Catch & Cook Brown Trout - Fly Fishing at Fernworthy Reservoir and Wild Camping on Dartmoor

  • This is day one of a two day fly fishing and wild camping trip to Dartmoor.
    Day one was on Fernworthy Reservoir, the plan was to try and catch a stocked brown trout to then cook for dinner on Dartmoor. That was the plan but the wind was horrendous and the fishing was hard, as well as my fishing probably not being good enough. I finished the day with a very windy wild camp at Kestor Rock and an MRE meal that wasn't as tasty as a fresh brown trout!

    I fish fernworthy from a float tube, and find in the conditions like you are fishing , the best method is a team with a sedgehog on top dropper , cruncher on middle dropper and bibio on the point. Stripping fast , usually catch ten or more ranging from 8oz to 1lb 8oz with the odd fish up to 2lb 8oz. Most are wild fish with a few of the stocked ones. Most are caught on the sedgehog and if the wind gets up I will put on 3 sedgehogs of different sizes

      Hi Kevin. That’s good advice. I’m a novice in big waters like that and thought I could fish the shallow margins like I do a river. Lesson learned!

    You might not have realised, but that bay is marked as a “no fishing nature reserve” area on the Fernworthy map. Maybe it should read “no fish”.

      @@WestCountryAngler Hi. Now I’m super confused, lol! Was this Fernworthy, or Roadford?

      😂 I’m a muppet. I looked at the wrong map! It was Fernworthy and I was fishing Thornworthy Bay! I fished along Thornworthy Bank. As you can tell I don’t know the waters well!

      Thanks Richard. I got the EHC flies and they are perfect as always. Used them on the urban stream and hopefully on the River Exe this week! 👍. I’m not sure if anything would have helped me at Fernworthy. It wasn’t fun so my heart wasn’t in it but I want to try again. I don’t like defeat!

    Hi Paul, I know you love the dry fly as much as I do but if you are fishing a lake then you might need to be ready to change tactics in hard-going conditions to stand a chance of catching a fish. That looked a reasonably shallow bay you were in so fishing wet using an intermediate line to get out of the wind action on the surface might have been a better tactic.
    Or alternatively if you only had the floater with you, then as a ‘temporary fix’ you could always take a 5-6ft intermediate or slow sinking polytip with you and attach to the end of the floater (turning it into a sink tip line) to get the business end out of the wind and down to the fish; this might have changed the day. There didn’t look to be any surface activity at all so a change of tactics was needed I think. And I suspect your dry fly was probably creating a wake trail on the surface in the wind which as you will know on the river, will definitely put the fish off.
    Obviously had you fished say in deeper areas of the lake then maybe faster sinking lines, different flies and tactics again to find out where the fish are and so on? Whilst my preference; like yours, is always the floating line......on lakes I think it is important to have more than one line to cover the changing conditions, different depths and such like.

      It was a baptism of fire! 😀. I was completely unprepared and outwitted by the place and the wind was sapping the fun out of it for me. I’m going to try again and I’ll definitely be refining my tactics rather than just turning up and arrogantly expecting to catch. It was humbling but I will watch the weather forecast next time. For Dartmoor I focus on missing the rain as I can cope with wind on the rivers but I’d prefer no more than a gentle cooling breeze for a still water 😀. Thanks for the advice though. I will take it on board and thanks for watching me being beaten into submission!

    Hi, can I ask a question? Looking at the weather forecast for this week and how dry it has been recently can I be cheeky and ask for any updates on the water levels in the Dart?

    • @WestCountryAngler
      @WestCountryAngler  4 года назад +1

      Hi Robert. I haven’t seen it myself but looking at the RiverApp the levels seem to be fairly consistent. It’s a pretty good app that canoeists use and I use it for the Exe

    If I park my motorcycle on Dartmoor to go camping, what are my chances of it not getting
    nicked, damaged or Vandalised? Do you know, are motorcycles allowed to be ridden on Dartmoor when camping?

    • @WestCountryAngler
      @WestCountryAngler  4 года назад +1

      Hi David. Unfortunately you have to camp at least 100m from a road and you can’t use motorcycles on Dartmoor. I guess you’d have to push it the 100m which could be tough.
      I tend to park my car at Belstone or Postbridge. I’m sure you could park your bike there and ask a local resident if your bike can be put out the way
