Why Red Bull’s surprising 2024 car should scare its F1 rivals

- Red Bull has flipped the script in F1 launch season by revealing a surprisingly different 2024 car that has some ideas its fierce rival Mercedes has now abandoned.
This was a handy time for Red Bull to buck its usual trend of not showing a real car at its launch, as seeing some striking RB20 details helped prevent the launch from being overrun by the controversy surrounding team principal Christian Horner.
Horner is the subject of an external investigation started by Red Bull’s parent company in the wake of serious allegations. He’s continuing in his role while this takes place, and was front and centre at the car launch.

Stop with the rumors on Horners personal life. It's scummy.
Newey saw the W14 and was like: "I can fix him."
This comment literally makes no sense😂. They didn’t copy the w14 concept. They just took certain parts from it and implemented on there car
The RB20 has Sidepods, just vertical inlet
@@SwaggySimon20 "taking parts and implementing it" is pretty much the definition of copying, no? not saying it's a clone by any means, but they literally copied certain parts and added to their new car
@@fqeagles21 So did the W14 tbf.
@@patrikmediayeah that exactly what I meant. This original comment and every other delusional rb fan in this comment section is trying to make it seem like newey took the w14 concept and made it work; even though that’s far from the case.
Newey really said to Mercedes: Skill issue
Hold brother...no real running yet
Laughed way too hard at this as a gamer

The W13 and W14 just needed a stable platform... and given that RB had checked that with the floor and suspension set-up, they thought 'let's give that a try'...
Imagine if Red Bull remove theirs sidepods at the Bahrain testing lmao
Would be a sight to see
I mean they did that shit in 22 when going from barcelona to bahrin testing so good chance 😂😂
They won't. Sidepods serve a purpose. They guide the air to the diffuser and house a couple of radiators.
That would be the ultimate dunk flex on Mercedes.
Can you actually imagine.... Mercedes at that point will lose their shit
Ain't no way that meme where Adrian Newey was looking closely at Mercedes W14 as if he was scanning and think "I can fix her" was real 😂
Maybe he saw the meme, and was like: "LOL, hold my beer"
Mercedes W14 looked like Red Bull X2014 Standard Car in terms of car design.😅
Maybe someone from the RB team leaked that meme and showed the finger to everyone saying this is what we are on to for the next year 😅
Lies again? Causeway Point USD SGD
Imagine the RB 20 doesn't work. Then Red Bull just brings back the RB 19 and continues to dominate.
Sounds like a plan 😂
That’s not gonna work, McLaren, Mercedes, Ferrari and maybe Aston’s 2024 cars would definitely be faster than the RB19. AND I WAS RIGHT, I CALLED IT.

Good one!
Horner said “change your fucking car” and Adrian said “hey can I try”
Its so weird that right when litrrally every team is copying the RB19 with the underbite sidepods, redbull does the opposite and creates a car like the W14 with vertical intake, an overbite etc
I made the same comment on F1's post on IG. The nose too!
@@FueledUpBrandMedia the nose is definitely not the final one you should wait for testing
McLaren has an overbite on their side pod iirc, assuming that bit of the car is as it will appear in testing
Not literally every team. McLaren have an overbite.
They are up to something if you ask me. Maybe there will be a radical change at testing.
Red Bull are so dominant the 2024 car is the result of a bet between Horner and Newey, where Horner bet Newey even he couldn't fix the Mercedes.

I couldn't believe they took so much inspiration from Mercedes. I guess Mercedes were on the right track in some areas.
Merc were chasing peak downforce levels in 2022. It's very possible that RB had the same numbers but went about it in a different way. They also may have chosen this design because they need a middle ground car before 2025 as they have already stated they started shifting resources to.
@@aaawac2174 yeah, I'm curious to see how much different the car looks by the first race, and how they perform with this design. I can't imagine Mercedes will be too pleased if Red Bull does well with those ideas, now that they more or less abandoned them to appease Hamilton, who won't even be there a year from now...🤣
@hangingchad_ So they didn't even appease Hamilton. He wanted the seat moved back by 15 cm, and they only moved it back by 2 cm. Something else said during the reveal is RB said the shakedown they did yesterday is matching their simulations very well. Which could also mean dangers for the rest of the grid. I really don't see Merc in the fight this year. If they are it'll be towards the back of the AM, SF, Mc fight for 2nd
@@hangingchad_ If Mercedes have ditched certain design philosophies, it's because they thought that was the best option to ensure their competitiveness in 2024. Whether it is, or not, remains to be seen. But it would've been nothing to do with appeasing a driver, even though that narrative clearly suits your fantasies 🤣
Mercedes don’t really improve in the 2nd half of the season - arguably their most competitive whole team performance was Australia (pre red flag) with zero pods
When Adrian Newey has achieved his setting, the opposition starts sweating.

Feel like the race is the main F1 channel to watch for news better than Sky Sports by far
I would agree! The Race and P1 with Matt and Tommy are my go to channels for F1 news. Sky Sports F1 is just garbage but that is just my opinion.
Sky sports F1 has been a propaganda channel for while - it’s just opinion now not journalism
Sky who?
They just claimed RedBull are copying Merc.
Seriously?
The Race have some good videos here and there but most are extremely padded stuff that is already known, like a 60 seconds article padded to a 10mins video.
Sky Sports F1 just sucks, Craig Slater tries to make everything into bs drama.
Funny how most cars start looking like The RB18 and 19. Just to have Red bull do something completely different with RB20 😂
RB: "Are you not entertained!"
Bravo, especially when RB is the last to reveal, save the best for last indeed.
Mike Elliott is watching this and he's like "I told you guys".
Not necessarily. The proof of the pudding will be how it performs on track.
You're probably right. Mercedes always maintained that the exposed floor solution gave huge advantage in the CFD and simulations. But they couldn't get it to perform on track in the same way.
If RBR can make the concept on track, Elliot will be vindicated, and Mercedes will probably get the old drawings out of the cupboard for 2025.
@@nickxcore74 Yeah, I know, I was being sarcastic. I hope Mercedes beats RB but I doubt it.
If this car works as interned, it'll be a huge slap in the face to other teams!
That's refreshing...
Just when the other teams think they have the answers, Red Bull seems to change the questions. RB seems just in another realm 🤯
Mercedes: "We poured so much time and money into this idea. It just doesn't work."
Red Bull: "Maybe not for you."
Mercedes engineers scratching their heads after rb launch
It would be even funnier if Red Bull change their direction but roll out with no sidepods at Bahrain...

you are SO FAST with this video. wow.
Every other team: "RB19 looks good, we'll have that please"
Adrian: "All of you guys got a lot of improvement from your cars last year, let me use all your upgrades to upgrade our cars"
Newey saying that they werent expecting a dominant car last year, and that this car has made some leaps forwards- COLD
Newey said he considered the zero pod concept and thought it had potential but thought the waterfall sidepods were better. Now it looks like he's found a way to do both and that should probably worry the other teams.
I mean there is a sidepod that's the thing, let's not get confused. It's just that they've used a verticle air intake instead of a horizontal one. I think that quote was in reference to the 22 Merc.
If Newey walks around your car and starts taking notes, be aware....be very aware
I guess Mike Eliot saw that and tried to convince Toto that Newey's intrest must mean they were doing something right.
Now Mike is gone and If Bahrein wil prove Mikes concept to work on the Red Bull we will hear a frustrated Toto yelling " no Mikey no...this is so not right... !!!!!
Did I hear my name?
perhaps he was actually writing what not to do 🤔
That's a lot of fanfiction
Zero sidepod doesn't work and I can't see how it would work. Besides of cooling aspects you need sidepods to redirect the air, create areas of low pressure, etc. Unless F1 races are just on a straight with no corners I can't imagine a zero sidepod design working.
@cidiracing7481 The might be too draggy and they'll be forced stiffened the suspension but compromise in the mid/ high speed corners
😂redbull said sike in a big way
So RB and McLaren are the only 2 teams to go with 'overbite' sidepod inlets. Have they both spotted something the other teams havent? Time will tell.
So this means that Asto Martin will change their inlet design to match the RB inlet design by the second or third race....
If works and they could do if fast, be it.
😂
😂 Copy that copy that, they will copy everything except redbull sponsors logo
@@vigneshwarrajc6629They share HUGO and Red Bull has a BOSS sponsor which is the full name of the same company if I'm not. wrong.

This is either going to go really really well for RB or really really bad. I cant wait for the first practice session.
Even if it fails badly, they can just bring back the RB19 and still dominate everybody lol
Front wing will probably change but I wasn't expecting this to be such a different car
The best part about it is, it shuts up all the discussions about VCARB copying redbull
Just to be clear because everyone seems to be massively surprised that the RB20 Is so different to the 19 red bull said last year they had only built an average car they could do so much better and they specifically said that the RB20 would not be an evolution of the 19 it would be a revolution and they clearly meant it
I still have no idea what it is that Horner allegedly did and yet the allegations are “very serious”. Sick of hearing about it, until actual evidence is presented it’s an obnoxious smear campaign.
We will never be told the truth, it's a stitch up 😡
Imagine that the RB19 wasn't as good as people thought, but it was the drivers who were so dominant. Everyone else has now based themselves on the RB19, while Reb Bull has simply developed their car further and took designs from Mercedes, for example, because they were better in that area. If that is the case, then Red Bull will appear with even more dominance.
So, imagine that Perez is really the 2nd coming of Michael Schumacher and Verstappen is actually Dutch Jesus?
Max actually being jesus would explain why he's so goddamn quick in the wet@@invisiblemango3536
I do love how everyone is saying now RB is going the zero pod route when they're clearly not!
there is still a huge amount of sidepod area! The only thing that different is the orientation of the radiator inlet! This has allowed them more freedom with the shape and size of the sidepod undercut as they are no longer constrained by having a fixed width and depth to take account of for the sidepod inlet.
Mercedes' 'zeropod' philosophy was to have little to no horizontal surface (perpendicular to the road surface), whereas this has quite a lot!
The only direct carry over (if you can call it that) from the w14 is those shoulder canons. I can only assume they are there to provide flow management and downwash to the beam wing as they appear to create a gulley similar to the 'bath tub' sidepods from the ferrari F1-75.
It’s a risky move but as you pointed they had an advantage in planning ahead of the RB20. Waiting for Bahrain and see how it goes,
People do forget how the RB19 dominated, teams moving to that direction is a clear indicator that RB shouldn’t overlook. Expecting more competition this season.
I don't understand why The Race is so fixated on Honor on a fucking car launch. Can you just focus on the damn car? So fucking annoying.
Like Mercedes said last year, The zero side pods wasnt the main problem with the car, it was just the easiest to see and blame. Their problem was with chassis control and the floor
That "I can fix her" meme with Newey looking at W14 was real roflmao 🤣
Newey out here playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers 😂
Red Bull : We gone beat Mercedes with their own car in 2024.
The ulimate troll move
It’s hardly like the W14 to be fair. Just because Newey took a few ideas from it, doesn’t mean that it’s fundamentally a very similar car. Newey is the best in the aerodynamicist in the business, I’m sure he takes inspiration from a lot of different ideas from other rivals.
The Race never leaves a moment untouched to push Horner under the misconduct bus..
just as people missed what made the w11 so amazing (thinking it was DAS, but really it was the rear suspension) people are doing the same here, thinking the key is the front of the sidepod.
at 4:36, you can see that redbull has managed to put 2 external vents, up from 1 last year. these are likely pulling air from inside the car, essentially blowing the diffuser, leading to more downforce and less drag since they can run less draggy wings and beam wings
I mean i dont think it is surprising, they probably got close to its performance ceiling with its current concept so it makes sense for them to try something different to extract more performance
Adrian Newey and the Red Bull Engineers know exactly what they're doing. They already have a few evolutions of the car, each one better than the last, but they won't go for the best evolution because it would get copied for next year and the field would close up to them. They already have the 2025 car ready and by the time people copy the 2024 Red Bull, they will already have something better ready to go.
Amazing video guys! The comparisons with RB19 photos is gorgeous.

The side pod is not the only part that was hindering Mercedes performance
Do you all know what the side pod is ?
@@justincharles6585Why do you?…..This Red Bull doesn’t appear to have zero pods like the Mercedes from 2022 or the 2023 W14 launch with small inlets.
Understandable, everyone pays a lot of attention to the upper surfaces, but I think RB have an astounding underfloor advantage that gives them most of the performance. The upper surfaces are secondary, which is why RB has left this till now.
I think people have forgotten that Mercedes did say their simulations suggested their zero pod packaging showed much greater downforce but real world testing they had to much porpoising to keep the car stable.
It wasn’t that zero pod was bad aerodynamically, it was Mercedes didn’t know how to use it in the real world.
It’s possible Adrian Newey realised first get a strong understanding of how to have a stable suspension to control the inevitable porpoising of ground effect cars in most situations and then aim hard towards the best aerodynamic solution.
Whereas Mercedes went aerodynamics first but fucked up on the suspension to handle the porpoising.
That’s my guess. Come race day and it’s likely we’ll see RB has been trolling us and they have even more pods on top of pods. 😛

Newey always appreciated the concept of 'zero sidepods', he's always struck me as 'agnostic' in that sense of a team's identity and philosophy intertwining and seeing the ideas as they are. Seems he has tried to get the best from both approaches and harmonise it to get something beyond what either approach could do by itself. Resulting in a new approach to the overall aero package that some teams will only now learn about a couple races into the new season, whereas Redbell and Newey have had a whole seasons worth of data to learn from.
