Great review. I've daily driven my i8 for 17k miles over my first year of ownership. It's great as a good commuting car but also good for when you want to cruise with supercars. Best of both worlds. I DIY maintain mine and it's complicated but not impossible to access the front motor bay and mid-engine. And, service is very reasonable compared to supercars. I agree, it's a great deal in the used market and I'm glad I picked my 2015 up sub-80k.
Blind spot monitoring would be a package. Bmws do not come fully loaded. They are package vehicles. You are talking about options for that brand. And you shouldn’t need BSM if you know how to adjust your mirrors.
Those are options that come in very inexpensive vehicles nowadays. Everyone knows that German brands don't pack in lots of packages but at the price point of 150k they need to provide more base options especially since the performance doesn't justify the cost.
SchwayZ_ this is true but bmws are supposed to be driver and driving focused machines. A lot of those technologies are nannies and lessen the experience of what BMWs are supposed to be; sports cars. Although that philosophy has changed, their cars have not changed in the way they are optioned. And it’s for that aspect alone. A lot of bmw drivers don’t want those technologies which is why they are optional. BMW doesn’t bundle to save money either. That’s for budget brands and that’s how bmw separates themselves even from the likes of Mercedes and Audi. My bmw compared to my Mercedes seems very basic and they cost they same. The Mercedes is loaded to the gills (3 series vs C class).
@@SimbaTheGreat yes but the problem is that the i8 is not meant to be a performance focused car that competes against McLarens and Lamborghinis. It was supposed to be a more practical vehicle that can be daily driven and at the same time offer decent performance. If this was a car with 200 mph top speed and 0-60 in 3 seconds then I wouldn't note the lack of blind spot monitoring
SchwayZ_ I actually agree with you. Iirc the i8’s original mission was supposed to be a sport hybrid like what the CRZ tried to be. Or an even better example is a budget NSX. Very similar technology except bmw is trying to be more practical. Either way it goes, their optional features should be standard. Like alarms and whatnot. Those are all options for some reason.
Late reply but my 2015 i8’s battery hasn’t lost anything and in California the electrical drivetrain, including the main battery, has a ten-year warranty so I’m not worried.

Also the earlier models did not have BSM even as an option. That's on the newer models
