I mean replacing the brake fluid every so often is good and often needed especially with these small sealed units as all hydraulic brakes loose oil over time by design as the same oil used for pressure lubricates the piston o-rings and in a full hydraulic system you have a large reservoir up on the break lever so the loss is never noticed but in these sealed systems they have a limited amount of oil so usage loss adds up, but also understanding how these calipers work is also important because the designers though of the oil loss and designed an adjustment screw for that very purpose, the problem is people do not understand these brakes and time and time again i see people using the cable adjuster to tighten the cable as the pads wear down or as oil is lost which leads to the little lever arm loosing travel the more you use the cable adjuster until you have so little your brakes stop working, and here is the thing on these XTeck calipers you are not supposed to use the cable adjuster to adjust for oil loss or pad wear and if you are then you are doing it wrong, the cable adjuster is only there to be used to take up any initial slack in the cable.
How you are actually supposed to adjust these brakes for oil loss and pad wear is by using the little grub screw that is part of the main cylinder piston, if you look at the little arm that the cable bolts to you will see the cylinder piston sticking out and going through the arm and this is the adjustment grub screw, and you are supposed to use a small Allen key to turn this clockwise and as you turn that it moves the piston in pushing more oil into the pad pistons accounting for oil loss and also pushing the pads closer to the rotor to account for pad wear, using the intended grub screw means that the little arm always keeps the same travel distance and you will never bottom out the little lever no mater how warn the pads are.

Thank you for detailed explanation! Lots of people have issues with this calipers. I do change oil or add what it need to make them work good again, every 6 month or a year depending on scooters usage and once is done no need further adjustments aside of pads replacement. Some calipers get damaged and start to leak oil and as they are cheap people just replace.

When I didn’t know how rotors and caliper get in road, I thought as you. But reality disk gets nasty almost as the wheel so little oil it’s nothing compare to what rotor gets expose aside a little oil on it gets smoke the first time the brake gets pressed ;)

Not always but often the issue is actually that the master cylinder piston seal leaks because the dust seal is useless and the downward design of the master cylinder bore collects and retains dirt which ruins the seal which needs to be perfect. Service the item all you like but the pressure release issue returns (loss of lever feel) after a few hours of use again, and again..
The bore of the master cyl is often ok which means a master cylinder seal replacement and rebuild would suffice but i can not find a worthy replacement seal online so please let me know if you find the correct item so i can buy a few. A piston and seal replacement would be preferable but just finding a seal is a trick.. 11mm bore, piston shaft dia is 5mm. Thanks

So does it mean that all XTech HB 100 will have this issue for sure?

    • @claytonbenes7774
      @claytonbenes7774 6 месяцев назад +1

No one could ever say the seal will leak on every caliper. But the design allows dirt and grit to be held in the bore rather than falling out naturally so its gauranteed that the seals will be more likely to be damaged prematurely compared to a better design. If the dust cover sealed well and was made of better rubber then this would stop the dirt etc falling in.

@@claytonbenes7774 I see, that sucks. I was hyped to buy this one to a small jetson bolt pro bike, but now I'll have to look for another kind of brake. Do you have any recomendations on a brake this size that has a better design and it is more reliable, where this issue doesn't happen? (and preferably any other issues)

I am not familiar with other options. My sons kaabo scooter has these so we just do the seal whenever it needs it. I found them on ali for a few bucks. The time it takes is not for impatient people but we dont mind some shed time so all good. I just use any hydraulic oil so its cheap.

    • @esnkaz

This HB-100 calipers are original for bikes and come with the adapter to install on big rotors. I made the first adapters to install on scooters back in 2020 and there after many others started to make adapters according to their scooters. The caliper adapter (bracket) you can check which one fits as they come for mounting on the front and rear and will tell from 140mm to 160mm and like that going up.

@@esnkaz absolutely 100% agree, they are just so cheap.
It's a terrible design _BUT_ they are priced accordingly, so... there's that.
If you're gonna ride around, between 5 - 20mp/h max AND you're somewhat regular about inspecting & maintaining them, these callipers may last you a year or two, maybe even more & I think in terms of economy or "bang for buck;" that's reasonable enough? For me personally though; with most of my riding being at top speed, it took me til my 3rd set of these to realise they aren't suitable for my application.
Under hard or heavy braking, that piston seal would get pinched between the micro-adjuster thread & the actuating arm.
Over time, the seal gets damaged, whether it would tear or split along the seam, then it loses fluid, thus losing hydraulic pressure, which ends in much the same result as you see here in this video.
If I could find some replacement seals I have 4 pairs of these that I could bring back to life but I'm having trouble sourcing them?
I've since purchased a set of fully hydraulic Nutt A5-D & hope to fit them on the weekend if I have time.
