I don’t know I have found great results with a coat of polyurethane, buffing it with car wax, and then spraying ceramic coating on it. Thus far, I’ve never had anything get damaged. Edit: I have only used it on table tops. That way, I have never done it to chairs or anything like that.
If it is similar to automotive ceramic coatings the ceramic coating will act as a protective layer over the wood so if a stain or scratch has occurred the ceramic coating has probably already been removed.
Just a warning. I used the ceramic base and top coat on a few pieces and it worked great. Last week I just used it on a 10’ conference table I am making for a bank and the top coat looked awful. I applied it the same as always, exactly according the instructions and it was uneven and streaky and made the whole table look bad. You could see each pass in the light and it went from a totally even uniform coat to an unprofessional mess. I called Black Forest and asked if there was anything I could do to fix it. I was told “you’re the second person today who’s called with that problem, sometimes that just happens, there’s nothing you can do except sand it down and refinish it” (which is exactly what I ended up having to do). Is it as simple as reapplying another top coat layer every year, two, five with your previous and new ceramic products? Or do you need to resand the surface first and re do the process?
No re sanding is necessary unless there is damage that has went though the finish (like we had on our table). Otherwise you can just go directly to the ceramic!

Hi Dylan, i am going to try your ceramic coating. what ceramic coating would be suitable for putting over the top of a walnut / epoxy river table with odies oil on. I would be grateful if you can advice me. I am new to epoxy river tables but i have made my first and it turned out really good. Can you give me a little advice on sanding, i used my sander at 7500 rmp and move the sander slowly over the epoxy, is this to fast a speed on the epoxy, Cheers Dylan,
So the main difference of the 3 is in the longevity of the coatings? Why not use the longest lasting all the time?..... is it just a price point issue or am I missing something?
Hi guys I used your ceramic product a couple of weeks ago and was wondering if I can reapply the base coat and top coat over a table I already applied ceramic coating to? Thanks Rich @ Ohio River Tables
Does it mean that your ceramic is weak? I have seen a ceramic solution that provides such good protection that a coin cannot scratch the surface of the wood.
ok, to see if I understood your application correctly. I start with a 120, 240, 320 grit sanding to remove imperfections, we clean the dust and put the oil with the pad, I let it pass 20 or 15 minutes and I pass the clean pad again to leave it ready, and let it rest overnight. tomorrow I apply a4000 grain sandpaper and now I start with the application of Gold, later platinum and finally Diamond coat (can I do these layers one after the other? I mean I dont need to leave time between the gold layer, the platinum layer and diamont layer? and after this I let 2 hours pass and another Gold layer is applied?) when did you apply the top layer?, Thanks so much; greetings
Hi Eva! Everything is mostly correct. Just a couple changes! Make sure you wait at least 7 days after oil allocation before starting with the ceramic coating. I used the 4000 grit sand paper in between coats of oil. Time between first coat of oil to second coat of oil is one day. Time between second coat of oil to first coat of ceramic is at least 7 days.
When it comes to Gold, Platinum, and Diamond. You only need one of the three. They are varrying grades if the same product. Gold = 1 year protection Platinum = 2 year Diamond = 5 year You can use any of these options depending on budget and each of them is designed to be combined with the top coat. The time between coats for ceramics is as little as 1 hour!
It’s 100% non-toxic but hasn’t officially been send for food safe certification. Our product meets all the requirements for “food safe” but it is very expensive to get the certification so we have not done it yet. Hopefully soon!
I’m getting confused. Graphene, even in very small % (0.5-1% formulation) is black. Your graphene based is milky white… either you have extremely low % of graphene or non at all. Is there something I’m missing here?
So I am a first time user of your products. I am finishing a live edge Suar table. I have ordered your products as they came out. I would like a fairly glossy but durable finish. So I now have both your ceramic coatings on hand. Base and top coat and I understand the hardness factors for them. Then I got some of your graphene coating as a top coat. So now you have the new Gold-Platinum-Diamond lines. What sequence of coats do I need to use? Do I need a bottle of the diamond coat as a finish coat and what layers do i put under it? Also how many coats of each if you recommend more than 1 coat?
Wow. $600 for a 100ml bottle. That’s about 1/4 a can of soda. I gotta think you guys are using the graphene prices from a few years ago. A couple of years ago, Rice University developed a way to make turbostratic graphene for something like $100 per ton compared to the $100k per ton before that.
Current costs are about $100 per gram of graphene. What you’re speaking of is a scientific theory that unfortunately hasn’t been proven in actually manufacturing yet. Hopefully we get there!
@@BlackForestWoodCo you might want to check Universal Matter. ruclips.net/video/nXzGS8UCBsw/видео.html he gets into pricing a little after 2 min. Not theory. They have been at it and are doubling production a couple times a year, iirc.
you have opened my eyes to different options for some highly visual timber (Australian red cedar) in my bus, do you have an email so I can talk more in depth about what I'm trying to achieve
I would use it! We also still have plenty of it that we’re using in our manufacturing. Even though the previous formula is solvent based it has much less than typical coating to be best suited (as possible) for oil finishes. To get any negative effect from the solvents in our old coating you’d probably have to do 15-20 coats on a single table. It’s typically the automotive coatings that have much more solvents as then are not meant for porous surfaces or oil based finishes.
What is the point of the gold and platinum, if diamond is a five year why put yourself in a position to recoat every year or 2. I will just buy the diamond unless I am missing something, please let me know if I am Thanks and great vid
I don't know if it was a verbal mistake or a physical mistake (said it wrong vs did it wrong), but it seems you put one coat each of diamond and platinum on your last two panels, FYI.
Hi, i have purchased your ceramic coating, i have just put oil on a river table that i have finished, can you advice me please - how long will i need to wait once i have applied the oil before i can apply your ceramic coating, in my case it is odies oil, normally the table can be used after 24 hours, is it ok to use the ceramic coating then.
Hi there, We get hundreds of comments a day and do our best to get to as many as we can, sorry we missed yours. It’s best to let the previous finish fully cure before applying ceramic. In the case of Odie’s oil, this would be about 2 weeks!
I watched this hoping to be able to possibly afford the diamond or find justification for even platinum but at $600 there’s just no way that can be affordable.
Avoid this shit like the plague unless you like destroying your nice finish and throwing hundreds of dollars in the trash. This is not a “water based ceramic” it has solvents which are not consistent between bottles. If you understand the chemistry of “ceramics” at all you will know sio2 is not a solvent or carrier. The application of this is nothing like any other ceramic coating. It’s more like the cheap spray bottle ceramic snake oil you get that doesn’t even last 6 months. If you like streaks, haze and blotchy finish this is the product for you.
It is absolutely water based, no solvents at all. If it was solvent based our shipments would have to be classified as hazardous goods, which anyone who has ordered our product knows they are not. Our old formula was solvent based. Not sure if you misinterpreted something from the video but we are well aware SiO2 is not a solvent, it is the protectant. Also not sure what ceramics you have used but there application is consistent with other products, even in the automotive space. We have no history of you ever making an order so I’m doubtful you’ve even tried the product, however if you have and you’re getting uneven results, we’d be more than happy to teach you how to use ceramic coatings!
Not answering the questions below is a very poor show of customer support. I have just minutes ago finished putting the top coat on my walnut dining table and couldnt be less pleased. Its streaky, blotchy and looks like crap. You have to worknat light speed to work with this product before it dries. The comment during the video that states you dont have to worry about lapping is simply not true. This product is a nice idea but is poor performer i wont be using it again.

I would be grateful if you can advice me. I am new to epoxy river tables but i have made my first and it turned out really good. Can you give me a little advice on sanding, i used my sander at 7500 rmp and move the sander slowly over the epoxy, is this to fast a speed on the epoxy,
Cheers Dylan,
, can you add a second top coat once the first has cured after 24 hours,
Thank you
So you sell a bottle of this with each table and explain to customer how to apply
Yes we do!
I saw you spray your cloth.. the process of ceramic is apply, and then buff- but do you spray your buff cloth first?
Hi. What is the thickness of the finish (oil+ceramic and top coating)?
would this coating be easy to apply to a non flat surface, such as a bowl or vase?
"have a customer slide a charcuterie board".....that seems oddly specific. lol
Hahah may or may not have happened already
Hi, can you use the water base finish product over an existing Rubio topcoat ? Thanks
So the main difference of the 3 is in the longevity of the coatings? Why not use the longest lasting all the time?..... is it just a price point issue or am I missing something?
Yeah it's just the price, the Gold and Platinum are cheaper in the short-term
I do not really understand the product.
Do you coat the surface after oiling?
Can you use these ceramic coatings over hardwax oils like Osmo PolyX?
Hi guys I used your ceramic product a couple of weeks ago and was wondering if I can reapply the base coat and top coat over a table I already applied ceramic coating to? Thanks Rich @ Ohio River Tables
@blackforestwoodco581 what’s the gift?
Does it mean that your ceramic is weak? I have seen a ceramic solution that provides such good protection that a coin cannot scratch the surface of the wood.
Hi are there any distributors in Europe? Thanks.
I like the burls in that table! Beauty
ok, to see if I understood your application correctly.
Gold = 1 year protection
Platinum = 2 year
Diamond = 5 year
You can use any of these options depending on budget and each of them is designed to be combined with the top coat.
The time between coats for ceramics is as little as 1 hour!
Food safe?
It’s 100% non-toxic but hasn’t officially been send for food safe certification. Our product meets all the requirements for “food safe” but it is very expensive to get the certification so we have not done it yet. Hopefully soon!
I’m getting confused. Graphene, even in very small % (0.5-1% formulation) is black. Your graphene based is milky white… either you have extremely low % of graphene or non at all. Is there something I’m missing here?
I've heard of ceramic coating for hardwood floors. Is this the same thing?
This one is specifically formulated for use on tables and / or resin. But same idea yes!
@@BlackForestWoodCo where would I find the type and the amount to go over hardwood floors.
Can I apply it on an oil based polyurethane finished dinner table?
Yes you can!

When the pieces of furniture you are selling are 10k and up it doesn't matter that much.
you have opened my eyes to different options for some highly visual timber (Australian red cedar) in my bus, do you have an email so I can talk more in depth about what I'm trying to achieve
Dylan......Ive got a couple hundred dollars of the old formula, do I need to replace it with this new stuff?
I would use it! We also still have plenty of it that we’re using in our manufacturing. Even though the previous formula is solvent based it has much less than typical coating to be best suited (as possible) for oil finishes.
To get any negative effect from the solvents in our old coating you’d probably have to do 15-20 coats on a single table.
It’s typically the automotive coatings that have much more solvents as then are not meant for porous surfaces or oil based finishes.
@@BlackForestWoodCo ok thanks. Ill use it up.
What is the point of the gold and platinum, if diamond is a five year why put yourself in a position to recoat every year or 2. I will just buy the diamond unless I am missing something, please let me know if I am
Thanks and great vid
Just the price difference, the other two are cheaper options in the short-term
I don't know if it was a verbal mistake or a physical mistake (said it wrong vs did it wrong), but it seems you put one coat each of diamond and platinum on your last two panels, FYI.
would this work on top of osmo oil?
Yes it does!
When and where can I buy it from Sweden?
It will be available in our new international website in about 3 weeks!

Bought your product but you cant reply to a comment
Hi there,
We get hundreds of comments a day and do our best to get to as many as we can, sorry we missed yours.
It’s best to let the previous finish fully cure before applying ceramic. In the case of Odie’s oil, this would be about 2 weeks!
Can't believe I got the first comment lmao
Congrats!
I
Want work on your site
I watched this hoping to be able to possibly afford the diamond or find justification for even platinum but at $600 there’s just no way that can be affordable.
Nice Mullet!
Dylan is ripped
Right???
And your mark up is....?
Hey, maybe take a few minutes and answer some of the questions below.
Dang....could have gotten 10% off. 😅
Charlie's a butt-head. He owes me $5.
He's also cheap, so I don't know if he'll pay you back. He owes me $20 :(
You guy are not chemist. Is this just a rebranded version of some other company?
That's definitely true haha we're not, we hired chemists to create a resin for us to meet our standards
Graphene is very toxic
Not answering the questions below is a very poor show of customer support. I have just minutes ago finished putting the top coat on my walnut dining table and couldnt be less pleased. Its streaky, blotchy and looks like crap. You have to worknat light speed to work with this product before it dries. The comment during the video that states you dont have to worry about lapping is simply not true. This product is a nice idea but is poor performer i wont be using it again.
