For those debating whether this was originally a Boss song, a Rage song, or even a Guthrie song (which it was not), I wonder how many people notice that the 3rd verse was lifted directly from Joad's monologue in "The Grapes of Wrath." This song stands on its own, but has its greatest impact if you understand what Steinbeck was trying to tell us. Read TGOW and you will be astounded at how eerily relevant it is today--and that's why it is a classic. A deserving recipient of the Nobel Prize.
@@BarbaPamino I thought Spielberg wanted to make a remake. I dont know if it has been done. I am glad John Ford has done it. I watched it again a few days ago. A great movie.
I was young when I got into Bruce, I think I was about 12, back in '92 when Human Touch and Tucky Town came out, I got them both for Christmas and listened to them non-stop. Then I got into his older stuff, like Tunnel Of Love, River and Darkness. All those albums, Lucky Town, Ghost Of Tom Joad, and U.S.A. -- especially now. The only difference is that now, I understand his lyrics. I understand what he is saying, sometimes that is the best part of his music. His words are the finest poetry.
You know I always rolled my eyes at Bruce. Till this. It changed everything. I was always Bob Seger, John Couger, and of course Tom Petty. Never gave a shit about Springsteen. I changed my mind.
Bruce's acoustic work is unmatched. The lyrics, the harmonica, the simplicity resonates deep in the soul. No matter how many times I hear this song, I'm moved. That's why he's The Boss.
Songs cycle through our minds. Some just once. Some never leave. This one is in the latter category. One of my favorites. Love singing it. Try it. Get drunk with it. Get high. It wants to be made into your song.
I have always dreamed of seeing this amazing man play live ever since I was a little girl. I can't believe my wish will come true in March this year. DREAMS DO COME TRUE!
ELE PROMETEU QUE NÃO IRIA FICAR MUITO TEMPO SEM VIR NO BRASIL ! JÁ FAZ 10 ANOS A ULTIMA VEZ QUE AQUI ESTEVE ! AGUARDAMOS O THE BOSS NOVAMENTE NO BRASIL
For Jason.. 21st century Tom Joad.. We will miss you so much but we will never forget what you did for the poor, the frightened and the lost.. God Bless you J
@eyewall41 totally agree, both songs are powerful in their own ways, I think rages appeals to a younger generation, which now is in their 20's and 30's. Where as bruces was meant for the 20's and 30's right off the start and now its for the 40's and 50's
,,,,Well the highway is alive tonight, but nobodys kiddin nobody about where it goes.I´m sittin down here in the campfire light,, With my own ghost,,,, woooooow that great song !!
Thank you for writing songs that touch our hearts and shake up our souls. Thank you more than anything else for being you. I think the Boss is a veritable Rock and Roll prophetic genus. Please continue to communicate. .
If you ever see this Bruce, amazing, full of depth and feeling. Im still in another world humming this in my mind and ive just enjoyed it for the fifth time, Gonna check out other versions apparently live is pretty good too. Kinda touched my soul..... the way the mouth organ wails ..haunting balad.......
Heard him interviewed about it, he was seeing a lot of issues around California at the time and felt that was where the rest of the US was going, he was so spot on, California became the template for the western world, tech billionaires and rapidly increasing poverty.
I love how ppl say this "VERSION" Of this Song .That makes me laugh ! Its NOT a version ! BRUCE wrote it and performs it like he WANTS to ! ANYONE doing it AFTER him is doing" A VERSION" of BRUCE'S SONG !Period ! Its lifted from BRUCE'S HEART and Soul !
Brilliantly deduced and spot on. TGOW was written by a visionary who understood that we would, someday, repeat the disaster. We as a specie do two things better than all the rest; we continually shit in our nest and repeat mistakes because we fail to learn from past experiences or listen to those who have "been there, done that" There is a reason God does not allow us to live forever; we couldn't stand to be so disgusted so long: the frustration would be unbearable.
Absolutely agree. I teach American Lit. and my students, no matter 13-18, continue to read aloud, with enthusiasm, of Steinbeck's words. That is a testament unto itself.
"got a one way ticket to the promised land.. a hole in your belly and a gun in your hand.." Bruce can just keep the lines coming.. A storyteller.. the finest one I have ever had the pleasure to hear...
This version is a great example of the folk process. As Steinback said Paraphrasing on When Woody wrote his tune "Tom Joad" "That little bastard he took my 2 hrs movie and put it in a 2 minute song". They were great friends.
@profittlich Pretty much the whole album this song was taken off of. 'The Ghost of Tom Joad'. Also try his other albums titled 'Devils and Dust' and 'Nebraska'. All three albums are songs similar to this one.

And Steinbeck actually used foto reports by Dorothea Lange and Arthur Rothstein from the Dust bowl.
Inspired by the script. Not directly lifted. Though I've only seen the Henry Fonda version. Is there another?
Silly me I forgot it was a book hahah. Is it written that poetically in the novel?
It was written by Bruce Springsteen. You can easily look it up.
@@BarbaPamino I thought Spielberg wanted to make a remake. I dont know if it has been done. I am glad John Ford has done it. I watched it again a few days ago. A great movie.
The boss is...the boss!!
I love this man.
From Cesena ( italy )
This is the best Springsteen album ever! He is simply amazing when he plays this style... Right up there with Neil Young and Bob Dylan. So intence!
Le top du top

Just magnificent....as far as I am concerned Springsteen has no equal in the music world. The consumate songwriter of our time.
Beautiful - so proud to say that's my dear friend, Marty Rifkin playing pedal steel. Simply gorgeous.
your friend is one of the best pedal steel guitar players in the world, during the Seeger Sessions tour he was incredible.
Just magic...thanks bruce..
Bruce Spingsteen - the raconteur of everything in America that is not glamour, glitter, welfare, money, and success.

I'm shivering.......
i really got the chills so great.
Truer words have never been spoken
Eureka again...lol tks DomQuin! The song, Bruce and this studio are wonderful.
Wonderful
This song was written in 1995, looks like Bruce was able to see about 15-20 years into the future.
Heard him interviewed about it, he was seeing a lot of issues around California at the time and felt that was where the rest of the US was going, he was so spot on, California became the template for the western world, tech billionaires and rapidly increasing poverty.
No he was talking about the past- which repeats itself over and over.
It's been going on ever since we arrived and stole this country from Mexico and the native Americans.
For anyone interested in the interview to which 1davidcampbell referenced: ruclips.net/video/rF9jQHwRbDk/видео.html
@@jonncockrell3606 Not even the past repeating. The present is always the same.
I hit the Like button after 17 seconds. I am such a tart!

Best version of the ghost of tom joad
You're a great artista Bruce, and a good person. I'm sure
Thank you The Boss.
I love this
What a peace give me this song. I don't know the reason.
Scholarship at it’ height! Guthrie, Dylan and Springsteen! Just magnificent, no
greater honor to the migrants of The Dust Bowl, and John Steinbeck!
Absolutely agree. I teach American Lit. and my students, no matter 13-18, continue to read aloud, with enthusiasm, of Steinbeck's words. That is a testament unto itself.
great insight, i agree completely. i always sensed that sort of difference, but couldn't really put my finger on what it was. well said.
Great song, great artist. He can rock it with Tommy Morello or sing it like a hymn.
Holly hell, this song is so powerfull!
"got a one way ticket to the promised land.. a hole in your belly and a gun in your hand.." Bruce can just keep the lines coming.. A storyteller.. the finest one I have ever had the pleasure to hear...
Beautiful💞💞
The real studio version is the best - Anyway it's the same song . Love it !
This version is a great example of the folk process. As Steinback said Paraphrasing on When Woody wrote his tune "Tom Joad" "That little bastard he took my 2 hrs movie and put it in a 2 minute song". They were great friends.
Simply Beautiful...
awesome!!
Música de muita qualidade!
There's something about when brings says those words, then breathe's life in the harmonica. No one else could do that.
Except Dylan
Great version
@Totyi
absolutelly well said and right!!
I had to listen to this for school.
Incredible !!!
it's THE album !!! the best one ;-)
Crap!!! This is extremely rare. Thank you so much! Im so subbing.

Bruce !!!!!!!
Wonderful video - Thank you for uploading !!!
It's a stand out album. As we Brits say it is certainly 'top drawer' material. Tunnel of Love is close in second place..
In my opinion the best version of this is the live version with tom morello.
