I had purchased the G1 two years ago for $120 (USD) and it had 4 gigs of ram and a 250 gig hard drive. Upgraded the hard drive to a 1TB SSD and 16 gigs of ram. The last thing I did was changed the keyboard this year. It runs great for the price and very reliable.

i have this laptop with a core i5 and 16gb of ram, i would recommend you to get windows 10 on it, mine came with windows 7, but i upgraded to windows 10 and i find it to be a good bit faster and even better battery life, i also upgraded 7200rpm hdd to a 1tb ssd and a m.2 to a 512gb witch windows is on, this laptop definitely a great machine. my next upgrade would be a 1920x1080 screen, i don't mind the 1600x900 screen, but the viewing angles suck and i would prefer a 1080p display

You will never have good viewing angles unless you have an IPS screen.

do you have 840 G1? planning for m.2 installation. does it support 512GB ? what M.2 you installed in it? SATA or PCIe? what length ie 2242?
I have an 840 g2, and I love this barebone design too, All parts of laptop are replaceable and easy to find in web. I have and 745 g2 before and only changed motherboard, wifi card and smartcard board to convert it to 840 g2. In mine I have an sata ssd but next upgrade is an nvme ssd, I don't know if this will work but I will try.
Best budget laptop in the $350-450 range. Best build, best keyboard, great ports, great processor and battery life, but average screen(although bright).
You can buy them even cheaper from University / College Surplus locations. I just bought one for $100, just have to put a hard drive in it.
Wow, that sounds like an absolute steal. For anyone wanting an all around laptop if they could get one of these for anywhere below $300 there's really no better deal.

Cpu soldered
Hard to change TIM on the cpu
No numpad
No fullhd screen
Overall those cons are always with thin and light really

Great for some photo editing my dslr shots in adobe lightroom and photoshop on the go because of the sd card slot

that is a beast computer, was looking at a used one but at 265 USD still, can't justify it as a secondary machine to primarily watch videos and surf the web only getting 6-10 hrs of use a week.

View angles of the screen? Resolution of the screen? Didn't this range have a touch interface, what about that?And maybe some comments on the touchpad....
Viewable from all sides. 1366x768. Some models have touch some don't. Nice touchpad with touchpad lock and very responsive touchpad.
ive played company of heroes, command and conquer 4, league of legends, and most strategy based games, i would try rolling back the video driver or updating it if it can be, or try updating bios that helps.
Hi, I have elite book i7 6gen 8gb ram. It is literally brand new and I've charged it too 100%. When I unplugged it it appears that 99% battery will last me for 3 hours 10 minutes only. I've tried to reduce the brightness and to run a battery troubleshooting (through the HP Support Assistant) and I've also checked the battery health after running an energy report and it seems to be 100000% healthy(if that makes sense). Do you have any suggestions why is that battery appearing to last me for only 3 hours if it's in full working condition?

Hello, can someone help me please.. I have recently bought a new HP elitebook 840 g3 and since turning it on it's fan runs constantly and it is very laud. Should I return it or there is some easy solution how to fix it ? Also , the battery life it is very short, and it's indicative hours fluctuate even I do not change any settings. I would appreciate if someone could reply to this query.
TheGabryte I would definitely return it to the store. the fan on mine would run sometimes but only when I was using multiple applications. also the battery life should be consistent not fluctuating. I would download core temp and see the temp. shouldn't be higher then 45 Celsius. also try opening the bottom it should be easy and see if the fan is obstructed or has dust or loose cabling around fan. HONESTLY I think it's a motherboard issue. I would return and save yourself the headache.

How do I connect this to my TV? It's a flat-screen, HD TV with HDMI ports, but not a smart TV. I have purchased a DVI - HDMI converter, and have been struggling for two hours.

4k no, im gonna be doing a review soon for HP Pavilion I will be testing the 4k, but you can do everything but 4k with this laptop I would say

Looks like a G1.
The keyboard is all black. On G2-G4 keys are black but the "background" is silver. The lid is black on G1 and G2 vs silver/grey on G3 and G4. G3 and G4 also have B&O seakers. Just to mention some visible differences.

+@@arqgus2471 Well, I am no expert on these. I have a 850 G4 and an old 840 G1. However there are many different modells of every version out there. For example many different modells of the 840 G1. Different regarding harddrive (SSD or HDD and its size), processor (i5 or i7 and different clock speeds) and other stuff. In general, besides the small visual changes, newer generations have faster processors. But remember that for example an 840 G2 can be different than another 840 G2. To compare them you need the version number. If you know the version number you might compare them here www.gadgetsnow.com/compare-laptops
All of them seem well built and looks good in my opinion. Now there is even a G5 available with a bit different design.

i never tested.....maybe in low settings as some games even though they say they need a video card might still support it but it will be VERY SLOW, these are the minimum requirments for that game, my educated guess would be no.

you have to buy an external usb dvd player. Also DVDs? I am glad some people out there are still using that! Occasionally I watch old movies via dvd as the ISP is now charging you extra if you go over your data cap for internet (cough cough komkast) so media streaming is a data suck.

What is it like for music making/editing
I have used traktor Pro 2 before but not on this laptop. I would say if using a program similiar to that the processer may not be quite enough. you can upgrade the RAM and it will definetly be faster but honestly not sure this is the best laptop for that, I'd go with a zbook.
