  • Sage Appliances asked me to review their top notch machine; the Oracle Touch. I've tested this machine for two weeks in my home. In this video I will explain more about the features of this machine and give you my honest opinion.

    I did not get paid for this video, however I was offered to keep the machine. At the time of recording there was no commercial link between Sage Appliances and me.

    Hi Merijn,
    I have the Sage Oracle touch at home and I have some questions about making latte art with it. I really hope you can help me.
    - Could you please tell me the optimal settings you used while making latte art. (Grind size for the grinder, brew time, settings for frothing the milk)
    I use dark roasted coffee beans from illy.
    - Is it possible to make latte art while using the automatic steam wand? If so, what froth settings do you recomment?
    Or is it best to froth the milk manually?
    - The sage comes with a single and double basket. The double basket (22g) for a one single coffee is a way to strong for me. I use the single basket (11g) but can this affect the latte art? What basket do you recommended to use for a single coffee / for latte art ?
    - Is it possible to use baskets from other brands with the Oracle thouch? This way to lower the amount of coffee in the double basket from 22g to 17 gram.
    Thanks in advance,
    Greetings

      Hi f s, first of all my sincere apologies for the extremely late reply. If you haven't solved the problem yet, I'd be happy to help you out:
      - "Could you please tell me the optimal settings you used while making latte art. (Grind size for the grinder, brew time, settings for frothing the milk)"
      - "Is it possible to make latte art while using the automatic steam wand? If so, what froth settings do you recomment?

      - "The sage comes with a single and double basket. The double basket (22g) for a one single coffee is a way to strong for me. I use the single basket (11g) but can this affect the latte art? What basket do you recommended to use for a single coffee / for latte art ?"

      I haven't tried this out, but I believe it should be possible. As long as you use one with a 58 mm diameter.

    Hi Merijn, thank you for the very detailed review. Can you please tell me what grind and extraction time settings did you use for the double espresso that you made?
    Thank you again

    • @merijngijsbers
      @merijngijsbers  4 года назад +3

      Hey Apostolos, thanks for your question!
      For this specific coffee we're usually somewhere between 26 and 34 seconds, depending on the pre-infusion. It's a medium/dark roasted blend of Brazil, Guatemala Colombia and Ethiopia, from het Koffiegenootschap. The grindsetting depends on the coffee you're using (density, roast profile, freshness) and may also vary from machine to machine.
      If you find it helpful I can see if I can do a video on how to set a grinder?
      Hope this helps. All the best!
      Merijn

      @@merijngijsbers Thank You very much for your reply Merijn, I think if you did a video tutorial for this machine with some general rules that apply to different kinds of coffee,would be very useful. I appreciate that every blend is unique but if we have the "general rule" it will be a good starting point to play a bit more with the settings and achieve the desirable outcome!
      Thank You again

    Thanks Merijn for the review - can you advise which coffee beans to use for this machine?

    • @merijngijsbers
      @merijngijsbers  4 года назад +1

      Hi Nigel! I'd recommend to use beans that are not roasted very light. In my opinion a medium or medium-dark roast works better in this machine. After that it comes down to your personal preference :-) Try and see if a local roaster can help you discover the beans that match your taste. Often they organize open cuppings where you can taste beans from different origins or with different roast-styles. I hope this answers your question. If not, feel free to drop me an e-mail!

    Hi,
    which Settings do you use for the milk foam?
    I am always getting one layer with nice textured foam and one layer with hot milk on the ground of the milk can.
    Thanks for you’re reply.

    • @merijngijsbers
      @merijngijsbers  4 года назад

      Hi Chris! First of all apologies for the late reply. It depends on the type of milk that you're using. Usually a foam setting of 7 or 8 should do well for a cappuccino. After frothing, swirl the milk around in the jug until it looks nice and shiny (reflecting like a glossy magazine) before you pour it into your cup. Let me know if this tip helps!

    Can it be used for like in a small cafe of a tea room? Where we would need 100 cups a day?

    • @merijngijsbers
      @merijngijsbers  4 года назад

      Hey Jigar! It could work in a small setting where you would serve max 100 cups a day, however I'd suggest this machine for a small office or boutique store. The machine brings a better quality coffee without the need for a barista, but if coffee is going to be at the heart of your operation I would suggest a professional machine and grinder. Also I would highly recommend to invest in a barista-course or hire well trained staff. All the best, Merijn

    Hi Merijn, is this machine suitable for a small catering company for up to 12 people? Or would that be a mistake! What is your opinion on that? Thanks in advance!

    • @merijngijsbers
      @merijngijsbers  2 года назад +1

      Hi Ramon, thanks for your question. Bear in mind it's a consumer machine, so it's not intended for professional use. I'm not sure if it would void your warranty... That being said; I've done events with approx 100 vistors spread out over the day, and the machine did a great job! So 12 guests shouldn't be an issue. If you're looking for a compact machine that doesn't need a trained barista, but brews better coffee compared to a fully automatic machine, than this is absolutely the best machine on the market for small groups. I hope this helps. Good luck with your catering business!

    What was your take on the froth? I’m not pleased with the amount of foam you get from this machine for a cappuccino.

    • @merijngijsbers
      @merijngijsbers  4 года назад +1

      Hi Gabriel! I was really impressed by the quality and amount of foam. Even with plantbased alternatives to milk. Is your milk cold enough? The cooler the starting temperature is, the more time your machine has to create the froth. Also make sure that you don't exceed 70 degrees Celsius (or 60/65 for plant based), as that will 'kill' your foam. Hope this helps! All the best, Merijn

      Hi فيصل الزايدي ! Breville and Sage are the same machines, but sold under different brand names. Depending on the country the specifications of the models of both brands are the same. If you go to www.sageappliances.com, you can select a country and the site will automatically take you to the right website. I hope this helps!

      فيصل الزايدي Do you mean the ‘Barista Touch’ vs the ‘Oracle Touch’? The coffee part is the same with these machines. They both grind, dose (approx 22 gr) and tamp automatically. The autosteam works a bit different, and obviously the operation machine is different to (Oracle touch has a touch-display). Also the Oracle Touch has a slightly larger water tank.
