisci o capite .

Played the original on launch on Playstation console, because Todd McFarlane and RA Salvatore and because why not?
I liked it quite a bit because for me it was the single player World of Warcraft in a way that I played my WoW, which was mainly alone. The fighting system was close enough, at least for a rogue character which I played.
Just now reliving my memories after having started the Re-Reckoning on Nintendo Switch. Gotta say it's a bit of a slog now at level 3-4 and me having forgotten most of what I ever knew. Will get better for sure once I get the hang of it.
After Witcher 3 gameplay that I relived just before this the dodge and battle in general is a bit of a different thing. Just need to unlearn Witcher and relearn Amalur.
Despite all its flaws I'd love to see Amalur 2 sometime in the future.
As for the actual question posed at the end of the video I'd beg to disagree. Sure, it may feel old and dated, but I'd want to bring up two points: 1) With discounts on a bargain price, for sure get it, and 2) For old school grindy RPG fans it's not so bad. Kill, fetch, loot random stuff, repeat cycle is really at its best here.
What really would have benefited this game would have been New Game+ mode or the current free roam mode after completing the base game with added challenges like for example Hades offers.
Make enemies have double HP, make them do double damage, double the amount of enemies on each spawn point, that kind of stuff and allow players to challenge themselves by adding these difficulty modifiers. Maybe not something a first time player would appreciate but it would make the fans of the game spend more time with the game at least.

Just bought it and played 8 hours in one day, a thing that now it doesnt tend to happen to me due to work and other stuff. The game is the perfect mix in a world like Fable with Oblivion like character with a Dragon Age II like gameplay in some aspects. Its awesome and people comparing it to Skyrim should understand you cant compare those cause they are different type of fantasy games. This is more comparable to Fable and Fable II wich is what comes in mind. Fable II for me is awesome but due to it being console exclusive saddens me so this is a go for me. There is a fundamental misunderstanding about "the Chosen one" here. This is an ancient concept, and throughout the ages, the "Chosen One" was tied to the strands of fate, almost the opposite of a free agent. Sometimes the tragic hero or heroine tied to the whims of fate or the gods' decree has the illusion of free and is even fighting their destiny but ultimately succumbs to what is pre-ordained. No one can escape their fate, the story goes, least of all the hero chosen BY FATE. The Greek and Norse mythology that video games often draw inspiration from - as does Kingdom of Amalur - have such stories aplenty. If you're looking for "players' choices matter" look _anywhere_ but here. Chosen does not mean choice, it means the very opposite: the choice was made for you, and you're stuck with it.

I rage quitted Kingdoms of Amalur after 30 hours of gameplay, because the main story is below mediocre, the side quests are very boring and the combat is too annoying (not hard, just annoying)
When you take a hit, your character staggers and you can't do anything, until the animation ends. Until then, the other enemies will combo on you. It was too much for me, when I was in Klurikon, each 20 steps, new enemies would appear. I had to fight 5 Niskaru at the same time, and then a Thresh with lots of Boggarts, and then, 2 Threshes with lots of Boggarts
