Terry!! I just tried this. I have a tripod and a Zoom H2n (killer mic) and I have never heard my drums sound as good on a recording at home. Guys and gals this WORKS!!!! Thanks terry
I have used MXL microphones as overhead microphones for a few years now, and they are really good microphones. For the price, their quality and sound are hard to beat.
I like using my Blue Yeti Mic in stereo mode (so its one mic in stereo 👌) and you can put some convolution reverb on it to get the headley grange sound. I have some zeppelin covers where I use that method.
If I'm not mistaken some if not all the original MOTOWN recording were made using this recording technique ! The Mic was hanging directly over the snare!
i have a question for paiste people, i have a paiste 20 medium ride, i got it from a pearl set my grandpa gave me, the cymbal has purple lettering and says 900 series, but no matter how hard i look i cane find anything on it, my grandpa was a drum fanatic many years ago but has not been for many years now, he cymbal is probably from before the 80's definitely before the 90's, but the only 900 series i can find are very recent, it says made in switzerland if that could help any, i was just wondering if it was from a discontinued series or something, if you can help that would be great, i have heard the first number of the serial number is important, mine is 5, but idk what any of it means.
ive sat behind kits and i cannot make them sound as a good as the owner. a great drummer will make any kit sound good, but the drummers out there with exceptional touch will make kits sound even better. it takes a long time and hard work to get to that point
Hey Terry, that Mic is fine for recording electric guitar as well i assume. And Also do you mind posting the link for that exact mic? That's the next thing i think I'll be getting. Ive already bought an interface, new drums, cymbals etc Haha. I was looking into getting a condenser mic as i herd that's what to get for recording drums. I've currently used a shure mic that we bought years ago for just singing live, it's all i had Haha. Thanks
Sure Tug-it's an MXL V250 . It's on sale ! www.guitarcenter.com/MXL/V250-Condenser-Microphone-1313021014238.gc?cntry=us&source=4WWRWXGP&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIo-qdzq3I4AIVAx6tBh0ZOQJZEAYYASABEgI6cfD_BwE
Wow indeed there is quite an echo i never noticed before.. But i have u cranked through a jbl bluetooth right now too.."The Great And Powerful Oz.. " - turned announcer voice 😬 I have a record of me drumming recorded at Sunset Sound in Hollywood - from1985.. Analog tape still. Drums all sounded great..overhead cymbals sounded great.. Hi-hats tho just sorta muted and there..lacking dynamic range. Check it out..its on here.. "Foreplay/ First Licks" the song "Better Off Dead" is the best example of this...
Hi Terry. What is the exact name for this mic. Is it the MXL 991? Is there any letter behind the number? It looks there are many for sell, quite low price, from 50 to 80€... As I watched/listened to your vids, I think they really are good

Mic is a MXL V250 Condenser Microphone - great video

Hey man, thanks. I think adding a kick trigger and some parallel processing would be a nice finishing touch.
Thanks JD
That’s amazing 😉
Great thanks Terry

Great video Terry. What else would I require to record drums. Thinking just an interface laptop and software? Any recommendations?
focusrite is a fantastic way to go
Awesome Terry!🤘🏽😊🇨🇱
This is like drum church with the reverb. Amen.
yes yes microphones are good but what was the song he was humming at 3:09 ??
The song he was humming was "Tom's Diner" by Suzanne Vega.
@@anthonyb1041 thanks mate !! the song is stuck in my head now :')
can you do a video on showing all you drum sets?

Why dont you send a message to DRUMEO. Sure you could film a fantastic lesson with crew and everything over there!
I wonder if this mic would work on my Yamaha Pocketrak that has an 1/8th inch jack?
Hey terry what interface preamp do you use to power the mic and record them?
the touch has a lot to do with it too. we hear a great sound mix because terry is playing on the drum kit
ive sat behind kits and i cannot make them sound as a good as the owner. a great drummer will make any kit sound good, but the drummers out there with exceptional touch will make kits sound even better. it takes a long time and hard work to get to that point
Thank you Phil!
Really Cool video Terry.
Except from the mic, what else would I need to record my drums ? A USB audio interface and a laptop ?
Where do you get the stand for the microphone
I've had this one for years. Any stand will work. I recommend a beefy one though..

@@MrHavok9 thanx man
What if I have a wall right behind me?
Hang it from a stand above or in front, but try to get the mike as close to that position as possible.
@@bonzoleum I was thinking the wall would change the sound.
The acoustics in your basement are "pretty good"?!? It sounds like the freakin' bat cave! ;-)
I'll be your camera guy!!!!! Provide the camera.
mic over the snare and under the snare?
How about a demonstration instead of yap, yap, yapping?
YTA!
