A friend of mine brought Azul for our social evening. I rolled my eyes thinking this is gone be one of those family games for 20 mins. We literally didn't touche any other game that day. The balance and depth with this one are on point.
Paul’s solo reviews are reaching dangerously high levels of quality and entertainment.
This game was absolutely prototyped using Starbursts
Huge opportunity for cross marketing here - Azul - the Starbursts edible version.

Instead of falling to the floor, they fall in to your mouth.
Or mahjong.

Considering I was sold on the game around 30 seconds into the rules explanation, and was ready for the video to end, that mid review turnaround gave me a heart attack.
Yeah, I've played the Hexes Of Hyperspace. You do not want to go down the Fudge Portal!
Warning: Candles and board games don't mix. Last month my Pandemic Legacy 2 rulebook caught on fire on a candle on a table. Fortunately someone spotted it quickly and only a small corner burned away but it could have been MUCH worse. On the bright side it gave the rules a nice "see what I found after the apocalypse" look which fits the theme, I wouldn't recommend setting board games on fire normally though. :)
Lol that mid review turnaround scene🤣
Hi Paul, can you put me in touch with that handsome fellow who taught you The Hexes of Hyperspace? I'm itching to assemble a Spectrum of Sadness.
Sounds like it might do well on Kickstarter! *being serious*
This comment made me laugh so...hard. 👍🏻
oh my goodness that was probably one of the best reviews i have ever seen. which is saying a lot when considering su&sd massive back catalog. love it to pieces, please never stop :)
By the looks of how that date end, it doesn't look like Paul will be spending a night on the tiles
“My table is on fire” is something I didn’t expect to hear today.
The turnaround had me laughing way too hard! Glad to hear all of this. I was really looking forward to getting my hands on this game. Apparently I better watch out in case it starts riding skateboards or hanging out near bins...
Nice job as always. But we *need* a full review of Hexes of Hyperspace!
These guys are hilarious in a sea of very boring reviewers/play throughs.
Honestly you're so right.
Almost every sketch they do makes me actually laugh while watching, and not many reviewers can keep that up.
This cured my spectrum of sadness.
Never change Paul, you magnificent bastard. It was the funniest thing I have seen in a long while.
This might be my favorite SU&SD episode to date. And that's saying a lot.
That was special. Never laughed like that during a review.
Never stop doing this. Never.
:(
Oh man that mid review turn around was the best one yet!
Fantastic job Paul!
Easily one of my favorite review, especially if you have seen previous SUSD reviews. One of the greatest mid-review turn arounds ever, the puberty voice, the candle shadows, the "hole-ness," my table is on fire so I will continue with the review while I try to blow out the fire. OMG, greatest review ever!!!!
Those open flames next to a bunch of cardboard made me incredibly anxious the entire time.
(Agree though. Azul is marvelously elegant and fun.)
Wait... was this the first positive SU&SD mid-review turnaround?!
One of the best reviews I've ever seen. Amazing work, Paul.
Paused video halfway through. Ordered Azul. Watched rest of video. Now will swamp the comment feed with emoji thumbs for Paul: 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Yay Mid-Review Turnaround!I love it when you have those :)
"MID REVIEW TURNAROUND!!!!" - Excellent work haha!
oh god, put down a plate under those candles!!!
At the mid-review turnaround, RUclips smash-cut an advertisement for Domino's pizza in one of the funniest algorithmic accidents I've ever experienced. 10/10, would watch a 3 year old review of Azul again!
Ohhh shittttt that radical mid-review turnaround gave me some gnarly whiplash yo!
It's PAAAAUUUUUULLLLLL!!!!!!!! Let's put that game on pause and talk about those candles directly on the table. That's all! The candles melting on the table gave a sense of relaxing freedom.
Absolutely AMAZING mid review turnaround!
My new favorite Paul video
"My table is on fire."
Well that's my favorite SU&SD review
it's good....
but have you seen these already:
* troyes
* arboretum
* mafia de cuba
I feel like there are many where the reviews and humor outclass this one
Someone help Paul with blowing out all those candles before his house burns down!!
I really like this review, as it tells you everything you must know about the game to come to a decision to buy (or not to buy). I also like its abundance of alliterations.
Jolly good vid. Wife beats me every time in Azul, works great with two but rewards evilness, every time
Hands down the best review on Shut Up & Sit Down, and quite possibly the whole Internet
Games I want to eat: 1. Roll for the Galaxy. 2: Azul
the way you described the pieces made me crave candy... no, cant explain why
Tantalizing Tactically. I can't wait to use it my conversations.
"Other. People."
The chuckle from the beardy gamer as he warms to his, uh, theme is comedy gold.
Man, check out those time lapse candle shifts. A beautiful video for a beautiful game.
Your description of Hexes of Hyperspace really sounds more like a Euro.
Yep. That's why I don't like Euros. As soon as I hear the phrase "worker placement" I'm out.
That was the best mid-review turnaround EVER! 🤣
Hey! I live in Chimbarongo, were Cono Sur winery is.
That skit about 'abstract games' is basically me every time I've _tried_ to play Azul over the last 3 years of owning the game.
Great review, Paul. Sad to see you go.
Paul reviews are the best reviews
I was laughing so hard at that mid review turnaround! 😂
Bugs me that the white tile spaces on the board aren't where the blue ones are. They're so different in appearance that they should get the uninterrupted diagonal.
Also, hooooo boy that turn-around montage. Nicely done. :)
I always thought abstract games tended to have fewer rules, but more depth in gameplay, like Chess, Checkers, Othello, Blockus, etc. Not that I don't appreciate the skit, but it sounds more like someone describing Terra Mystica or Mage Knight than an abstract.
We really like this game. It fits the fun and hard-to-fill cool down (or warm up) niche by being neither too long nor too rules intensive. It's as fun and light as you want it to be (see comments about "hate drafting") and as Paul said, is a really gorgeous, tactile game.
Great Review, I love Paul's stuff, the turnaround was spectacular.
Best review I ever seen about an abstrakt game. Well done Paul!
On this episode, Paul discovers why candle holders exist!
Great review from Paul, very entertaining and exposes the aspects of the game that would be important for someone to consider before buying. Thanks for the energetic creativity!
This is a modern classic for a reason!
The game can be a bit difficult to explain but since it is so fast, you can just play trough a round and after that you are faced with deceiptevely simple game with huge amount of depth that the whole family can enjoy! Hell, the preteen in the table kept asking for another round
While the theming is pretty weak it is very beautiful and nice to the touch which makes it easily worth the money IMO
My mind immediately went "Fresco" when I saw the white pawn in that faux-abstract game skit. I might've played too many games.
I came here because of an assignment (yea i know right?) went away laughing hard. tnx!
SU&SD has somehow become my second favorite youtube channel, right behind Achievement Hunter.
We'll miss you, Paul.
10:27 -- the gang sign, LOL
RUclips says this video is about sixteen minutes long but it lasted nearly twenty because I spent three minutes laughing at 0:49
“My table is on fire!”
I appreciate the absolute ensemble of alliteration in this artistic approach to aristocratic anarchy.
The first game of this we bumbled through and I wondered why there were even that many spaces on the bottom of the board. The second game... the second game there was lots of swearing as everyone figured out how to be as cruel as possible.
Loved the flip out of this game at PAX Unplugged. It is like a perfect bagel. So simple at first glance, but holds incredible depths and complexity within that simplicity.
"a disconnected peppering of porcelain" sounds like something that might happen after a bad curry. Azul you PLAYA! love it. Great review.
Anyone keen to play the first abstract game Paul started the review with? Just needs a little work is all.... All time best ever board game review too!!
Agree completely with this review. Azul is absolutely brilliant and I’ve somehow managed to get my not-really-a-boardgamer boyfriend to play this with me almost every night in a row for a week. I love it and it’s going to be the death of me.
Did the version he reviewed not have the other side of the player board?
Probably most entertaining review on RUclips! Better than movies :D Well done OMG
I was not prepared for this game to be as great as it was. The rules fit on a single triple folded sheet, the scoring takes exactly one round to understand, and the possibilities open up before you just after you finish each game. It plays very different, though not necessarily worse, with each player count. I will absolutely be buying this, much to my wallet's dismay.
INTO THE FUDGE PORTAL!!!!
The Spiel des Jahres was won right here
I was right! Somebody at Plan B send this great man a cake or something
That turn around....loved it!
Paul's reviews both entertain and FRIGHTEN me!!!
Balanced like a tightrope walkers checkbook.
Brilliant
BEGIN THE INCREMENTS
Hey what happened to the sound on the mid review plot twist????
I was not ready for the mid-review turnaround.
Really likes eggs.
You could not have scripted that thrice failed attempt at extinguishing the candle anymore perfectly for this review.
That dubstep break! ROFLM!
While the game couldn't be less interesting to me, the shift point in the video, yes, that one, was hilarious! Well done!
Paul out of left field with the funniest segment in recent memory. My goodness, that was unexpected.
This really is the best review on the internet.
I need to play this again
If you ever had the (dis)pleasure to lay painted mosaic with others, this isn't an abstract game at all. You have to finish your design with the supplies in the tile-trays (...and did you just take the last of the blue-on-white petal ones you bloody muppet) certainly will cause flashbacks.
I initially passed on this game when it came out, but played it at a FLGS the other day and it was an instant purchase.
The initial dig on abstract games felt more like a dig on thematic games. Abstracts are typically on your move place a tile. I didn't quite get That?
Azul looks interesting though.
Yeah, that bit made no sense to me either. Abstracts, at least all the ones I've played, have very simple rulesets.
The mention of subphases and stuff really made me think more of certain wargames like Star Fleet Battles and Advanced Squad Leaders. SFB specifically has 32 individual "impulses" per turn, complex energy and movement management, admin, etc.
There is no Dana, only Azul 🤪
Is Hexes of Hyperspace going to win the game of the nanosecond award?
You said Azul with the perfect accent. Kudos.
Wow, I came for an explanation of how to play the game and ended up laughing my ass off and subscribing. What a great video review!!! 👍
This is not an abstract game. This is decorating a bathroom. Smash tiles and all.
Azul proved to be surprisingly simple and yet really strategic for my family. Easy and simple for kids to pick up, yet deep enough to keep adults involved also.
Those tiles look too edible to be safe!
