Bo Burnham's own thoughts on this scene: "I wanted to portray a moment that, when described after the fact, doesn’t sound like a big deal but actually is when you sit there and experience it with her … That scene takes a turn where her anxieties can’t just be dismissed by an adult as: ‘Oh, you’re in eighth grade. Nothing’s really happening to you.’ Significant things happen that can really traumatize kids.”
When she says "please don't tell Olivia about this" it's heartbreaking, because I think she understands she did nothing wrong, but she doesn't want to risk her new (and probably first) friendship because of this piece of shit.
Also, I saw it as maybe she was scared that she thought it was her fault and didn't want Olivia to think she led one of her friends on.
Something that is especially interesting to me about this scene is the amount of control Riley has at all times. Besides him being older and stronger, he controls nearly aspect of the scene. He controls whether Kayla gets home, among other things. He constantly manipulates the game so that he is the one choosing the dares. He changes the dare that Kayla initially gives him. She initially picks truth, but he changes it to dare. It probably seemed to her that she didn't have a choice in what was happening until she shouted 'no'. She immediately backtracked, realizing he also controlled what the rest of his friend group thought of her afterwards. That's why she asks him to not tell Olivia.
That “ NO” and “ sorry” right after is just it.

Such an unbelievably realistic scene. I wasn’t the usual movie thing were a guy just jumps at it. It was extremely real. The fake humor so as to make it seem like they won’t do anything wrong, Kayla’s need to not appear uncool and then the mentality of blaming herself for it rather than the guy. Holy shit

I mean to be honest, blaming the guy in these situation could have been more dangerous
I hate to be "that guy" but this scene resurfaced a couple of really bad memories I repressed in middle school. Being young and impressionable, trying to find acceptance in older kids, an older boy trying to convince me to do something like that, the guilt I felt at the time, the feeling like I couldn't tell anyone, it causes me to shake just thinking about this scene. It was so meaningful to see something like that in a movie without watering it down for comfort's sake. It wholly validates the things young people, especially young girls, have had to experience and it's terrifying.
I felt so sickened by this scene and started crying. No other movie was so accurate in portraying how I felt at 14. It was with a guy that looked and sounded exactly like the actor in which I felt very uncomfortable, as the only thing that stopped it from going further was that his ride was here. I wanted to throw up. I can't stress how important your consent MATTERS as I half-assed an "okay" because I was scared, impressionable, and thought that was how it worked. If you are uncomfortable in a situation, SAY SO and be ASSERTIVE, and likewise don't be manipulating people into anything, make sure they're COMPLETELY okay with it.
This scene is so important to me. I watched this movie last night and as this scene played out I found myself starting to shake and feel sick. I felt just as terrified and uncomfortable as Kayla did. When she got home and started breaking down in her room I was right there with her and starting sobbing. Major props to the actors, Daniel Zolghadri wonderfully played the creepy and menacing intent he has even before he gets in the backseat and Elsie Fisher perfectly did the switch Kayla has between the comfort and excitement with Olivia to the nervousness, discomfort, and fear with Riley.
I keep thinking, "She did such a good job, this is so realistic" and then I remember that I'm speaking of experiences from when I was her age. She's no doubt at least pulling from similar fears and anxieties. What a remarkably strong young woman.
this movie is so well written. i think it’s really dope how in the mall they were talking about perverts and this guy laughed, which prompted Aniyah to scold him for that. at first I’m like girl calm down, and then I get to this scene and I’m like okay maybe she was onto something
this scene scared and still scares the shit out of me. it’s a type of violation and manipulation that is never shown seriously in movies or tv shows
I cried so hard at this scene cause I had the impression I was her and got so anxious and stressed I could'nt breathe. I never felt more relieved when it ended
The lighting in this scene adds a such a sinister element to the boy. It's beautifully done.

This scene is scarier than any horror film I've ever seen.
Love this movie. So much real life drama. I love how this grown up problem and real threat is seemlessly mixed in with all the middle school drama. That feels very real to me for that time of my life. Everything at that time feels so weighty, that it becomes difficult to pick out real problems from day-to-day anxieties.
As much as I hate to admit it, this is extremely realistic.
I wish younger me had seeen this and understood that I don’t owe anybody anything, I think that would have saved me from alot of situation where I got manipulated. :(

I know she’s fictional but I’m so incredibly proud that she was able to stand up for herself and say no even if it was timid even if she was scared i wish I would’ve been more like her
I haven't seen many horror films that creep and stress me out as much as this scene
A situation very similar to this happened to me when I was younger. Only it happened twice, it came from someone who was the same age as me and the person who did it was demanding rather than manipulative. But it was the same feeling and the same implied rape attempt through telling someone to remove an item of clothing. And thankfully I did tell people about it (That person did receive some kind of punishment as a result, I think he had to move classrooms), but I'm grateful that a movie finally did represent what it was like.

Both of them are very talented and the girl deserves a lot of praise for her acting but the boy also did an outstanding job In my opinion

The scene is so realistic and sad at the same time, but both of them acted so well.
Just watched this movie. This scene was brilliant bc it's all too true how she grapples with her hormones but doesn't know what to do with them yet exactly, but she knows she's afraid yet values acceptance. Brilliant portrayal of the emotional confusion, fear, and turbulence that highlights being a young teenager. Her scene with her dad was both heartbreaking and heartwarming.

I feel like this scene needs to be talked about more! This young girl told him no and he did not back off, and instead shamed her! AFAB people are shown from as young as an age as possible that men can do whatever the hell they want to you, and nothing will happen to them because they have a penis! THAT IS SEXUAL HARASSMENT!! I had my first kiss at 17 with a 25 year old man who told me he was also 17, nothing happened because it was his word against mine and I was "close enough to 18". This issue is something that more people need to talk about no matter how uncomfortable it is because its wrong, and those women will grow up with deep set trauma that can never be healed, so this vicious cycle continues. Yet society continues to make it the woman's fault so that men don't receive punishment. This is something i wish more people focused on in this movie, it shows the fear and anxiety that women feel in these situations regardless of their age, that fear of being raped or killed never goes away, and when women get confidence back the world as a way of shutting it down again by having another situation occur. This is what being a teen girl is now days, learning that the world is not safe and to only be in fear.

The saddest part is that she knew that what was going on wasn't okay, but she didn't know how to properly stand up for herself. When he touched her shirt, she let out a strong, firm "NO!" which was perfect but then she felt like she was being too mean and immediately backed down and said "Sorry..." which is definitely what most young girls would do and it's heartbreaking.

I KNOW for a FACT that every single girl my age I know would have smacked him well and good right over the head if he did that, and we're all 11 and 12 years old. This is a very good example of manipulation and grooming on the guy's end. "That's stupid yeah I'm being stupid" (self-pity) "I was trying to help you" "Now you're gonna end up with some guy at a party and he's gonna tell all his friends, you want that?" "This was about you, I was trying to help you" (convincing her that he knows better) "You think I'm comfortable like this?" (even though he's the one that took his shirt off. He's making it seem like it was her fault)
He obviously knew what he was doing and what he was trying to do. Major props to the actor and the writers on this one
It was really good writing. So hard to watch. Poor Kayla.
What's weird is that first time around I did partially believe him. I still saw him as a predator but I thought that maybe he didn't actually understand that what he was doing was wrong. But that's obviously not the case or the point.

This is heartbreaking. Apologizing because she doesn't want to loose a shred of acceptance but still so uncomfortable. I hope a lot of kids see this movie.
I got to see it as it came out right before I went into 8th grade, but unfortunately not that many kids got to see it because it was rated R. Kinda crazy that a lot of 8th graders couldn't see a movie about themselves.
Honestly, out of all the scenes in the movie, this one impacted me the most. Its both uncomfortable and heartwreching.

I'm so glad Bo included this scene, it's important for young people to know about this kind of manipulation. Guys and girls both do this! They say they're trying to help you by sexually harrassing you, and then get mad when you're not into it. It's unacceptable
“I’m doing it for you” he’s trying to convince himself as much as her, that’s why they get so annoyed when you cry, or say sorry, because until then they can still delude themselves that they’re a good guy.

I was soooooooooooo mad watching this. She was a victim yet she was manipulated into feeling bad and actually apologizing to a predator! The sad thing is that things like this do happen in real life. One of the abused gymnasts said she apologized to Nassar because she reported him to another coach (but they buried it) and he blamed her for getting him into troubles even though he had only wanted to help

I think it's sad that this film captures a lot of guys out there who call themselves "nice guys" but they still expect you to put out out at the end of the date. What's even worse is that they don't even think that what they're doing is wrong. We need to call these guys out on their manipulation tactics and this scene is scary and sad by how plausible and relatable and realistic it is. This film is so timeless by being so present because our current problems won't go away any time soon.

I was in a scarily similar situation when I was in high school, except I got out of it by lying and saying I was sick. Watching this was incredibly stressful and made me want to cry. I wish I had been as brave as Kayla was to firmly say "No".

So many people are commenting about how this scene makes them mad or how creepy it is or how ridiculous it is that she’s apologizing for saying no, and it is fucked up, but the thing is, this kind of thing is really common. I've been through an experience like this. It was incredibly similar, only not in a car, not part of a game and involved another classmate that I actually knew. To put it a bit into context, I live in Britain, was 9-10 at the time and am a male. The attempted perpetrator was also male. So yes, stuff like that is really common.

This is the scariest scene I've seen from any movie in 2018.
I always wished in a way Olivia was aware of this because she was like a role model to Kayla & I know for a fact that she would've helped a situation like this.
At first I couldn't stand Trevor & Aniyah at the mall & I thought Riley was going to be a good person but after this scene I would've rather tolerate people likeTrevor & Aniyah everyday than a dude like Riley

this scene is super important, especially in a film with this kind of storyline, learning to be human, to be you, to use your voice when you have to, but I'll be honest, after this scene i had to stop the movie and walk away because it caused me to have a panic attack briefly. However, I'm really glad it was kept in the film. young people (not just the ones who experience this kind of near miss, but the people who commit it) need to know that this kind of behavior isnt ok. gaslighting isn't okay, grooming isn't okay, and trying to convince or coerce someone to have sex or do anything they aren't comfortable doing ISN'T OKAY
